The Cinematic World of Sonic the Hedgehog!
Recently, Paste hosted an interview with Knuckles producer Toby Ascher about the mini series premiering in April and Sonic 3. Down below are some of the highlights from the interview with the online magazine:
The Knuckles series will focus on our favorite echidna warrior finding a new purpose in the world. He embarks on a personal self-growth journey with “hot mess” Wade Whipple to teach him some discipline/Echidna warrior training.
The mini-series is treated more as a character study. It focuses more on the growth of the characters and who they are.
Toby Ascher explains that there are some “bigger things” that the crew wants to do with SCU.
The “fish-out-of-water comedy” that came from Knuckles at the end of Sonic 2 is what inspired the series.
The series is meant to follow the same tone and direction of the movies in order to tie in with events for Sonic 3.
Character models have been refined and tweaked along the way in order to match the pace of storytelling. As time passes through the films (whether it’s months or years), we see the models of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and more “grow up.”
Extensive character references have been made of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in determining how each one emotes depending on situations. Character study is key here.
There are roughly 1,600 model shots compared to Sonic 1, which had a little over 300.
Toby Ascher explains that if the Knuckles series is successful, then there is potential for more stories/mini-series with other characters. He also explains that the story will be carefully crafted with a purpose to serve the character(s) rather than to make something for the sake of making something.
If the series and the third film are successful in general, then expansion will continue in SCU.
To quote Toby Ascher, “We knew that, with Shadow coming into Sonic 3 and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events. They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters. And so what television did for us is it gave us time to go into some of the more supporting characters in depth and really build them out in cool ways.”

💝 A headcanon about their love language
yeah these are def just shaping up to be analysis of canon vs. headcanons for most of 'em because we already have interesting canon answers for a lot of these questions but that's ok because that's fun too. this is gonna be a bit messy bc i'm real tired but anyway:
the long and short of it is that she's a dog. she loves like a dog. and i love how that behavior interacts w/ the specific way taylor is fucked up. it is So meaningful and compelling. taylor is for the most part absolutely incapable of admitting or even noticing when something has hurt her, let alone reaching out for support. she's very similar to brian in the sense that people verbally acknowledging that she's upset (generally synonymous with 'weak' in her mind) is intolerable to her, because ignoring and repressing that emotion is critical to her ability to force herself to stay standing & push herself thru the agony to achieve what she wants to achieve. there's this moment during the echidna fight where she sees wards verbally checking in w/ each other and she thinks that she's glad that her team would never ask if she's okay because she wouldn't be able to stop from breaking down if they did.
and the thing abt rachel's love language is that she's Direct About Everything All Of The Time Forever because she doesn't know how not to be. but it's not in a "asking if someone is okay" way, because even that is a level of indirectness, of giving someone the option to say "yes" and reject comfort! she instead directly notices when taylor isn't okay, and moves straight to offering comfort without forcing taylor to experience the weakness of admitting that she needs it. she's not great with words--she frequently feels frustrated by not knowing how to communicate what she wants to communicate--so instead she shows love through simple, blatant acts of physical affection, devotion, and trust. she's the equivalent of a big ole dog that just silently huffs and climbs into your lap when you're sad, and you can't do a damn thing about it because you're getting cuddled now and that's just how it is. she doesn't force taylor to acknowledge the situation to her, she simply notices when taylor needs a hand to hold and very firmly grabs taylor's hand. she's silently, unobtrusively understanding. she sees things as they are, and responds not with social niceties, but with firm and direct kindness. if you start crying while she's sitting next to you, she won't make a big deal out of it, she'll just keep sitting next to you. and that's exactly what taylor needs--affection and comfort sans expectations for her to have any sort of coherent explanation or conduct.
