A Night Off
for @dukexietyweek free day
Summary: Virgil’s day off gets taken over by friends, but at least Remus is there to give him a break and the chance to relax at the end of it all
/\/\
It was meant to be Virgil's first day off with no obligations in what felt like forever.
He'd been perfectly ready to crash out and stay in bed all day, or slouch around his house, relaxing and just watching TV or browsing the internet with nothing to do and nobody needing his attention.
It was meant to be his day off and now it was 9o'clock at night and he wanted to curl up in a ball and cry.
He'd started the morning off perfectly, just relaxing, but then Patton had called about this thing that they swore he'd absolutely love and it was happening just today, so he had to get up and go there or face them calling every hour until he did so. After that things just spiralled, with Roman and Logan, even Janus meeting him while doing stuff with the others and claiming some time for something else they all swore were the perfect ways to spend his time off from work.
None of it had been what Virgil wanted to do and none of them had listened when he begged to just go home and relax. They all seemed convinced that no matter how many evenings they did things with Virgil any days off from obligations were meant to be spent with or claimed by friends.
So here he was, finally home again, in the biggest hoodie he had, stolen from his boyfriend a while ago and curled into a ball, trying not to cry. He had just wanted a break, to relax and not interact for a while; Some time where the public didn't get to see him, and the only person possibly likely to was his boyfriend. Had that really been so much to ask?
“Sofa spiderrr?” A soft call matched by the door opening only had Virgil burying himself deeper in his knees. Remus would find him soon enough. “I brought Chinese for dinner.”
He grumbled, not turning even when he knew his boyfriend was in the same room, looking him over. “You don't look like you've spent the day on the sofa.”
Virgil just threw his phone over to Remus, expecting it to be immediately unlocked and the pictures and notes flicked through. He did wriggle his legs free of the hoodie while that happened since the smell of the Chinese was making him hungry now so he wanted to get cutlery at least to start eating.
“I am so tempted to go and be the nightmare and destructive spirit they all claim I am. We both told them this was for you to have a day off, for you to stay home and relax after everything that's been happening recently. I bet they were ignoring you saying you'd prefer to be home through all of this too.” Remus grumbled, and Virgil knew he was keeping his voice measured to avoid grating on his nerves as much as possible.
“Something like that.” Virgil mumbled, just looking at the bag, but melting when arms wrapped around him.
Remus nuzzled the back of his neck for a moment before whispering, “Next time I'll tell you that I'm plotting to have you abducted in sacrifice to Cthulhu. That'll keep them from bothering you and give you a reason to silent and mute notifications from any chat system they can contact you through.”
“Or banging the door down to rescue me from your schemes.” He tried to muster a smirk but knew it fell short. “You know Roman did that so many times when we first started dating. I literally replaced the locks so many times because of it.”
“Then I'll steal your phone and threaten everyone who tries to make you do something on your day off instead.” Remus suggested, tugging him over to the sofa with the hug, one hand grabbing the bag of take out. “Until then we are going stuff our faces and snuggle until you feel calmer again.”

Dukexiety Week 2022 🥳
My favorite week of the year! 💜💚
Day 1- Fantasy
Summary: Virgil is "kidnapped" by the evil banished prince for a date night
Wc: 1.4k
Warnings: swearing, mild innuendo, homicidal ideation
@dukexietyweek
His shoes slap on the dirt and threaten to catch in gnarled tree roots as he flees through the forest. He'd remove the shoes but claw marks would be far easier to track. Wolves howl loud and owl wings flutter near silently as he disturbs them from their perches. With cat-like night vision he dodges through the brush until he sees the dilapidated castle, a single torch shining through a high tower window.
The drawbridge is nearly half-drawn so Virgil reaches the overgrown path and sprints like he hasn't run miles already. At the last moment he leaps, stretching to grab weak rotted wood. His heart skips a beat when one hand catches and claws dig in, but the other breaks through the plank, sending splinters raining into the murky moat water. He groans and starts to pull himself up when the water ripples ominously more than a few pieces of wood should make it.
Virgil struggles, kicking to push himself up onto the bridge when something slimy caresses his ankle.
"No! Stars— go away Fluffy! No treats tonight!" He yells and kicks at the tentacle, finally managing to get a knee up onto the bridge. "What is he feeding you? Damn!"
