you are one of the few people who have made me consider lestappen as a ship with so much more potential than what i initially thought it'd be. your fanfics are also some of the best in the game, i have read spit us out reborn no less than four times, it's such a good fic (and i have several others saved in my marked for later but life gets busy and i get distracted, sorry about that). you have an spectacular aesthetic in your blog and your taste in kpop girls is immaculate, 10/10 no notes.

been thinking a lot about how to organise fic recs into some sort of sensible post, 'cus there are so many (great!) pairings and (delicious!) driver combinations, not to mention so many varying styles of fic and SUPER TALENTED WRITERS!!111!!
just gonna list a bunch in no particular order, with accompanying pics, so you can get a sense of the vibes.

listen. LISTEN! charles to rbr is one of the best premises ever and i will read it in like a thousand iterations. but this fic. this fic series in particular cleared my skin, made me want to cut my hair into a bob out of sheer emotion. i would be remiss not to start with this one because its impact on my f1 rpf trajectory should be studied by science. you know when a story just jumps off the page and it's so real that it becomes your canon. a kind of meteoric inevitability. plus, i almost never cry at fics. but by the time the third act of this one hit, i just went -- damn, am i rly about to tear up at a f1 rpf fanfiction rn? (yes.)

max as a f1 engineer? for CARLOS at FERRARI? sign me the fuckkk up. first off, awesome premise. there's always going to be something so heartwrenching about "what ifs", especially in any universe where max isn't a racer. despite the change of circumstances, just... the sheer poetry of two characters who just inexplicably find their way to each other in any universe... 🤧 also this story nails racing scenes in a way that's so visceral, i feel like a fly on the damn halo with them. and, aside from the gourmet lestappen, carlos's whole thing in this fic is joyous! spicy! he's so unapologetic and vaguely annoying! hilarious! + the swimming pool scene lives rent-free in my head.

this fic is magic. literally and figuratively. (MERMAID LANDO???? MERMAID LANDO.) the kind of story that makes you gasp and melt a little bit. and made me want to throw my phone at the writer, 'cause it's really that good. the yearning, the metaphor for all that's monstrous, a boy who is lost (and the boy who he finds, is equally so). this is just beautifully written and a little quirky and so well executed. i think i put it in my bookmarks as "what if lando was a mermaid and it was filmed by a24" or something. pearl of a story.

leaf meal one. i have only known you a week but if anything were to happen to you i would wreck everyone in the room including myself. in all seriousness, anything that leaf writes is brilliant. they're one of these writers who could do a throwaway line on the label of a ketchup bottle and i will probably scream about it. the precision, the way they switch up sentence structures, the freaking darcy-level regency yearning transposed onto a contemporary sports setting. i'd rec all of leaf's sports AUs and i'll probably talk about more in a future fic rec post. BUT. the hockeyyy one my GOD. the barely restrained violence, their mutual desire, the theme of finding your place... *wails uncontrollably*

(if you haven't read those fics go check 'em out, there are so many great ones, and not necessarily all rated e). this is a criminally underrated little story that has my favourite repressed feelings + people dancing around each other + gothic vibes + "what the hell is wrong with y'all in this tale" combo that i really adore. it's really well written and captures the atmosphere so well.

i profess i am not usually the biggest fan of A/B/O (altho!! this fandom has made me go BUT ACTUALLY HM at least a few times). and this fic freaking nails it, along with the twisted power dynamics between TPs and drivers, as seen through the lens of omegaverse. this story rattles around my head like a stubborn ghoul just from the style and prose and sheer audacity alone. george kneeling at toto's knees while he's working..... ohhhhhhhhh i was this close to calling my lawyers.

i LOVE, LOOOOVE a sci fi concept alright. love that shit, will inhale it like moon dust with zero regrets. and what a fantastic one this one is!! the premise is that the FIA can now statistically show the compatibility of drivers on the grid and it's very pacific rim-y drift compatible, mixed with the surreal vibes of eternal sunshine or HER or some such. it should be outrageous, but it really works. that's the beauty of a great fic right there.

