10 Best Punk Movies & How to Stream Them

We're not talking about Dirty Harry's idea of a punk. Obviously. We're talking about good ole punk rock. And before you scan the list and freak out because you don't see The Decline of Western Civilization or American Hardcore or A Band Called Death, relax — we're also only talking about scripted films. No documentaries were considered (or harmed) during the making of this list of the best punk movies ever made.

We used 3 criteria when watching these films (and many others) in order to arrive at our best punk movies list.

Punk characters should be portrayed in a genuine light, rather than as a caricature (see the Dishonorable Mentions section below for more on this).

How much the punk ethos is a factor in the film's story.

How good (and enjoyable) the movie is.

But, you may ask, isn't the idea of "best movie" or "most punk" antithetical to the essence of punk? That's beyond the scope of this post and also — don't be that guy. So without further ado...

Our picks for the 10 best punk movies in history

#10: Smithereens (1982)

Watching this in retrospect, this feels like the rough draft of filmmaker Susan Seidelman next film, the much more successfulDesperately Seeking Susan, which starred an up-and-coming star by the name of Madonna.

This is actually more post-punk or new wave than punk, but it co-stars Richard Hell, so it deserves a place on this list. The low budget film has its lovers and haters, so it's definitely not for everyone. But if you like Clerks and have a soft spot for pre-gentrified Greenwich Village, this is the film for you.

#9: Green Room (2016)

A struggling punk band plays a last-minute gig at warehouse in the woods. It's an A24 film, so obviously things go wrong... and get bloody.

While it's really more of a horror/thriller film rather than a movie about punk, the plot hinges on the eternal conflict between punks and Nazi skins. There are plenty of "legit" punk references, like Fugazi and GBH stickers, a Minor Threat t-shirt, and most importantly, the band decides to play a certain Dead Kennedys song to a room full of red laces.

#8: We Are the Best! (Vi ar bast!) (2013)

Sweden circa 1985, three middle-class junior high school girls in Stockholm start a punk band. They're the most entertaining and outspoken fictional all-girl punk trio since The Stains, and like The Stains, they can't play. (Well, one of them can.)

They reflect on that age-old important question — What is punk? — with bassist Klara lamenting at one point that her older brother no longer listens to punk, but listens to Joy Division!

While the Swedish coming-of-age film offers a taste of early Swedish punk, it's really a heartwarming tribute to adolescent angst and female friendships. The 3 outcasts deal with bullies, boys, religion, and divorce, while lyricizing about everything from politics to nuclear radiation.

Anyone who ever picked up an instrument in their youth to make noise with friends will probably see a lot of themselves in this film.

#7: SLC Punk (1998)

Two anarcho-punks hang out and question life in Salt Lake City in 1985 — which appears to be a popular year for punk movies to be set in. An kicking off with The Exploited's Sex and Violence for the opening credits is as good a way to start as any.

The film, while a comedy, focuses on the true meaning of the punk subculture and ethos more than other movies on this list. It's not the tightest screenplay ever brought to the big screen, but Sid couldn't play bass worth a damn, and he became an icon.

Besides, SLC Punk is worth watching just for the scene with 2 affluent parents giving a pep talk to their purple-mohawked son.

#6: Bomb City (2017)

Based on the true story of punk promoter Brian Deneke, this 2017 crime-thriller won over a dozen awards at film festivals.

In a punks vs. jocks story straight out of a Dead Kennedys lyrics sheet, it follows the days leading up to the horrifying murder 20 years before the film. It's one of those films where it's better to not to know much about it before watching, but even if you know the real story, it's one to watch.

#5: Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains (1982)

Newly formed all-girl punk band The Stains may have only had 3 practices, but that doesn't stop them from landing a gig as the opening act for touring British punk band The Looters.

Starring a 15-year-old Diane Lane (and 13-year-old Laura Dern), the satirical rebuke of media sensationalism and commercialism is as relevant today as it was 40+ years ago.

The bands on the soundtrack are all fictional, but band The Looters consists of punk royalty Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and Paul Simonon and actor Ray Winstone.

Where to stream it: It's not on any streaming services, but it's available for rent at the usual suspects like Amazon, Apple TV, and Vudu. Microsoft currently seems to be the cheapest option by a buck.

#4: Sid and Nancy (1986)

If punk didn't hate the monarchy, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen would be its king and queen.

A twentysomething Gary Oldman essentially was Sid Vicious for countless 80s suburban punks and Chloe Webb won awards for her portrayal of the perennially troubled Nancy. Courtney Love, whose own life would eerily imitate art a few years later, has a small role in the film.

Former Pistols frontman John Lydon (née Rotten) criticized Alex Cox's follow-up to Repo Man for its inaccuracies, but what biopic doesn't suffer (or benefit) from artistic license?

#3: Hard Core Logo (1996)

Bruce Macdonald's masterpiece gets the bronze medal on our list of punk movies. The Canadian mockumentary follows punk band Hard Core Logo on a final reunion tour across Western Canada. As egos bulge and tensions mount, frontman Joe Dick does everything in his power to hold the band together and make it through the tour.

Punk cameos include Joey Shithead, Joey Ramone, and Art Bergman as themselves. And punky Canadian alt rockers Billy Talent named themselves after the Hard Core Logo guitarist.

Often referred to as punk's Spinal Tap, the film is far from being derivative, and Hard Core Logo is must-see viewing for any self-respecting punk.

#2: Repo Man (1984)

Two years before Sid and Nancy, recent UCLA grad Alex Cox wrote and made his directorial debut, which (IMO) is the best film of his career. Emilio Estevez stars as an L.A. punk who gets a job repossessing cars with Harry Dean Stanton. And chasing down a '64 Chevy Malibu that might be connected to E.T.

The film initially had a rather brief cinema run. But thanks to the killer soundtrack, it crawled back into theaters and pulled in almost $4 million at the box office, on its way to becoming a cult classic and must-see film. And #2 on our list of the best punk movies.

Where to stream it: Incredibly, Repo Man is not streaming anywhere. But it's available to rent almost everywhere, including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and Vudu.

#1: Suburbia (1984)

Penelope Spheeris, whose The Decline of Western Civilization is the definitive American punk documentary, was also at the helm of the definitive 80s punk movie.

Produced by Roger Corman, the coming-of-age film revolves around suburban punk squatters and the L.A. punk scene of the early 80s. Spheeris chose to have street kids (rather than actors) play most rolls, and one of the punks is a young Flea, before he joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The film includes live performances by D.I., T.S.O.L., and The Vandals. Read more about the movie in this Georgia Straight interview with Spheeris from 2018 to further understand why this is our pick to top the best punk movies ever made.

Dishonorable Mentions

Our list of the best punk movies doesn't include 2 movies that commonly come up in the conversation. And that's because they don't meet our first criterion. But if you're looking for movies centered around campy Hollywood versions of punks, check out Class of 1984 (released in 1982) and The Return of the Living Dead (1985).

Class of 1984 stars Perry King from 80s detective show Riptide and the original Melrose Place, as well as Roddy McDowall, Canada's "King of Kensington" Al Waxman, and a pre-Family Ties Michael J. Fox. Filmed in Toronto, the highlight is a cameo performance by local Canadian punk legends, Teenage Head. The film's non-punk theme song, I Am the Future, is by a very non-punk Alice Cooper.

The Return of the Living Dead follows the formula of most of the films in the franchise genre, but this time the group of humans frantically trying to save their brains from being devoured are, you guessed it, punkers.

Predictability aside, it's one of the best in the series and a personal zombie flick favorite. It even did alright at the box office, bringing in $14 million on a $4 million budget. Roger Ebert even gave it 3 out of 4 stars. Soundtrack highlights include tracks by The Cramps, TSOL, The F.U.'s and The Damned.

