Kiss of Death - Corpse Fic

Prompt: “He’s a bad kisser”

Backstory: Y/N is a streamer and secretly dating Corpse, not even their friends know. Other than Dave, of course. They’re playing proximity chat among us with Valkyrae, Toast, Sykkuno, Pewdiepie, JackSepticeye, Pokimane, Ludwig, and Dave (boyinaband).

Genre: Fluff + humor

A/N: Okay. First of all, writing an author’s note really threw me back to my Wattpad days but, anyway. I just wanna say feel free to send little prompt requests in my ask box for fics. I won’t write smut, I know I have for kpop artists in the past and I may write smut again in the future but for now, it’s a hard no for all fics. I will write mainly for Corpse Husband, Valkyrae, BTS, and Dream Catcher. Possibly other YouTubers or kpop groups just ask and I’ll let you know! I also will write for some book fandoms, I can’t list all of them so again just ask, please. I’ll get to requests whenever I can so please be patient while waiting.

Until then please enjoy the random prompts I’ve found that I thought would be cute :)

You were playing among us with your friends and your boyfriend, as usual. The only difference was you were using the proximity chat mod which you had never done before. Because you guys were using that mod every time Corpse got imposter he was doing his “kiss of death” thing.

As you loaded into the game you saw the word crewmate pop up on your screen. Everyone started joking about being a crewmate or imposter and you chuckled to yourself. “I am just a crewmate doing crewmate things. I am doing keys, because I am just a crewmate.” You stated while walking over to the keys task, knowing that you don’t even have keys this round.

“Y/N’s faking keyyysss.” Poki called.

“She’s just reminding everyone to fake keys, guys, everyone fake keys right now,” Sean said, moving his character on top of yours in front of keys. The was a chorus of agreements as almost everyone did the same. Once that was done you split off from the group.

“Guys… I think it’s Poki, she didn’t fake keys.” You said to your chat, laughing to yourself. You went around doing your tasks. You came across Sykkuno in O2, “Hey Sykkuno, whatcha doing?”

He paused in the doorway of the tree room, “Oh! hi Y/N. I’m uh just doing my tasks.”

You cleared the trash shoot, “Oh yeah? Just a crewmate doing crewmate things?”

Sykkuno giggled, “Uh, yep. Just doing crewmate things. Hey, you- you wanna stand on this vent with me?”

You hesitated, knowing there’s absolutely no way for you to figure out if Sykkuno is just being himself or is actually the imposter, “I- You know what yes I would love to Sykkuno.” You walked into the tree room.

“Oh- really? That… Was very enthusiastic.” The two of you walked onto the vent by the tree, stacking on top of each other, “You’re not the imposter, right? You’re not gonna kill me.

“Oh, of course not, Sykkuno. I mean, you know, maybe.” You love making yourself look extra suspicious to him because that’s how he plays, “Here. I’ll click the spot where the kill button is and we’ll see what happens, okay?”

“Oh, Jesus-” He gasped.

You clicked the spot on the screen, “Hear me clicking?” You both laughed.

“Uh yeah I do, that means it can’t be you huh?” He said, “Here I’ll do it too.”

You yelped a little as the body reported screen came up, scaring you.

“I thought I just fucking died.” You said, trying to calm your breathing.

“Honestly, me too.” Sykkuno said, “There’s so many people dead.”

Poki reported the body and the screen showed that Toast, Sean, and Dave were dead, “So Rae and I just walked up on Toast’s body. And I don’t think it’s Rae, I’ve been with her for a good chunk of this round.”

“Soo it could be both of you.” You pointed out.

“Why are you susing me right now??” Poki exclaimed.

“You didn’t fake keys!” You yelled.

“She’s right!” Pewds yelled, remembering that from the beginning of the round, “What the fuck, Poki?”

Corpse laughed, “That’s a little sus Imane.”

Poki laughed, “I can’t believe I’m getting sussed cause I didn’t fake a task.”

“Anyways, I think it’s Rae and Poki. It definitely couldn’t have been Sykkuno, we were chilling on a vent.” You stated. Corpse hummed to himself.

Sykkuno vouched for you, “Yep that’s true. And we did a foolproof test so it’s not either of us.”

“What was the test?” Lud asked

“Well, we both clicked the kill button and neither of us are dead, so.” Sykkuno pointed out.

“You clicked the kill button?” Rae asked, “Wait, so you’re both imposters? You clearly can’t kill each other if you’re imposters.”

