*For the children of Gaza, Death*
Depicted above is a Palestinian mother mourning her child. She’s kneeling in front of death in a field of poppies, a symbol of mourning. There are 130 flowers, each one represents 100 children that have died in recent months in the Gaza strip (as reported by the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees as of 31 March 2024). I made this illustration based off of ‘Death’ by Janis Rozentals, 1897.
I drew this to give space for some of the sad and empty emotions I’ve been feeling around any news to come from the Middle East, I pray it can offer you the same.

Why is it that black or dark colors represents death and white represents life? I feel like it should be the opposite but I have only seen it portrayed like that by Janis Rozentals

Since you're still getting fucking c*tboy Vlad anons I have a cleanser here:
Tell us some stuff about neph! Do you pull inspiration from anywhere for her? Does she have a favorite color? Is there a song you associate with her at all? What sort of hobbies does she have?
Actually, a lot of inspiration for Nephthys comes from this painting:
It's by an artist called Janis Rozentals. You've kind of got a gentler scene here than usual with paintings of death, and you can see her holding a small sickle and wearing robes.
I also wanted her to have old roots, so I looked up Egyptian goddesses used in funeral rites. Isis was sort of an option, but there would have been some negative connotations there with ISIS, and Isis is associated with light a lot, so I wanted something darker. Nephthys has a very similar position to Isis in Egyptian funeral rites, and there were some other things about her description that meshed for me, so I picked her name to use.
It was also important to me that she have powers beyond just death, because not all of the ghosts are Dead, so she became Master of Change and Transition, and stuff like that. Because what is Death but a kind of Change?
I also stole a bunch of character beats from Death of the Endless, from the Sandman (don't sue me Neil Gaiman) because I like her.
Nephthys' hobbies include gardening, breaking stuff, tricking Clockwork into dumb bets, and causing chaos for fun.