Which streaming service is the most punk?

Based on the number of movies from our list of best punk movies, with its historically edgy HBO library, Max is the most punk streaming service out there. Obviously being owned by megacorporation Warner Bros. Discovery takes a bite out of its punk cred, but we live in a world where punk rock stars are worth $100 million.

Was Crass right when they declared Punk is Dead all the way back in 1978, or do you side with The Exploited and agree that Punks Not Dead? Either way, it's hard to argue with Jello in those opening lines of Chickenshit Conformist...

My work for NaNoWriMo "All Words Are Words" City of Progress challange.

Set in the Shimmer-ravaged cities of Zaun and Piltover, Dishonored follows the story of Vi, the last bodyguard to Councilor Cassandra Kiramman. Framed for her murder and the abduction of her daughter Caitlyn, Vi is falsely imprisoned by Piltover's Royal Spymaster and usurper, Silco.

Six months later, just days before her execution, Vi escapes confinement with the help of a shadowy group of loyalists who seek to eliminate those involved in the assassination of the Councilor and restore the legitimate government to the Twin Cities. She is further assisted by an enigmatic being called the Outsider, who grants her supernatural abilities for reasons equally mysterious.

Vi takes on the role of a feared and infamous shadow as she pursues members of the coup one by one - but whether she is out for justice or revenge is another question.

in tywin’s intro scene with tyrion he says jaime would have never submitted to capture by a woman. but a few chapters later, jaime is defeated, not by a woman but her teenage son, but it’s cat, the very same woman who captured tyrion, that he chose to offer his (already lost) sword to. and after she frees him he spends time with another female captor, brienne, who he couldn’t beat in a swordfight.

after he was captured by catelyn tyrion had no doubt that jaime would work to rescue him, whether leading an army against riverrun or winterfell or answering a call to the eyrie to fight as tyrion’s champion in trial by combat. jaime did rush into action trying to kill ned in the street, until ned pointed out how stupid that would be while cat held tyrion, so jaime had ned’s men killed instead, a rather pointless gesture. tyrion’s own efforts to free jaime from stark-tully captivity were more clever yet also still dishonorable as he sent false envoys to kill edmure’s guards and try to sneak jaime out of riverrun.

both men tried to save their female captors against their own expectations, after first thinking screw her. later jaime remarks (about sansa) that tyrion “gets these fits of gallantry from time to time”, while speaking to brienne, who reawakened his own sense of chivalry.

Catelyn Stark was trapped against the stone face of the mountain with three men around her, one still mounted and the other two on foot. She had a dagger clutched awkwardly in her maimed hands, but her back was to the rock now and they had penned her on three sides. Let them have the bench, Tyrion thought, and welcome to her, yet somehow he was moving. He caught the first man in the back of the knee before they even knew he was there, and the heavy axehead split flesh and bone like rotten wood. -Tyrion IV, aGoT

When Jaime looked up, Brienne was lumbering along the clifftop, well ahead of them, having cut across a finger of land while they were following the bend in the river. She threw herself off the rock, and looked almost graceful as she folded into a dive. It would have been ungracious to hope that she would smash her head on a stone. Ser Cleos turned the skiff toward her. Thankfully, Jaime still had his oar. One good swing when she comes paddling up and I'll be free of her.

Instead he found himself stretching the oar out over the water. Brienne grabbed hold, and Jaime pulled her in.

Stupid stubborn brave bench. She was going to get herself good and killed, he knew it. And what do I care if she does? If she hadn't been so pigheaded, I'd still have a hand. [...] He shouted, "SAPPHIRES," as loudly as he could.

The lie spared you awhile, wench. Be grateful for that much. "If her maidenhead's as hard as the rest of her, the goat will break his cock off trying to get in," he jested. Brienne was tough enough to survive a few rapes, Jaime judged, though if she resisted too vigorously Vargo Hoat might start lopping off her hands and feet. And if he does, why should I care? I might still have a hand if she had let me have my cousin's sword without getting stupid.

both men had complicated relationships with catelyn stark and tried to save/protect her daughter sansa. each feeling a debt to sansa through tyrion’s marriage vows and jaime’s vows to cat.

when tyrion and tywin reunite again in king’s landing, tywin blames him for his injury saying jaime wouldn’t remove his helmet during battle. once again, he did not quite know what he was talking about.

Even at a distance, Ser Jaime Lannister was unmistakable. The moonlight had silvered his armor and the gold of his hair, and turned his crimson cloak to black. He was not wearing a helm. -Catelyn X, aGoT

before his first battle tyrion wonders if jaime ever contemplates death. and in his second, where he chose to lead a charge, he found himself drunk on battle fever, experiencing feelings he’d learned of from jaime, which he’d never expected to know for himself. after jaime’s maiming, as he does think of death, he also thinks he understands what tyrion feels like being laughed at for his physical struggles, an experience he probably never thought to know for himself either.

both men had adventurous roadtrips starting as captives which involved revealing a tragic backstory to a close companion once they were no longer captives. tyrion told bronn about tysha as they traveled back through the vale and jaime told brienne the full truth about his kingslaying as they shared a bath at harrenhal.

both men inherited honking madonna/whore complexes from tywin which flipped a switch for them when they felt betrayed by their idealized love interests. tyrion’s lover actually was a prostitute but finding her in his father’s bed was the breaking point for him, leading to a murderous rage against tywin which shae was bound up in. his relationship with shae was more a mental roleplay of what he’d lost with his more innocent first wife, tysha, and after learning the truth about his first love (who was a virgin when they met), tyrion spends the next book obsessing about her and tywin’s last words calling her a whore. likewise, after jaime learns of cersei’s infidelity he spends the next book obsessing about it, thinking of her as a whore, and at one point dreaming of finding her fucking moon boy and smashing her teeth.

"[...] Are you a maiden, Shae?"

"If it please you, m'lord," she said demurely.

"What would please me would be the truth of you, girl."

"Aye, but that will cost you double."

Tyrion decided they would get along splendidly. -Tyrion VIII, aGoT

both men had a problem with marital rape though they would not think of it as such. tyrion refused to consummate his marriage to sansa on account of her age and unwillingness, neither one of them wanting the marriage, though i don’t think it would have occurred to either of them to think of potential sex as rape instead of an unpleasant duty. jaime actually thinks the marriage should make tyrion happy when he hears of it, not taking sansa’s side into account at all, which tells me he also wouldn’t think of consent automatically overriding duty as we would. however, a woman in physical pain, being attacked during sex, was wrong to him even though the attacker was her husband, the king himself. (i think it’s important to note that it’s unlikely either brother knew their sister was also abused, as one of jaime’s first lines is asking cersei at winterfell whose fault it was that robert didn’t care for her, and cersei thinks of hiding her bruises from him.)

both men aspired to do justice while representing the throne, though imo it doesn’t exactly work out that way in either case.

"So what will you do, m'lord, now that you're the Hand of the King?" Shae asked him as he cupped that warm sweet flesh.