You sighed, “I don’t know why Sykkuno had to say it like that but we clicked where the kill button should’ve been and nothing happened. So it’s not us.”

“So there’s two pairs.” Corpse mused to himself.

Pewds brought his mic really close to his mouth, “Get ‘em out of here.”

You yelled over him, “Hold on hold on, it’s seven we can’t vote on seven. Kind of sus that you’re pushing to vote on seven.”

“I’m not sus you’re sus.” He declared.

“Let’s skip, I’m gonna stay with Sykkuno and protect him.” Lud announced as the ‘I voted’ sticker popped up next to his name. Everyone started voting to skip.

“If Ludwig dies it’s Sykkuno.” Pewds concluded as the timer ran out.

“What???” Sykkuno wailed. You quickly ran to go to Lab on your own, afraid of Rae and Poki.

Rae walked behind you into Lab, “ Ahhh- Hi please don’t kill me.”

“No no no I would never,” Rae said, making her voice sound sarcastic on purpose as you guys walked into decontamination. You started to scream dramatically.

“Heeeeeeelp. Heeeeellppp! She’s gonna kill me.” You pushed your character into the door to specimen, desperately waiting for it to open. Once it finally did you rushed down into specimen and she ran after you. You ran around specimen with her chasing after you.

“Stop running. Y/N. Y/N! Hey- Stop running!” She yelled after you.

“Nooooo.” Corpse walked into specimen from the bottom and stood off to the side watching the two of you, “Coooorpse, protect me.” You yelled. He moved his character between you and Rae.

“Yeah, uh, of course. I’ll protect you don’t worry.” He said. Rae stopped in front of him.

“I said I wasn’t gonna kill you Y/N.” She insisted.

You fake cried a little, “You didn’t say you couldn’t kill me though! Corpse, please. Wait-” You realized Corpse could 100% be the imposter right now, “Corpse… It’s not you is it?”

“No no, I’m gonna protect you.” He promised.

“....Does that mean it’s you but you’re gonna kill Rae to protect me?” You asked. They both laughed and Rae backed away from Corpse.

“She knows too much Corpse, she knows too much!” Rae yelled. You started to scream for help again and run around.

“Hey hey hey, relax.” Corpse said, following you. You ran towards bottom decontamination, getting stuck at the door again, “Don’t worry. Y/N, shhh. It’s okay, just-” He made a smooching noise and the kill animation popped up on your screen.

You let out a shriek. “I can’t believe- Well, hi chat.” You giggled and started reading the chat again, “‘You got a kiss from Corpse, how do you feel?’ He’s a really bad kisser, guys. I mean it, did you see that? He kissed me and then STABBED me. An awful kisser.” You shook your head. A body was reported and the meeting screen popped up. They discussed yours and Poki’s death Corpse and Rae vouching for each other and Lud and Sykkuno vouching for each other, leaving Pewds the only one without an alibi and got him voted out. The defeat scream popped up showing Rae and Corpse as the imposters.

Corpse POV

Before joining the lobby again he decided to read chat for a second and talk to his fans. “I’m sorry I can’t really look at chat that much while we’re doing this mod it’s just hard cause everyone can hear you, you know.” He read through the recent super-chats, thanking people as he went. He quickly scanned the rest of the chat. People were spamming that Y/N had called him a bad kisser, “Wait- she- Y/N said what??” He joined the lobby, “Y/N what the fuck?”

“What’d I do??” Y/N questioned.

“Did you really tell your chat I’m a bad kisser? Why are you lyyyying?”

“I-” The whole group started gasping and talking over each other, “I meant in the game! You- everyone shut up oh my god please-”

“Okay okay okay, let her talk guys. Try and talk your way out of this Y/N.” Corpse chuckled.

“Okay, before I get myself into a scandal. In-game, before you killed me, you gave me a little kiss. Then my chat was like how do you feel and I was like you know what, that was an awful kiss I died from it.”

“Ohhh, that makes sense.” Corpse said.

“Wait!” Rae interrupted, “What else would she have to go off of other than in-game?…” There was a long silence.

Corpse was the one to break the silence. “You know what, gamer bladder. Bathroom break.” Everyone laughed and reluctantly agreed.

Y/N POV

You tried to stay calm and talk to your chat about any other topic but your chat was going insane speculating about you and Corpse.

Corpse came into the room and you quickly held up one finger off-camera to tell him to wait a second.

“Uh, hold on just a second guys.” You muted your headphones and took them off. You started to work on turning your webcam off but he reached over and grabbed the arm of your chair, rolling it towards him.

