Please read @wondernoise’s fic about them (Aoede/Azem and Thisbe/Emmerololth)!! It was a present, and it's such a good read. It helped inspire me to get my thoughts out into these gposes
(More about these two under the cut)
So Aoede and Thisbe were childhood friends. They grew up together with Aoede frequently going on his own adventures and getting into trouble while Thisbe got into healing because she had to patch him up so often.
Eventually, these two became members of the Convocation (Azem and Emmerololth respectively). Although they had their differences in opinion, they were incredibly close (they were QPRs just like A'loq and Dove), but the Final Days split them apart.
Emmerololth as the authority of medicine and healing, accepted the sacrifice of half of Etheirys for the sake of the future. As a healer and the arbiter of who lives and dies, she saw this sacrifice as that same role of judgement, just on a wider scale. Difficult decisions had to be made for the better good, and she was an immovable and exacting force of the Convocation on the decision.
On the other hand, we have Azem who was furious over the Conovcation's decision and saw the sacrifice as completely unethical. The way members of the Convocation were using their positions of power or their relationships to convince more people of the need for the sacrifice distressed her. Azem turned to the city of Amaurot and fought to defend its residents in vain. She fought for a very long time, but eventually fell to the blasphemies of the Final Days. Thisbe would heal her but Azem soon departed for the city once again. Eventually, the Convocation forced Azem from her seat for turning against them and blatantly ignoring her duties. Emmerololth sympathized with Azem, understanding that she was simply thinking of the people of Etheirys due to her role. Despite this, Emmerololth stuck to her convictions. She attempted to speak with Azem once last time to convince her of the path the Convocation needed to take together, describing the sacrifice as a job that needed to be done rather than a world-altering event that would put people's lives at stake.
Azem was displeased by Emmerololth's perspective on the matter, so Emmerololth tried to change his mind by convincing him to bare their souls to one another. Similar to Athena and Lahabrea's merge in consciousnesses, Emmerololth tried to imprint her desires onto Azem, to save him even if he didn't want to be saved. Before this could happen, Azem severed their connection and freed himself, raising his axe at her for the first time. They completely lost trust in each other and went their separate ways until they were both caught in the great sundering.

I do like that the Ascians basically taught Ysayle how to transform again technically, and made a Primal kinda like Zodiark and Hydaelyn but on a much tinier scale. She was a Warrior of Light, she was awakened to Hydaelyn's call, she used the Echo, and the Ascians were like you know what.
This girl, we can use her, nothing will go wrong ever.
(stay away Azem signs all over the place)
And she does, summoning Shiva and imbuing her own self into it and could go in and out of it so long as she had the aether to spare.
HQ guys, that didn't backfire at all.
(I use this little HC to have Ysayle teach my WoL how to do it and by Stormblood she can do it if the need is there, such as fighting a very angry Zenos filled dragon primal as Phoenix)

I've got conflicted feelings on this one and I'm curious to know how other people feel:
by remaining ascians I mean the shards of the convocation members (like altima, halmarut, pashtarot, etc) that the unsundered raised up
#ffxiv#ffxivmp#mp#ffxiv polls#the way in which I crave halmarut content but am too attached to my own crack head canons#going with the assumption that gaius didn't know how to permakill an ascian#and the fact that emmerlolth showed up at a meeting after the eureka incident#there should be five left unaccounted for#altima pashtarot and halmarut are the ones least accounted for#if the theory that one of gaius' masks was deudalaphon is correct anyway#emmerololth at the meeting was likely a different shard than the one at eureka

I’m just thinking about just how terrifying the idea of the Ascians is, both as a secret conspiracy of immortals and as a society of sorts of body-snatchers serving the goals of said conspiracy.
We don’t spend too long dealing with this aspect of them, in the grand scheme of things, and the WoL very soon establishes themself as a heavyweight by fighting Lahabrea (with Hydaelyn’s help) and then soon after killing Nabriales (and then Lahabrea and Igeyorhm), and yet...
I’m thinking about that questline in which a bunch of people get killed and then possessed by Black Masked ascians. I’m thinking about how Thancred got possessed, and until then iirc nobody had actually escaped alive after being possessed by an Overlord. I’m thinking about how that Reaper in the job story discovered Emet-Selch and got a fair bit of trauma.
I’m thinking about the very real truth in the FFXIV world that almost anyone could just be possessed and be as good as dead for most people, and all they’d know is that they started acting strangely one day, and/or disappeared. Or maybe not even that.
About how so many empires and nations have been built and destroyed just to take as many people with them as possible, and most people will never know. As how there’s an actual conspiracy behind the scenes of so many historical events.
And I’m thinking about how many people must have been thought crazy or just made disappear after learning of it.