the devotion & trust is also Sooo. auugh. ough. when taylor turns herself into the PRT and she's unquestionably faithful that taylor has a plan, regards everyone else like they're idiots for having even the slightest sliver of doubt in her. during gold morning, when she willingly steps into taylor's field of control, saying that taylor is smart & to let her do what she needs to do. there's this moment during the behemoth fight that i think a lot about where rachel says "you have a plan" in response to taylor, y'know, having a plan, and taylor sort of confusedly reads it as smug & then satisfied without really grasping why. and the reason why is that rachel has put up with so much social bullshit she doesn't understand--the way the undersiders interact w/ her, coil, the prt--and taylor, without fail, has made things make sense. she's the only undersider to successfully speak to rachel on terms she fully understands, the one to kill coil, the one who soundly trounces the heroes every time. whenever things are confusing or scary or nonsensical, taylor, smart and strong taylor, fixes them with her plans. the earth is cracking and coming apart around them, because There's A Fucking Kaiju, but it's okay, because taylor is there, and rachel knows taylor will always make sure things turn out alright. genuinely doglike levels of unquestionable devotion, where there are ways she understands taylor more intimately than anyone else on the planet, and there are ways she can never understand taylor, but she still unquestionably trusts her enough to place her life in her hands. taylor even remarks that rachel trusts her too much when she steps into her radius during gold morning--and the reason that rachel trusts her too much is because she trusts like a dog trusts their person. i've seen ppl say that taylor is rachel's dog, but no, rachel is 100% taylor's dog. she loves that girl like a dog would. it rocks. autism forever.

okay cool i see many of us are talking about the scene where annabeth gets rooted down in the fields of asphodel and we all wanna know what she regrets so much so here’s my two cents on what i thought it meant
the obvious answer is thalia, thinking that she could have saved her (even though she was seven. annabeth has always been an overachiever with impossibly high standards for herself we all know this). but i think it goes deeper than that. i think it’s about her worldview and relationship to the gods. let me explain.
annabeth has worked with the gods’ system for Years. she followed all the rules and fought for kleos and became head counselor at the age of TWELVE. she wants so badly to be recognized and seen by her mom, and i’m so glad she uses her yankees cap as often as she does because it really shows that she treasures this one gift from athena. and then percy shows up.
and he’s impertinent. and angry. and does not give a single shit about what the gods expect or want. openly shit-talks his father. and yet, when he’s in danger poseidon comes for him. meanwhile athena LET ECHIDNA INTO HER TEMPLE AND LEFT ANNABETH TO DIE DUE TO SOMEONE ELSE’S ACTIONS. and suddenly, annabeth feels all her efforts to be the perfect demigod daughter crumbling while percy ‘pay your fucking child support’ jackson gets not only acknowledgement but his father but aid for all three of them. she tells hephaestus as much: percy isn’t like the rest of them, he’s better than that. and she doesn’t want to be like them either. and think about it: that turns her Whole Worldview on its head
she never saw herself as deserving of her mother’s attention, even if she craved it. she believes love is transactional, and now she’s learning it doesn’t have to be. and that’s a Lot to process in such a short amount of time— realizing that all that time, effort, and energy, all those pieces of herself, that she gave to the gods were useless. that so much of her life was wasted on the gods’ fucked up cycle of neglect. it’s HARD to look back and realize “i deserved better,” and regret putting up with it all
it’s even harder to realize someone else deserved better. in the beginning. of the series, annabeth saw thalia’s fate as an honorable, even enviable, one. a hero’s fate. dying in battle, for glory, and having a god intervene in the moment of your death. i think she sees that very differently now. i think she realizes just how cruel zeus and the world were to thalia, and how fucked it was that she idolized thalia’s “hero’s fate”
and guess what! percy’s worldview only really started making an impression on her like . three days ago. she probably feels so much guilt on TOP of all this regret and anger, because it takes a long time to break out of mindsets like hers. she hasn’t deconstructed it all just yet, and in giving up her blind servitude to the gods and her mother, she’s probably struggling with the feeling that she’s not allowed to be angry, that she’s ungrateful, that she’s severely insulting them. i think this absolute tsunami of emotions is more than enough to bog her down in the fields of asphodel and would align with her character development as she starts seeing the gods for what they really are
(but what do i know, maybe this scene is just foreshadowing some crazy tv annabeth tragic backstory that we get to see later)

This was it.