You squealed, “Corpse! What are you doing?”

“I’m a bad kisser, huh? I’m a bad kisser?” He started peppering your face with kisses. You giggled. He planted his hands on the armrests of your chair, practically trapping you in place. He raised an eyebrow at you, a smirk plastered on his lips, “Hmm?”

You cupped his face and kissed him. He started to pull you closer to him but you pulled back, “No, you’re not a bad kisser, baby. You’re the best kisser.” He kissed you again and then went back to his filming room. You slid your chair back to your computer, pretending as if nothing happened. You put your headphones back on and scanned the chat. There were a couple of people being like we saw that hand but you ignored it and continued playing.

Mobile - Terms - Rules

“Alright folks, here’s the laundry list a’ rules teh this here blog.

1. This blog o’ mine is private & semi-selective - meanin’ I only do rp threads with folks I follow and I won’t go followin’ everyone who follows me. (There are exceptions but those are rare and far between.)

2. I won’t follow yeh unless you have an about page and a rules page. That’s it. Size doesn’t matter so long as they’re there and legible. There are exceptions to this rule, but only if you’re an established canon character of whatever world/series you’re from. But even then, yeh need a link teh source material so I can do research on yeh before interactin’ with yeh.

Note! My Mun ‘n’ I will also be unfollowing blogs who spam their blogs with content unrelated to their blogs or characters. (No offense to these blogs, we just like havin’ a clean dashboard.)

3. Memes/Asks/magic!anons are open and welcomed, but RP starter asks are reserved for rp blogs only. (Sorry personals!)

Note! My mun and I reserve the right teh not answer asks. There are times when my biographer doesn’t feel up teh respondin’ teh certain asks. That don’t mean fer yeh teh stop sendin’ ‘em, it just means she ain’t feelin’ that ask or meme and wants teh do somethin’ else. Also, my Biographer has a limited amount a’ stamina teh do things so please be understandin’ and don’t take this as a sign that she ain’t interested in yeh and yer blog as a whole.

4. My brother and I are open teh havin’ relationships. Friendships, romantics, the works -but let’s not get ahead of ourselves and have a few threads before we decide anythin’. Incompatibility is pretty lethal for my kind, y'know? So let’s get teh know each other first, then we’ll see how relationship things work out.

5. My biographer(mun) and I don’t do smut. Though my biographer is of age (27+) and I got no problem doin’ flirty or even suggestive stuff, fade-to-blacks are definitely preferred.

6. If yeh need somethin’ tagged, lemme know so I can’ tag and bag it for relocation. I don’t want my valued customers gettin’ too spooked teh buy merchandise, if yeh know what I mean. Current tags will include tw and tags with a tw: and whatever it is that needs taggin’.

There’s no need teh hang out yer dirty laundry ’n’ make a dramatic witch-hunt ’n’ smear campaign about it. ((We’ve seen too many folks run out a’ fandoms by folks fer upsettin’ the wrong folks, disagreein’ on a topic, ‘n’ unfollowing the wrong person fer the “wrong reason"—a reason that was only brought to light after pressure from said witch-hunters to reveal it.)) All in all, if someone is as bad as yeh say, report ‘em ‘n’ get on with yer life. Don’t be floodin’ or draggin’ me ‘n’ other people inteh it.

That said, if yeh have a problem with this blog here, yer more ‘n’ welcome teh bring it up civilly teh my biographer. However, just know she don’t take well to point-blank neanderthalic hate mail. Plain ol’ waste a’ time if yeh ask me.

9. My Biographer retains any and all copyright to all original materials generated by this blog. Meanin’ anything she writes, draws or creates in some other such medium belongs exclusively teh her. Copyright infringement is illegal folks, so watch yer back.

10. if yer a friggin’ porn blog or some other blog endorsin’, promotin’ said illicit activities ooc, yer gonna be blocked. Pardon my frankness, but just because my biographer is of age (around 26 or so) and she and I indulge in slight nsfw-ish dealin’ with horrific, violent, and/or possibly suggestive themes, does not mean we have the time or patience teh be dealin’ with straight up porno freaks. If my author doesn’t like doin’ smut in writin’, preferin’ a fade teh black if ever the situation comes up, what makes you think they like seein’ it on the screen in full color?

“That aside, porn and sexually explicit things make my Biographer very uncomfortable. There are certain things they’re okay with - Suggestive is fine, nsfw-ish, and but full view a’ the nitty gritty pump-and-go action is way outa line fer them. It’s why they have NSFW on their black list - so they can choose whether or not to view or block said material. So if yeh could be a pal an’ tag that stuff, it makes goin’ through the dash easier too.

