Eastern Sierras Day 2: Devils Postpile National Monument. Hiked all over the Inyo National Forest and Ansel Adams Wilderness starting at the Rainbow Falls Trailhead inside the Monument heading first to Rainbow Falls and Lower Falls, then over the Mammoth Pass via the PCT/JMT to McLeod and Horseshoe Lakes, back towards Red Meadow and Sotcher Lake, and finally following the Middle Fork San Joaquin River back to the trailhead. One of the coolest hikes I’ve done recently (besides the Narrows) was to Rainbow Falls in Devils Postpile National Monument. This 6 mile hike takes you past Devils Postpile, a formation of basalt, through some fields and forested areas to the 101 foot Rainbow Falls. It’s called Rainbow Falls because at certain points during the day you can see a rainbow in the falls. We were there too early in the day for this but it was still worth it to see the views.
