Jane Goodall by Katherine Krizek
“The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. The greatest danger to our future is apathy”
At 26 years old Jane Goodall went to Africa for the first time with a pair of binoculars, a notebook, and her powers of observation. She has spent her life learning about the social and family life of chimpanzees discovering that they have unique personalities, emotions, are capable of rational thought, and use tools, just like us.
The research station she established in Gombe (now Tanzania) in 1960 became in 1977 “The Jane Goodall Institute” founded in order to continue research and conservation advocacy for chimps and other endangered species.
Born 1934, England

A female mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) in the Akeley Hall of African Mammals at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, New York.
“There has been a drastic decline in the mandrill population during recent years due to habitat destruction. They are especially vulnerable to hunters because of their loud calls. Mandrills are hunted as a local food source in several areas. Currently, mandrills occupy forests at a very low density and are poorly protectd if at all. As a result, they may be threatened with complete extinction in the wild.”

India's endangered tiger population is rebounding in triumph for conservationists | CNN
CNN  —  Tigers once roamed across Asia, their numbers as high as 100,000 at the start of the 20th century, before the species plummeted to the brink of extinction. By 2006, their population in India – home to the majority of the world’s remaining wild tigers – hit a record low of just 1,411 individuals. But decades of conservation efforts appear to have finally paid off. India’s tigers have…

Federal Appeals Court Rejects Effort to Compel Amended Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan
A federal appeals court turned away Jan. 19 a case that sought to force the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to update its recovery plan for the grizzly bear. The decision cast recovery plans as being outside the scope of a federal statute’s provision allowing for petitions to amend agency rules. The Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit seeking to compel amendment of USFWS’ framework…

I’m not a huge fan of venison nor am I a hunter myself but whenever someone is like “I think deer hunting is disgusting, it’s barbaric. Those precious and beautiful animals deserve to live in their habitats unharmed and undisturbed without human predators.” I’m like “Mmm. I think you gotta kill yourself.”

Luna the panther that crazy woman popped up on my feed and said were trying to find a male for her apparently is considering clouded leopards because they can’t find another black leopard
Gun to my head I couldn’t tell you if a jaguar and clouded leopard are sexually compatible, but probably not because clouded leopards aren’t leopards.
which is a moot point because though Russia is fairly lax on exotic animal keeping, there is no way on gods green earth those people are going to be able to find let alone afford a tame, male clouded leopard on the market.

Black-Necked Crane (Grus nigricollis)
The Black-Necked Crane is the state bird of the union territory of Ladakh. It is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN. Populations of the bird in Bhutan are protected both culturally and legally, however they are still disturbed by tourism. The main, but not only, threat to the species is habitat loss.

It's November 5th, 🌏 World Numbat Day – a special day to honor, celebrate, and take action to conserve one of the most unique mammals on a continent full of unique mammals – Australia, of course! I bet if you aren't from Australia, you've never heard of the Numbat before, have you? Well, let me enlighten you a tiny little bit here, and maybe if we’re lucky, some more Numbat enthusiasts will enlighten us even more.
The Numbat is a very cute little endangered marsupial about the size of its more well-known cousin, the opossum. It has a long, sticky tongue perfectly evolved for devouring termites, which it feeds on exclusively – about 20,000 a day. The Numbat is under threat mainly from habitat loss and introduced predators like foxes and feral cats. With an estimated population of fewer than 1,000 animals, the Numbat desperately needs our help to ensure its survival as a species.
The Perth Zoo operates the only captive Numbat breeding program in the world. Every year, they release juveniles back into the wild into areas managed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife to boost the wild population. Everybody living in Australia can contribute directly to the Numbat conservation effort by practicing responsible pet ownership (especially cats) and by never removing hollow logs from the bush (Numbats' preferred homes). It would be such a shame to lose these adorable creatures, wouldn’t it? ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

quick rant and then i'm done but i just saw someone commenting that we can use hunting and fishing as a talking point to "reach across the aisle" and get conservatives to realize they should care about conservation and the environment and i actually wanted to fucking scream. like. you dumb motherfucker how do you not get that hunters and fishers are conservationists. that they are actively doing conservation while you make snide comments about how you can "convert" them (while also, of course, assuming that hunters and fishers are all right wingers) without realizing that these are people who both love animals and have decided to dedicate their lives to their conservation