"Something Cersei will never expect," Tyrion murmured softly against her slender neck. "I'll do . . . justice." -Tyrion I, aCoK

[...]some outlaws had taken shelter in the root cellar beneath the second brother's keep. One of them wore the ruins of a crimson cloak, but Jaime hanged him with the rest. It felt good. This was justice. Make a habit of it, Lannister, and one day men might call you Goldenhand after all. Goldenhand the Just. -Jaime III, aFfC

most of my tyrion/jaime feelings come from tyrion’s pov, but one of my fave moments is when jaime first feels bad about hassling brienne because she reminds him of tyrion, which he finds “queer”. but he’s right to sense the similarity because the big warrior woman and his dwarf little brother are both outcasts because of their bodies and their inability to live up to rigid gender roles. this is one of our first hints of jaime’s better nature in his own pov and could be the first time in years he developed sympathy for a non-family member, but it’s still related to his compassion for tyrion, already known from tyrion’s pov.

jaime’s other sign of respect for tyrion is trying to think more like him to solve problems once he’s lost his swordhand. he’s probably never gotten the full my mind is my weapon speech from his brother but he recognizes it as such regardless, which means he knows how smart tyrion is and that violence is not the only valuable tool. even before the maiming, in his first chapter, with two hands in chains and no sword, jaime wished to think more like tyrion. earlier, tyrion had wished he could be like jaime when he felt threatened after cersei captured alayaya, which leads me to my last point...

The prospect of returning to his cell did not appeal to Jaime. Tyrion could think of something clever now, but all that occurs to me is to go at them with a sword.

Once Jaime might have countered with a smile and a threat, but onehanded cripples do not inspire much fear. He wondered what his brother would do. Tyrion would find a way. -Jaime I & VI, aSoS

What would Jaime do in my place? Kill the bench, most likely, and worry about the consequences afterward. But Tyrion did not have a golden sword, nor the skill to wield one. He loved his brother's reckless wrath, but it was their lord father he must try and emulate. -Tyrion XII, aCoK

the other time i think of jaime imitating tyrion is when he’s trying to prove which of them is tywin’s true heir, but doing so in a way which tyrion had already done. jaime brought a “peaceful” end to the 2nd siege of riverrun by forcing edmure’s surrender through a horrific threat to edmure’s (future) child, just as tyrion tried to keep alayaya safe through horrific threats about tommen, (his sister/enemy) cersei’s child. both think of tywin when making their threats but i’d say they’re acting like each other more than tywin because of the conflict they feel. both of them feel they were forced into making such threats and however satisfied they felt about inspiring fear and using simple words instead of bloodshed, they didn’t want to do either in the first place, didn’t want to play the part of a villain. tyrion was trying to protect alayaya the only way he could by using cersei’s unfounded suspicions about him hurting kin against her. he felt sick when he found out yaya had been whipped because he never thought of actually retaliating with tommen, which left him relieved to learn tommen was already back with cersei and it was tywin who had alayaya whipped. jaime was desperate to avoid storming riverrun in part to avoid breaking his word to catelyn about never harming her family again, keeping to the letter of his vows if not the spirit, and was otherwise trying to be more goldenhand the just rather than the kingslayer on his second riverlands campaign. the only real commonality with tywin in all this is the satisfaction of successful use of fear as a tool. but tywin would feel no qualms about doing so, no discomfort at being “made” to say the words, no offense at people he threatened hating and fearing him, and if he wanted to he likely could order his threats carried out as easily as he made them. (with the exception of his threat to hang shae, which he obviously did not keep.)

The night coolness spread through Virgil like a sickness. It was unforgiving, toxic, seeped with the memories of the evening that curled through his stomach in dark tendrils. Below his bare feet, the sidewalk burned in the way that only ice does, small pebbles digging into his soles. He would do anything for socks. God, why hadn’t he grabbed socks?

Probably for the same reason he hadn’t grabbed shoes.

Please pick up, please pick up, c’mon, pick up already!

His eyes hurt. They already burned with unshed tears that he’d still been too scared to release, and the cool air didn’t help. Crying on the street was a vulnerability he wasn’t ready to face. His lungs burned. He’d been sprinting non-stop for who knows how long. His own panicked gulps for air and the all-too-loud hum of a blinking streetlight were the only sound on the silent street. Virgil had been watching the moths swarm at the fixture for who knows how long, finding odd solace in the fact that at least there was still some life in the darkness. They were still alive, untouched, same as they were yesterday and probably the same as they would be tomorrow, unfazed by the complete turmoil his life had become. And that was somewhat comforting.

“Virgie, you okay? It’s almost midnight!”

Thank fucking god. He opened his mouth to speak, to explain to Remus what had happened. Obviously, Remus would care. That wasn’t a doubt in his mind; that was the only reason he wasn’t anxious as all fuck right now… about the call, that is. He was anxious about approximately everything else. But as soon as the first noise made its way past his lips, the first utterance of a plea for help, everything that he’d been holding back burst forth like a broken dam. He clamped his hand over his mouth, trying to muffle the loud sobbing that he suddenly couldn’t contain.

“Shit. Virgil, what happened? I’m coming over. Are you at home?”

That’s the issue. “No,” he gasped, mildly surprised he hadn’t crushed the phone with the way his grip tightened, “I got kicked out.”

“What the fuck?!”

Virgil flinched. “Can… can you come p-pick me up? I’m at the corner of Jackson and Pullard. Please, please, come get me…”

“Yes. Absolutely. I’m on my way. Stay there, okay?”

Virgil hung up reluctantly after agreeing, not wanting his boyfriend to drive while on the phone, even if Remus gladly would have done it. In fact, he’d used to do it all the time; text, eat, do his makeup, all while cruising down the freeway. He’d only put a stop to it when he saw how much it affected Virgil.

He counted down the minutes on his phone, always having been nitpicky with times, knowing that it shouldn’t take Remus more than ten minutes to get there. If he remembered correctly where he was at the moment, that is. Remus had gotten kicked out of his parents’ house in his senior year of high school after a bad fight. They’d never really been great parents, always showing favoritism towards his brother (amongst other things), and he was more than willing to leave. Virgil had tried to beg his parents to let Remus stay with them, but they’d downright refused, calling him a bad influence and a string of other insults that Virgil didn’t even like to think about. God forbid what would happen if they found out the two were dating.

…Well, they did now. And God hadn’t exactly forbidden what they’d done.

But Remus hadn’t had a solid place to live since it had happened almost a year ago. He couch surfed for a while, bouncing between some old friends who had now gone off to college, or just lived in his car. He’d made it work, and had claimed to Virgil that he actually didn’t mind it that much. If he was telling the truth, Virgil wasn’t sure. He’d saved up some money and bought an inflatable mattress that filled up his back seat area, and Virgil was able to give him his family’s old camping stove by convincing them they lost it. It’s not like they’d gone camping since he was a kid, anyways. Last he’d checked, Janus was home for break and Remus was staying with him for the two weeks he was in town, but those two weeks were probably pretty close to done. Unfortunately, Virgil and Janus had never gotten along, so Remus didn’t bring him up. It was a mutual understanding.

As soon as Remus’ car pulled up to the curb, ten minutes on the dot, Virgil basically flung himself into the passenger seat. The car was warm, so so warm, he almost cried again, this time in relief. Remus pulled back onto the road as soon as he was buckled on.

“Vee, what happened?” It wasn’t hard to guess, there were only so many reasons his parents would have to kick him out. He’d narrowed it down to his parent’s finally having it with Virgil’s tattoo artist dream, or… well…

“Someone at my mom’s work found my Instagram. She went up to my mom, basically started gushing about ‘how handsome I was with my boyfriend’. Specifically the picture of us at Pride from a couple years ago.”

“Ah.” Remus knew the picture well. He’d printed it out and it was pinned to the inside of his sun visor.

“Yeah. Mom called my dad, they were both waiting when I got home. Had screenshots and everything. They grilled me about ‘dishonoring God’ and ‘throwing away my life’. Said I was gonna get AIDS. Die before twenty five. Ya know. The whole lecture.”

Remus didn’t. Surprisingly, him being gay was not a concern of his parent’s. His brother was gay too, and they didn’t give a rat’s ass about that. He nodded along anyways.

