the way dirk acts towards dave, at least in the original timeline, is so similar to the way he acts towards jake in the alpha timeline.
beta timeline dirk (hereon out referred to as bro for easiness) "trains" dave by sword fighting him often and ruthlessly. he believes that, if dave is strong, then dave will be happy because he can protect himself. bro believes that him and dave are similar, and that they base their satisfaction with themselves on 1. their strength and 2. their perceived masculinity.
in the second timeline, dirk (referred to as hal even though it isnt specifically hal its just easier to differentiate Dirk (ultimate) and dirk (became hal) ok) has a big fat crush on jake, obvi. so, because him and jake cant meet up in person, he builds and sends jake a robot - to train him. hal wants to help jake become strong and achieve his idea of masculinity because thats how he expresses his love.
however, bro took this over the top. someone who cannot express their love in a way other then jokes/violence/otherwise convoluted acts is not fit to raise a kid by himself. also, bro had done these things to dave from a very young age, no doubt fucking up his sense of when hes cared for or whatever blah blah blah daves sad .... anyway hals robot body is too difficult to beat for jake to truly learn anything from it. despite not really harming him, hals gift still had a less positive effect on jake than he would have liked.
both iterations of dirk see the training as nothing more than a simulation, because he is the opponent, and he is nothing but a vessel to carry out the blows to/from dave and jake, he sees himself as In Control. despite the fact the training has a very real effect on both of them, physically and mentally.
dave is fucked up about the guy who raised him fighting him with swords, and jake is messed up over seeing his boyfriend as an obstacle to overcome. so, dirks way of showing his loved ones he cares needs to be changed if he wants to help them, blah blah blah you can analyse the way other characters look at him to understand the way he acts and decipher the reasons he acts the way he does. i dont even like stridercest.

hear me out, but i dont think alt!calliope is that much concerned about canonicity of the story all that much. theres some deeper motive going on here
when john defeats lord english (and gets promptly unsubscribed from life, since his narrative purpose is completed) and davepeta hurls him into the black hole, on the other side in candyverse alt!calliope waits for him to appear and, when he does, devours him to gain the power-up needed to escape the timeline and goes on a hunt for ult dirk to stop him from starting another sburb session
and this is where lord english storyline should be put to rest, but its not as simple as that. this dudes like a cockroach, you just cant get rid of him, he just doesnt disappear, hes always there no matter what, looming over the narrative. and, now thats he was absorbed into alt!calliope, whats left of him? his masterpiece self now residing inside ult dirk
and dirk always had a close connection to caliborn - cal liked dirk the most from all the alpha kids, chatting with him regularly, hal - dirks splinter - became a part of cal and also doc scratch, who was also the host that brough lord english into the universe after beta kids created the green sun (which he also manipulated them into)
basically what im trying to say, dirk wanting to start another sburb session isnt really about maintaining their connection to canon, but it also is about it. caliborn lords over the alpha timeline, and is intrinsically tied to the canon. hes always there, hes already there, and he will always come back. and dirk is narratively tied to the one guy that was responsible with brining him into the story. excellent host, you might say
the point of starting another session is ultimately to bring caliborn back to life, and this is the goal of ult dirk, as the one whos carrying the last splinter of his soul. and thats why alt!calliope is so focused on stopping him. its all about the powerstruggle between the two cherubs, once again
(would also like to point out that rose got fooled twice into bringing lord english into the narrative - once through doc scratch manipulating her into believing deploying the tumor would destroy the green sun, and now through dirk manipulating her into believing starting another session will stop the timeline from deteriorating. girl cannot catch a break jesus)
tldr ult dirk is acting as another doc scratch, and the goal is to revive lord english
but tHATS JUST A THEORY-

dirkjake is the most prominent romantic pairing in homestuck, more so then even davekat, roxygen, or janejake, which are all established in post canon. dirk and jake canonically dated in act six, living out their entire 5(?) month relationship within the medium before breaking up once seeing how their romantic inclinations affected dirk and jake's opinion of, and interactions with each other, respectively. despite how well established their relationship is, we never see a pesterlog between the two directly.
and the audience mightnt even notice on the first, second, or even third read if they arent paying close enough attention.
jake only speaks to jane, lil hal, or brain ghost dirk about his relationship issues.
and dirk only talks to the audience, through his splinters, or to jane about their relationship issues.
poor jane, she deserved better....
although the audience doesnt directly see how they interact, inferences can be made based off 1. the way they speak about each other to other people, 2. the way they speak to people who they perceive as close to one another and 3. images we are given of them near each other, such as the one on the victory platform.
post canon breaks this pattern, having a meat!dirkjake interaction once before dirk leaves, and even then, thats the only instance - ult!dirk cannot access BGD, who candy!jake dreams about.
ult dirk is the alpha timeline of the dirk we consider the "main" one. even here, the only reason for the meat dirkjake is because ult dirk broke through and now controls the narrative. the audience wouldnt have seen this at all if not for ultimate dirks influence on the story.
the characterisation of their feelings about each other and the way the reader can puzzle together their interactions without realizing it is incredibly interesting and honestly one of my favourite devices ever. ourgh....doomed yaoi XD....
