OJT EATS | Tsukemen Michi

In all of Tokyo, this was one of the places that we were most excited to eat at; Tsukemen Michi. This place is easily one of our favourite places in Tokyo and was one of the first places in Japan that JW took me to on one of my early visits to Japan. I remember it being my first real introduction to tsukemen or dipping noodles and it basically spoiled all other tsukemens I've had after that.

Even way back then, there was always a queue so we got there pretty early, shortly after they opened but it turns out that over the years, clearly word has gotten even further out and we were met with a longer queue than expected! It was pretty chilly but we'd wrapped up warm and I knew that the tsukemen would be worth it.

After a litle while in the queue, a menu started making its way down the line and finally into our hands. With a little help from Google Translate, we figured out that there were 3 different types of toppings, ranging from the most basic to the the very large plate of char siu and a full egg.

After about an hour or so, we were close! We were very envious of those 4 that were next up to go in!

When we got even closer, we were invited in to essentially place our orders by buying the tokens for what we wanted at the vending machine. This got a little fiddly as it was all in Japanese but again, it was trusty Google to the rescue and we managed to get what we wanted.

After getting our tickets, we had to venture outside again to wait. Here's what we got: from top down, it was the almond pudding, creme brulee, a large portion of noodles and two of the standard tsukemens with regular toppings.

After almost 2 hours, we were finally in!! No wonder it takes so long, the place only sits 8 people! We were sat at the counter, handed over our tickets and waited.

Soon enough, this beautiful tray of food was placed in front of me. This large portion was 400g of noodles which was a fair chunk of noodles! The char siu looked great and the egg was perfectly cooked. You got spring onions and some seasoned soy but the star of the show was definitely the dipping sauce. Straightaway, you could just smell the seafoody, almost fishy goodness wafting out of the bowl. I could not wait to get stuck in!

So once I started, I found it very hard to remember to take another photo until I was almost through. Every mouthful was amazing. The sauce clung onto the noodles which were themselves so bouncy and thick. It was just an exquisite bowl of noodles.

So I have a very deep impression of my first trip and having the noodles. What I don't think I had the first time was dessert so this was new even to me. They seemed like pretty simple desserts on the face of it but I should've known that any place that does such good noodles isn't going to have bog standard desserts. These were both stunning! They were creamy, smooth and perfectly balanced in terms of sweetness. That sugar crust on the creme brulee was also just thick enough to crack perfectly.
Tsukemen Michi was and remains one of our favourite places in Japan and is still for me, the number one tsukemen anywhere. Now I know that the desserts are as good as they are, there's even more reason to make our way down there!

At KOMATSUAN in OGIKUBO, large bowl of KATSUDON + MORISOBA = 1,300 yen. + This SOBA is my favorite. The SOBA sauce has a strong Tokyo flavor. Put all the chopped green onions and WASABI in the SOBA-TSUYU and stir well. Dip the soba only a third of the way into the SOBA-TSUYU and slurp it all up at once. First comes the coolness of the SOBA-noodles alone, and finally the "thick SOBA-TSUYU + the flavor of the green onions + the slightly tangy WASABI flavor. This is what makes it so good. + After finishing the MORISOBA quickly, the SOBA sauce is mixed with SOBAYU (buckwheat water). The SOBA-TSUYU soup is used as a soup. The bonito broth is very fragrant. + Then came the KATSUDON (breaded pork chops served on top of a bowl of rice). We ate it all at once, holding the bowl.