“They went on for so long. It was insane. Then they dropped the whole ‘you’re not our son’ thing-” Virgil’s voice cracked, but he swallowed around the lump in his throat and continued, “I figured this is where it was leading to, them kicking me out? I thought they’d give me time to pack, though. Except my dad started getting physical-”

“HE WHAT?!” Remus was tempted to turn the fucking car around and drive to Virgil’s house, just to give his parents a piece of his mind. He was fuming; fuck, he hadn’t been this mad in a while.

“Relax, Rem. I got out before he could actually land a hit. That’s why I don’t have anything with me. I had to run.”

“Doesn’t make it any better.”

“I know.” Virgil pulled his feet up onto the seat cross legged, trying to rub some feeling back into them. Luckily, they weren’t bleeding, just cold as hell. That was one less thing to worry about. “Thanks for picking me up.”

“Of course, Vi,” Remus’ voice had taken on a softer edge that he rarely allowed anyone to see, and he reached over to take one of Virgil’s hands into his own, “Speaking of which, why were you on Jackson? That’s, what, three miles away from your house?”

“When I say I ran, I mean literally. I was scared they would follow me.” Virgil shrugged, as if the statement wasn’t the most heartbreaking thing Remus had ever heard. “I wasn’t thinking clearly, I just ran. That’s why it took me so long to realize I should call you.”

Remus sighed, letting his thumb run against Virgil’s knuckles. “You don’t have to act all brave, Vi.”

“I don’t think I ever saw you cry when you got kicked out.”

“That’s because I didn’t love my parents. I honestly didn’t. I know your parents mean a lot to you. And I’m sorry it went down like it did.”

It was the truth, but he honestly didn’t want to think about it right now. What kind of loving family kicks out their child? Virgil took a shaky breath in and mumbled, “Can we talk about it tomorrow?”

“Okay. Let’s talk about something else. What’s our plan?”

Virgil was quiet for a long moment, as if deep in thought. He watched the scenery fade from his suburban area of town to the darker, rural parts of the town’s edge, not knowing or caring where they were driving. The escape from street lights was nice. “Why do we need a plan?”

Remus’ eyebrows shot up at the sudden playful tone in Virgil’s words. “Oh?”

“I mean, is anything really holding us here?”

“My, my,” Remus crooned, pulling into an empty lot and parking in the furthest spot from the street, “I thought I was the impulsive one.”

“I’m serious, Rem!” Virgil laughed, swatting lightly at Remus’ hand. The happy sound was like music to his ears. “I’m dead serious! What’s keeping us here?”

“Patton? Logan?”

“Both across the country. And you know they’re considering staying there when they graduate.” Janus’ name was an understood thing. They both knew his school was barely an hour from the other two. Even if Virgil couldn’t stand the guy, he knew that Remus and Janus went far back. Judging by Remus’ slowly brightening expression, he could assume that Janus would probably be down to stay there as well.

“Work?”

“I work at Walmart. They won’t miss me. Try again.”

Remus scrunched his eyebrows almost thoughtfully, even though this was maybe the easiest decision he’d ever had to make. Plus, they both knew Remus didn’t really ‘think’ in general. “It almost sounds like you want to take a roadtrip, my little emo.”

Virgil scrunched his nose at the nickname, but let a wider smile spread across his tear stained cheeks. “I kind of do.”

Remus shut the car off, turning to his boyfriend with a shit eating grin. “I like this new side of you.”

“Well…” Virgil’s voice turned sheepish under the almost cheshire cat level expression, “Should we?”

“Let’s make up our minds tomorrow.” Remus stated, gesturing to the mattress behind him, “Sleep for tonight. You must be exhausted, coming up with ideas like this.”

Virgil grumbled under his breath, something about ‘not being a baby’, but clambered into the backseat after Remus, double checking the locks on the doors as he went. The air mattress was comfier than he thought it would be, and it was only made better when Remus pulled him in like a teddy bear, tugging a blanket over them. They both sighed in contentment, then promptly burst out laughing at the synchronicity.

“Oh my god, what have we become?” Remus gasped, pulling Virgil in closer nonetheless. Virgil snorted in response, looking up to meet Remus’ eyes through a haze of sudden exhaustion and amusement. The laughter died down slowly as they both gave in to their fatigue, finishing the day with a slow kiss that left them both breathless. Virgil fell asleep with plans forming and circulating through his mind, the rest of the evening almost forgotten.

His parents were at work, and Virgil knew their kitchen window didn’t lock properly, which was what led to him stuffing everything he could into a black duffel bag while Remus kept watch from his car. He wasn’t too concerned about the parents coming home, but it gave him ample time to look over the map he’d bought from the gas station that morning and plan a route. He didn’t want to admit that his leg was shaking from pure excitement. This idea had been somewhere in the back of his mind for a long time, but he knew Virgil valued his relationship with his family and liked being near them, so he never brought it up. Granted, the situation wasn’t great, but he considered this ‘making the best of it’. A twisted paradise.

He barely flinched as his trunk was thrown open and Virgil threw his bag inside before hopping back into his seat.

“Okay, so how about we drive up to Maine, apparently the sea food is legendary! Then we cut back through Ohio. There’s literally nothing in Ohio, but we can cross it off the list at least! And then-”

Virgil laughed, cutting him off, “I thought we weren’t planning!”

“Well, we need at least a rough idea,” Remus said with a pout, “What we do there and how long we stay, that’s up to impulse. I was thinking we should try to get through all the states, wouldn’t that be cool?”

Virgil could only nod, leaning forward to kiss Remus again. “Sounds amazing,” he murmured, so close they were almost touching. They’d talked to Logan and Patton earlier that morning, and they were equally as excited for the two of them. Remus had called Janus while Virgil was packing, quickly explaining the situation (and also why Remus had disappeared in the middle of the night), and Janus supported it. Made sense, since he was almost as impulsive as Remus. Plus, he was going back to school in a couple days, so it didn’t make much of a difference. That said, they still didn’t have a time limit. Their friends were just starting second semester, meaning they could schedule themselves to arrive in California for summer break, or they could spend longer on the road. But schedules are for chumps.

As they rolled out of the quaint neighborhood Virgil had grown up in, Remus reached down and took his hand again. “Say goodbye to white picket fences.” And god, the joyful expression on Virgil’s face was enough to make him melt.

By the time they hit the freeway, they were both nearly shaking with anticipation. Virgil stuck his hands out the sunroof, the wind whipping through his hair, and let out a whoop that was almost contagious. This was the start of something amazing, they both felt it.

Rules/Criteria

- I’m including directly playable characters only (for RPGs and strategy games, I'm only counting the player-character, not party members who can just be commanded in battle; Three Houses’ characters are sort of an exception). Also, the games listed for each are only the games in which the character is playable, but many appear in other games in non-playable, though still important, capacities. Another thing worth noting is that there may well be other queer characters in any of these games that aren’t playable.

- I’m not counting licensed characters (i.e., Deadpool is pan, and has his own game, but it's a licensed property, so I'm not including it. Clementine and Javier are technically an exception, but that’s due to them being original to the games, as far as I know; obviously Ciri is too, but the Witcher games have such a distinct identity I felt it was fine).

- Sections are arranged by degree of canonicity, but within each list, the order of characters is totally arbitrary.

- “In-game” indicates the queerness is expressed within the game itself, rather than by just word of god. “Explicit” is being counted as the queerness being clear and undeniable (word of god counts, so long as the statement is unambiguous).

- As mentioned up top, an * means there's a note below clarifying something about that inclusion or classification.