A beak snaps in the water before tentacles sink and swim away. Virgil lays on the drawbridge, panting for breath and listening to see if he'd been followed. His betrothed would notice and follow after him eventually, but the longer his absence was missed, the better.
He's barely been resting long when the drawbridge starts to raise again.
"Fucking void- Remus! Stop! Let me get inside first!" Virgil hisses, anxious of yelling again and attracting the eventual rescue party. He stands just in time for the incline to slide him down into the dark castle.
Standing at the winch that controls the drawbridge is a badly unkempt man, beard and mustache overgrown and full of lice. He smells worse than the children who play in the sewers, his skin nearly teak brown with filth. Yet under the grime, Virgil can see the forgotten stature and royalty of the banished prince.
"Remus!" Virgil exclaims and tackles the man before taking a step back to scowl, "I told you to leave the bridge down! Fluffy tried to drown me again!"
"Well, if Roman were behind you, we could have shut up tight before he could follow you." Remus shrugs and scratches at his arm.
"Well, he's not behind me, is he?" Virgil asks sourly, examining his palms for splinters in the torch light as Remus produces another from the guard tower.
"And he won't be for a while! Jay agreed to go stall him and that advisor of his." Remus grins and offers Virgil an elbow. "Let’s enjoy the time we have before Prince Charming saves the day." The sarcasm in his voice bites.
"Rem, you know I'd stay with you. Stars, I can't stand the court without you there." Virgil looks out at the forest, back towards the prison he calls home, "I wish you'd come back and claim your birthright."
"Me and what army?" Remus scoffs, "who'd follow the trash king in reclaiming anything from the Kingdom's beloved Prince?"
"You have to try! At least interrupt the wedding? Please?"
"I only have you for a few hours. Can we not spend it arguing?" Remus huffs pulling Virgil into a dark near-empty dining room, a few dishes of cold meats, bread and cheese set up at the head of the table and a small fire set in a much larger hearth.
Virgil sighs and stands by one of the place settings, "are you sure your sorcerer can hold them off? Logan is pretty good at seeing through illusions."
Remus growls, "I don't want to hear about my brother and his idiot advisor. Besides, Janus’ little crush will work to our advantage this time. Let's eat and enjoy our night. Show me those fangs," he demands as he sits and grabs the nearly stale bread. Two glasses of wine appear as Virgil sits and bares his unnaturally sharp teeth. Remus grins and shoves a chunk of bread into his beloved's mouth.
Virgil giggles and chews slowly as Remus divvies up the small meal between the two of them. Living exiled for loving the crown prince's fiancé didn't come with many perks, the least of which being food a day away from molding over and illusory alcohol that did nothing to dull the senses. But quiet meals away from nagging attendants who are terrified of losing their post over a half empty cup and poison tasters obsessing over every morsel so that Virgil could rarely eat so much as an apple unbothered— quiet meals with his love are a treasure.
And while he loved the prince before he was banished, Virgil finds even more reasons to love him now. The quiet humility in serving them both, the determination to provide an escape when he has nothing else to give, wild eyes that view him with adoration instead of sliding past him as just another possession.
Yes, he loves the banished Duke of the Southern Kingdom. And every time his betrothed comes to tear them apart, Virgil is a little more radicalized.
Who would taste test the food a fiancé provides? And how easily would such a plot be pinned on the banished heir to the throne? Virgil stares at his small dinner and realizes not for the first time that he's trapped. Trapped unless a better suitor comes along who is worth more than Virgil could ever provide.
"Hey, I'm talking to you, spacey."
Virgil shakes his head and is brought back to the present, "sorry. I was dreaming of the impossible."
"How impossible?" Remus asks curiously.
"Getting to marry my love instead of my lord," Virgil sighs.
"Oh. Well, maybe a war will break out and save your ass?" Remus giggles at the thought. "Until it does, please don't worry about his royal pain in the ass."
"Don't worry, he hasn't touched my ass. It's a miracle he even notices my absence," Virgil laughs softly and picks piece of meat to chew on. Fangs slice through the protein with ease, "How are you doing holed up here? You stink."
"The only water I have is the moat. Fluffy doesn't like soap in the water," Remus huffs, "like you actually care."
Virgil wrinkles his nose, "Maybe we can find you a river nearby. You don't deserve to smell homeless and I don't deserve to have to smell you."