“So consider this yer warnin’, porn blogs, I don’t tolerate that kind of garbage in my inner circles…

11. If yeh want to have a conflict-based thread, chat it up with my mun first. Whether it’s gonna be a short thing via asks or yer lookin’ teh make or resolve conflict between yer folks ‘n’ those over here, be sure teh talk it out with our biographer first. As she’d say, “Unplotted angst/conflict tends to end up causing blocks between muns & muses. So let’s talk out their issues & plan a resolution before we start threading that rp.”

12. If I cross/break yer terms/rules by accident or mistake, lemme know so I can fix it, a'right? Again, I hate makin’ people uncomfortable, especially when the majority of us are here just to have a good time.

13. If we’re associates/mutuals ‘n’ yeh wanna part ways, please let me know 'n’ if yeh can, do a soft block. I don’t want teh come off as disrespectful teh yeh 'n’ bother yeh when yeh don’t want teh do business with me. But if we’ve known each other fer a while, I would like at least a chance teh say goodbye 'n’ part on good terms. I know me 'n’ my biographer ain’t perfect, but partin’ with friends is hard enough without losin’ the chance teh say goodbye.

Dimension Wave Chapter 25 — Defensive Battle

“Yeah, I just wanted to let you know that the event’s started here.”

“Gotcha. I hope it’s lucrative for you, Kizuna.” “You too. Earn lots, okay? See ya.”

As I ended the chat with Alto, I turned back to my party members. The three of them were already engaged in battle against monsters and the fight was only getting more intense. Other parties were in the same predicament. It was truly like a battlefield. Our reinforcements include my sisters, Alto, and others. We just have to hold out more until our main forces arrive.

‘I’m telling you, the enemies came out of nowhere! Send backup now!’ ‘It’s the same over here!’

… the local chat was a mess. Everybody was in a state of confusion and yelling at each other. There was no way to calmly speak to each other. Now that I’ve finished calling for reinforcements, it was time for me to return my allies. With my Cetus Longsword in hand, I joined the fray.

‘Compose yourselves!’

A voice boomed across the battlefield. It was so loud that my legs almost gave out. All other party leaders must have felt the spirit from the voice as everyone fell into silence. That’s something that only happens in a VR game. If it were a PC MMORPG, no one would listen.

‘I believe we have all called for reinforcements. Our duty now is to do whatever it takes to resist the enemy and wait for our comrades!’

That’s certainly not wrong. I look ahead at the monsters. We don’t have enough people on our side, but it’s not a huge deficit.

‘Engage in a fighting withdrawal! Then, all party leaders shall report on their current situation with their map coordinates. It is utmost important we have a strong grasp on our own forces!’

Oh, I should point out that the map looks like this.

It wouldn’t be hard to get a sense of where people are with their coordinates.

‘I shall speak first. I am at C3, in the middle of the action. There is a black tower in construction beyond the hill and the swarm of enemies!’

A black tower? That’s probably a monument us players have to destroy. Well, with the number of monsters in front of us, that’s not something we can do right now, so let’s wait for backup. Alright! Let’s follow that person’s defensive battle tactics. I took a deep breath and shouted as loud as I could.

‘I’m at B5, right flank. Currently engaged with enemies! I have already called for reinforcements!’

I followed suit and reported our status. The enemies were flooding in from all three paths and everybody was engaged in combat. We have no choice but to go on the defensive until support arrives.

‘Reinforcements are not the end-all be-all but do hold fast for help!’

The voice booms back at me. I should get back to battle since I’ve finished reporting, though I could’ve done it while fighting. I headed back to my friends and see Yamikage first. She’s at the rear of the party which makes sense.

“Cleaver! We’ll form a defense until we get reinforcements. Let’s play it safe, everyone!” “Understood!” “Aye, aye!” “‘kay.”

Cleaver connected with a Dimensional Skeleton as I spoke to my friends. It’s a tough situation, but not an impossible one. The people beside us seem to be former frontliners too. We won’t get defeated so easily.

“Kizuna, you should focus on wide-area attacks.” “Yeah, they’re a huge swarm, but it’s not like I have any other skills.”

Cleaver—a beginner’s skill for gutting weapons—is a single-target skill. Luckily, it seems to work well at the skeletons, but that kill was but a drop in the bucket. I’m not trying to minimize the importance of a single kill though. Oh, right. I should probably tell the others.