- “Series” indicates the character in question has appeared in three or more games under the same brand; worth noting is that these may not necessarily be the games in which the character’s queerness is expressed, even implicitly, but rather the games they are directly playable in.

- I'm separating “trans” and “non-binary” for classification purposes, but it goes without saying that non-binary people are fully valid in identifying as trans; in the context of this list, “trans” refers to binary-gendered trans folks.

- While very nearly any character can be headcanoned as bi, pan, or omni, I'm only classifying a character as potentially bi/pan if the game allows for them to romance more than one gender.

- The difference here between “mlm” and “gay or bi/pan” is that I’m using “mlm” for characters’ whose attraction to other men is certain, but whose specific identity is not, and “gay or bi/pan” for characters who can be unambiguously played as one of those specific identities; the same goes for “wlw” vs “lesbian or bi/pan”.

- Emphasis has been given to mainstream/AAA games for two reasons: because these are the games with the most profile and renown (and thus it is most significant for them to feature playable queer characters), and because these are the genres I'm personally most interested in (I'm well aware there are countless visual novels, dating sims, and various less conventional indie games that all have a plethora of queer characters, and those are certainly valued and appreciated, but save for a couple high-profile exceptions and direct requests, I'm not covering those).

- Send me an ask if you want further details on the confirmation/nature of certain characters' queerness (or if I got one wrong in some way).

Notes/Clarifications/Explanations/Disclaimers

0* - That Rivet is canonically a lesbian was confirmed by one of the lead writers who worked on her; that she’s trans is a little more complicated, but still technically explicit. Way back when the second R&C game, Going Commando, came out, it featured a female Lombax (the same species as Ratchet himself) named Angela Cross, who notably lacked a tail. After seeing tons of theorizing and discourse on various forums and fielding tons of questions on the matter, the devs at Insomniac explained it simply as “female Lombaxes don’t have tails.” It was a word-of-god statement on a seemingly-inconsequential matter, but it was also a *whole thing.* Fast-forward twenty years or so, and we’re introduced to Rivet, the first female Lombax we’ve seen since Angela, and she has a tail. Apparently, the same writer who confirmed Rivet is a lesbian wasn’t aware of the tail’s implications, but she’s also not been with Insomniac that long, and welcomes the interpretation. And even besides the fact that trans/non-binary folks are known to have worked heavily on Rivet’s character, and in the wake of the original trailer, some devs engaged with fans in a way that strongly implied Rivet was intended to be trans, there’s also the simple fact that someone at Insomniac would have remembered the whole tail issue from years ago; someone would have known what the presence of a tail implied, and to my knowledge no acknowledgement of the tail is given in-game. Because it waws specifically established years ago that only AMAB Lombaxes have tails, Rivet having one is essentially both explicit and implicit confirmation of her being trans. (Also, this note is labeled as 0 because it was added well after the fact and I was too lazy to go through and change every one of the note numbers.)

1* - The lead writer of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has stated that he headcanons Maya as asexual. This particular phrasing adds a slight degree of uncertainty, but there is writing in the game to support it, and of all the people to have a say in the matter, he would be the one who could confirm Maya's orientation.

2* - Zer0 has been repeatedly stated by Borderlands’s writers, albeit outside the games, to be agender and to use they/them pronouns; in-game, though, Zer0 is consistently referred to as he/him, which the lead writer has confirmed is (or, at least, was, at one point) an error and the fault of himself and the other writers for defaulting to cisnormative pronouns. As far as I’m aware, Borderlands 3 continues to have Zer0 referred to with he/him, while current official material outside the game uses they/them or avoids pronouns. I would argue Zer0 could be interpreted as either a) using they/them pronouns exclusively, but for whatever reason not communicating this to others or correcting others when misgendered, or b) that Zer0 simply uses both they/them and he/him (this is the one I prefer). This isn’t a caveat to the character’s canon queer status, it’s just a note I thought relevant.

3* - Although she is not playable in Tales From the Borderlands, Athena is shown even more explicitly to be a lesbian, and in a relationship with another female character, in that game; however, her attraction to women is still unambiguously, if much less prominently, conveyed in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

4* - The final chapter of Celeste shows that Madeline has two pride flags sitting on her personal desk, a rainbow gay pride flag (which, of course, also serves as a broader, more general queer pride flag) and a trans pride flag (the colors of which also form the palette of the Summit self-acceptance transitional cutscenes). Additionally, the photo of her on her nightstand shows her at a much younger age, with drastically shorter hair and seemingly boyish look, which aligns with canonical images showing her as being flat-chested in earlier pictures and not in later. Combined with the game’s themes of identity and self-acceptance, and the fact that the game’s creator is trans and non-binary, and the composer is trans, and the devs have liked tweets referring to Madeline as canonically trans, it’s more than safe to say that Celeste’s protagonist is a trans woman. EDIT: I forgot to add this to this post, but yeah, it’s long since explicitly confirmed that Madeline is trans.

5* - Alongside [redacted], Undertale's protagonist is only ever referred to with they/them pronouns and gender-neutral nicknames. While [redacted] being non-binary is more concrete (since [redacted]'s own brother, who knew them best of all, only uses they/them in reference to them), the protagonist being non-binary is sometimes considered slightly more contentious, as some interpret the character as simply androgynous and free for the player to project a gender. However, this has never been stated to be Toby Fox's intent, and a close friend of his has stated that the protagonist is, at least, not a girl; beyond this, they/them pronouns are specifically associated with non-binary gender identity, and thus the protagonist as non-binary is not only valid, but the simplest and most plausible explanation. (Also, regarding the names... yes, I know, I'm very aware. But for the sake of anyone who hasn't played Undertale, I'm simply referring to them here as “the protagonist” and [redacted]; for those who haven't played Undertale, if you want to go without spoilers, I cannot stress enough how important it is to not look up anything, especially not the names of these characters, and when you do play it, just name the fallen human Chara).

6* - Kris is, like Undertale’s protagonist, only referred to with they/them pronouns and gender-neutral terms, including by their family, close friends, and teacher. In addition, given that Undertale's protagonist (and, more importantly, [redacted]) is evidently non-binary, it stands to reason that Deltarune's is as well (this isn’t merely banking on an arbitrary pattern; there’s an in-universe plot point that backs this up, but it’s a slight spoiler). However, I would say the exclusive and increasingly-frequent use of they/them is explicit enough on its own, especially paired with Toby Fox casually, but pointedly, correcting the usage of he/him for Kris to they/them during the Fangamer Undertale 6th Anniversary stream.

7.1* - While negotiating with certain Shadows, Ren may be asked what kinds of girls he likes; among the options is “I like men.” This is non-binding and narratively unacknowledged, and the player can never act on the homosexuality this indicates, but it is nonetheless an explicit, in-game indication of same-gender attraction. Additionally, the dialogue throughout the game never forces the player to have Ren indicate heterosexuality, always giving just enough, and just the right, dialogue options as to skirt around expressing attraction to women (and even, now and then, allowing the player to implicitly indicate attraction to men). On top of this, the anime adaptation, Persona 5: The Animation, features an OVA specifically for the events of Valentine's Day within the story, comprised of 11 different scenarios. One of these (and, arguably, the most viably canon, for several reasons) is the scenario where Ren romances no one, and ends up spending the evening with his best friend, Ryuji. While the vanilla game leaves the full details of the evening unspoken (and Persona 5 Royal features an alternate version that plays out differently, albeit with some teasing), the anime reveals that the two decide to hang out in Ren's room all night, leading to them clearly kissing.

