A (Weird) Look Into Drumless Albums: Daft Punk & DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ
2023: In celebration of the 10th anniversary since the release of Daft Punk's 2013 'Random Access Memories', the duo (or whoever manages them now they've broken up) emerged with - alongside an anniversary edition - perhaps one of the strangest release decisions in dance music... ever? : an entirely drumless version of their beloved album, nary a kick nor snare in sight.
now, I should mention that RAM is not my favourite daft punk album, but credit where credit is due, you can't deny get lucky and lose yourself to dance.
nonetheless this version of the album spans between the actually quite alright (in the case of The Game of Love); something frustratingly lacking - Giorgio by Moroder without drums totally misses the mark and is... 9 minutes long; and the secret third thing in lose yourself to dance that is sorta what this semi-structured ramble is about:
Lose Yourself To Dance (Drumless Edition) is... agonising...ly.. good??? - like... alarmingly so
one thing daft punk had always excelled at (in my eyes) is creating a sound that makes you BEG for some musical satisfaction - Crescendolls on discovery is the clearest example - and playing that for the entire song.
What Lose Yourself gains without drums is this overwhelming internal feeling that at any point the drums are going to finally kick in and give that satisfaction that the track is building up to. Im being serious, go listen to it, its 6 minutes of the tensest build up with absolutely zero release, its brilliant - I haven't seen anything else quite like it and I strangely love it. It totally peels back the idea of what dance music needs and is still so excellently danceable in its own way.
So, the reason I bring this up is because DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ's 'Destiny (Drumless Edition)' does this for almost all of its entire, majestic 3 hours and 56 minute runtime. And of course this album was probably just a joke about Daft Punk's release, and a continued meme about how the artist dropped a 4 hour album fairly casually - but like Lose Yourself To Dance, its really surprisingly quite good.
now, before you rush into it (I know you're TOTALLY BEGGING to, and have already put aside 4 precious hours to dedicate to the album.) I feel that the feeling im talking about here only makes sense when you know a bit of DJ Sabrina's other stuff: its (usually) some absolutely excellent sampling work with a massive side chained 4 on the floor that slides in halfway through. It's simple, but executed brilliantly. Check out all 7 minutes of 'Next To Me', and you'll get the vibe.
I'm not saying this version is better than the original... absolutely not, and same goes for Lose Yourself To Dance. But there really is something here when it stretches out for 4 hours. I think I may be one of the very few people who have actually sat through a large chunk of the album, but that feeling of anticipation turns from unease into a trancelike... calm?
Destiny Drumless is... like... incredible study music, especially with Sabrina's heavily layered style, the samples begin to wash over you without any pause (the album has basically zero dead air), and it becomes wonderfully tranquil to just... sit... and absorb what you can of the glossy synths and gentle pads as they pass you by.
While RAM Drumless is, really not great save for a few tracks and DJ Sabrina is fairly underground... I do sincerely hope that the joke about it catches on, because drumless dance is... utterly bizarre, but can really very much work with the right artist, and that weird feeling you get while listening is something im not sure exists anywhere else in music right now.

11 Songs I Liked in No Particular Order (2023)
Dang. Humans are so good at making music. Here some tracks I enjoyed this year with some thoughts - some long, some short - on why I liked them. All song titles are linked to a YouTube video if you want to give them a listen.
Caroline Polachek - Welcome to My Island
Bouncing between the staccato verse and the swelling anthemic chorus, Polachek gives it her all for yearning. And, let me tell you, I am a yearning romantic. Lacan and myth blends into the sensual. Is she Calypso? Circe? Ariadne? All we know is that she wants, in all the meanings of that word, reveling in it.
Screaming Females - Beyond the Void
Rest in peace, Screaming Females. A fantastic, consistent rock band ending their run on a fantastic album. This song has an incredible key change into the chorus with Paternoster's trademark vibrato crooning a danceable rock waltz. Wherever this trio ends up next, I wish them all the best.
