Kaiju Week in Review (February 18-24, 2024)
Tumblr media
Godzilla Rivals: Mothra vs. M.O.G.U.E.R.A. begins with a standout fight between Mothra and Ebirah. From there, however, the Queen of the Monsters spends most of the story on the sidelines, with a brawl involving Mechagodzilla, Garuda, Jet Jaguar, and M.O.G.U.E.R.A. over the fate of her egg taking center stage. A mech fight on that scale is unusual for a Godzilla comic, and despite the misleading title, it's a decent issue. Writer Johnny Parker II sat down for a lengthy interview with Kevin Derendorf and Raf Enshohma this week; I haven't had time to listen to the whole thing, but I do know he talks about his valiant efforts to put Medical Jet Jaguar from Godzilla Island in the comic.
Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #5 also released this week. Afraid it didn't leave much of an impression on me; the book is juggling a lot of narrative threads now, and I don't see how it wraps them all up satisfactorily with just two issues left. I would've liked to see a more focused cast (and not just because it takes forever to list all the DC characters on Wikizilla each issue, haha). They also finally mention Monarch in this issue, which only makes the absence of the Monsterverse's human characters more conspicious.
Tumblr media
Between Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, March was already going to be a great month at the movies for giant monster fans, but they'll now be joined by an anime classic: The End of Evangelion. GKIDS is bringing it to North American theaters on March 17 and 20 (a Sunday and a Wednesday, respectively). All showings will be in Japanese with English subtitles. This is not, as some reporting has suggested, the first time the film has ever played in the region—I found a Facebook event page for a 2019 screening in Omaha, for instance—but it is certainly the first major release. Be forewarned that if you haven't seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, you'll be confused out of your mind, as the film serves as an alternate ending for the final two episodes. But you've got time to get caught up.
Tumblr media
Like many a Godzilla movie before it, Godzilla x Kong is leaking like a sieve, with a number of alleged screenshots of the Titans now making the rounds online. I normally wouldn't mention such things in this column, but they show a couple of characters who haven't been officially confirmed to be in the movie yet. So here's a warning to be on your guard if you're spoiler-shy.

In Daimajin, the young son and daughter of the benevolent feudal lord Hanabusa flee to the mountains when their parents are slain by the treacherous usurper Odate. Ten years later, when the elderly priestess who has harbored them is also murdered, the rage of the slumbering ancient god that lies beneath the crumbling giant stone idol hidden deep in the forests in the mountains is invoked.
In Return of Daimajin, the wrathful deity is roused from his new home on an island in the middle of a lake by the violent incursions of a vicious warlord.
In Wrath of Daimajin, by veteran jidaigeki director Kazuo Mori, four young boys make a perilous trip to elicit the help of the ancient mountain god in freeing their family members who have been enslaved by a tyrannical lord.

Some nice info about Florian.
Translation:
Mr. Esch, when did you last see Florian Schneider?
Rüdiger Esch: You can see it on the photo, two years ago. There we are sitting at "Da Forno" on Sunday evening in Derendorf. Florian came in, sat down with my son and me, drank his espresso, ate his toast. We had a great time together, for at least an hour. And Florian himself told us the most. He was a real chatterbox that night.
Unusual, right?
Esch: Not necessarily. You somehow saw Florian all the time. He went to Schumacher’s at Oststraße, that's also one of my regular restaurants. He went to the ice cream parlor at Carlsplatz with his scooter, preferably in the morning. He didn't live a totally secluded life. I also met him once at Conrad.
The co-founder of Kraftwerk at "Conrad Electronics", there's something to that.
Esch: He wore a Hawaiian shirt and short pants, nobody recognized him. He was also at Mintropstraße, where the Kling sound studio was located. And what is now the Ellington Bar on Scheurenstraße used to be the Bogletti café and cocktail bar. Florian always sat there in the shop window. It used to be the old Schauland shop where you bought your records. Florian felt comfortable there. At Bogletti they had a good coffee machine, it was simple, but tastefully furnished. He got along well with the owners, who created the "BOGLETTI" out of the old hairdresser's lettering "GOTTLIEB". There he was always talkative, as you would not expect from someone who was in Kraftwerk. Very similar to Wolfgang Flür from Kraftwerk. They’re all nice Rhinelanders who talk a lot.
Even though they’re regarded as unapproachable, silent "man-machines", full of secrets.
Esch: Ralf Hütter is like that. I never saw him being talkative. And Karl Bartos? Not really. You just have to know him a little. When you experience them in a private setting, it has little to do with Kraftwerk's image.
Has Florian Schneider always lived in Düsseldorf?
Esch: Always. Florian used to have an apartment near the Kling Klang Studio. And for the last 15 years he lived on Alexanderstraße, behind the "Zurheide".
How did you hear about his death?
Esch: It's been rumored for quite a while. And then I got phone calls, how sad it was, and that nobody was talking about it. I had contact to Florian's sister. She wrote me: "Flori nonstop. The music will live on forever."
What was Florian Schneider like?
Esch: He was the tinkerer. He studied classical music, like Ralf Hütter, but Hütter and Bartos were responsible for the melodies. Florian was in charge of this speech synthesis, was responsible for everything that involved fiddling. With soldering and effect devices in between. Together with Wolfgang Flür he built the electronic drumset. If I compare it with the Beatles, Florian was John Lennon. The art guy. Not like Paul McCartney, alias Ralf Hütter. That doesn't mean that he was more important than Hütter. Together they were brilliant and greater than the sum of the parts. And if you go further: Wolfgang Flür has parallels to Ringo Starr and Karl Bartos to George Harrison. The allocation is clear. Florian founded the band, he thought about the name and called the first formation together already in the late 60s. He was the only one who was with the band all the way until 2009, as Hütter had left the band for a while to study architecture. For die-hard Kraftwerk nerds, Florian Schneider is Kraftwerk.
With great influence on the work?
Esch: On the first three albums he still played the flute, but they are not allowed to be published anymore. Kraftwerk insists that "Autobahn" is the first album. Florian had his biggest influence on the album "Radio-Aktivität" from 1975. The singer of OMD, Andy McCluskey, who I know well, loves this album. It is the "blueprint" for the whole work of them.
What was Schneider's relationship to Hütter like lately?
Esch: They had nothing to do with each other anymore. They split up in 2009. With law firms. But that's nothing bad, that happens with every big band. They split up neatly, they were not angry at each other and were happy.
Why did he leave the band?
Esch: He didn’t want to go on tour anymore. The obstacle to playing more concerts was always Florian. He didn't want to travel and he wanted to be regulated. Since he left, Kraftwerk has only been touring. They had hardly played at all before. In 2011 I had thought about tackling the book "Electri_City". I then flew to New York to see Kraftwerk's "Man Machine" in the "Museum of Modern Art". Because I thought it was something really unique. I had no idea that they would go on tour non-stop for five years afterwards. When Florian was no longer on tour, Hütter turned Kraftwerk into a brand, also with the help of an agency. For Florian, the following applied: Since they wrote the songs together and managed the naming rights together, he became just as rich - even though he stayed at home. Usually only those who didn't write the songs go on tour (laughs).
What did he like other than music?
Esch: He was very interested in cycling. And in industrial design. Kraftwerk did nothing for most of the 1990s. You met Florian at the flea market. He often looked like he was from the 30s, like he had been stolen from Emil and the Detectives. Flat cap, clamdiggers, knee socks. In those days nobody talked about Kraftwerk. He had his own dealers at the flea market, collected lamps and coat hooks. He wasn't a star there, he was just a collector of industrial design. They were just completely normal. If they weren't on stage, nobody recognized them. Kraftwerk is a working group, a conglomerate of artists. It's like "Gilbert and George". You don't ask them about their pictures either, because they're other people apart from their art. Florian was a committed Düsseldorfer. He went to Rethelgymnasium, to Hinkel, to Carlsplatz. And to Schumacher’s.

