Okay I am easily delighted by niche art processes that are heavy on analogue and diy elements. But honestly pinhole cameras blow my mind. I made a camera out of a candle tin with a tiny hole in it, photosensitive paper and electrical tape. And then I took these photos???!!

Pinhole Camera
One of my favourite projects in Graphic Design. We made pinhole cameras! Only got to make one positive from the two photos I took (from atop the weir). The railing one I inverted in Photopea. Anyway, it was really cool to make the camera and then see how the photos turned out.
All photos mine. Both negatives are analog as is the bottom positive. The top positive is a digital inverting of an analog photo. No edits otherwise.

Now, if you look up pinhole photography, you might see it said that there is no lens distortion and everything is rectilinear. That seems to make sense since this kind of camera literally doesn't have a lens. It may even be true if the pinhole camera is box-shaped, but mine was an empty paint can and as you can see in the top photos, it's definitely not rectilinear. lol

Seriously, the difference between an 87% solar eclipse and a 94% solar eclipse is trivial in terms of spectacle.
But the difference between a 99.999% solar eclipse and a 100% solar eclipse is similar to the difference between finding $50 on the street and winning the Powerball jackpot.
If you are realistically within range of the path of totality, make an effort to get there on Monday afternoon.
And the closer you get to the centerline of the path of totality, the longer the eclipse will be. At Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY the period of totality is 1 minute 16 seconds; but at the Walmart Supercenter north of the city the length increases to 2 minutes 10 seconds.
Xavier M. Jubier created a Google map showing the path of totality and centerline in detail. The default is for satellite view but I find the regular map view setting better for detail.

The warnings you hear in the media about watching eclipses require clarification.
People ignorant of science somehow get the impression that eclipses give off dangerous eclipse rays which burn holes in your eyes. 😆 The point of the advisories is that you should NEVER STARE at the sun at ANY TIME – unless the sun is 100% eclipsed in your location at the time it is fully eclipsed. The second the totality is over, quit staring.
If you have solar eclipse glasses you can look at the sun at any time. They are very inexpensive and some museums and optical stores even give them away free. But don't use regular sunglasses – even prescription ones – to look at the sun.
If you are unable to make it to the path of totality, the next coolest thing you can do (counterintuitively) is go to where you have trees where the leaves have already started growing this spring. The sunlight passing between the leaves on the branches should show up as crescents on the ground and on other surfaces.

I'm not sure what percentage of the sun has to be obscured for the crescents to show up well, but I'd guess around 70%.
Without a doubt, this eclipse will cause the unhinged to create conspiracy theories on a par with the ones related to Taylor Swift and the Super Bowl. So brace yourself for hilarious idiocy.

Looking through more photos during eclipse. I didn’t understand why the shadows from this red oak, with buds but no leaves yet, looked different. I learned it’s the pinhole camera effect. Pinhole cameras operate by letting natural light through a tiny hole in a screen, which acts like a tiny lens. I remember making a pinhole camera in my high school photography class.

Viewing the solar eclipse by using pinhole cameras! On the left, we used a sheet of peg board to project dozens of images. On the right, the 8yo makes a pinhole with his hand to compare the two techniques.
We only had 92% of totality here, but we had a great time standing outside with the neighbors and finding ways to stare at the sun without hurting ourselves!
