Anastasia Era Parthenia Wellesley

Anastasia came from old money and was the third child and daughter born to Sir Cornelius Abraham Eldridge Wellesley and Lady Augustine Clarice Victoria Darlington. She was her parents last attempt at having a son, sadly her mother died in childbirth. Childhood was uneventful for Anastasia, her sisters married off to wealthy men and her eldest sister, Josephine Docia Ernestine Wellesley’s husband was set to be her father’s heir.

At seventeen her father decided she was old enough to be married, Anastasia didn’t feel the same. She turned down all of the suitors her father found for her. Eventually Cornelius became fed up and chose a husband for her himself. Anastasia found herself engaged to a brutish man twice her age. Her second sister, Genevieve Mona Bernadette Wellesley, was married to a foul man like him and she didn’t want that. One evening she and her sisters visited the local market and as she was browsing she met a handsome that she’d never seen around before selling fruit from his farm. After approaching him under the guise of being interested in buying something, she learned his name was Douglas Ephraim Falkner and he lived on his large family farm on the outskirts of town. He seemed to like her as well and they exchanged information and the promise to write one another before Anastasia met back with her sisters. For months they exchanged letters in secret. When she could she’d sneak away and meet him, alone, away from the rest of town.

Her wedding was fast approaching and she knew she couldn’t marry the man her father had chosen. She was in love with Douglas. One night they made a plan, in the middle of the night Anastasia would take her wedding dress and a small number of her personal belongings and go to Douglas’ farm where they would marry in secret. Anastasia told only Genevieve, whom supported her decision. When the night came Anastasia with the help Genevieve made it to Douglas’ farm without a problem and they married on his farm.

Life after that was slow, Anastasia learned how to keep house and farm. Everyday the tended to the farm and on top of house chores is was back breaking work but Anastasia was happy with her choice. Eight months into the marriage Cornelius finally caught up to Anastasia. He came to take her back home but to his surprise and further humiliation she was heavily pregnant. He yelled at her but ultimately decided that he couldn’t bring her back home with him. That day she was officially disowned. Shortly after she gave birth to her and Douglas’ first children, twins, Dorothy Anna and Oliver John. Adding child rearing to her routine made the days even harder but she knew as soon as the children were old enough to help on the farm she could take a step back.

She and Douglas loved each other very much and showed one another as often as they could. This meant that shortly after having their first two babies Anastasia found herself pregnant again. This time she gave birth to triplets Winnifred Rose, Henrietta Opal and Howard Ellis. Unfortunately as it got colder tragedy struck, little Howard got sick and didn’t get better and sadly passed a several months after being born. However, Anastasia and Douglas just didn’t have much time in their busy lives to morn and Anastasia found herself pregnant once again. She gave birth to another baby boy little Emmett Lewis.

Dorothy and Oliver grew old enough to help their father on the farm and Anastasia got to step back from farm work to focus on child rearing and housework. She became a proficient cook and loved spending time with her small babies. Anastasia fell pregnant once again shortly after Henrietta and Winnifred celebrated their birthday. She gave birth early to a baby girl, Daisy Estelle. Because of her size Daisy didn’t survive long and she passed. Anastasia found time for herself to grieve but unfortunately her husband did not.

As Henrietta and Winnifred entered childhood they both became ill. Henrietta passed but Winnifred got better. Shortly after Douglas realized while they needed help on the farm they just did not have enough space for all the children. He convinced Anastasia it was time for their teenagers to move out to create their own families. Dorothy and Oliver were married off the neighboring farm families.

As Winnifred grew old enough to help on the farm and Emmett entered childhood, Anastasia found herself reflecting on her life thus far, missing the children she had lost but also immensely proud of the ones she still had. In the spring she found her self pregnant once again and that fall gave birth to triplets Eldora Emma, Virgil Sylvester and Violet Eunice.

Eventually Anastasia mastered cooking, she loved making meals and baking. The farm grew and began selling it’s own homemade nectar and jam. Anastasia was the one in charge of making the jams and nectars and she quickly mastered both crafts. Winnifred entered adulthood but wasn’t ready to marry and given her own experiences Anastasia didn’t want to force marriage upon her daughter. Douglas came up with a solution Winnifred could move out on her own if she allowed Emmett to come with her, so he could supervise her and keep her safe. Winnifred agreed to the terms and she and Emmett moved out to a small cottage down the road.