‘There are lots of ‘em, so focus on area of effect attacks!’

The other parties probably didn’t need to be reminded, but just in case.

“Speed Gutting… Cleaver!”

I activated both skills in a row. Speed Gutting helps make me feel a little nimbler, so I used it as a self-buff. Every little bit counts, right? Or at least, I’ve no choice but to do so until our reinforcements arrive.

“Kizuna, try not to spam—” “I can get it back with every kill. What’s important now is to kill as much as we can!” “That makes sense. Then, I shall use… Wild Dance, the Second: Bloom!”

That the biggest advantage Spirits have over the other races. We can keep using our skills with the Energy we gain from every kill. Though we’re weak normally, spamming skills might actually be beneficial to us. Each fallen Dimensional Skeleton gets replaced by another of their kind, but we just have to keep at it.

“Keep firing, archers! Rain upon them!”

Someone, somewhere called out. What a staggering number of arrows. That’s gotta hit at least something. I glance over my shoulder to see a party of archers shouting out their skills. Kanata had mentioned before, but any AoE attacks will not hit allies. Instead, the arrows rained down upon the horde of enemies. Piercing attacks like that don’t work very well against skeletons, but it still did quite a bit of damage. The enemies aren’t advancing as quickly now. Perhaps they’re trying to avoid the arrows. They’re not letting up so easily.

“Cleaver!” “… Toggling.”

Even though her specs are split between crafting and combat, Sheryl was fighting as well. That’s the second time she’s used Toggling this week. It’s a skill that does piercing damage and was very effective against fish-type monsters. And here, her skill pierced through three monsters at the same time.

“I, too, shall use my special ninja skills!” “Special ninja skills? You mean Drain?” “Nay.” “… what?”

Normally, Yamikage uses nothing but Drain. It’s strong for us four, but almost definitely trash-tier for other parties. She’s fixated on Drain, but she’s saying she knows other skills too? It must be super powerful. Yamikage finished casting as we take down some more Dimensional Skeletons.

“Here be my Circle Drain!”

…

“Ain’t that still just Drain?!”

A great purplish black circle appeared on the ground and attacked the skeletons, then orbs of green floated over to her, much like normal Drain… except these orbs are way bigger. The area is huge on that skill. It hit 10 of them at once. I don’t think she has another chance to use this skill. Whatever. If it’s Yamikage’s Drain, it’s gotta be pretty good.

“There’s so much I want to say to you, but just keep spamming it!” “Verily!”

Still, that was yet another drop in the bucket. We simply don’t have enough people on our side. This really is a raid battle. I mean, obviously.

“Gah!”

I was busy spamming my skills but left an opening for four attacks on me, totaling 470 damage. A single hit doesn’t do too much, but it adds up quickly.

“Kizuna! Wild Dance, the Third: Cherry Blossoms!” “Thanks! Cleaver!”

There are lots of AoE skills for folding fans—perfect for this fight. Shouko took down five enemies at once with that attack. Even with using all those skills, I’ve been gaining just a little Energy. But if I keep getting hit then it means nothing. It’s all thanks to Shouko that I didn’t get a fifth time there.

“Kizuna, let us fall back. We are overextended.” “Damn! Okay!”

I took a calm look at our surroundings and as Shouko had said, we’re isolated. Skill spamming is effective and all, but we’ll be screwed if we get flanked from the sides. We fought off the enemies to the left and right as we began to withdraw.

Chris Yukine: "The SDF and US Military are definitely more thinly stretched than they are here."

Kirika Akatsuki: "Oh, I know! How about teaching the people on the other side about the Sakurai Theory and Symphogears?"

Genjuro Kazanari: "Hmm. It would make things simpler if it were possible. But to give you my honest opinion, I think it's a no-go."

Kirika Akatsuki: "Why's that?"

Genjuro Kazanari: "The Sakurai Theory and Gears could ruin that world's power balance. It's not something to be taught lightly."

Elfnein: "I agree. The first government that learns of it could then possibly conceal it and use it for personal gain."

Elfnein: "Furthermore, the Sakurai Theory itself has many aspects that even I haven't fully understood yet."

Elfnein: "The Symphogear system especially is like a giant black box."

Elfnein: "Thus, even if we did provide them with the Sakurai Theory, it would be difficult for them to comprehend."

Genjuro Kazanari: "If you force progress in that world, you'll create distortions. It has its own timeline to follow."

Genjuro Kazanari: "Forcing the parallel world's timeline forward isn't necessarily the right thing to do."

