Jacob Elordi et Cailee Spaeny dans "Priscilla" biopic de Sofia Coppola - adapté des mémoires "Elvis and Me" de Priscilla Presley, épouse d'Elvis Presley (1985) - janvier 2024.
In euphoria season 2 episode 7 we saw the scene were Nate Jacobs was looking at a mirror but his reflation didn’t looked back. That is more than just a weird or aesthetic scene, is a reference inspired from the famous surrealist artist René Magritte and more specific from this Edward James portrait. The name of the painting is: Not to Be Reproduced.
Fair enough, after all this we should all agree that the reproduction of Nate must be forbidden. Although that’s a literal depiction of the tittle, the main idea of this painting (and perhaps of this scene) is far away from Nate Jacob’s actions and morals.
As René has taught us before with the famous painting “The Treachery of Images” (or as it is more known “This is not a pipe”) reality and illusions are somehow mixed up. The very same logic is hidden behind Edward James portrait. This is not Edward James this is a painting of Edward James and this is not Nate Jacob is the reflection of Nate Jacob.
And yet, there is another hidden message. The metaphoric statement of both this painting and scene is that the protagonists look at a portrait someone else made of them.
As we know, Nate’s issues with his dad allows him to only see himself through his eyes and his whole identity is outcome of his dad actions and behaviors and is a huge step seeing Nate finally figure it out.
This that said, let’s appreciate the scene and painting a little more.
