fic rec! 26K Ineffable Husbands AU

Summary: In the heart of a bustling fantastical city, Mr. Fell’s Arcane Tomes and Curiosities supplies illustrious adventurers with magical weaponry and armor. One fateful day, a regular customer brings Mr. Fell a strange instrument inscribed with demonic script, which turns out to be a prison for an unlucky demon named Crowley who wants is to be released from his prison.

Mr. Fell has problems of his own: he has no memory of who or what he is. He’s plagued by illnesses and terrifying dreams. Deep within, he believes he might not be human at all, but something much more powerful – and much more dangerous.

Comments: I really enjoyed this story. The mental quandaries of if a sentient tool can vote, the Them lurking in the background as rather efficient adventures despite their young age, the slow (ish) burn between Crowley and Aziraphale. (26K is too short for a real slow burn, but this works nicely for the story).

And while I knew right away that something had happened to Aziraphale, what happened and what he was escaped me to the very end in a delightful way. I absolutely adore how Crowley reacts too.

Crowley has never actually given much thought to snakes-- which is proving a problem, now that he is one.

The trick, he figures out, after about a week of useless flailing, is not to overthink things. If he thinks too hard about moving, for example, he ends up reaching for things with arms he doesn't have and trying to kick with feet that are no longer there. It's a painful reminder of his curse, and it doesn't get him anywhere, metaphorically or physically.

But if he doesn't think about it, and just lets the snake body do what it wants to do, things seem to more or less work out. He's managed to progress from accidentally tangling himself in knots to mostly being able to move around the castle. He still gets lost, but he can't feel too bad about that. The castle is huge, and he suspects he'd have gotten plenty lost even as a human, nevermind when he's trying to navigate half-blind and from a vantage point six feet lower than he's used to.

It's not easy, but slowly, day by day, he's adjusting.

It's still hard, everything about this body still feels wrong, but he's settling into a routine, and that helps. He still doesn't like it, but as he gets more comfortable in his new skin, he begins to find that it does, occasionally, have some benefits. Basking is very nice. (His dependence on external heat sources, less so. And the less said about his new dietary habits, the better.)

Aziraphale has helped, too. The dragon has enchanted any number of pillows, so Crowley always has a warm spot to curl up on. And he's set up a whole series of ledges, branches, and platforms for him in the study, so Crowley can stay nearby while he's researching. It's surprisingly intimate, peering over Aziraphale's shoulder as the dragon does his work. He can't read any of the text, but Aziraphale is very good about describing his process-- explaining what he's reading and outlining the basics as he looks through book after book for answers.

As a result, Crowley has learned more about magical theory in the past few weeks than he ever thought it was possible to know. Shapeshifting spells (and curses) are surprisingly common-- and that's part of the problem. Transforming at the full moon, or using an enchanted skin, or by drinking mysterious elixers-- there are dozens of methods that can be used to turn yourself from one thing into another, but none of them match up with Crowley's current predicament. Which means the ways to break those curses don't work either. He's just... stuck.