Chris Yukine: "But what about all the Noise victims in that world?"

Genjuro Kazanari: "That's... a difficult question."

Shirabe Tsukuyomi: "It's mostly the same road, but once you start walking down it, it becomes clear that it's not quite the same."

Kirika Akatsuki: "Sometimes, I find myself looking for shops that were in the parallel world."

Chris Yukine: "You don't say. You know your home isn't this way, right?"

What is an Email Blast and How to Send it Right

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, email blasts are still a thing.

Whether you’re launching a new product, announcing a massive sales campaign, or promoting your new book – you’re most likely going to start with an email blast.

Better yet, you’d start with an email campaign.

Is there a difference? – you may ask. We’ll talk about this in a moment.

You’ll also learn about the best practices you should follow when sending your email blasts and examples for you to get inspired by.

What is an email blast?

When someone says they’re going to send an email blast, they usually mean that they’ll send an email message to a large number of recipients, all at the same time.

Many marketers (myself included), upon hearing the term email blast, still imagine something similar to the following message:

That’s because, at least in the past, email blasts:

Were sent to as many people as possible, no matter if the sender had the right permissions for these types of campaigns,

Were mostly used on an ad hoc basis. They were not part of a larger strategy aimed to build a long-term relationship with the audience,

And it didn’t matter who was on the receiving end, what mattered was the number of clicks the campaign would generate.

Email blasts were very much like spam.

But as language evolves, so has the understanding of the term email blast. These days, many marketers use it interchangeably with the term email campaign.

I, however, still see them as two slightly different things.

And since Google tends to show different results in SERPs for both of these terms, in this post we’re going to treat them as two separate things.

Key differences: email blasts vs email campaigns

So what is the difference between an email blast and an email campaign?

Naturally, as an email service provider, we’re going to be referring only to the situation where the sender has the right to communicate with their recipients (permission-based marketing).

In theory, email blasts are:

Sent to the entire email list,

Not targeted or personalized,

Sent at the same time, no matter where the subscribers are located.

Now, again, in theory, email campaigns may be:

Sent to a single or multiple segments,

Personalized to reflect the recipients’ preferences or needs,

Sent according to the recipients’ time zone or in response to their past behavior.

This is, however, only in theory.

As a matter of fact, our recent studies still suggest that 53% of email marketers send the same message to all their recipients.

In other words, most email marketers still send out email blasts.

So is there any better way to run your email communication?

There certainly is.

Below, we’re going to provide you with several tips on how you can do this.

1. How to send an email blast

First off – how do you send an email blast so that it generates high engagement and a positive ROI?

The three key elements to this include choosing the right audience, the right set of tools, and keeping the goal in mind.

Here’s what we mean:

Choosing the right audience

Rather than buying an email list (or even renting it), you should build one instead.

Organically built email lists have many advantages over databases that you can scrape or buy online. They generate higher returns, help you maintain strong deliverability, and, well, are legal

Now, how do you build an email list?

The answer comes down to having three things in place:

Driving traffic onto the page where the form’s presented

Something to offer in exchange for the email address

Testing different list building methods

In addition, you may want to read this post where we explain the process of how you can build an email list using lead funnels, from start to finish.

But, building an email list isn’t all there is to making your email blasts effective. You also need to make sure to keep your database clean and your contacts engaged. Otherwise, your messages won’t generate the results you’re hoping for, or even worse – they may be landing in the spam folder.

Let’s consider what it takes to keep your communication engaging.

Based on the data from the Email Marketing Benchmarks report, we can see that emails that beat the average results in terms of open and click-through rates tend to have one of the following characteristics:

They’re personalized, i.e., the content is tailored to meet their recipients’ needs.

They contain visual or engaging content, e.g., videos.

They’re often automated, which means they reach the email recipients at the optimal time.

While employing these tactics doesn’t guarantee instant success, it can definitely help you increase your email campaign engagement rates – and put you ahead of your competitors, too.

One example of a company that maintains high subscriber engagement by running A/B tests and personalizing their email campaigns is a lead generation agency called Submission Technology.

These results aren’t something outside of a typical marketer’s reach.

Let’s take personalization, for instance.

In the example of Submission Technology, they’re segmenting their audience and delivering personalized email campaigns based on their users’ gender.

For an ecommerce brand, this should be a relatively easy tactic to apply.

Similarly, you could segment your audience based on their purchase history or engagement level.

You can actually achieve this pretty easily using the engagement score feature in GetResponse.

