Hi there! Sorry this is random, but I’ve really been looking to find an answer to my question regarding figure skating. I look online and there’s nothing I can find, so it’s just all over the place lol. But I see that you have an interest in skating, so I find it awesome!
As a fellow fanfic writer, I came to ask if a figure skater could also be a coach, at the same time?
Hi and thanks for the ask!
I must preface this by saying that I've been a figure skating fan for only about two years, so I haven't dived overly deeply into the aspects of the sport that go beyond rules, technique, and competitions, but as I'm writing about a skater-coach/skater relationships and know some things from skaters I follow on social media, I have some thoughts on your question.
For all I know, it's possible for a skater to coach another skater or even several skaters (any other skating fans reading this: please correct me if I'm wrong!). I've heard of older skaters coaching younger skaters, such as some skaters choreographing for other skaters. Many skaters study, go to school, or have a job in addition to their training--in this sense, coaching could be treated like a job. Sharing one's knowledge is also beneficial to one's own understanding of the sport. I know that at Champéry, the two senior skaters Koshiro Shimada and Deniss Vasiļjevs have taught younger skaters (I don't remember whether it was novices or bloody beginners), and I bet they aren't the only experienced skaters transferring knowledge to rink mates or less experienced skaters. It's a great way to get a taste for coaching.
Here are some things which imho are worth considering for your character design in advance:
Training locations
Unless your characters aren't already rink mates, it might make sense to have them practice at the same rink. Travelling is expensive and time-consuming and might include adjusting to the new time zone depending on where your characters are based. They already travel to competitions and so it makes sense for them to minimise travel times if that's compatible with their lives. Some irl skaters train not at the rink where their coach teaches and so they meet up only occasionally for a few weeks each season, but as your characters would both compete, they might not want to lose practice time to travelling. Plus, if both practise at the same rink, that would make it more convenient to supervise the other skater. As your coach would still be quite inexperienced in coaching, they will need the extra time with their student. Of course, this depends on what kind of story you have in mind and if you want to make different training locations a source of conflict.
Age/experience
That's my personal opinion, but I think that the skater who wants to coach another skater should be a senior skater due to their greater maturity and experience. There's nothing wrong with a junior skater teaching tricks to another junior skater or a novice skater, but in this case, the your character's coach would likely dissuade them from starting a coaching career that early in their life due to a lack of experience.
Coach and/or choreographer?
Some coaches also choreograph for other skates while others don't. (Some skaters lean more towards creating programmes than coaching and so become a choreographer after their competitive career, or even while they're still competing, e.g. Jason Brown). Usually, they have already some experience in choreographing programmes for themselves and are highly creative and have an excellent sense for music and interpretation.
Rivalry issues?
I've seen people voicing concern about a skater coaching another skater if they compete in the same category (e.g. men's singles or women's singles). To me, this implies that these skaters already regard each other as rivals, in which case they wouldn't start a coach/student relationship in the first place. Plus, figure skating is an artistic sport, which may skaters practise to express themselves on the ice and push themselves to see how far then can go--a skater's focus is usually on themselves. Apart from the famous rivalries of Harding and Kerrigan or Plushenko and Yagudin, I haven't heard a lot about skaters developing unhealthy attitudes against their co-competitors (which doesn't mean they don't exist, but imho such attitudes contradict the artistic aspects for the sport and a good coach would help a skater to re-direct their mind to healthier attitudes). Many irl skaters are friendly with each other and from what I know from interviews, each other at best, they maintain a friendly rivalry to push each other. So, coming back to your characters, rivalry could only be an issue if both of your skaters compete in the same category and on the same level (e.g. both are senior women/men who compete in the top 10)
Ideally, a coach who still competes should be mature enough to not only share their knowledge but to not let feelings of rivalry influence their coaching. If you want to turn this into a conflict in your story that arises once your characters start working together (which could be the start of an interesting character arc and exploration of this character and their relationship with the character(s) they want to coach), then it would make sense to have other characters, who know this one character closely, voice their concern about their plan to become a coach in the first place. Ideally, this character's own coach knows them well enough to voice their opinion.
I hope this was helpful. Please let me know if you have any further questions!
In addition to this, you could research former competitive skaters who became coaches not long after they retired from competition, like Stéphane Lambiel or Jorik Hendrickx. Sometimes, they talk about this in interviews and I know that people doubted Lambiel's aptitude due to his young age.
I've tagged this post as "figure skating" to give other skating fans the chance to add to this discussion.

Look, I know that without an absolute flop fest from Yuzu, Shooms, Nate, etc. Deniss doesn’t stand a chance for a podium at worlds or the olys. But fuck it, how can I enter the timeline where that performance is OGM material?? Plz, I wanna be there!!
