A stop off on the flight of Charles II after defeat in the Battle of Worcester
Allan Fea, The Flight of the King: A full true and particular account of the miraculous escape of his most sacred majesty King Charles II after the battle of Worcester (2nd edn.), London (1908),   “house about a mile beyond Sturbridge [where] his majesty drank and ate a crust of bread..."
Tumblr media
““““ Thereafter it seems that the party must have ridden east towards Stourbridge and Wordsley. Initially travelling over Stourbridge Common (the area around Dunsley Road) to the Gig Mill, and crossing the Withibrook there, they would then have ascended along South Road (then called Kinver Road24) to The White Horse Inn (now called The Old White Horse) near the present-day main entrance to Mary Stevens Park. From the inn, their route would have taken them along Worcester Street (formerly called Heath Road25), Market Street (formerly Rye Market26) and Lower High Street (formerly known just as High Street) to the bridge over the Stour at SO 900847.
The reason for the King’s party choosing to speak French as they passed through the town (see Blount’s account) isn’t absolutely clear but it may have been thought a prudent deception because Stourbridge’s population, at that time, included a significant number of Lorraine glassmakers who had established themselves in the area by c. 1610.
To get to the “house about a mile beyond Sturbridge [where] his majesty drank and ate a crust of bread", the party must then have made their way north along High Street Amblecote (the route of an ancient salt-way; now designated the A491) to Wordsley. The site of this house is reputed to have been “at the bottom of the hill near the present Wordsley Church” where, in 1908, there was “still to be seen an ancient red-brick gabled house where [the] halt was made...”  This would have been just over one mile from Stourbridge, at or near the junction of Kinver Street and Wordsley High Street.
If correct, this route would accord with the local tradition that The White Horse inn acquired its name in honour of the steed which carried Charles past the establishment. Although this may represent corroborating evidence for the route through Stourbridge, we should perhaps bear in mind the natural tendency for inn-keepers (and others) to regard an association with the King’s escape as being good for business — at least after the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660! Indeed, another local inn, the Crab Mill at Oldswinford, has supposedly claimed that Charles stopped there during his flight to Boscobel, even though there is no evidence that the King passed through Oldswinford.””” Dr Kevin James PhD , from an unpublished file posted to Facebook   https://www.facebook.com/groups/stourbridgeshistoricallandscape/permalink/635120624620830

Thursday 2 August 1832
6 50
11 20
flags wet – damp morning with small rain F64 ½° at 7 – mending my stocking breakfast with my father at 8 ¾ - mentioned my wish to have a stove in the library passage – he said nothing against it – then talked of the expense of the mill and borrowed of him (my father) £200 (seventy sovereigns and £130 in notes) promising to repay it any time on having a weeks’ notice – but it may not any of it be wanted till next month and some of it not till Xmas - staid talking to Marian - told her M-‘s account of Mr Inman and his oldest daughter whom she had met at the Deanery - a nice looking girl - said to have a good fortune - everybody inquiring who they were - Mrs Montagu Wynyard took her everywhere and the girl was getting herself rather disliked by some of her first friends (the Miss Dunsleys M- thought or some very respectable people) whom she now cut - Mr Inman was playing cards but not like a gentleman - Mrs Inman never heard of - the house he is building at Acomb good but in bad tasted - great projecting stone balconies - some talk with Marian about will-making - she quite set at liberty by my uncle to do whatever she chose with what she had - she might leave it to anyone who pleased her in politics - in fact, she should do just as she liked - would not allow even any Inmans to have any claim upon her or expect anything from her - they were particularly situated - their father had behaved so ill that their mother, she had said to herself they should have nothing of hers - it seems she still dwells on the expectations of something considerable from extra sources - on my quietly saying that when it came to the point she would leave what she had as might be just, and not to any political speculator and Cobbett of his day, she said, well! if she had a will to make
SH:7/ML/E/15/0102
