i've thought so many times since the release of folklore about timing is a funny thing...all of the girls would've been amazing on lover originally and i believe we all would've loved it, but it's almost BETTER in hindsight, because of invisible string (a string that pulled me out of all the wrong arms right into that dive bar! something wrapped all of my past mistakes in barbed wire! chains around my demons, wool to brave the seasons! one single thread of gold tied me to you!!!), peace (your integrity...your mother brought you up loyal and kind), and atw10 (not weeping in a party bathroom...cryin' in the bathroom for some dude whose name i can't remember now). even several songs on midnights give extra depth to it (glitch, sweet nothing, mastermind...). it would've been sweet and fun and tender in 2019, but it has even more depth now, and i marvel at how she's expanded and enriched her stories and her music in a way that retroactively brings even more to what she'd previously written.

Hah, I’m sure it’s one of the rarepair ones that I wrote for myself…yep, it’s the TMA/Daredevil fusion Karen/Elektra I wrote for a fic bingo I didn’t finish. I really like the final scene in this fic, which I added bc as opposed to Agnes and Jude, Karen and Elektra are explicitly romantically involved so…of course they would fuck in a church they were burning down. I think I really nailed it.

Myles

Private Myles Bybrook knew a serpent when he saw one. Professor Schafer was a snake in the grass, you didn't realize the danger you were in until you unwittingly stepped near its waiting fangs and it was too late. The trap he pulled on Arch was so complete, Arch was his creature now, they all were.

Myles wondered how long Schafer had planned it.

It was all planned Myles knew that. How had the Borderland soldiers been lying conveniently in wait barely a few minutes ride to come to Schafers aid at the mines? How had the slaves been armed? Who armed them? How had Schafer perfectly timed his reveal of the slavery and arms selling to take the wind out of Arch's sails and then lie on his behalf to Woodsinger and Sunborn? Arch didn't dare contradict Schafer saving his ass, but he remembered the pale panic and resignation on Archs face as he realized he would be Schafers pet for the rest of his life lest the red headed bastard ever reveal his true crimes. Professor Schafer ruled Westering now. Some dark recess of Myles mind marveled at the novelty of taking over a fortress without lifting a sword.

misc. thoughts: his end was very fitting for his character but i feel like GOD tma really is about so many missed friendships and reconnections and it always makes me sad :(. Also i think if he had been around and had already gotten his revenge, he would have a grand old time with jmart getting together oh also you know that one meme that’s like “nothing in life matters” and then “nothing in life matters sunglasses emoji” that’s season 3 vs season 1 tim but instead of “nothing in life matters” it’s “I am constantly on the precipice of boiling over with rage and grief”

(Still playing from Elliot’s POV) We moseyed on over to Julep’s house to check on her, and make sure she is doing okay. Elliot greeted Tictac, of course.

Elliot also prepared more salad for Julep to eat when she gets hungry. We all know how she sets herself on fire whenever she cooks, so having a man that can cook is a huge plus for her.

Elliot wants to get married to Julep, awwww. He is looking forward to them spending their lives together. Julep is still feeling that nausea though 😅

what a good one

I feel like Charlie is an easy one bc who doesn’t love Charlie but man I just!! Love Charlie!! Charlie feels like the show course-correcting and apologizing for the way it brought in female characters before, particularly “nerdier” ones who were meant to be be audience avatars of a sort (Becky. I’m thinking of Becky here, and the absolute contempt the show had for her.) Like, here, here is a fully realized character, with her own story and her own life, who is cool and fun and dynamic and not an action hero but someone who we can properly see ourselves in (and the fact that she’s queer is, of course, such a huge part of what makes her an audience avatar), who forms a genuine bond with the boys and Dean especially but isn’t entirely wrapped up in their lives. I always think about the moment where she implies that she named herself “Charlie Bradbury,” she has a huge history we don’t know about and she decided to give herself a super cool name!

And just the fact that she is gay!! And there’s NO drama about this, she is who she is, entirely, in a way that makes her connection with Dean feel SO profound, he learns from her as much as she learns from him. (You know that post that’s like the best m/f friendship dynamic is “pure of heart dumb of ass, and a lesbian”? DEAN AND CHARLIE) The way she’s completely at ease with the parts of herself that terrify Dean about himself. The vulnerabilities. The things he thinks are weaknesses. And just. They couldn’t have her in the bunker with them because she is TOO competent and self-assured and emotionally mature and she would have made the Winchesters et al. get over themselves in. a. second.

And this is why her death was so devastating. It felt like the show had learned. That it had taken what it had done to Jo and Lisa and Sarah and Jess and Bela and course-corrected, had listened to what the fandom had to say and what was important to them, the way they connected with this character. It felt like the show had moved on to a different phase, like it was open to new stories about different kinds of people and opening up its world in a new and exciting way. Charlie felt like a gift. And then they just killed her, needlessly and brutally, and that’s what got me to quit.
