eclipse glasses: NASA safety
from mhoye @[email protected]
Practical safety advisory: Given the stakes, I wondered if there was a way to independently validate that the "eclipse glasses" we're buying actually do a damn thing. There is, and NASA has got us: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/14395

Huey, Dewey, Louie and Phooey Duck watch the solar eclipse in Duckburg - My redraw - Ducktales 2017 - Quack Pack Reboot - Happy birthday to them!
I drew for the Solar Eclipse that was in America these days as well as posting for the birthdays of Donald's nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck plus Phooey Duck, who usually celebrate on April 15th.
By the way, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon, which is in its youth phase, goes towards the earth's surface and is located between the sun and the earth and covers the sun with its body, and thus a solar eclipse occurs. Astronomy. And they mostly happen in rare moments, but they still cause a great effect in people and for many it can be a turning point, sometimes in the negative, sometimes in the positive, although unfortunately more in the negative. However, many people who are waiting for a solar eclipse look forward to it and wear glasses to protect against it, because the solar eclipse causes a large effect of glare from the Sun. And it all takes a few minutes.
So I drew Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck, from Ducktales 2017, but in my version of them as I imagine them, by wearing their own kind of suit, but all wearing jeans and backwards baseball caps together. To make them look more cool, of course. And they're wearing eclipse glasses and enjoying it, and there's their fourth brother Phooey Duck, who I drew in a mix between the Ducktales reboot version and my version. And behind them is the Money Bin as it looks in Ducktales 2017 and on the side of the drawing I drew some sort of solar eclipse as it looks like. Yes, this is how I imagine them in my Quack Pack reboot version as well, if it was a sequel to Ducktales 2017. Yes, there are real teenagers here, because they act like it. By the way, it's a redraw from this photo I found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/photoshopbattles/comments/2zp1kl/psbattle_these_guys_from_switzerland_really/
I hope you like this drawing and these versions and this idea and feel free to like and reblog this, just please don't copy my same ideas without mentioning me! Thank you!
I also dedicated this drawing to my friend who is celebrating his birthday today, and happy birthday to you, my dear @ducksinspaceadventure! Also happy birthday to Huey, Dewey and Louie as well as Phooey Duck!

BATEMAN: Eclipse glasses. What do you think?
MCDERMOTT: Whoa. Very nice. Take a look.
BATEMAN: got them in the mail yesterday.
VAN PATTEN: Good structure.
BATEMAN: that’s paper. And they’re from somewhere called American Paper Optics.
McDERMOTT: American Paper Optics?
VAN PATTEN: It is very cool, Bateman. But that's nothing.Look at this.
PRICE: That's really nice.
VAN PATTEN: soluna solar eclipse glasses. What do you think?
BATEMAN (clearly distraught): nice.
PRICE (holding the glasses up to the light): Jesus. This is really super. How'd a nitwit like you get so tasteful?
[Bateman stares at his own glasses and then enviously at McDermott's.]
BATEMAN (V.O.):I can’t believe that price prefers McDermotts eclipse glasses to mine.
PRICE: But wait. You ain't seen nothin' yet.
He holds up his own glasses.
PRICE: from NASA.
BATEMAN (choking with anxiety): Impressive. Very nice. Let’s see Paul Allen’s eclipse glasses.

i haven't really seen anyone talk about this here so i wanted to post this, but gently used eclipse glasses can be donated!
this refers to a place in the usa that's collecting them, but there's a lot of places in canada also accepting donations. i found this article that lists a bunch of places! you can either mail them in or drop them off!

PSA: You already know (or should know) not to look directly at an eclipse without protective lenses. Any lenses or viewers should meet ISO 12312-2 standards. With an annular eclipse coming up in October 2023, and a total eclipse in April 2024, there are going to be counterfeit eclipse glasses showing up on Amazon, eBay, etc. that will say they're ISO certified but there's no realistic way to verify the claim.
The American Astronomical Society has put together a list of reputable manufacturers of eclipse glasses that meet the ISO standards. Check there before buying.
Don't get blinded by the light!

Seriously, the difference between an 87% solar eclipse and a 94% solar eclipse is trivial in terms of spectacle.
But the difference between a 99.999% solar eclipse and a 100% solar eclipse is similar to the difference between finding $50 on the street and winning the Powerball jackpot.
If you are realistically within range of the path of totality, make an effort to get there on Monday afternoon.
And the closer you get to the centerline of the path of totality, the longer the eclipse will be. At Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY the period of totality is 1 minute 16 seconds; but at the Walmart Supercenter north of the city the length increases to 2 minutes 10 seconds.
Xavier M. Jubier created a Google map showing the path of totality and centerline in detail. The default is for satellite view but I find the regular map view setting better for detail.
Mexico - USA - 2024 April 8 Total Solar Eclipse - Interactive Google Map - Xavier Jubier
The warnings you hear in the media about watching eclipses require clarification.
People ignorant of science somehow get the impression that eclipses give off dangerous eclipse rays which burn holes in your eyes. 😆 The point of the advisories is that you should NEVER STARE at the sun at ANY TIME – unless the sun is 100% eclipsed in your location at the time it is fully eclipsed. The second the totality is over, quit staring.
If you have solar eclipse glasses you can look at the sun at any time. They are very inexpensive and some museums and optical stores even give them away free. But don't use regular sunglasses – even prescription ones – to look at the sun.
If you are unable to make it to the path of totality, the next coolest thing you can do (counterintuitively) is go to where you have trees where the leaves have already started growing this spring. The sunlight passing between the leaves on the branches should show up as crescents on the ground and on other surfaces.
youtube
I'm not sure what percentage of the sun has to be obscured for the crescents to show up well, but I'd guess around 70%.
Without a doubt, this eclipse will cause the unhinged to create conspiracy theories on a par with the ones related to Taylor Swift and the Super Bowl. So brace yourself for hilarious idiocy.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! So, how about that eclipse? Sure was neat. Eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth neatly align with the effect differing based on the order they line up in. Lunar eclipses happen when Earth blocks the sun’s refracted light which results in parts of the moon disappearing into the dark or sometimes, the moon appearing orange or blood red. Solar eclipses, like the one that happened yesterday, have the moon getting in the way of the sun’s rays which casts a large black dot on that bright ball in the sky causing their own brand of beautiful imagery. The latter is a lot rarer than the former but the sight of any kind of eclipse is a wonderful thing and should be treasured. P.S. Make sure to have proper eye protection if you ever have the chance to see another solar eclipse. After all, if you damage your eyes, you may not be able to see any more eclipses.