she should perhaps astonish everybody - then on my saying perhaps after all she would leave what she had to her natural heir John L- no! she would remember the child - his sister - who, as I told her, was only a few years younger than her brother and now aetatis 18 or 19 - Marian never shews the smallest intentions of leaving anything to me - tout au contraire - that I have no reason to think of leaving her anything – just saw my aunt for a minutes and went out at 11 ¼ - Washington soon came to me in the walk – gave me his levels of it – determined to have the improvements done, and the channelling done so as to have the road water run down the sunk fence if it could be done for 3/. or 3/6 a rood – then went to the Wellroyde new road and footpaths and sauntered about – went to Lower brea – George Robinson said Mr. Briggs had drawn nothing out of the bank 3rd May and 12th May – Damp and small rain, and disagreeable day, so came home before 2 – changed my things – found on my desk note to Mr. James Briggs from the bank to say that he himself had signed the checks on the 3rd and 12th May the 1st payable to N. Brown the 2nd to Joseph Pickles – investigated this – found Pickles’ bill receipted £17.10.0 for walling the fence wall between Bloody field (Pickersgills’) and the road to the top of the old bank, but could find nothing about the £9.3.4. to N. Brown – then sat down to my accounts and at cash book and private day book till 6 – dinner at 6 ¼ - afterwards wrote all so far of today – Mr. Samuel Washington came soon after 8 and staid till near 9 – brought Mr. Jones’ and his own valuation of ‘the additional water privilege the Misses Walker have taken to their mill at Walterclough and consider the same worth £3 per annum’ and ½ the stream belonging to JL- he ‘will of course be entitled to £3 per annum’ – signed ‘Frederick Robert Jones and Samuel Washington’ – then skimmed over the courier - the morning post came sent ‘By order of Mrs. Cameron’ containing the announcement of her marriage on the 31st ultimo at St. Martins’ church (her parish church at Whitehall) by her uncle the honourable and revered the dean of Windsor – then read in the little room with them all the 12pp. of preface and the 1st 14pp. of the work itself Sharon Turners’ history of the world before the Deluge – came upstairs at 10 10 – Damp disagreeable small rainy day – heavy rain in the evening F64° at 10 ¼ p.m.

Dunsley and Taragon?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven’t put a ton of thought into Dunsley yet, but after thinking about it, he and Tarragon would actually encounter each other quite a bit!
Dunsley is a junior detective (or aspires to be at least haha) and since Tarragon is a clan leader, Dunsley likes to try sticking his snout into official clan business haha. He’s always interested in the affairs of the leaders. Tarragon doesn’t really mind so much! Dunsley is a cute kid and hasn’t really caused any trouble, so it’s fine. Also Dunsley has a habit of sleeping through the leader meetings he sits on anyway haha Dunsley would probably often try to have one-on-one discussions with the leaders too, and Tarragon is happy to listen, which Dunsley would really appreciate, especially since Tarragon doesn’t belittle him or his insights because of his age. Dunsley definitely admires Tarragon a lot!
Furthermore! I realized Dunsley is 17…and Tarragon has two 17 year old daughters, Bibelot and Chiaroscuro! I don’t think either of them are super close with Dunsley, but I think Dunsley probably does hang with Bibelot occasionally! Bibelot also likes to sit in on leader meetings, and I’m sure they’re eager to discuss clan politics with each other afterward haha..though Dunsley’s sleeping habits would frustrate Bibelot dsfsdf but yeah back to Tarragon, he would think Dunsley is a decent friend for Bibelot at least! Happy to see them get along! And Dunsley is probably like ‘Bibelot you have the coolest dad :)’ hahah
That said, Tarragon probably does worry a little about how often Dunsley sleeps throughout the day dfsadf i have no idea what the standard treatment for narcolepsy in the 1920s would entail.

Extraction - Re-Review #19
So today’s episode is about a giant piece of machinery! Sort of anyway, it’s more about the people who get trapped, but then we all know IR don’t rescue the expensive things which have been designed with flaws!
So we start of with the US military testing out their new Sidewinder-
Tumblr media
Oh, sorry! Wrong episode!
Tumblr media
But seriously, are ‘Pit of Peril’ (TOS) vibes going on here for anyone other than myself?
No, today’s story is about a young boy whose an International Rescue enthusiast and lives in North Australia at the Dunsley Tracking station-
Tumblr media
No... also the wrong episode. There were two little boys in that one. This episode definitely only has one, but he is still an IR fan (and a smarter one than Bob and Tony - sorry boys)! Really though, this is set in Dunsley Fields... Now I’m getting ‘Cry Wolf’ (TOS) vibes. Is anyone else getting this nostalgic recollection, or is it just me seeing the endless parallels?
