“My journey has been very free. I’ve been able to work in different parts of the world and on projects that don’t necessarily obey a typical journey of a person that wants to be famous or work in film. I want young actors to know you don’t have to follow a set line to have a career. Sometimes the line is drawn for actors from the English language. But in my case I can reinvent myself all the time.” — Gael García Bernal (Total Film, 07/2021)
Also: Uruguay (El ojo en la nuca, 2001), Sweden & Thailand (Mammoth 2010), Canada (Blindness 2008, Zoom 2015), Brazil (El pasado 2007, Zoom 2015), Serbia (Zalet), Germany (Herzog's Salt&Fire 2016), Cuba (Wasp Network, 2019), Dominican Republic (Old, 2021)

I think y'all need to listen to the Academy Award Winner song "Al Otro Lado Del Río" ("On the other side of the river") by Jorge Drexler, from the movie "The Motorcycle Diaries" (2004)
And if you have, I recommend you listen to it again. Call me a romantic - the movie is -, but this song ranks high in the "songs that perfectly reflect and completement a film."
youtube
Translation from Spanish under the cut
I dip my paddle in the water I take your paddle with mine. I think I saw a light on the other side of the river.
The day will, little by little, overcome the cold. I think I saw a light on the other side of the river.
Above all, I believe that all is not lost. So many tears, so many tears, and I, I am an empty glass...
I hear a voice that calls me, almost a sigh: Row, row, row... Row, row, row...
In this shore of the world what is not prey is barren. I think I saw a light on the other side of the river.
Above all, I believe that all is not lost. So many tears, so many tears, and I, I am an empty glass...
Row, row, row... Row, row, row...

Do you have any Spanish movie recommendations? It can be really old movies/old Spanish idc! Thanks!
Okay so keep in mind that the majority of these are like the movies you'd probably get assigned to watch in a Spanish/Hispanic film class and I'm going to be missing a lot of good ones but-
El laberinto del fauno / Pan's Labyrinth [horror-ish? but mostly be ready to cry for a while]
Y tu mamá también
Todo sobre mi madre
Las mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios
La historia oficial [big trigger warning on this but Norma Aleandro is a great Argentinian actress and I also liked her in El faro]
Hable con ella
Diarios de una motocicleta [though I have complicated feelings on Che Guevara]
Tesis [horror]
REC [horror]
De lo mío
Las herederas
Cenizas del paraíso
La vida de los peces
Zama
Amores perros
El callejón de los milagros [not everyone's cup of tea]
La ciénaga
Fresa y chocolate
Como agua para chocolate [which is also a book and it's a very good book but it is fun to watch as a movie too]
El norte
El espíritu de la colmena
Tristana
Viridiana
Also I didn't care for them personally but people do recommend Mar adentro and Nazarín
We also watched the Hollywood version of House of the Spirits which is a super famous book in any Latin American literature class - and it was so weird to watch Glenn Close lusting after Meryl Streep. It's not a bad movie but everyone is so famous that I'm immediately taken out of it

Gael discussing asthma, death, and how it influenced his portrayal of Guevara in Diarios de motocicleta.
Source (it only has auto-captions which are terrible so I captioned it and uploaded here rather than just linking) Gifs of the scene they are talking about after the jump (cw: this is a pretty graphic depiction of a serious asthma attack).

2, 11, and 25 for the movie asks pls! and don’t u dare keep it short 🔪 thank u <3
🥹🥹 Thank you for the ask, Jo 🧡 You are so lovely 🧡 Well I don’t think I can keep it short anyway, so…
2. A movie you think is underrated. This one nearly caused my brain to implode because at first I couldn’t come out with anything, then there was too many, and in the end, I’m not sure what movies exactly are underrated??
There is, however one obvious answer, and I’m sure you’ll agree with me: Prospect. Surprisingly profound characters with a deliciously ambiguous dynamic, simple and efficient story, insanely creative visual effects and aesthetics… How is this movie so confidential??
But. I also want to answer We Need to Talk About Kevin, because it’s one of the best movies about motherhood I’ve ever seen, and every time I mention it to someone, they have no idea what movie I’m talking about. Oh and also Sunshine. Immense sci fi movie.
11. A movie you wish you could un-watch. That one is easy, though. Requiem for a Dream. I did not enjoy it. And let me toss in L’Apollonide too. I was dead certain I was going to love it but I came out of the cinema wishing I could take off my skin and boil it clean in the washing machine. Ugh.
25. Your favorite movie. I’m so glad about this one, because I answered it before but of course I got two 😌 Diarios de Motocicleta. That’s another one that changed me.
Again, thank you 🥰🧡🧡🧡