"Oh shush, you love my smell," Remus laughs through a mouthful of cheese.
"I love you. I tolerate the smell," Virgil huffs a laugh.
"Oh yeah? Why don't you kiss me about it?"
"After dinner."
Remus smirks and eats faster to hasten kisses and cuddles and a night alone together. Virgil grins and swipes Remus's food when he can despite his full plate. Together they finish the meager meal quickly with plenty of laughter.
Remus stands to douse the fire in the hearth and grab the torch while Virgil licks their plates clean. Remus smiles and offers his hand. Virgil stands and takes it, careful to keep claws retracted.
Remus leads Virgil through the crumbling, forgotten castle, deftly dodging holes in the floor where stones and mortar have worn away entirely. They climb up through the halls and stairs in quiet contentment with each other. At the end of the hall glows a soft and inviting light, the light from the tower that had signaled Virgil home.
Everything enchanted always felt cheaply fake to those with heightened senses. The perceptive could point out the use of magic from a mile off. Nothing could totally and truly disguise reality forever. But Virgil never minded this particular enchantment.
The moment they step into the room, it is as though they are back in the castle of the Southern Kingdom. Virgil feels refreshed and groomed of grime and bugs, teeth polished and sharp and clothes mended of the tears accumulated while running through the woods. And Remus looks like his old regal self, a prince again, clean and trim but not stuffy like his infernal brother. The bed is soft and inviting and books line the shelves while the room is lit by firelight that flickers between violet and lime, although from the outside the window had fallen dark.
"Welcome home, love." Remus reaches for him and Virgil steps close. There's nowhere else he'd ever want to be.

I Caught Fire
@dukexietyweek Day 2: Music
Word Count: 1419                              (Ao3)
Pairing: Dukexiety
Rating: T+
Warnings: Death mention, gore mention, sex mention
Virgil plays guitar, and Remus loves when Virgil sings for him
---
It wasn't always easy to sneak up on Virgil. Sure when he could keep quiet, Remus was good at it, even if it got him punched by the embodiment of fight-or-flight. A lot of the time he couldn't, because he always got so excited to tackle his boyfriend with affection.
Remus was in the mood to get some morbid attention and he knew just where to find his Sweet Sacrifice!
Virgil was in the Imagination, in his own small corner where he had full control. As Anxiety, he was blessed and cursed with a permanent spot in the Imagination to play out his constant fears and worries.
But he was relaxed, sitting on a grassy hill under a seemingly dead apple tree and idly strumming an old acoustic guitar, trying to find the right song to play at the moment. He was content to stare off into the distance at Remus' realm and appreciate it in its twisted elegance. It was a reflection of him.
Virgil chuckled to himself at the thought of Remus being elegant. It was possible, but he preferred the ball of chaos with a knack for the macabre and the sweetness of a corpse.
His fingers moved before he realized it. But he didn't mind the melody. Not when the song was so fitting.
"If I cut off your arms and cut off your legs Would you still love me anyway? If you're bound and you're gagged, draped and displayed Would you still love me anyway?"
Remus crept up the hill behind the tree, listening to the most beautiful voice secretly serenading him. He didn't want to interrupt, happy to swoon over the siren song that lured him into the waves of that deep, scratchy melody.
Why don't you love me anyway?
Remus grinned wickedly and rolled his shoulders. He could pounce and prove that he would love that edgelord anyway, no matter how gruesome he could get.
And then Virgil slowed his fingers, lingering on the last line. If he were anyone else, Remus would assume that the song was over. He knew better. But that didn't stop him from trying to tackle his boyfriend!
Virgil immediately jumped out of the way, still holding his guitar. He stared at the mess of a man on the ground, giggling even though he landed on his face.
"That's one way to say hi," Virgil huffed as Remus' sat up with a bright grin.
"It is! And I just had to make it special since you're serenading me so sweetly!"
"That is literally a song about a serial killer who's obsessed with a girl who doesn't love him and then he kills her," Virgil frowned. Remus simply leaned against the tree and spread his legs.
"I know, but when you sing it, you're just tempting me with a good time! And we both know you're singing about me, which is just heart boner fuel! Consider me seduced, and ready to be Sleeping with a Siren"
"I can do better," Virgil quipped and eyed his duke smugly. This hyper man-puppy was always craving affection, even if he wanted it to hurt. He was vibrating and excited to see what his Scare Bear could come up with.