Kaiju Week in Review (November 5-11, 2023)
Tumblr media
Raven Banner has opened preorders for their impressive Shin Ultraman Blu-ray. I don't which is more surprising—the new subtitle translation for a movie that came out last year or a new audio commentary for a Toho kaiju film. Alex Rushdy and Kevin Derendorf recorded the commentary, so it's sure to be extremely informative. The film itself should look better than the Cleopatra release too, as it's on a 50 GB disc instead of a 25 GB.
youtube
ILM's animated Ultraman: Rising film has a teaser. Visuals are striking; dialogue seems generic, though there's not much to go on. I am naturally enthralled by the host playing baseball professionally. His uniform is weirdly logo-free, but he may be on the Yomiuri Giants, the "Yankees of Japan" who currently inhabit the Tokyo Dome. The New Tokyo Dome in the trailer has a powerful force field in place of a roof, though physical shielding can be seen moving into place later. You get the feeling that this city is pretty used to kaiju.
Tumblr media
There's a new kaiju manga on the way from Hiro Nakamichi—Kaiju on the Earth: Volcanus. It's based on a 2019 board game where players manage the response to a kaiju attack, and the first chapter will go live on Shogakukan's Sunday Webry website on Christmas Eve. Hopefully an English scanlator or publisher picks it up.
The Ultraman Blazar manga, meanwhile, already has a scanlator on the job. I haven't had a chance to read much of it yet, but the art is quite impressive. And much further down the line, Marvel will be reprinting its 70s Godzilla comic as part of its Marvel Omnibus line next October. Their previous reprint of the series in 2006 was a black-and-white paperback with cheap paper; this promises to be an upgrade in every way. Seeing it with digitally reconstructed color will certainly be interesting too (h/t Maser Patrol).
youtube
A VR game called Godzilla Kaiju Wars dropped some screenshots just in time for (shameless plug) Wikizilla to squeeze it into our Megaguirus Kaiju Profile. Manda and some smaller, original enemies are also in it, and it should be showing up in arcades next year. Another Godzilla arcade game dropping in 2024 is the exceedingly silly-looking Godzilla vs. Kong Smasher. And while most everyone sharing them was relentlessly DMCA'd, a video and a few screenshots leaked out from the mobile game Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers. You control a team of humans instead of monsters, so that's already strike one. Cool to see a comic-exclusive monster (Death Jackal) in it though.

I recently made a guest appearance on the Maser Patrol Podcast to talk about the phenomenal anime series SSSS Gridman (2018, 12 episodes) from Studio Trigger and Tsuburaya Productions. Joining me is Maser Patrol’s regular host Kevin Derendorf (author of Kaiju for Hipsters), Matt Parmley (co-host of the podcast Kaiju Transmissions) and Connor Anderson (of Facebook’s Tokusatsu Monogatari). And in case anyone’s forgotten I wrote a chapter on Tsuburaya Production’s giant hero shows, including Gridman, for the book Giant Creatures in Our World.  The podcast is split into two parts. In Part One we discuss the original 1993 tokusatsu series Denkou Choujin Gridman, its American adaptation Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, and the 2015 anime short Denkou Choujin Gridman: boys invent great hero which ultimately paved the way for the 2018 anime series SSSS Gridman which occupies all of Part Two. You can find both parts here.