Eldora, Virgil and Violet grew old enough to help on the farm and Anastasia fell pregnant once again. She gave birth to twins Carlisle Charles and Florian Ambrose. The farm was thriving, their nectar business was booming and Anastasia couldn’t have been happier. She found that little Florian was clingier than her other children and she had to carrier him around as she did her chores. She became pregnant again, it was a tough pregnancy that ended up still-born. It was a boy, they named Percy Warren and he was buried in at the Falkner Family burial site.

In her teenage hood Eldora met and fell in love with a neighbor boy and Anastasia and Douglas allowed her to marry him. After Eldora moved out Anastasia found out she was was pregnant again. It was another turbulent pregnancy that resulted in a baby girl, Imogene Drucilla. After little Imogene was born Anastasia and Douglas decided to stop having children. While none of their other children were necessarily planned they couldn’t handle potentially losing another child.

Carlisle and Florian grew older but Florian didn’t grow out of his clingy-ness. He was a full on mama’s boy. Anastasia wouldn’t say it out loud but she secretly loved it. She told him stories from her childhood and about the shenanigans she and her sisters would get into. She and Douglas also noticed that Violet seemed peculiar. She was always odd as a child but as she entered teenage-hood they noticed she became more strange, she had mood-swings and spoke to herself. They weren’t sure what to do about it so they did nothing.

One day Anastasia found herself feeling ill, as months went by it got worse. She couldn’t keep food down, was lethargic, and lost an immense amount of weight. They paid for doctor’s to come and look at her but they could never pin point what was wrong. Eventually her mystery illness took her in her sleep. She left behind her husband Douglas and children Dorothy, Oliver, Winnifred, Emmett, Eldora, Virgil, Violet, Carlisle, Florian, and Imogene. She was buried next to her children in the burial site on the farm.

Stuff I’ve been reading in 2017

The third annual reading list! (Here’s 2015 in two parts, and 2016.) School was killing my love of reading but I refused to let it. And so here we are, three years and 280 books later.

I’ve taken the liberty of bolding my favourite reads this year, and including some background about how I came to read what I did. Here we go:

I pseudo-resolved to read slower this year, and savour books that need time to seep in. Longer books tend to fit that profile for me, so I went and read the longest book in my home library.

1. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, translated from the Russian by Rosemary Edmonds (reflections here)

Don’t know how I zeroed in on this gem in a Kinokuniya bookstore, but I love it and you should definitely read it. Go. Go now. I was two years slow on the uptake for Pulley’s debut, but when her second novel came out this year, I literally ordered it online in 0.0002 seconds. It’s number 51 on this list.

2. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley

I can’t summarise how I feel about this next one. It just gets to me. After reading it, I went on to watch the film as well as its 20-years-later sequel. I might read some more by Welsh, but gosh the Scottish accent is hard to decipher.

3. Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh

Perfect for bringing along on my first semester studying overseas.

4. Hector and the Search for Happiness by François Lelord

And then the school texts start! As does leisure/procrastination reading: all the Neruda and Sexton poetry, plus Dostoevsky. Only novels, novellas, plays, and anthologies are listed here; this semester I studied many isolated short stories and poems. Books I read twice are the ones I happened to write essays on – it doesn’t necessarily mean I liked them a lot. (In fact, if I really like a book, sometimes I deliberately avoid writing about it, because analysing something too much can ruin it.) I read all the poetry aloud, because poetry, but I worry also in part because the silence in my room was getting oppressively lonely.

The school year concluded, while still in Australia I read books I’d been given or chose on whims. I bought number 65 in Cairns Airport because I had nothing to read for the rest of a five-day trip; I’d started and finished number 63 during my domestic flight on day one. Clearly I’d underestimated how much I still wanted to read, having overloaded during the semester.

Back home once more, I had access to my personal library, as well our national libraries! Although I’d embarked on a big crochet project as a Christmas present for some close family friends, I went pretty hard in the rest of my free time, which was abundant, because unemployment.

Some of these books just caught my eye on the shelf. Some have been on my To Read list for ages, because of friends’ recommendations (76 and 77, for instance) or because I figured I needed to see what the hype was all about (81 through 83, and 85 through 87). On the subject of YA fiction: no offence if you’re a fan of the genre, or indeed of these two series in particular, but to me it tends to feel like the literary equivalent of empty calories — easy reading that makes for a change of pace from books like 79, or 76. I read each trilogy in a day. Also, yes I realise I’m very late to the party; I haven’t watched the movies, either. Heh.

In the new year, I’ll be creating a Goodreads account specially to complement my (admittedly infrequent) postings here. I haven’t gotten an account there previously because the star rating system seemed so reductive, but I have since realised that if professional movie critics can do it, I ought to stop being so high and mighty. Besides, I’m curious about the Goodreads community, and might want to try my hand at writing a couple of reviews, if I find the time and energy.