[Name] was to pay for their most heinous crime ever yet: 'betraying Knuckles'.
Knuckles recoiled his right fist back in preparation, curling it in and it was vividly shaking with such rage. Red sparks flew on his right fist, as [Name] stared at Knuckles, looking into his eyes for one last time.
Knuckles scrunched his nose up, not wanting to see that look in [Name's] eyes and he just went in to strike. As his fist was about to make contact with the [Animal Name], Knuckles felt himself flinch and recoil back in shock.
His breath hitched, as he stared at [Name] and he saw the fear in their eyes. He saw trembling, he saw the injuries he had caused. And, most importantly of all:
He saw the [Name] he had once known.
Shaking his head rapidly, Knuckles brought his dominant fist back and went in to try strike again. But, this was more evidently hesitant and the red echidna gritted his teeth with such frustration.
He just couldn't bring himself to do it. Not to [Name].
Blood dripped down [Name's] forehead, as they groaned silently and breathed heavily, tiredly staring at Knuckles. The echidna's body was shaking, his angry glare still painted upon his face and he punched the ground beside [Name's] head with such resent.
Some mud on the floor was splattered with water droplets. Those were tears. Tears of so many different emotions that belonged to the echidna, Knuckles:
Anguish.
Fear.
Anger.
Resent.
Shame.
Body rigid in his sorrow, Knuckles bowed his head down in shame and he couldn't even bear to look at [Name], turning his face away from them.
An anguished cry of many mixed emotions was erupted from his lips, quickly moving away from [Name] and stumbled upon his feet, as he backed away: the [Colour] [Animal Name] gradually sat themselves up and rubbed their head in pain.
They looked to the echidna, confusion filled within them, as they saw Knuckles shake his head rapidly and turn his back on [Name]. In a defeated manner, the fuelled-up echidna sat down with a huff and brought his legs to his chest.
[Name] stumbled on their feet, using a tree to support them and they slowly made their way towards the distressed echidna. Bringing their hand up to his shoulder, Knuckles fiercely looked at them, his eyes flashed an aggressive red and he barked out:
"Go away!"
At this, the [Colour] mobian took quick steps back and swallowed down their breath.
"...Please..." Knuckles muttered, a pleading tone wavered in his voice, as it cracked in fear that he would crack any moment himself again.
The [Animal Name] didn't say anything, as they limped over and carried Sonic with a somewhat struggle, carrying him in a bridal style out from the greenly forest they were set in.
Knuckles peered over his shoulder, seeing the blue and [Colour] figures disappear off into the distance. The red echidna looked over at himself in the reflection, his left fist hit the water to discern his reflection and caused water ripples to appear.
The next words he muttered out, he felt so shameful to even have to try say it to his reflection. When, he truly knows who to say these next words to:
"...I'm sorry, friend..."

SONIC FRONTIERS SPOILERS
So. I played up to Ouranos Island today, and the backstory of the ancients was revealed plus more insight into the Chaos Emerald. My little brother and I have been talking about it ever since, and this is what we concluded.
It was confirmed in an egg memo in Frontiers that Chaos is essentially an Ancient that was corrupted by eons of Chaos energy. And seeing as before this game came out it was stated that Chaos was a mutated chao, it stands to reason that the chao and the koco are related.
Chaos was a member of a scout party going after the Master Emerald to retrieve it, and something happened, no idea what, but all the other members of the party died, leaving Chaos the sole survivor. They all must have been exposed to the Master Emerald and the chaos energy for so long that they all sort of mutated.