also one of the fics i first read when i hopped on board the f1 rpf train. the pain and poignancy just gets worse the more i learn about brocedes. you know when you're like "there's no way this was reallll" and then you're like "fuck, it was so real". then you get a fic like this that just encapsulates all that rage and loss and grief and upset, set against the starry vista of endless space. *clutches tablecloth* god.

good morning val drivestraight I have a question for you... can you sell me on lestappen. I follow you for general attitude swag and don't really follow many max blogs (I actually found your blog after that omega George fic lol) but I feel like you of all people could make the greatest ship primer. mostly I'm not very into it bc I feel like the shared history part of it gets overblown by fandom compared to other ships, and they're friendly enough these days that I can't get hatesex vibes form it + Max comes across as really well adjusted and kind of an homeboy. so I'm like what's the hook? what do you like? what's YOUR platonic perfect idea of lestappen? I want to follow u down this road

this isn't much of a ship primer but mostly about me talking about why i like them if that's okay <3
i agree that we overplay their shared history, but it also provides a really nice backdrop for everything they are now. they've always been in each other's lives but in a peripheral sense. and it's that sort of distanced familiarity that is compelling to me. also the potential for intense physicality despite their inability to communicate like normal people. that's the hook to me: they are in each other's orbit but they never have been close. but then you get to the racing: and when it comes to the racing, they've really given some great battles. and that alone isn't enough. it's like - combined with who they are off the track: childhood rivals turned awkward work friends, the fact that they can race that hard and that they respect one another so much is just. so good. sometimes it feels like they can predict each other's moves. like silverstone/austria 19 (yes, mentioned to hell) and bahrain/saudi 22, the w2w there went crazy. and once again, this with everything else: that they have this one place and this one medium for them to communicate at such a high level, and are just so awkward everything else is very good. lewis and seb who have said in the past that max goes over the limit too much, while charles has always said with max, it's always on the limit and never above. obviously things might change if they ever get into a real title fight against one another, but i think they have such great foundations that it will be compelling no matter what. also they've lowkey like stood the test of time: look at how people characterized them in 2019 and how they characterize them today. they've changed so much and their relationship has changed so much but still, both of them are at two top teams, they have found each other again in f1.
also aesthetically, the red/blue of it all is really nice. and just like. They look good together. yknow
they also like. say crazy things about each other sometimes. "i will remember it all my life" / "i know max very very well" / etc. etc.
my perfect platonic idea of lestappen Is Not one where they're best friends and where max is his number 1 defender - because he is not, as many people would have you believe (everyone clipping moments from cooldown rooms and quotes from interviews are putting it out of context and putting words in max's mouth and twisting things weirdly), and because that's frankly so uncompelling and kind of pathetic to think that charles needs max to praise him/defend him for him to have any worth as a racer etc. etc. i could go on about this for ages but i won't. tldr max doesn't care enough to do that.
IN FIC my favorite lestappen is basically: an awkward lestappen who like each other so much and can't actually communicate it properly in any way that isn't physical. but maybe the physicality and the shared history and the racing can be enough.

welcome to the lestappen winner's room wip i've been working on for approximately five hundred years...i am sharing more than 1 or 2 sentences