An unexptected encounter - 2/2

Mia and her mom had been watching some of the morning events for the last couple of hours, but Ellie’s patience had run out after a while, which had made Mia decide to go to the stables and get Ballerine ready to go for their round in today's class at the main arena.

Mia’s mom had been offering to come along to Monaco and Monte Carlo as a babysitter for Ellie, and the three ‘girls’ had been having a great time so far! They were having a lot of fun and Ellie was - as always - just the easiest to bring along, as long as she got to say ‘hi’ to as many horses as she wanted.

Mia had been hand-walking Ballerine earlier this morning and also got her braided and almost ready, which made the grooming easier before the class. On their way to the stables, Mia had stopped for a quick change of clothes, but now she was ready.

“Do you want anything else?” Mia’s mom, Anne, smiled. “Just water, I think” Mia replied, “oh! and maybe a crêpe if the line isn’t to long, please” “Why did I even ask?” Anne let out a laugh and changed her direction towards the ‘food-court’ area near the main arena.

Mia smiled at her mother, then directed her focus on Ellie running happily in front of her.

“Come on, Ellie, this way” Mia said, heading towards Ballerine’s stable tent. “Oh, what a cutie! How old is she?” A woman smiled at Mia, nodding towards Ellie. “She just turned 2” Mia kindly answered.

Ellie looked at her mom and pointed at one of the tents. “No, that’s not ours, we need to go this way” Mia said and pointed at one of the other tents. “Is she easy to bring to this kind of event? It must be a hard job?” “She is pretty easy actually. She loves to be here” The woman smiled and was just about to ask another question when Mia interrupted her.

“I’m sorry, I just have to stop her” Mia just saw Ellie heading towards the wrong stable tent in a run only one up to trouble would do, all giggling.

A lot was going on inside the tent - people getting horses in and out, horses getting showered in the washing area or being groomed inside or outside of their stalls. Mia looked around when she suddenly heard the voice of a man and a woman;

“Alex, who’s child is that?!” “I don’t know” “What do you mean you don’t know?” Mia looked around the corner and down the next aisle just to see a man and a woman looking at Ellie right in front of them, playing around with some brushes from what it seemed. Mia couldn’t help but smile, but at the same time the embarrassment took over - not only over not watching her kid, but also over the fact that her kid just seemed like it was totally normal to just look through other people’s stuff.

"I’m so sorry! Ellie! What are you doing??”

Mia rushed down the aisle towards the man and woman, and Ellie.

“I’m really sorry! Oh gosh, look at that mess!” Mia tried to find a fitting smile, but the embarrassment was too much to handle. Ellie started giggling like nothing had happened. Well, nothing did happen, the brushes laying all over the floor were showing that clearly. Mia squatted down and looked at Ellie.

“You can’t do that. You can’t just run away and go through other people’s stuff. That is not ours. We need to clean this up, ok?”

“I’ll clean it up, it’s fine. Don’t worry, nothing happened.” The man kindly smiled at Mia and Ellie.

“I'm so sorry about this. Thank you.” Mia stood up and reached her hand down to Ellie, “Come on, we have to get Ballerine ready”. Ellie’s face lit up in a big smile as she carefully stepped over one of the brushes on the ground and followed her mom. Then she stopped and turned towards the man, waving her little hand:

“Bye!”

April 6th, 11 am.

The dark-haired man standing in front of her had a wide smile on his face, when she opened the door. “Happy Birthday!” he smiled, but the smile quickly went off his face when seeing Mia’s reaction. “What are you doing here?” Mia asked. “I.. I couldn’t miss your birthday” he answered, “can I come in?” Mia felt like the world was standing still until she heard Ali saying something from the kitchen, probably asking who it was. “Uhm.. Sure, I guess. How.. What..” Mia took a step to the side, making room for him to get inside. “What the freaking …” Ali’s voice was not in a happy note, it was clear to hear, “What is he doing here?!” Mia closed the door, standing with her back against the others. When turning around, Ali was already on her way over to the door, arms crossed in front of her chest. “Logan, what are you doing here?” Mia asked again, looking at him with a confused look. “I thought I would come and surprise you, but I can see that this wasn’t a good time to do so” Logan started to talk, but got interrupted by a noise from the baby monitor in the kitchen. “Ali, could you… Will you check on her?” Mia looked at her friend, asking ‘pretty please’ with her eyes. “Fine, but don’t let him settle in.. You can’t count on him” Ali said and left the room to go check on Ellie. “I’m sorry, you know she isn’t your biggest fan” Mia apologized to Logan for Ali’s behavior. Logan smiled, “Don’t worry, it’s my fault. So… Happy Birthday.” Mia couldn’t hide the shy smile on her face from him, “thank you”.