Choosing the right set of tools

Whether you’ve already built an email list or are about to start one, you’ll need a technological partner to back you up.

Your email blast service or email service provider (ESP) plays an important role when it comes to building and maintaining strong deliverability.

The ESP usually takes care of various processes like bounce and complaint handling, managing the unsubscribe requests, delivering your messages, contacting the ISPs, authenticating your communication, and providing you with analytical reports.

Keeping the end goal in mind

In email marketing, as is the case with other marketing channels, it pays off to keep your end goal in mind.

What is that you want your email blast or campaign to achieve?

Click-throughs to your site? Resource downloads? Product orders?

The answer to this question should guide you when designing your messages.

It should dictate what you’re going to include in your subject line, the preheader, the copy, and most importantly – in the call to action.

All of the components of your message should point your audience towards the action you want them to perform.

Ideally, you’ll have one primary call to action. This way, it won’t compete for attention with other buttons or text links.

If this isn’t realistic in your case, make sure to keep it the most prominent one.

You’ll want to test this approach, but usually, it’s best to limit the number of options you present to your audience. By offering too many options, you may be thinking you’re providing them value, but in reality, you’re pushing them into the paralysis by analysis state.

Here’s an example of an email message that offers just one primary call to action button.

2. What is the best time to send an email blast?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to running email marketing campaigns.

There’s no easy answer, even though we’ve tackled it a couple of times in the past in the Email Marketing Benchmarks report or this infographic.

In my opinion, generalizing that your entire audience will open your email blast at a certain time or day of the week is not the right approach.

Consumers are all different, and they change their behavioral habits depending on the situation they’re in.

So here are the steps I propose, in this specific order:

Rather than picking the ideal time for everyone, use an algorithm that’s going to adjust the email sending time for each of your contacts individually. In GetResponse, this feature is called Perfect Timing.

If you’d rather choose that your email blast reaches your audience at a specific time, go ahead and analyze this report to pick the most optimal hour. Once you’ve selected the appropriate time slot (10 AM and 2 PM seem to be the most promising), send your email blast using the Time Travel feature. Similarly to Perfect Timing, it’ll adjust the time of the sendout for you, but this time only to make sure that the message reaches your audience at a specific hour according to their time zone.

Email blasts, broadcasts, campaigns – it doesn’t matter

As long as your campaigns are purely permission-based and you’re following the email marketing best practices the naming is a secondary thing.

How to Shop Online Like a Security Pro

‘Tis the season when even those who know a thing or two about Internet scams tend to let down their guard in the face of an eye-popping discount or the stress of last-minute holiday shopping. So here’s a quick refresher course on how to make it through the next few weeks without getting snookered online.

Adopting a shopping strategy of simply buying from the online merchant with the lowest advertised prices can be a bit like playing Russian Roulette with your wallet, for the simple reason that there are tons of completely fake e-commerce sites out there looking to separate the unwary from their credit card details.

Even people who shop mainly at big-name online stores can get scammed if they’re not wary of too-good-to-be-true offers. For example, KrebsOnSecurity got taken for hundreds of dollars just last year after trying to buy a pricey Sonos speaker from an established Amazon merchant who was selling it new and unboxed at huge discount.

I later received an email from the seller, who said his Amazon account had been hacked and abused by scammers to create fake sales. Amazon ultimately refunded the money, but if this happens to you around the holidays it could derail plans to get all your shopping done before the expected gift-giving day arrives.

Here are some other safety and security tips to keep in mind when shopping online:

-WHEN IN DOUBT, CHECK ‘EM OUT: If you don’t know much about the online merchant that has the item you wish to buy, take a few minutes to investigate its reputation. After all, it’s not uncommon for bargain basement phantom Web sites to materialize during the holiday season, and then vanish forever not long afterward.

If you’re buying from an online store that is brand new, the risk that you will get scammed increases significantly. How do you know the lifespan of a site selling that must-have gadget at the lowest price? One easy way to get a quick idea is to run a basic WHOIS search on the site’s domain name. The more recent the site’s “created” date, the more likely it is a phantom store.

-USE A CREDIT CARD: It’s nearly impossible for consumers to tell how secure a main street or online merchant is, and safety seals or attestations that something is “hacker safe” are a guarantee of nothing. In my experience, such sites are just as likely to be compromised as e-commerce sites without these dubious security seals.

No, it’s best just to shop as if they’re all compromised. With that in mind, if you have the choice between using a credit or debit card, shop with your credit card.

