i think one of the main reasons why i’m not connecting to thirteen’s companions is that they don’t get put through the wringer by themselves, they aren’t given the chance to prove themselves outside of the doctor’s immediate influence. amy was constantly being turned into a doll or a vampire or a flesh copy of her body or staying in an alien health facility for 30 years or falling pregnant or being possessed by a weeping angel or having her memories extracted to build a mythical prison for her best friend or falling pregnant or being cloned by a tesselecta or. you get it. clara was always being locked inside a dalek or uploaded to the cloud or travelling through the doctor’s timestream or being left to fend for herself against dimension-shifting creatures or being locked inside a zygon pod. you get the gist. they were vital to the plot both in one-off episodic stories and overarching arcs in a way that reached beyond giving the doctor pep talks to cheer them up and following them around asking questions.

what exactly has ryan done by himself apart from following the instructions on the plane which had been left by the doctor anyway? what exactly has graham done apart from grieving for his dead wife? what exactly has yaz accomplished on her own apart from that one 2-minute sequence in spyfall where she got transmatted to the kasaavin realm?

they hardly serve any purpose to further the story. they just hang around. space tourists, not companions. even in danger they just seem to rely on the doctor’s intelligence to clever them out of it and save their lives, not once so far (i’m halfway through s12) have any of them shown proper initiative or any distinguishing traits beyond a corny sense of humour tbh

#it’s such a downgrade :( companions are meant to be important. donna was important rose saved the universe martha walked the earth #what exactly is yaz’s personality even apart from being a cop #jodie is the only recurring character worth watching in her own season #i understand thasminnies but there are CRUMBS to build their relationship upon. they barely interact one-on-one #jamie catches up #doctor who series 11 #doctor who series 12 #anti chibnall #dw #doctor who #thirteen #thirteenth doctor #jodie whittaker #jamie.txt

I think I wrote this exact post before, but my memory is what it is, so this just me thinking about the retconning of a bunch of the rtd era early on in s5 and how one way I take it (so as not to get super annoyed tbh) is the s5-onwards as the doctor running so far from ten's arc that the universe responds and literally just deletes swaths of it from existence, which is the plot of s5 -- which is extra fascinating because 14 will be seeing donna again... you cannot outrun the past and it still exists inside of you (did you learn nothing from the year of hell and the war doctor) (also if it still exists inside of you, despite technically being "undone" does this mean that it exists in some type of memory-based pocket-universe in a way, I should rewatch the pandorica opens to see what the show says on that) (also jamie and zoe in the new doctor who specials vis a vis their memories of the doctor being erased and that erasure acknowledged as violence on the show proper and not "just" in the books/audio dramas) (something about memory and existence and this show continuing ever onwards)

watched all of dw season 5 in a single night while making presents. truly the only way to make it through this

if you want to provide that list of 13’s episodes i would love it as a crash course<33 i’ve been meaning to catch up but haven’t had the time and the End Of The Semester is here so i probably won’t have time for an actual catch up until break. in like 3 weeks:( also for that earlier ask, i watched the special with absolutely 0 leadup besides a vague memory of 13’s first season and the stuff i’ve been lightly spoiled on as a result of existing On Here and was not really confused at all, though i definitely want to go back and watch the 13->14 regeneration scene, so it’s definitely not super heavy on stuff from 13 yet!

7. the battle of ranskoor av kolos - season finale so i'm including it but not terribly important to the whole thing

7. spyfall pt1 and 2 - both important to the plot and a personal favorite

10. the haunting of villa diodati

11. the timeless children - not a good episode per se but you have to watch it to understand things (even if the things in question suck so bad)

12. the flux (aka s13 from the halloween apocalypse to the vanquishers)

this one is weird because it's a series of interconnected episodes, so you can't really pick and choose. its weird and confusing but i still recommend it because of dan my best friend dan

13. eve of the daleks - my absolute favorite episode of the entire 13 era

14. the power of the doctor

#fair warning its been a bit since i watched seasons 11 and 12 so i might be misremembering things #but if you're not vibing with the episodes i didnt mark in bold they're skippable as well #dw #and yeah the specials can be watched without the context of 13s regeneration!#honestly all of doctor who is like that you can start with whoever #though i do think 15 is going to get into 13's eventually due to the nature of the timeless children changing the context of dw #in a pretty major way #anyway i hope you have fun with 13 anon! i love her