Björk ft. Rosalía - Oral
Damn if this is what's in Björk's vault, imagine what else she has. Recorded in the interim between Homogenic and Vespertine, it recalls her earlier pop-forward output. No one years quite like Björk, and she is going through it in this song. Imagining the object of her limerence in her mind, desperately wanting to show physical affection, but unsure if it's right. *chef's kiss* The addition of Rosalia's complimentary voice turns into a dialogue between two voices of the narrator's mind. And all the proceeds are going to stopping factory farm fishing!
ANOHNI and the Johnsons - Sliver of Ice
As someone with depression, I think about death a lot. Anohni recalls a conversation with Lou Reed as he was dying about how a caretaker placing a sliver of ice on his tongue was a moment of clarifying, sweet beauty. Here that narrative once becomes a sad but accepting paen of someone's final moments. All the gorgeous kindness of life focused on a melting ice chip.
Sufjan Stevens - Goodbye Evergreen
Speaking of death. Sufjan's latest album is dedicated to his late partner opens up with an incredible outpouring of everything in his heart. All of Sufjan's artistic forte comes through on this opening track. He finds anger, strength, sorrow, solace, and joy all at once and lays it bare here in noisy, melodious wail.
Yves Tumor - God is a Circle
This rocks AND rolls. Industrial, grungy, post-punk art rock balm for my ears.
Grrrl Gang - Spunky!
Indonesia is doing/has done Britpop better than any. Energetic, fuzzy, vibrating hooks dance all over this song.
Atarashii Gakko! - Tokyo Calling
Thumping bass and volcanic singing with anger at the current state of society. This is a desperate time, the group notes, of malaise, of being trapped and crushed by the systems built so long ago. But yet there is hope in the future, one that starts now as they declare, shouting and grabbing at their destiny: We are marching!
Romy & Fred again... - Strong
An honest-to-god trance bop in 2023 on a banger of a trance/house album. Like much of her work, Romy adds tenderhearted moments into the texture of the song. Small, quiet moments of two lovers punctuate the song between the thumping melodies, like the knowing glance or the smile.
DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ - Honey
Speaking of throwbacks: pseudonymous producer Sabrina output has been staggering. Their album is like a house party, ebbing and flowing through the night. This track stands at the climax as the emblem of their plunderphonics work. It's a golden-hour hued house track suffused with late-summer afternoons.
Kelela - Washed Away
I'm upset that I got to her album, Raven, so late this year, but - oh man - is it something special. Her powerful voice crests and swoons over this ethereal track. The sparse vocals speak of renewal, an ablution with the earth itself, on moving forward.
If you found this, read it, skimmed it, or skipped it, I hope the rest of your year goes by peacefully, restfully.

“All I Can Feel” by DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ
DV:
It’s taken a couple decades, but DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ has finally answered the question no one asked: What would it sound like to build an entire career out of The Avalanches’ “A Different Feeling” and Daft Punk’s “Digital Love”? Turns out you get three hour albums exclusively made up of vibes: the perfect soundtrack for a party where no one wants to pay too much attention to the music, low risk and low reward. Like Jamie XX with any remaining edges gently sanded off. What’s notable about “All I Can Feel,” which takes its title from a Wilson Phillips sample, is the way it sounds like an evolution. There’s more structure here, even if it is spread over seven minutes. And there’s simply more density: compared to something like “New Year’s Resolution”, which runs its Camera Obscura sample into the ground and then backs over it a few times, “All I Can Feel” is positively nimble, fading in and out of multiple hooks before they lose their potency. DJSTTDJ weaves this mashup deftly, with an ebb and flow smooth enough that it’s possible to miss the way the song takes you on a journey and back again. I think "All I Can Feel” is the best song I’ve heard so far this year; it’s definitely the hardest to get out of my head. Maybe mashups really are back.
MG:
I can’t help but agree that “All I Can Feel” sounds like background music. Even “vibes” feels like too strong a descriptor for art that is little more than a cut and paste collage on top of a sturdy 4/4 beat. In fact, “All I Can Feel” strikes me as, unfortunately, sad. It’s as though instead of having that party where no one wants to pay too much attention to the music, DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ embedded the din of the party into the track and then spent the evening alone and lonely. Maybe I’m intoxicated on fear of the AI future, but this stuff sounds so dystopian to me, like we don’t even need friends made of flesh anymore, like any voice beckoning to us from beyond the screen will suffice. If that’s the worst case scenario, the best one might be that “All I Can Feel” is lo-fi study beats for the kids who can’t focus when it’s too quiet.