And for you information, you can visit the real Dunsley - in Cheddar, SW England.
Tumblr media
Anyone else see similarities in Aidan and Tom whilst we’re on the subject? They both have model Thunderbird Three’s too. And caps. And the same hoody just in different colours...
Tumblr media
Okay, let’s stick with TAG for now and run with this episode!
We are in Dunsley Fields, with Aidan and his Dad, Robert Williams, the warden. They’re playing ‘International Rescue’ when they come across a dangerous platform which has been mining hydro-methane and severely weakened the ground-
And, I’m sorry, I was going to try and get through this review with the focus on TAG still, but Williams?! And technically they get stuck in a collapse, which was the same type of rescue as Bob and Tony too....
No, really going to stick with TAG now. Promise.
Tumblr media
I love a good shot of Thunderbird Five!
“Ok, it’s a little weird.”
I agree with Gordon, it’s very weird - I mean, here we go again on the similarities!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to mention the fact that originally IR weren’t going to respond, because it just seemed like machinery had been caught in the incident... yeah, I’m just going to move swiftly on.
“That wasn’t an earthquake we detected. It was a cave in.”
Tumblr media
This boy is braver than I think I would have been. He’s very smart and a practical thinker too.
“The area’s full of flooded caverns. If you can find a way in, the most direct route would be to go underwater.”
Yeah.. finding the way in was the easy part right? Navigating the caverns... not so much.
“Ok... if this is the most direct way in, then that control section must be on the other side of the world.”
Didn’t ‘Alice in Wonderland’ have something to say about cavernous tunnels connecting us to the other side of the world? Don’t fall through Gordon!
I still love that Gordon called Virgil, “Virge”.
Tumblr media
“An underwater rescue? So you’re in Thunderbird Four!”
“To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?”
He only said that because the kid knew his Thunderbird! Gordon loves to be the favourite, especially with the fans.
“Gordo”... I like that too.
“I need you to stay calm. That’s the first rule of any emergency.”
“He’s my Dad, you know.”
“Yeah, I really do.”
I think we can understand now why the boys name drop so much in the next few episodes/series;
“We even found a picture of Thunderbird Three on the net.”
Haha, I can imagine Gordon’s face, no wonder they didn’t show it up close!
“So much for keeping that one secret.”
Tumblr media
“Why didn’t I think of that?”
“Because nobody but me can do it. That’s the beauty of flying the big bird.”
Yeah, I think Virgil’s deserved some bragging rights for that one.
I love seeing MAX back to cleaning. He cleaned Jeff’s desk too!
“I may have a little problem with my brilliant plan.”
When do you not encounter problems, Virgil? Literally it’s their job. If any of them ever want to retire, I’m sure someone will snap them up for their problem solving abilities.
“You were right about the hydro-methane. It’s everywhere.”
“Try not to ignite it. If it blows up it will be like-”
“It will be like the 4th July?”
“More like... Doomsday.”
Good on you for trying to be hopeful though, Gordon.
Tumblr media
I’ve had a couple conversations with fellow fanfiction authors about being cruel to Gordon... Yeah, this was a cruel to Gordon moment. I mean, either they’re trying to kill him or break his back, or maybe a bit of both.
Or maybe this is a common occurrence, more so than we see. I mean, ‘Crosscut’ flashbacks?
Tumblr media
“Perfect timing... Maybe not so perfect.”
Can someone, anyone, please, please, please teach this lot to stop speaking famous last words!
But, Virgil got them in time, so we’ll let this one slide I suppose.
Tumblr media
“Johnny, did you just bust a crime ring from orbit?”
Yes Gordon, yes he did. Talented family right, folks? But ur... Johnny? Where did all these nicknames come from? I don’t mind, it’s quite entertaining, but I’m just curious.
“You never want something bad to happen to your Dad.”
“No.”
“You sure don’t.”
A nice happy ending! I really loved all the father-son references in this and I think it was a really nice semi-uplifting way to follow ‘Recharge’, but to still bring this message home about parental relationships. Remember to value your parents everyone! They’re the sort of people we do often end up idolising, or thinking will always be there, when really we never know.
Lastly;
“F-A-B.”
“FAB. What does that mean?”
Join the club mate!
