Staff were dressed in traditionally, they were very helpful, recommended the better reindeer dish and also explained what's in front if me when my food arrived. There are 840 dwarfs in Wroclaw! Told you, Wroclaw is magical! Back in the 80s, communism was present in Poland and police were very strict about secret meetings against the ruling regime. A group of eccentric individuals began a movement called the Orange Alternative, an anti-Soviet movement that used absurdity to stage peaceful and subversive protests. Following the fall of communism, the dwarfs became a symbol of Wroclaw, repurposed as a tribute to the Orange Alternative protesters. The first statue to honour the anti-communist movement, Papa Krasnal (pic 1), was unveiled in 2001 in Świdnicka, 50-067, the spot where many of the Orange Alternative’s protests took place. This is the first time in human history where a government erects a statue honoring an anarchist group! In 2005, the mayor of Wroclaw decided to continue the tradition of having dwarf statues and hired a renowned Polish sculptor Tomasz Moczek, to make five small dwarf statues (20-30cm). They were an instant hit and soon the city demanded more and more dwarfs, each one representing a different profession or an aspect of everyday life. Suddenly, medium to big size businesses wanted to have their own dwarf statues and that’s where the dwarf craze began! There's a story behind every dwarf; maps and even apps to track them, like Polemon Go.