Sure, the card associations and your bank are quick to point out that you’re not liable for fraudulent charges that you report in a timely manner, whether it’s debit or a credit card. But this assurance may ring hollow if you wake up one morning to find your checking accounts emptied by card thieves after shopping at a breached merchant with a debit card.

Who pays for the fees levied against you by different merchants when your checks bounce? You do. Does the bank reimburse you when your credit score takes a ding because your mortgage or car payment was late? Don’t hold your breath.

-PADLOCK, SCHMADLOCK: For years, consumers have been told to look for the padlock when shopping online. Maybe this was once sound advice. But to my mind, the “look for the lock” mantra has created a false sense of security for many Internet users, and has contributed to a dangerous and widespread misunderstanding about what the lock icon is really meant to convey.

To be clear, you absolutely should run away from any e-commerce site that does not include the padlock (i.e., its Web address does not begin with “https://”). But the presence of a padlock icon next to the Web site name in your browser’s address bar does not mean the site is legitimate. Nor is it any sort of testimonial that the site has been security-hardened against intrusion from hackers.

The https:// part of the address merely signifies that the data being transmitted back and forth between your browser and the site is encrypted and can’t be read by third parties. Even so, anti-phishing company PhishLabs found in a survey last year that more than 80% of respondents believed the green lock indicated that a website was either legitimate and/or safe.

Now that anyone can get SSL certificates for free, phishers and other scammers that ply their trade via fake Web sites are starting to up their game. In December 2017, PhishLabs estimated that a quarter of all phishing Web sites were outfitting their scam pages with SSL certificates to make them appear more trustworthy. That percentage has almost certainly increased a year later.

-CHCEK THE SHIPPING

Often times, items that are advertised at steeper discounts than other online stores make up for it by charging way more than normal for shipping and handling.

Be careful what you agree to: Check to make sure you know how long the item will take to be shipped, and that you understand the store’s return policies. Also, keep an eye out for hidden surcharges, and be wary of blithely clicking “ok” during the checkout process.

-DON’T TAKE THE BAIT

Be on guard against phishing and malware schemes that take advantage of shopper distraction and frenzy during the holidays. In years past we’ve seen both leverage emails crafted to look like they were sent from a name-brand store claiming that there was a problem with your order or some component of the shipping process.

One perennial phishing and malware scam that seems to kick into high gear around the holidays is spam that purports to have been sent by the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx, UPS or some other shipping service, warning of a wayward package.

When in doubt about such a message, visit the e-commerce or shipping site directly, and avoid clicking on links or attachments in email — particularly missives that warn of some dire consequences unless you act quickly. Phishers and malware purveyors typically seize upon some kind of emergency to create a false alarm that often causes recipients to temporarily let their guard down.

-SCOUR YOUR STATEMENTS

Some credit card companies offer cardholders that ability to use “virtual credit cards” — apps that generate a unique, ephemeral credit card number that is good for just one purchase or for a short period of time. The idea being that if fraudsters compromise the virtual card number, your bank doesn’t have to issue you a new card and you won’t have the headache that comes with entering new card details at all of the sites where you’ve set up automatic monthly payments.

These virtual cards are nice in theory, but I’ve never been a big fan. Probably because in many cases they require users to have risky add-ons installed and enabled — like Java or Flash Player. But, hey, if this works for you, great.

Most importantly, keep a close eye on your monthly statements. If I were a fraudster, I’d most definitely wait until the holidays to cram through a bunch of unauthorized charges on stolen cards, so that the bogus purchases would get buried amid a flurry of other legitimate transactions. That’s why it’s key to closely review your credit card bill and to quickly dispute any charges you didn’t authorize.

-BUDDY UP

If you’re planning to spend time with friends and family this holiday season, consider giving the gift of your time and helping out with a security checkup. This might involve making sure that new or old PC has up-to-date security software and the requisite software patches, or locking down their wireless router by enabling security features and disabling risky ones.

If you’re visiting parents or older relatives, consider helping them plant their flags at various online sites and services if they haven’t already done so, such as at the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Postal Service, or their wireless phone provider and/or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

You’d definitely make it off of Santa’s naughty list if you helped your loved ones take stock of which online accounts could benefit from more robust multi-factor authentication — and perhaps even guiding them away from SMS/text messages for multifactor toward more secure app- or key-based options, where available. You might even take a minute to explain the perils of re-using passwords across multiple sites, and see if they’re interested in using a password manager.

While you’re at it, ask your friends and family if they’ve frozen their credit files at the major consumer credit bureaus.