Koco are shown to be the remnants of Ancient souls with unfinished business, much like little stone ghosts. The ancients still had a duty to fulfill; bring back the Master Emerald to use to bolster their defenses. But they couldn’t do that for whatever reason, and they remained as koco for thousands and thousands of years. As they were exposed to more and more chaos energy, they changed. They forgot why they still lingered, and sort of just… moved on. They grew wings and stubby little limbs, and a body they were attached to. They began to reproduce, and they now flourish as chao.
Chaos is the only one that remembers—even distantly—why they’re still here. They retained a lot of their Ancient characteristics and seemed to take refuge in the Master Emerald, watching and protecting what was left of their fallen companions.
The Ancients don’t seem to exist in the same way most living beings from Sonic’s planet do; they seem to be something more like a spiritual projection supported by a koco “skeleton” if you will. So since Chaos still had the capability of this spiritual form, they were able to hide in the Master Emerald more easily.
Remember when Knuckles’s tribe went after the Master Emerald in SA1? Chaos was upset because they harmed the chao (I mean, I didn’t have the same emotional attachment but so was I, poor babies). Now think about this; the echidnas were trampling what was left of their friends, maybe even their family.
When Chaos was released from the Master Emerald thousands of years later, there were no chao around the altar. They were left with no choice at the time but to assume the chao were all dead. I feel like this adds a new dimension to SA1.

Went to my first out of state convention and here’s a small summary of everything:
Christopher Sabat (All Might, Vegeta, Armstrong) eagerly signed two of my funko pops for the price of one and really loves the MHA Hello Kitty pops

I do enjoy a good crime. My apologies for not answering this sooner. I do despise Israel though. If you want to know—actually it doesn’t matter if you want to or not. When you try to tell me what my stances are I’m going to make them more clear.
Israel is a giant drum of echidna cum left out in the desert sun for 70ish years. I’d rather take a sip of that than stand in the presence of someone who supports Israel. I lied, that’s fucking disgusting. But it’s my belief that the only people who can support Israel at this point must be Evil™️. I don’t think it’s possible that they aren’t. Unless they’re just extremely stupid & don’t ever question a single thing they’re ever told, which is its own lighter kind of badness.
You very much sound like one of those chronically online leftists & frankly it’s embarrassing knowing that the conservatives of my country group me together with people like you who seem to operate first & foremost on emotions rather than critical thought & the like. I’m also chronically online & yet somehow I was able to retain a concept we humans have called “nuance”. The world isn’t black & white. Hamas can be lame at the same time Israel is genocidal. Hamas wanting to kill all Jews, or any Jews for that matter, is unacceptable. They can kill Israeli state agents who happen to be Jewish. But when you specifically seek out or claim you want to kill Jews, you’re a murderous antisemite. Yes, Israel is worse. No, the group that says they want to specifically kill Jewish people is not automatically good because of Israel. Can Hamas do good deeds? Absolutely. Everyone is capable of that, even a literal SS guard at Auschwitz. Just read about one of them. He was still a disgusting piece of trash at the end of the day. No, I’m not comparing Hamas to Nazis, I’m referencing something I read earlier that relates to bad people doing good deeds.
Finally, I’m sorry to be rude when I know I don’t have to, but you sound childish & stupid as fuck saying Isn’tReal. Is the state illegitimate? For sure. Should it be destroyed? Hell yeah! Is it real? Yes, that’s one of the main reasons why Palestinians have been getting killed & subjugated for the last 70 or so years. You make leftists look stupid when you say that kind of stuff. Sounds just like American conservatives & their dumb nicknames like “demoncrats” & that shit. I also find it silly to ask this anonymously but that’s not remotely important. Sorry this answer was so long, but I’m not sure how or where to shorten it.
If by chance I’m wrong about Hamas, I’ll always accept that. But I haven’t seen anything that says so. If you care about this that much & I’m wrong, feel free to correct me & include links to your sources. READS?: he does, alot, and just about every night. it’s mostly magazines but he does like to read sci-fi/fantasy books.