Max doesn’t mean for it to become a thing.
The winner’s room is one of those old-fashioned, outdated traditions that are essentially ubiquitous in F1. A holdover from a bygone era.
When Max wins his first race, Helmut claps him on the shoulder and asks him to choose Daniel. An extra point for each of them, if he chooses his teammate. And so Max does.
He chooses Daniel for each of his next four wins. Daniel always chooses him, too. It’s all about points maximisation. They mostly just fuck around on their phones, talk through the race. Shout at each other, if they need to.
But then Daniel leaves. He goes to Renault, abandons Max.
When Max gets his first win in 2019, he doesn’t know what to do. He really, really doesn’t want to choose Pierre, not with how things are looking regarding his seat. And he sure as fuck can’t choose Daniel.
So instead Max does something truly insane.
He asks for Charles.
Max knows he's pissed Charles off. Stolen his first victory right out from under his nose. Charles hadn’t even stuck around to celebrate, just stormed off the podium the second the anthems finished playing. He thinks maybe he and Charles could use the winner's room the same way Max and Daniel had, for a while. As a space to work through your frustrations, to yell at each other without anybody overhearing.
Max has known Charles for a long time. He’s got a temper, sure - but he’s steady, dependable. Above all, he understands what it means to race hard. If they just get a chance to talk it through, Charles will see reason.
And maybe - maybe it’s more than that, too. Maybe it has something to do with the way Charles has always made Max a little bit nervous. Maybe he thinks it will be a chance for them to talk, really talk, like they’ve never seemed to be able to, without all the badness and the fucked up history that hangs over them every time they speak.
Except, that doesn’t happen. Charles stalks into the room, drops to his knees, and delivers the angriest blowjob Max has ever had in his life. He lets Max finish in his mouth and then spits it back onto the fabric of Max’s fireproofs. When he looks up at Max from between his legs, his eyes are so full of fury that it knocks the air from Max’s lungs.
Charles leaves the room without saying a word, leaving Max drained and shell-shocked on the sofa.
Charles clinches that extra point.
Max doesn’t. He hadn’t chosen his teammate.

Max is down bad for Charles waist 🤭
what gets me is that max goes for charles's waist without hesitation. it's comfortable and easy. in a podium/photo situation charles is always the first he takes hold of and the last he lets go off.
also to paraphrase what @drivestraight just said in some tags they reblogged from me (they gave me brainrot), charles knows exactly where his arm goes when it comes to max. there's zero hesitation, zero looking down from EITHER of them. they just know their hands go there and then they press and fit to each other's sides. comparing it to, let's say, max and checo (who have probably shared about the same amount of podiums at this point as max and charles), max just lets his hand hover, he always needs to look down to check where to put his arm, and checo is always much further away from max than charles ever is. max and charles just have an easy familiarity which is both somewhat and not at all bizarre

i was tagged by @fueledbyremembering to post a snippet from a wip, so here's a piece of the long live inspired fic that i've threatened you all with <3
“You always accuse us of sandbagging,” he sounds indignant, but Max can recognise a layer of humour underneath. “But this year, I think that you are the ones who are sandbagging, actually.” As the room bursts into laughter again, Max swallows heavily. Charles doesn’t know, can’t know, but his words hit him like a kick to the chest, right above his heart. He wishes his team was sandbagging, wishes there was something revolutionary or outstanding to hide from the other teams, but they’ve got nothing. The RB20 is just as it appears – mediocre at best, downright horrible at worst, if luck decides to not be on Max’s side.
When he doesn’t join in on the laughter, Charles’ expression falls, worry etched into the space between his brows. Max tries to smile at him, to chase that concern away, but the expression on his face feels more like a grimace than anything else. The furrow between Charles’ brows deepens.
Around them, the reporters move on.
The next question is for Charles, picking up where the other one had left, asking whether he thinks that this year, the fight between their teams will be closer.
“I would hope so,” he’s still looking at Max as he starts speaking and only looks away halfway through his sentence. “At the start in 2022, Max and I had some great fights, but as you probably remember, that ended very quickly and last year we weren’t that close at all, unfortunately. So, I hope that this season, we’ll finally have some good battles again because, as I've always said, I really enjoy racing against Max.”
When he’s done, Max holds himself carefully still. He doesn’t want to give anything away – no one is supposed to see the disappointment on his face, the fear and dreadful hunch he has that this year, he won’t get to properly fight Charles for the championship again. Memories of a drunken night in Austin try to push up to the surface and he violently bites down on them.
