I've mentioned this in a Discord server but.

As someone who's planning on making their own Superhero story and also the guy who does the *Worm OC Creator asks* on Tumblr I'm kinda concerned by just how *Easy* it is to come up with cape names for Neo-Nazis that fit all the different flavours of fascists under their umbrella.....I wonder if that's why Wildbow made them the biggest villain faction in the Bay.

Seriously I think one in three fics has an E88 OC even if they're just cannon fodder and none of them have the same name.

one thing i wish worm explored more was the connection between empire 88 and gesellschaft. like, the closest worm ever gets to being politically insightful is in the revelation that kaiser is this noteworthy business magnate. and then you find out that e88 has ties to a mysterious international nazi cabal . . . and then you never learn anything else about it. but gesellschaft in my mind is something like ig farben, some kind of insidious cartel whose tendrils extend even into the us government. there's something almost pynchonesque about it. the fourth reich, operation paperclip, der Raketen-Stadt. fascism has been rebranded as brockton bay's crumbling neoliberal order.

If I read one more Worm fic that flanderizes the ABB into having a massive infamous sex trafficking operation (which obviously targets middle-class white girls) while overlooking E88's canonical hate crimes, I swear i'll send the author's address to Bakuda and let nature take its course.

i love that brian is your favorite and you've immediately picked up that hes kind of a lame teenager who's prone to golden retriever behavior about the girl he likes and incoherent word vomit, because vast portions of readers 1. buy into his "i am a cool professional adult man guy, and not a teenager with problems" act and 2. underrate and ignore him. when you get to around arc 4 there's gonna some word of god from wildbow about his backstory you should read bc wb (probably due to the racism) fails to ever mention it in the story despite it being literally foundational for understanding his character in full

from what i've seen his family dynamic is honestly really tragic, especially his mums drug habits (ive had family who've fallen into that stuff and it really hurts seeing someone systematically destroy their life). its clear he was forced by the people around him into becoming the adult in the room from an early age, after so long it becomes second nature in him to take control of a situation, like you see in snare (act 13) where he begins leading taylors plan and forcing himself to be in harms way rather than others -he does this a lot actually, its harder to pick up on because we can see with taylors bug eye view system but whenever he shrouds his team in darkness for a tactical advantage, he functionally removes their ability to see, hear and smell which forces them to rely on him and follow his lead- the scene where he got fridged was devastating because the most effective thing he could do in that situation until divine* intervention was NOTHING, he had to take a passive role there.

its really disheartening how frequently he gets shunted in the story outside of the romance subplot with taylor (which i dont really see happening, because what he needs in a partner is clearly very different from who taylor is as a person, also lisa has way more romantic chemistry with taylor) which sucks because when we do get to see his story, its really fucking interesting

i do need to ask tho, where do i find the word of god from wildbow? ive been avoiding stuff like the comment section and most fandom stuff bc of potential spoilers

#also yeah this story has a weird focus on race #either describing characters only by their race (all i know about how alec looks is that he seems french?)#or by having groups like the ABB or E88 where membership is defined by race #i dont know if wildbow is racist because i like to give people the benefit of the doubt but theres definitely some unexamined biases

Actually, that reminded me of the other cracky fix-it I came up with. Sarah Livsey gets a broken Shard; instead of conflict drive, it has a conflict resolution drive. However, Sarah/Lisa is even more of a little shit here than in canon, for Mentally Ill Reasons, so once she escapes her parents she sets up as an independent villain(?) aiming to verbally destroy the lives and psyches of every powerful parahuman in the Bay.

(You want to see what driving someone to suicide really looks like? Fine! I'll fucking show you!)

However, "powerful parahumans" means a lot more villains than heroes. Her first target is Bakuda, and it goes something like 0:35 to 1:26 of this:

(except Lisa is genuinely trying to insult Bakuda.)

It turns into one of those [Character] Gives Everyone Therapy fix-its, except Lisa is completely furious that her villainous rampage keeps accidentally making parahumans' lives better. At least until her own mental stability improves, thanks in part to the capes she's accidentally befriended.

And, much as my Lisa has Mentally Ill Motives, this helped me hit on my favourite way to characterise her in humour fics: "It's a beautiful day in Brockton Bay, and you are a horrible Thinker".

You are Keyleth of the Air Ashari

You left home very young and naive on a quest you never expected to undertake, all because your mother left on the same quest years ago and never returned.

You meet a bunch of worldly idiots who become your best friends and your family. Together you save the capitol city and the monarchy and are given a keep and status in a place very far away from your home.

You liberate a city from vampires and help your best friend be able to go home again.

A quarter of your civilization is nearly wiped out by a massive red dragon bent on world domination. Your new home is nearly destroyed, too.

You fall in love with a beautiful boy.

You go on another quest with your friends, your family, to find the weapons that will let you defeat the dragons.

The beautiful boy gets sad.

You fight and kill the dragons, leaving the land safe to rebuild and giving you time to finish your quest. This also confirms your mother is dead.

You get to bring the beautiful boy home with you and spend time learning how to lead your people. It was never something you expected to have to do, but you're also different than you expected to be.

You leave home on a week's vacation and end up having to imprison a god.

The beautiful boy dies.

You go home again after saving the world and losing so much. It takes time to rest and recover, to try to heal. Time goes on. You love your home and your people and eventually it becomes less hard to get out of bed every morning.

Your mother, long thought dead, comes home.

You are attacked by mysterious assailants, devastating your village and also leading to another long recovery. You send a grieving widower out to try to discover the truth of what happened. You know it takes time to heal.

You help the widower recover one of his friends (the vessel of one of your arch enemies) from the jaws of death.

You find out the truth behind the attack, and realize the world needs saving yet again. You go to try to save it and then know, finally, why they attacked you years ago.

You were bait. The beautiful boy saves you but gets trapped and used as the key to start the apocalypse.

You send the widower and his friends to the moon to try to get vital information so you can stop the evil wizard from ending the world. Again. They are able to communicate with you briefly but the message is cryptic. They disappear again.

You wait with your army. All you ever seem to do is wait.

You are Keyleth of the Air Ashari and you are so very, very tired.