7.2* - The above-mentioned scene in the anime confirms both Ren and Ryuji’s same-gender attraction. As mentioned, it is the most viably canon scenario (in both the game and the anime, for numerous reasons), but technically it’s only canon if the player makes it so by choosing to spend Valentine’s Day evening with Ryuji. However, Ryuji’s orientation is unaffected by how Ren is played; even if the scenario where Ryuji kisses Ren doesn’t occur, that he would is still true either way, and so Ryuji is firmly mlm. Additionally, much of the themes and dialogue of his arc fall heavily in-line with this. (Whether he’s gay, bi, pan, or omni is up to interpretation; personally, I hold him to be gay, because if he is actually attracted to women, that means his more... unsavory behavior is genuine and not just the overexaggerated, performative heterosexuality of a closeted gay boy trying to convince everyone, including himself, that he’s totally straight).

8* - Niles’ bisexuality is evident in Fire Emblem: Fates, but, to my understanding, not in Warriors.

9* - These characters technically meet my criteria of being directly playable (in battle, you can directly control them, even run around as them), but I grouped them together so as to not oversell their “playable character” status, since Byleth is still the only real player-character. Pretty much the same applies to the characters from 60 Parsecs!, who I’m mentioning here instead of in their own note because I’m lazy and adding a new note means renumbering all the subsequent notes.

10* - As you can see here, El Bastardo seems to have top surgery scars. I can’t for the life of me find any other mention of discussion of this, let alone confirmation, but fuck it, I’m counting it ‘cause those are clearly top surgery scars and we are hard-up for trans rep in games.

11* - There is a player-determined element to Morgan's queerness, but it’s merely the gender of the character, chosen at the start of the game. Morgan is only queer if the player plays as the female version.

12* - Similar note to Zer0′s: Leo evidently uses both he/him and they/them pronouns, by which I mean that, due to unclear intent and localization complicating things, it’s not totally apparent what Leo’s specific identity is meant to be, beyond having a gender identity that is queer in some way. However, it is fairly clear he is transmasc to some extent, and I believe the most viable interpretation is that he’s, as I’ve listed him, a transmasc non-binary man.

13* - Rolled Out! is a spiritual successor to Super Monkey Ball, and all eight of its main characters (all adorable semi-anthropomorphic animals rolling around in translucent spheres) are non-binary and use they/them pronouns. There are going to be binary-gendered characters who can be unlocked, all of which are going to be trans. This is bold and powerful as all goddamn get out, and god I wish that type of gameplay was appealing to me (it still looks totally great, even if it’s not my genre).

14* - The Dream Daddy protagonist's queerness is labeled as “player-directed” only because the player has the choice of the nature of his queerness; it should be noted, whatever approach the player takes, the protagonist is a man attracted to men.

15* - For those unaware, there is a Key Item in Bloodborne, obtainable only in Pthumeru Ihyll Root Chalice Dungeons, called the Ring of Betrothal. It is functionally useless (though it provides what is, potentially, extremely significant lore), except that it allows the Hunter to propose to Queen Annalise. She will reject the Hunter no matter what, but the option and interaction are the same regardless of the Hunter's gender. Similarly, Elden Ring allows the player to become consort to Ranni. Additionally, Elden Ring also has a fully diegetic means of re-editing one’s character, with all NPCs still regarding your character as the same individual; as such, changing from a female Tarnished to a male one, for instance, means your Tarnished is explicitly a trans man.

16* - FFXIV has no NPC romance options, but players can marry other players, as well as separate and remarry. This isn’t limited by gender. Additionally, players can change their WoL’s gender at any time via a Phial of Phantasia, a diegetic item which allows full re-customization of your character. Like Elden Ring, NPCs will continue to regard and acknowledge your WoL as the same person, regardless of any new gender, making it functionally explicit that your WoL is trans in such a scenario.

17* - Alucard is explicitly bisexual in the (phenomenal) Castlevania animated series on Netflix. However, that series does not share continuity with the games, leaving it unspecified if he is bi in the games as well. That said, there’s no reason to believe he isn’t, and it’s more than viable to interpret that Alucard being bi is the case in all continuities.

18* - League of Legends features a number of skin lines depicting alternate universes, most of which are fully unconnected to the canon. The Pulsefire universe, however, was conceived as an alternate timeline branching from the main continuity (meaning its versions of these characters are, ostensibly, just extensions of the canon versions), and within this universe, it is very overtly implied something non-platonic developed between Ekko and Ezreal. The writer of the story where this occurred then posted a thread about the difficulty of writing overtly queer stories for a global IP, ending it by linking to Ekko and Ezreal’s Pulsefire story and saying “Anyway, completely unrelated, please enjoy this story about Ezreal and Ekko.” He later further hinted at this when teased about the story’s homoromantic tension.

19* - I’ve put this aspect of Chloe’s identity here instead of the Canon section not because I think it’s particularly likely to be non-canon, but because it’s only been indicated through word-of-god (specifically, this interview with Chloe’s VA, Ashly Burch), and it never comes up in the games or comics. I don’t want to give anyone who sees this and hasn’t played LiS false hope that a main character is explicitly genderfluid.

20* - Ike's relationship with Soren is widely interpreted to be romantic. The pair have an emotionally intimate scene together in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn that is officially referred to as “the moment when their two hearts become one,” as well as an ending in the same game that sees the two set off together with the assertion that their only place is beside each other. Beyond that, their bond possesses a repeatedly emphasized and mutual closeness throughout the Radiance duology, which is, for each character, exclusive to the other. Neither character shows any interest in women, and Japanese-only media has (depending on translation) described Ike as either unaware of or actively uninterested in the affections of women, as well as having love for Soren. Despite all this, however, Ike's queerness is not technically explicit. The most overt evidence relies on translating Japanese text in certain ways; within the games, it's up to interpretation, and while the most viable and sensible interpretation is that he's gay and in love with Soren, it's still not entirely concrete. In other words, Ike is evidently gay, and clearly intentionally so, but not indisputably so.

21* - Wolf is very overtly written and designed to fit the traditional Japanese stereotype of gay men, referred to as Hard Gay: a starkly masculine, muscular, showoff-y, domineering, macho figure. That Wolf is a mildly sadistic, eyeliner-wearing, tsundere leatherboy only adds to the heavy gay-coding (his Super Smash Bros. Brawl look must be mentioned for its unbelievably heavy gay-coding). Much of his dialogue, mainly towards Fox and particularly in Star Fox: Assault, is easily read with homoerotic subtext (much moreso in Japanese but to some extent still in the English localization), and to a degree that, combined with how easily recognized his gay-coding is from an Eastern perspective, makes it unlikely the implied queerness is unintentional. In the same vein as Ike, though, clearly intended queerness is not necessarily explicit queerness, and though it's safe to say Wolf is meant to be gay, it can't be said that he's indisputably gay.

22* - Eagle has a plethora of quotes from the games he's playable in that very overtly allude to him being exclusively attracted to men; like Wolf, however, this is almost entirely relegated to his Japanese dialogue, though it is still somewhat true of his lines in English. This, accompanied by his design rather obviously being an homage to bisexual icon Freddie Mercury, clearly indicates that he is intended to be a gay man. Unfortunately, it has never been commented on officially, and is not technically explicit within the games.

23* - While there’s no deliberately official indication of Byleth being non-binary, Three Houses does quite literally refer to them, both in guide/tutorial text and in-universe via actual dialogue, using singular they/them pronouns, and numerous times, no less. Granted, it’s obvious the intent was just to not have to do two voiceover tracks for those scenes for each gendered version of Byleth; but regardless of intent, what that unequivocally conveys (at least in the English version, where singular gender-neutral pronouns carry a different connotation than in Japanese) is that Byleth canonically uses they/them in addition to either he/him or she/her.