Virgil sat between his legs and situated his guitar on his lap. He played a few chords and started to play the one song that could make even Remus a mushy romantic.
"Seemed to stop my breath My head on your chest waiting to cave in From the bottom of my Hear your voice again Could we dim the sun and wonder where we've been? Maybe you and me, so kiss me like you did My heart stopped beating, such a softer sin I'm melting"
Virgil sang softly and closed his eyes, letting the music fill him. He could taste the truth behind the lyrics, swirling in his chest like a firestorm.
"In your eyes, I lost my place Could stay a while And I'm melting In your eyes like my first time That I caught fire Just stay with me, lay with me now"
Remus wrapped his arms around Virgil's waist and nuzzled into his shoulder. He wanted to hold this wizard and melt into him, body and soul. He could drown in that voice and he wanted to.
"Never caught my breath Every second I'm without you, I'm a mess Ever know each other Trust these words are stones My cuts aren't healing Learning how to love I'm melting"
"I'm melting," Remus muttered and kissed his neck. He knew how much of a mess Virgil was when he cut the duke off, and how badly he needed the duke's brand of affection. Remus knew it would take time for Virgil to warm up to him again, and he was surprised at just how quickly Virgil got comfortable with him again.
"In your eyes, I lost my place Could stay a while And I'm melting In your eyes like my first time That I caught fire Just stay with me, lay with me Stay with me, lay with me now"
Remus was warm, holding him like a teddy bear. Virgil could fall asleep in his arms, could stay in this position and sing to his loving Cuddlefish until the end of time. Virgil would never let him go again, unless Remus wanted to end things.
"You can stay and watch me fall And of course, I'll ask for help Just stay with me now We could take our heads off, stay in bed Just make love, that's all Just stay with me now I'm melting"
"I'm melting," Remus said and lifted his head. He was completely enamored. Having Virgil pressed against his chest, his voice vibrating through the both of them, it was simply perfect.
He couldn't help it if he held tighter and peppered Virgil's neck with kisses. He loved the way Virgil flinched from the tickle of his mustache and soft lips. He loved that no matter how he twitched, Virgil kept playing without making a mistake, as if this song was wired into his fingers.
"In your eyes, I lost my place Could stay a while And I'm melting In your eyes like my first time That I caught fire Just stay with me, lay with me In your eyes, I lost my place Could stay a while And I'm melting In your eyes like my first time That I caught fire Just stay with me, lay with me Stay with me, lay with me In your eyes Let's sleep 'til the sun burns out I'm melting in your eyes In your eyes Let's sleep 'til the sun burns out"
"I'm melting in your eyes," Remus hummed softly and tilted Virgil's head to look into those beautiful gray eyes.
"Remus—"
"I love you, Scare Bear. The fires in my chest have never gone out, I'd rather spend an eternity decaying with you than anyone else. No matter how angry the storm, I'm yours."
Virgil struck, dragging him into a kiss. He dropped his guitar, letting it twang as he grabbed Remus' face to pull him closer.
"You were supposed to seduce me!" Remus teased between kisses. Virgil was not about to let his mouth get away!
He twisted and straddled Remus' lap, knocking him against the tree. Remus had no time to react before those lips were on his again, melding with his and pulling his soul from his body. Remus grabbed his shoulders, inviting him to keep going.
"You were seduced before I started," Virgil gasped, his lungs screaming at him for air, "Are you complaining?"
"Not at all," Remus giggled and kissed his forehead, "I want to burn with you. I'll stay with you and lay with you, right here, right now. But we're moving once the sun sets. I don't want the vampires seeing me all soft and vulnerable!"
Virgil licked a long stripe up his cheek and chuckled, "How about we go back to your room and smolder until we get to visit the timeshare in hell once the sun goes down."
"Cuddles and nap time!" Remus giggled, "You know just what to say to make me squishy!"
"You're my squishy, and I love you," Virgil hummed and hugged him like a koala.
"You're my siren, and I love you more!" Remus giggled and licked his cheek, "And even without your musical charms!"
"Mmm," Virgil hummed and nuzzled his shoulder, "You have musical charms too, dingus. And I'd fall for you just the same."
The songs referenced are "Helena" by Misfits and "I Caught Fire" by the Used
