anyway, Elden Ring is about love and hope
Marika burns everything she has build out of sorrow
Ranni banishes the Outer Gods and also fucks off the Lands, giving agency back to the normal beings of the Lands
Fortissax endlessly fights Death for his friend/lover
Melina burns herself and Erdtree in hopes of a better world in the hands of the Tarnished
Blaidd fights against the very reason he was created out of love for his sister
Ranni and Rykard always keep an eye on their mother, protecting her
Radahn evokes so much love from his troops that they organise a whole festival to give him a honorable death even in his madness
Radahn learns an entire new school of magic in order to still ride his favourite horse
Boc's love for his mother, his mother's love for him
How all but two endings are build on the hope that this new era (whatever it might be) will be good
Miquella attempting to create an whole new world-tree to host the forsaken and the damned
Miquella turning on the faith he was raised and even believed in to an extent, when it was unable to cure his sister's curse
The Cleanrot's loyalty to Malenia and their endurance of the Rot, only to stay in her service
Malenia marching through the entire continent in search of her brother
Finlay traveling all the way back on her own, carrying the incapacitated demigod on her back
Tanith's love for Rya
Dialos' entire questline
Edgar being driven mad after his daughter dies
Vyke embracing, to a point, the Frenzied Flame in order to save his finger maiden
or you know, that's just how I see it

thinking more thoughts about Messmer’s role in the story… looking at the descriptive text again,
“The Land of Shadow. A place obscured by the Erdtree. Where the goddess Marika first set foot. A land purged in an unsung battle. Set ablaze by Messmer’s flame.”
this could imply that the land of shadow was the place of Marika’s first conquest on her path to total dominion.
again, I believe Messmer’s dialogue implies that Marika is his mother:
“Mother, wouldst thou truly Lordship sanction, in one so bereft of light?”
since Marika is the one who, through grace, guides the Tarnished on their path to Lord, to me, she is the only person who is in a position to “sanction Lordship.” so it makes the most sense that Messmer is speaking to her. there’s also of course the M naming convention amongst Marika’s children, the fact that Messmer sits on a demigod-style throne, and his resemblance to Radagon.
the fact that Messmer is notably absent from the rest of the demigod legends in the lands between, and the fact that his flame “set ablaze” the lands of shadow, makes me think that long ago, he may have assisted his mother Marika in her subjugation of the shadow lands… and when Marika left, she left him there in charge, and this is why he has no presence in the lands between.
interestingly, the lands of shadow seem to be full of symbols heretical to the golden order, such as the bear with red hair and omen horns, and the lion dancer boss, which has omen horns sprouting from it. what if the lands of shadow became a sort of dumping ground for the beings that ended up falling outside of Marika’s perfect order, and was severed from the lands between to try to contain the chaos of that place?
then there’s Messmer himself, with his “traitorous” snakes and his flame and his allusions to dragons… what if… he started out serving his mother Marika, but became disillusioned with the fact that she left him alone to preside over the exiles of her perfect domain? that she abandoned him, while she and her other children live in her perfect realm of light? what if he became twisted and corrupted, betraying his original purpose, and he now acts as a tyrant? what if he’s almost jealous of the tarnished, who seem to hold his mother’s favor, while he has stood in the erdtree’s shadow for millennia?

Guysssss Millicent was Malenia’s redemption, do you see this, she was Malenia’s heart, the purest remnant of her true self, the self she lost, and Millicent was the one strong enough to resist the Rot and die with her autonomy in-tact, to die human, and not as a puppet of an eldritch god that just wanted to remake the world in its image by using a undefeated valkyrie as its vessel. Millicent got the happy ending Malenia never did. Out of all Malenia’s remnants, Millicent was the one that triumphed, undefeated. GUYS.

“Honestly, if you just removed ‘Ranni’ from her title, then she’s ‘Lunar princess’, which still fits me! You, though, uh…”
“Reasonably, I would simply be ‘Solar Flare the half-wolf.’ Or ‘half-robot’, either could do.”
“What about Solar Flaidd.”
“What?”
“Slaidd Flare. Slaidd Flaidd. Slaidd Flaidd the halaidd roblaidd.”
“Cease.”

actually one of the best things about elden ring isn't its awesome story or its gorgeous art design or the advancements made to the fromsoftware gameplay loop. its the fact that there are canonically aliens in the Lands Between and they're treated as Just Kinda Being There same as all the dragons and runebears and other fucked-up wildlife are

playing a soulsborne game is always like "this is a quest npc! hes a blood guy from the blood church!' and youre like 'cool whats a blood guy?' and to find out you have to watch a low-res 50 minute youtube video of a guy filming himself with his cat in his lap and talking about how there is little known about the blood guys despite them clearly being a huge part of the story and twenty item description texts later you realize that this npc, whose dialogue you never really even understood, is like, the most profoundly tragic character of all time. in the end, the video does answer, like, two of your questions but afterwards you have at least fifty new ones and youre still not really sure what a blood guy is

btw, if Marika was the character people tend to think, the deaths of Godwyn and Ranni would have no reason to affect her. she has 7 more children, 5 if you don't count the Omens (which —if I remember right— were normally just killed before she got her own and then all of the sudden exile was on the table as well).
if she was still the ruthless, genocidal warlord she was when creating the Golden Order, why would she care so much about Ranni and Godwyn's deaths? so much that she attempts to tear down everything she has spent eons creating?? if she really doesn't care about her kids, why was that the trigger to directly assault the Greater Will?
sure, evil women and whatnot, but at least actually look at her as a whole. yes, she did all she did and if the ER world was fair she should had gotten way worse than being crucified, and I'd also never say she's a gentle or caring character overall, but there's a pretty important exception to the not caring thing, and that's her kids
their death caused the entire premise of the game, I feel like the love she had for them was a pretty important character trait of hers

Do you think you'll chronicle any further runs after you finish with Croissant? I'd be interested to see your take on things that they didn't encounter, like the Dark Urge and Companion Minthara
Probably not! I've loved making the Croissant comics, but it's been a huge undertaking and it's been basically the only thing I've drawn for months now. I don't know if I'd be ready to document an entire run a second time, BUT there's definitely the opportunity for some drawings/one-offs for any future runs I might do.