24* - Same as with Byleth, and in fact the player’s Glaive is never referred to with binary pronouns; characters refer to the Glaive with they/them exclusively. Again, assuredly just a byproduct of Japanese language having, as I understand, a more well-established/accepted gender-neutral singular pronoun, while in English they/them is used only for cases of not knowing a person’s pronouns or knowing that they do use they/them. Nonetheless, in the English localization, the player’s Glaive explicitly uses they/them.

25* - Once again, both Traveler siblings in Genshin are regularly referred to with they/them, though in this case it’s weirdly even more explicit, since they’re both intermittently referred to with they/them and he/him or she/her, even by each other. While assuredly the same explanation as Byleth and the Glaive, it still reads overtly as Aether and Lumine both using they/them. (Also, this is currently the only Genshin inclusion on this list because good lord I do not feel like writing the detailed explanations needed to make clear the queerness among Genshin’s playable characters. Suffice to say, there are numerous Genshin characters who are queer in a way that’s almost explicit, but still technically implicit; most occupy a kind of grey area where, to see the full picture of their queerness, you have to consider various scenes, plot points, and lines of dialogue in connection with one another, and read into the implications. There are a few, as well, who are actually outright queer, but I’m not including them because with the way characters in Genshin express affection, I really don’t know where to draw the line of “this is explicit, while this is is technically still interpretative.”)

26* - In Specter of Torment, the closest thing to a romantic element present is Specter Knight being, on several occasions, kissed by a druidic skeleton named Gall, who the devs went out of their way, of their own accord, on Twitter to specify is male. Although Specter Knight is reluctant to kiss Gall, his reason seems purely that it’s specifically a Kiss of Death, a lethal magical technique Gall is practicing and intends to use on heroes (when used on Specter Knight, either he or Gall dies, though obviously only temporarily, since they’re both undead). So, while this is kind of a homoromantic interaction, it’s also kind of not. But, Gall being specified as male seems to indicate that the interaction is meant to confirm Specter Knight is gay; otherwise, I can’t think of any reason why Yacht Club would have bothered specifying. So, I’d say it’s likely Specter Knight is intended to be gay, but not concrete.

27* - Alright, here's my one inclusion that really depends on interpretation. I tried to keep everything strictly canon or official, sticking to cases that didn't require much (or, ideally, any) reading into, but this is one that I feel I have to include, even if it's arguably just a headcanon. Slight spoilers for Gravity Rush 2 ahead: Kat and Raven are two halves of the same soul, split before either was born; cosmically speaking, it could be said they're two halves of the same person, but functionally, they're completely different and distinct from each other. Over the course of the Gravity Rush duology, their bond grows as they end up living together, even sleeping in the same bed, and eventually Raven refers to Kat as half of who she is (though, again whether that's a “soulmates” thing or a “two halves of one soul” thing is up to interpretation, as is whether or not there's a difference between those two things). Indisputably, there's strong affection between the pair, and it's wholly viable to interpret them as a romantic couple, at least by the end of Gravity Rush 2. However, it's far from canon or explicit, and fully unknown what was intended. If you ask me, Kat and Raven are a couple of ultra-powerful cosmic wlw magical girl superheroes, but if you're looking for something official, sadly, that's not this.

28* - Shovel Knight features a function for its original/main campaign, Shovel of Hope, called Body Swap, which allows the player to change the sprites and pronouns (independently) of the main cast of characters. As such, both Shovel Knight and Shield Knight, who are lovers, can be the same gender, and Shovel Knight can have a sprite that is gendered one way (masculine or feminine, though both sprites are fairly androgynous) and pronouns of whichever gender you choose (he/him, she/her, or they/them). However, as neat as this is, it is quite evidently not canon (and it is limited to just Shovel of Hope, which is why I didn’t list the absolute myriad of other games Shovel Knight is playable in).

29* - The novelization of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (as well as subsequent AC content, and I believe even outright comments by the devs) confirmed Kassandra to be the canon player-character sibling, so while Alexios can also be played as explicitly queer, his canon orientation is not in the player's hands.

30* - The canon gender option for Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is “Let the Animus Decide.” Simplifying a little, and without going into spoilers, this has Eivor as a woman, which aligns with the prequel comic (there’s no way to explain further without major spoilers; trust me, I’m not erasing any component of the character’s identity). So, like with Alexios, while you can play as a male version of Eivor, he is explicitly not the canon version of the protagonist.

my dishonored self insert in dishonored 2 when he is all grown up :) ive finished dh1 so i have things to say. about that. which have spoilers for dh1 if you are worried about spoilers

FIRST of all in dh1 eric is baby. hes 9. just a little guy. during the events of dh1 he’s an orphan; his mother died of the plague before the game, but prior to that she treated him very cruelly. i think she probably did crimes? he lives around the area of the hounds pit pub and stays there even after the place is cleared out because he’s afraid of the city watch and hides instead of being evacuated. he gets deeply attached to lydia and is completely heartbroken and devastated when havelocke kills her. initially he plans to kill havelocke, but obviously corvo gets to him first, so he never gets the chance. everyone moves on and lydia’s death is never acknowledged again by anyone Important. he’s deep in despair over this and completely radicalized by it (FUCK THE RICH FUCK THE STATE etc), and just a little while before dh2 is when i imagine the outsider gives him his mark. Just To See What He’ll Do, of course. also, completely nothing detail, but i imagine the pair of earrings he’s wearing in the illustration there are lydia’s.

all his powers are based on his upbringing to some extent. he’s spent most of his life during/after the rat plague as a petty thief, and even to some extent before that when living with his mother, so his void abilities are designed to give him a heightened advantage in urban environments, since that’s his “home territory” so to speak, and build on his existing skills vis a vis stealth. he has no real offensive powers to speak of.

SECOND of all, this is a really minor detail, but eric wakefield was originally the rake’s name (since eric is my middle name and i felt it was more appropriate aesthetically for fallen london than using my first name, and i wanted to make up a new surname). in dh1, during the second mission in the brigmore witches dlc, there’s that guy edgar wakefield, who is very much a nothing character. i was like “haha, funny, they both have the same name!” so i passed that name on to dishonored eric here. edgar wakefield is his father - not that edgar really knows or cares, of course, nor that eric really cares either (though he IS aware of his father’s identity and ultimate fate). crime family!

finally, i haven’t really decided märchen’s ultimate role in things yet, other than that i do want him to smooch on dishonored me, obviously. so he will appear, i’m just not sure what to do with him

“How did you meet him?”

“Do you know that one quote from Dostoyevsky that says: We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who interest us at first sight. Somehow suddenly, all at once, before a word has been spoken.”

“Do you like Dostoyevsky?”

“No.” She firmly answered, “He did, though.”

“So, you two were strangers at first who suddenly grew closer?”

“You can say that. Even though he worked with my brother, I had never greeted him before. Their latest heist went wrong, so wrong. My brother died, and he got into jail. I wanted to greet him personally after he was out to get revenge, you know? Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth.”

“You were planning to murder him.”

“Mmm- yes.”

“When did the latest bus pass?” Soonyoung asks while wearing his black leather jacked in the middle of the heat of July, rubs his hands together, takes slow steps to the bus stop before turning back again.

“5 minutes ago.”

“And the next one will come in-?”

“40 minutes.”

Soonyoung signs before placing his sunglasses on his nose bridge, and takes another step towards the bus stop before turning around again just to stare at the place he spent most of his youth into. The world seems too large for the young man as he keeps groaning.

Soonyoung was a restless man. He almost appreciates the person who stopped their car for him. Almost. He sharply groans when he recognizes the woman stepping out of the car. The familiar appearance of the girl looks nothing like the one he saw years ago. The way her expression has no marks of distress and uneasiness makes him feel nauseous.

