elden ring Messmer save me. save me elden ring Messmer.
this is just my observation and theory, so don’t take it too seriously but it’s insanely funny that he looked down on the Tarnished inheriting the Lordship title (probably from Marika) but he’s literally a walking anti-Erdtree buff after buff lmaooooo 😭😭😭😭

Unpopular Elden Ring opinion: Ik that its probably just the death blight making Fortissax's scales black, but I like to imagine he was always black, simply because it would suck if one of the most important dragons lore-wise just had the exact same model as the other ancient dragons. (as is, it still sucks he's just a reskin, but at least he has a unique color palette)

After a year I finally beat TotK. Well worth the wait and man there's still so much left to do, despite me finishing this game with nearly double my BotW time even after its DLC. I liked most of the improvements, but I do hope they learn from Elden Ring in that it's ok to just go from open world to linear when entering a dungeon. I worried too that doing that in BotW might hurt its open-ended feel, but ER proved you can still do great without it.

Legitimately kind of painful to be sitting on a chunk of souls and not level up past 150. Kind of rethinking this whole endeavor to have perfect level 150 builds...

DLC potential entrances listed in no particular order
Amber Starlight location--mid-game, generally accessible but not too late in, lore-friendly, sensible. Really hope it ends up there.
4th Belfry-- hope you have an imbued key hanging around lmaooo eh they probably won't do this one unless they add a key drop right next to it.
Haligtree in that one room--Don't make me go there just for a DLC 😒probably will be there tho
Placidusax Arena--lots of speculation on time travel because fromsoft just Does That for DLC but again, would rather not have to hike all the way over there. This is why people have like 4 save files in different spots/word states.
Empyrean Cocoon-- Pretty cut 'n' dry Miquella is literally sitting there, slap him a low five to be bogos binted into the Torrent Wheat Field. I could complain about being a late game area but I feel like people end up there fairly early to farm and/or gank Mohg so 🤷‍♀️
Roundtable Hold-- Really don't see it happening but maybe they'd be like fuck it just plop down a thingy next to the Colosseum bus stop. Maybe we'll end up with a whole pile of unexplained, never-mentioned statues that whisk the player away, lined against the hold fireplace like an Elden Ring nativity scene.
Yet another secret medallion that also, ALSO, adds a level to the Rold lift. Because fuck you.
Boat--Boat.

I've yet again descended into the rabbithole I'd playing all 3 dark souls games and then obsessively watching a ton of videos and reading a ton of Reddit threads about dark souls. And man, DS2 slander really pisses me off. DS2 is my overall favorite dark souls game because it's unique. Even if it has a lot of gameplay flaws, atleast they actually tried something new. DS3 basically just took Bloodborne combat, took all the cool parts like healing and damaging limbs and then put it into dark souls. Giving us infinite stamina and making combat more reaction based turned combat from the slow methodical combat of DS1 and DS2 into a generic hack-n-slash spam R1 and panicroll through 99% of the bosses deal. And I fucking hate that everyone just ate it up and signaled to Fromsoftware to lean into it even more in Elden Ring.
And while DS3 might be a better game in terms of gameplay, if only because it's just a much more modern game and DS2 really did fuck up with ADP and making combat animations too floay, in terms of lore it's literally just repeating the lore about the cycles form DS2 with a bunch of DS1 fanservice, it doesn't actually add anything new. You can play DS1, then DS2 with DLCs and then immediately jump in Painted World and Ringed City DLCs without playing base DS3 and you won't actually miss any major lore, it's insane how little new stuff base DS3 brings to the table. And the way they did references to DS1 is absolutely fanservice, Its actually wild how the B team without Miazaki actually stayed more true to dark souls storytelling then the fucking A team with Miazaki. DS2 actually had a ton of references to DS1 despite all the mouthbreathers on the internet saying DS2 basically only connected to the franchise through its name. It just did those references in the same way DS1 told it's story - through scraps of info hidden in item descriptions and throwaway dialogue lines from npcs. DS3 on the other hand just literally hits you over the head every 15 minutes with blatant DS1 references. For fucks sake, one of the first NPCs you meet in the game is the damn Andre.
Overall, DS3 is only saved by the DLCs. Without them it would have been just rehash of DS2s story with bloodbornified combat and a bunch of DS1 fanservice. Which makes for a great game, don't get me wrong, but it's a shame they didn't do something new and unique for the last game in the series. The DLCs saved the game for me, even if I'm kinda pissed they spent the whole game to retelling the lore from DS2 and then ended the whole series in a damn dlc.

