Floofy red-head Grumpilump ❤️
Maybe my favorite color morph for Hamataliwa grisea, which are usually more of a uniform brown-ish grey.

Happy Leggy Green Jello Monster Day to all who celebrate! It commemorates the first sighting of the year of adult Lyssomanes viridis; the date varies by person and location.
I celebrate by making weird happy noises at the creature and taking lots of pictures. 💚

This man is so small he feels individual photons as a gentle rain 🥹
Neonella camillae are barely over 1mm full-grown. It's absurd and I love them so much
I was looking for them in C. Florida where they range, and found two somehow!

Little velvet ant man! Phidippus cardinalis male, looking and behaving very much like the ubiquitous "cow-killer" velvet ants. ❤️🖤

Sarinda hentzi boys have some very, very large teef but they're just sweet derpy lumps and the last thing I'll ever be worried about from them is a bite. This lad was grooming his feets on the tip of my thumbnail 🥹

When you walk with me, there's a strong chance I introduce you to small creatures. Yesterday I introduced a dear biped friend to one of my dear an't friends, Synemosyna formica, one of the derpiest of god's children. ❤️
Yesterday was good.

In the middle of the still smoldering pine forest after a burn, I found this gorgeous Phidippus cardinalis lass guarding her clutch of eggs under a small log. People sometimes ask me how invertebrates survive prescribed burns, and, well, this is one way. Respect. ♥️

Ran into a few teenagers as I was heading back on my hike the other day, and they wanted to see what I was shooting out there, and got to blow their minds that this is a creature which actually exists, here, in Florida, and literally where they were walking.

Day 22 of my 2023 favorites: Attidops cinctipes (both sexes)! 🥹
These rarely seen lumps, which rank amongst the very derpiest of god's creatures, were featured last year as well. They're shy and tiny and slow and very hard to spot, and so very cute.

What if Lycosid, but Salticid 👀
Not sure who this tiny perky wolf boy is, but I love him and his outsized jumping spider-esque eyes and little mushroom head. 🖤

Found 1 attidops cinctipes this week on a boardwalk I frequent, and went back today to look for more. And found 3! Including a male for the 1st time. They're soooo tiny and slow and shy and derpy and cautious. Clearly they just want to disappear into wood and never be seen. It mostly works! 🥹🤎
I included a video of one of them on the move, and it's like... Worm spood? She's like pulling herself forward with her 1st leg pair. I've never seen another spider species do that.

This encounter from 2022 is just sweet, and a rare #EmotionalSupportSpood and #BugSex entry (not actually sex, but a snuggly pair). Just a couple of an'ts who found each other and didn't hate it. 🤎

Jumping spiders, like the vast majority of arachnids, are not social creatures. Males will sometimes chill with/guard a female though. And Synemosyna formica are a bit more socially tolerant than others? I've found 17 on one small palmetto bush before. I was in heaven
