Going to start doing new geometric-inspired ink art, so I thought I’d repost some old stuff! Lots of this is available on the ol’ Redbubble as stickers and prints!

The Story

When Jason Polan died on a Sunday in January of 2020 (the same day as Kobe Bryant), I had never heard of him. But suddenly all of the artists I follow, my idols, my inspiration, were in mourning for this special person. And special he was. Not to speak for Jason, but his work immediately made me think that sometimes just getting pen/pencil/brush to paper as often is possible is the most important and sacred thing. And his death made that even more poignant. He was only 37 - 6 years older than I am now. So his death inspired me to just get the pen to paper. To not obsess over the details.

As I read more about Jason I discovered something he called the Taco Bell Drawing Club. Once a week Jason would head to a Taco Bell in NYC and draw. There was an open, standing invitation to anyone who was interested. No experience was required and it sounds like a wide range of people came, including some who wouldn't call themselves artists at all. They could draw whatever they wanted, whether it was the food or the people at the table or something completely different.

My hope is to bring something like that to RVA. I'll aim for regular meetings at times that work for as many folks as possible, in locations that are free and/or open to having us around. This would be inclusive in every way it could be. Family-friendly. A safe space. Free. Unpretentious - not about the next masterpiece, but about showing up and putting pen or pencil or brush to paper. I'd be happy to talk about drawing basics and what makes it special if anyone wanted a lesson. I'd like to add some free membership cards (just for fun!). Eventually I'd like to start supplying some basic art tools and supplies for folks who want to join in but can't afford it. Eventually past that it would be awesome if there was a way to help folks with transportation if they need it.