NSR Swaps: DJ Subatomic Supernova
Depression has been a bitch and I can’t do descriptions for all of them, so I’ll be doing some fight descriptions, but not all of them

Bunk Bed Junction — Celestial Funk
Tumblr media
Nova and J are a bass and keyboard duo. Nova is more like mayday, while J is more like Zuke.
Yes I put Nova in socks and sandals, what of it?
J has a tv for a head. He was born with it.
J was also part of a previous band in the past. It contained him, DK West, and a third member. When they split, West went to underground music, and the third member rose to join Nsr.
———— Their relationship was kind of a love triangle, with West having feelings for the Third Member, the Third Member, and J just having only platonic feelings for his friends.
Celestial funk was rejected because of rock being a relic of the past.
Sayu — Gento
Tumblr media
Gento is a idol DJ who hides his face behind a mask. He was created by four teenagers.
He’s kinda an asshole, buts that’s part of his charm.
The 1st form has just a teal tail. The second phase has the red stripes come in and has the top face, and the final form gives him his yellow stripes and the middle face. And the final phase has the bottom face
Aletha is the musician, Flora makes the assets, Mizn is the animator, and Opal is the editor.
“Welcome loves~”
When you enter Gento’s reef, he is surprisingly kind. He greets you, but asks you to leave. When you refuse, he abides you goodbye and you must go after them. You find the file for his art, and you attack it.
“Baby, this is just childs play!”
He gets an upgraded mask and tail, and Aletha begins remixing the music, and one of you begins to be charmed by the disk jockey. This phase gives him attack you with bass drops that send shock waves in all directions, including yours.
“Do you hear that? They’re cheering for me, not you. I think it’s best you quit while your ahead.”
He gets his final mask and tail as the editor adjusts the lights to be blacklight(quick edit of such below) and reveals the crowd. In this phase, the audience can donate to attack you.
“No, no, no! You have barely, barely scratched the surface of my skill! I demand you leave this place!”
His masks cracks, and he attempts to hold it together, but it shatters, revealing his true face. At this phase he pulls all the stops, and the music becomes a deadly mess.
Yinu — Hua
Tumblr media
Hua is the pianist of the group, but as a musical prodigy, her talents spread across the whole orchestra.
Her mother passed away when she was young. She was a human, and is missed deeply by Hua and her father. She played the piano, and was the closest friend Hua’s father ever had.
Hua’s Father is the composer of their orchestra. He is caring , but expects the best of his musicians, including Hua.
“Ugh, it’s you, I knew you’d come to try and ruin our performance!”
When you first enter the concert hall, Hua is angered by your presence. After some banter she begins to play her piano as the melody rises. A wooden cage is built around her and the rest of the orchestra, and you must break this while being attacked to continue to the next phase.
“Keep playing everyone, I’ll deal with these brats.”
Once the cage is broken, her Father emerges from the shadows. He elevates the orchestra and himself with the vines that form his arms. The orchestra fires musical notes, with Hua’s being able to be parried. When the Composer is downed you can attack Hua to enteer the third phase.
“How dare you! I will not stand for this mockery of my pupils!”
Hua’s Father grows immensely in size, causing all except Hua to flee the crumbling orchestra. He surrounds you, and attacks with thorny vines, pieces of the hall, and giant piano hammers.
“I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU! YOU RUINED OUR PERFORMANCE! YOU DESTROYED THE CONCERT HALL! I HATE YOU!!!”
After her father is defeated, Hua pushes you off your platform before you can do your finisher. Hua’s father asks her to play one last time, and for the first time in years she defies him, venting out her frustrations and anger on her piano. You need finish this.
Once Hua is knocked down, she is catched by her father, but he misses her piano. You all crash to the ground, the piano being destroyed. Her father, of course, blames this on you. Another battle is about to commence, but he is stopped by Hua playing a familiar melody, one made by her mother. He slowly approaches Hua, and gently begins to play with her.