Messmer Theory Time Because I'm Going Insane
Okay I got some wacky Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree theories I was discussing with @honey-ink, specifically about Messmer. She helped a lot with putting this all together and finding evidence. So here's a big post and I apologise, I am going to sound insane.
Tumblr media
So what can we safely guess about Messmer the Impaler? He's likely a child of Marika and Radagon. The red hair seems to fit, but it also explains which demigod the Kindling Butterfly belongs too. In the open world there are three kinds of butterfly you can stumble upon and two had demigods associated with them. Nascent was tied to Miquella, Rot was tied to Malenia, but the Kindling Butterfly had no associated demigod. I think it's pretty likely at this point it'll be Messmer. Also the Impaler Catacombs ghost talking about an unwanted child of Marika. And just as a little note I did find it odd that all the god pairings had three kids except for Radagon and Marika, but now with the addition of Messmer that's been fixed. Plus the name beginning with M to match Miquella and Malenia.
But what's he doing here? My best guess with the little bit of info we know is that he was banished to the Land of Shadows. Why? Not entirely sure but I've got a slight feeling Messmer decided to side against the Erdtree. But with who?
I'll tell you who. The Crucible baby. The dlc has already shown a fair few Crucible related things like the Omen boss fight but Messmer has a few things too like the wings. On top of that the dlc is said to be exploring the origins of Queen Marika, the goddess who ended the Age of the Crucible. I have no clue why but perhaps Messmer decided to swap sides from the gods to the Crucible and for it he was punished with banishment.
This is the first of my wacky theories but the man's name is The Impaler and I just wanna point out that I've always found it weird that there was a random lance sticking through Marika's side that disappeared when she dropped from the rune prison. Radagon never uses it and the red fire it's made of doesn't match the golden runic magic of the prison or the Elden Beast. But perhaps at a stretch it does match the dark fire magic Messmer the Impaler is seen using.
Tumblr media
So for whatever reason, this man sided with the Crucible, but what does that mean?
If this becomes true I'm saving this and I'm aware I sound crazy. The Souls games have a habit of having a dragon boss fight for the dlc. Kalameet, Midir, Sinh. The Crucible is also closely tied to dragons. What happens if you start doing dragon things as a Tarnished. New eyes.
Tumblr media
Specifically if you spec into dragon magic you get yellow eyes with slit pupils. Now I've seen some guesses that Messmer has Frenzy eyes but I don't think this is the case. Frenzy doesn't give you slit pupils, dragon magic does.
Tumblr media
Big stretch of a theory for this one, I believe Messmer might be an Empyrean also, would make sense since both Malenia and Miquella were too. But if that's the case and he's a dragon Empyrean, then there is a Dragon Elden Lord missing two heads waiting for his demigod to return.
Tumblr media
One of the biggest mysteries revolving around Placidusax is where his two missing heads went. As far as I'm aware we don't have a concrete answer for that. If you're willing to let me take a wild guess, they're right here.
Tumblr media
Messmer has two little snakes with dragon wings attached to them. Perhaps Placidusax is keeping an eye on his demigod.
Alright, one last thing to wrap up this rambling. Miyazaki likes his Berserk references, and the closest thing I can find to Messmer is Grunbeld.
Tumblr media
Red hair, similar helmet. Definitely a different physique HOWEVER...
Tumblr media
Grunbeld has the ability to take on a draconic apostle form. So perhaps Messmer might be able to do the same.
Or maybe Messmer won't turn into a dragon. Maybe he'll just be a guy with some crucible connections. Maybe he has no crucible connections and I'm reading into this too much, who knows. But I'm putting this all down just in case one day I find out I'm correct.

my sister is playing elden ring for the first time and she's convinced godwyn was in on the night of the black knives. her reasoning is that it's strange that a demigod known for taking part in a war against dragons would put up so little of a fight and that he doesn't seem like he would approve of morgott and mohg being thrown down a well, that marika doing that might've been enough to make him lose faith in the golden order. I don't know if there's anything in game that particularly supports that interpretation but I do think it's a very interesting characterization, that godwyn would allow himself to be killed to bring about the end of something he once supported but now sees as fundamentally corrupt.
As far as I could find, there isn’t really any hard evidence for or against this theory, so my feelings on this theory are solely character-based… while I do think it would make Godwyn’s character interesting, I actually think it would make Ranni’s character less interesting.
The crux of Ranni’s character for me is her being willing to go through with the unthinkable because she believes it necessary to achieve her goals; how the idea of being controlled by a higher power against her will is so intolerable to her that she would choose to condemn another person (her step-brother, someone who was by all accounts a rather decent person) to a horrific fate, a fate worse than death, in order to avoid it. Godwyn being a willing sacrifice instead of a victim takes some of the blame away from Ranni and makes her choice less morally difficult, which makes her choice less impactful to me.
I do like the idea of Godwyn becoming more jaded about the Golden Order as time went on though… It’s implied that Godwyn was close with Miquella and Malenia, and both of them ended up ditching the Golden Order. And we don’t have any evidence of Godwyn interacting with the omen twins, but I love the hypothetical of Godwyn regretting not being able to save his twins brothers, so he later becomes protective of his twin brother and sister?
But anyway in conclusion I don’t really like the theory that Godwyn sacrificed himself solely because of how it would affect Ranni’s character. Hoping we’ll get more Godwyn answers in the DLC though

So. Thanks to a headcanon I wanted to make screenshots in Elden Ring. And that is where I learned that I lost my save files. I got a new PC a month ago and while I thought I got all my save games, I missed Elden Ring because it was in such an obscure folder. I since then gave my old laptop to my husband who deleted this folder by establishing a new user. Normally I wouldn't mind. A chance to play a game all over again ^^ Only that the DLC arrives in two months and I, as the mun of this blog, have a DUTY! So... what did we do? My husband gave me a copy of his files from his own PC. Because he luckily had a character in New Game plus with an OP build. However, the only thing he did was making the build so Mohg is still alive... so today I had do to the Varre questline. Let me just say, I am glad that build is so OP! Greatest challenge was finding the church of inhibition again! Anyway, I will be able to make screenshots and play the DLC in June... But... Shall I keep that OP build or shall I reskill to the character I lost? What do you guys think?