“I like what you have done with the place. It looks like you have settled in really well here” Logan looked around in the combined living-entry-kitchen-dining room. “Thank you, and yeah, I think we have gotten used to being here now. Uhm.. When did you arrive in Twinbrook? You must have been taking a flight, like, yesterday, or something?” Logan nodded his head a little, “I landed in Bridgeport a few hours ago, took a plane out of LA late last night”. Mia looked at him. Smiling, and not smiling at the same time. It wasn’t more than a week and a half ago when he told her that he couldn’t come as they had been planning for months. And now, without any words about it, he was here. In Twinbrook. On her birthday. Two days before the wedding, that had been the reason he had canceled on her in the first place. “Do you want anything to drink, or… oh, and you can just take a seat, somewhere” Mia turned around and started to walk towards the kitchen. “No, I’m good, thanks,” Logan answered and took a seat on the couch at the same time Ali entered the room again, “She is up, I changed her, but she seems to be a little tired still.” Mia looked at Ali, then at Logan, then back at Ali. “Ok.. uhm.. I..” Mia didn’t know what to do. “I can take her for a stroll, let you two talk about… this..” Ali moved her hand around in circles towards Logan, without looking at him. “Yeah.. Uhm… I think that could be a good idea. Maybe we can meet you at the playground in a little while?” Mia asked. It was the best idea she could come up with. Taking care of Ellie, letting Ellie see her dad while being in a mood, and finding out why Logan suddenly was here, was just not a great combo right now. “Deal, I’ll get her ready” Ali gave her a smile. It was like she could read Mia’s mind, “Get this fixed, and we will meet you later”. Ali quickly got Ellie ready out of the door. Mia took a seat at the couch, looking over at Logan sitting at the other end, “why are you here, Logan?”

Logan let out a deep sigh, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have come. Or at least I should have told you. I’m sorry, it was a dumb thing for me to do without talking to you first.” Logan took his hands up to his head, hiding his face in his palms. “Logan…” Mia looked at him, worried. Something was clearly going on. “What is going on? You know you can tell me, right?” “Yeah, I know.. it’s just.. You know I promised to always be there for you, no matter what, and I feel so shitty for not holding my promise. And after our talk last week, I just.. I could hear I made you sad, and then I felt even shittier when I remembered your birthday was coming up. I have always been with you on your birthday, at least for the last, what.. 15 years now?” Mia turned her head away, looking out the window for a second.

“It’s ok. You have been busy with your own things, and..” “No, don’t do that. It’s not ok. I could have been here to see Ellie multiple times during the last three months, but I didn’t. Why are you smiling?” Logan raised his left eyebrow, looking at Mia, and feeling a slight smile coming forward. “I’m sorry. You are right. You have been a shitty dad, and an even shittier friend the last couple of months, but.. I’m surprised that you are actually doing something about it by being here, completely unannounced”. Logan smiled, “Are you mad at me? Like, really mad about how I have been?” “Of course I’m mad at you, but I don’t want to be mad at you if you are really trying to change how you have been acting lately”. Mia and Logan looked at each other, both with a slight smile on their faces. “Thank you,” Logan said. “For what?” “For being you. Yelling at me on the phone, but still trying to make me smile when I know you really just want to punch me in my face.” Mia couldn’t hold her laughter in, “You are such an idiot.”

…… “Ok, Miss Moody-thing, go over to your mom” Ali looked like she was going to kill herself when coming back with Ellie. “What’s going on with you two, I thought we were meeting at the playground?” Mia went to take Ellie from Ali’s hands. “Oh no no, Miss Moody here was not pleased with being at the playground today” Ali shook her head and grimaced, “She is in a really bad mood.” Mia smiled, holding a laugh in, “Hi Ellie, hi sweetie. What is up with you today?” Mia held Ellie in her arms while taking both her little jacket and little shoes off, and saw that Ellie quickly looked over at Logan, “did you see who it is? It’s daddy. Daddy is here to see you.” Mia smiled and gave Ellie a small hug, trying to get Ellie to not be so shy and feeling ok with Logan being in the house. “It’s ok, he’s just sitting on the couch. Don’t worry. We can just sit here on the floor, see, Effy and Piglet are here too,” Mia sat down on the floor with Ellie, reaching for the elephant teddy and the small pig-teddy on the couch..