“What are you doing here?”

Soonyoung knows that he was miserably dishonoring his uncaring aura as he shifts from left to right at where he was standing. His hands became sweaty and unsteady in his pockets, failing himself. His features told a different story, and his hands showed another.

“Every single night when I close my eyes, I see nothing but the two police officers arriving at our house to state that my brother was dead. I acknowledged that everything would go downhill, but I wasn’t foreseeing it to happen this fast. Their son was dead, and their daughter was conceivably a psychopath. All the people I loved and trusted turned their backs to me after that, just like it was my responsibility. You do not understand how it makes your head to be free, but not having anybody.”

He pouted in surprise while nodding, almost as if he was waiting for her to finish and leave, “Nope, I have no fucking idea.”

“I heard you’ve been a very good boy.” Her voice expresses nothing but sarcasm, lips form a smirk, hand raises to remove the hood of her sweatshirt which was closed the whole time, then moves before her eyes to block the steady sunbeams coming to her eyes.

“Yeah, I helped the police in two cases.”

“We’re all falling in line in the end, aren’t we?”

Soonyoung looks at her, tries to read her expression, studies the way her lips curl up on the ends when she smiles, and how her face creases when she fails to block the sunbeams.

“Really, what are you doing here?” Soonyoung asks again, wonder takes over as he glares behind the faint print of his sunglasses.

The girl takes her time glancing at the left and right side of the road, “The bus isn’t coming,” she glimpses back at him, “do you want a ride?”

Soonyoung takes his sunglasses off, and the girl studies the unique frame of his eyes, “To the cemetery.”

“He wanted to visit my brother’s grave. He tried to look undisturbed, but I knew he was. I left him there and returned to work.”

“Then what happened?”

“It didn’t take him a long time for him to locate the place I worked. When he came in, I thought I was seeing things, I used to daydream about him a lot at work, and I’m not talking about pleasing daydreams.”

“So you want us to become a duo? Like Bonnie and Clyde, Thelma and Louise?”

“No, that wouldn’t work out. You and me, as a limited liability company. [y/n] & Soonyoung LLC.”

His words make the girl throw her head back and giggle in doubt, “You’re trying to sacrifice me to protect your own ass as you did to my brother?”

“You’re talking as if you weren’t plotting to kill me for years.”

“You see, I hate you and you hate me. Why are you so sure that I won’t stab you in your sleep?”

“Hate is the greatest motivator.” The girl could picture his half smirk even though she has her back turned against him. He continues while standing up and making her way towards her, “We have another option, we don’t see each other again until we meet on a tour bus for seniors, heading to the beach.”

Edges of the girl’s mouth lifts, it’s crystal clear that his words satisfied her, the thought of replacing her brother giving her stomach slight tingles as she imagines the bad things she always wanted to do in her life but never could, “Okay, let’s do it.”

“And this is how our shared life began as a mismatched twosome who everyone thinks: They’re going to kill each other. With the money we made, we bought our first house, a baby blue caravan. We instantly learned the secret to a good marriage, trusting each other. We weren’t friends, we shared nothing. But as much as we didn’t like it, together we were the best. The perfect couple, precisely because we didn’t love each other. We found the perfect amount of space to not kill each other, neither too close nor too far.”

“You lived like a domestic couple, how come you could undoubtedly trust each other in such a little time.”

“Not a domestic couple, but more like a husband and wife in their eighties who have over 20 grandchildren, but no one visits if that makes sense.”

“Tell me about the things you did respectively, how did you spend your time?”

“We had nothing noteworthy to do, so he bought two chairs and we just sat on the roof of the caravan, on the opposing sides. That was the agreement.”

“And the robberies? How did you follow through with that?”

“We started with big targets, casinos. We would quarrel during the heist and people would just look at us like we’re lunatics.”

“No one move!” Soonyoung raises his voice, puts his hand behind his head, and holds onto his gun smoothly, “Put your hands behind your head like how I’m doing it. I won’t say it again, okay?”

The young boy doesn’t hesitate to wander towards the money source and doesn’t even consider it necessary to turn towards the girl before commanding pointedly, “The cash. I’ll deal with the cashier, you take care of the hags.”

“Excuse me?” The girl’s attitude catches him off guard as he stares at her in uncertainty. He chuckles softly before running his hand through his pitch black hair. “We’re not having this discussion here. Not now.”

“Why? Why do you need to be in charge of the money?” She cocks her head to the side, not bothered by the weirded looks of the people surrounding her. Soonyoung takes a step towards her, eyes and mouth wide open, “Any problems?”

“The problem is you fucking always put yourself above me,” Soonyoung takes another step towards her to hear her better, “shit, are we really going to start our first job together like this?”

Soonyoung gets much closer to her than he was moments ago, uneasy as he keeps peeking towards the woman who’s filling the bag with money, “We’re already splitting it 50/50.”

“It’s not a matter of money, it’s a matter of attitude.” Her look changes as her voice rises, “Either stop looking down on me or this is over.”

Soonyoung tries to change his expression, softens his voice, whisper screaming, “Is this the right place to talk about this?”

The girl walks over to him completely, face inches away from each other, feeling each other’s breaths on their faces. She whispers, “Are we equals? Yes or no.”

“We have to go.”

“I don’t care. Not before we clarify this. Equals or nothing, you decide.”

Soonyoung lowers his gun, steps away from her, spits while gritting his teeth, “Very well, equals. In sickness and in health, till death do us apart, amen.”

She nods, visibly satisfied. Giggles when she catches Soonyoung grumbling about how more effortless it is to work with a man rather than a woman.

“And that’s how we carried out together. It wasn’t the Bonnie and Clyde story you would predict, but days like this made me neglect the murder plots going on in my head. And that baby blue caravan was the closest thing I had that resembled ‘home’ to me, if that makes sense.”

“How would you define ‘home’?”

“Home? I don’t know.”

She gets a decent amount of shampoo in her hands before pressing them to Soonyoung’s airy locks, sudden contact of her hands sends shivers down his spine as he tries to get comfortable in his chair, relaxes his muscles while the girl runs her hands through his dark hair. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”

“Did you knew that hair doesn’t stop growing after you’re dead?”

“And you want your hair to look sleek in the morgue?”

“No, I just want to talk without looking at your face.”

She eases her hand movements as if she waits for him to continue, he goes on, speaking softer than he did before, “I was 12 years old when my mother married to that pig. He brought nothing but misery and discomfort to the only place I knew as ‘home’. My mother neglected me, trying to be a suitable partner for that bastard,” he chuckles hysterically before continuing, “I was 15 years old when they send me to an orphanage, too old for adoption, too rebel for that environment. I fled from there at 18, and that’s when I met your brother, been doing this shit ever since.”

Soonyoung would pity himself sometimes, only life could be a little kinder to him, only if the world would have a little mercy for him, everything could’ve gone differently.

“Soonyoung”

“Mmm.”

“What is it?”

“There’s no need to run if you have a home, and the time we spent in the caravan, in the camper is the closest thing I’ve ever had to a home. I wanted you to know that.”

She lets the teardrop she keeps in her flow on her cheek, her lips curl up, forms a faint smile, “It was special for me too.”

She sniffs, grabs the water from the small bowl and rinses his hair. “Even though, to tell the truth, you’re a shitty roommate.” She grabs the towel and throws it to him, making him giggle like a little kid.

“And you droll in your sleep.” He turns towards her.

“So you watch me while I sleep?”

“No, I don’t watch you, you’re just making weird noises and it draws my attention.”

“Fuck you.” Her face lights up before grabbing the pot full of water and wetting his whole torso, his light colored jeans making the situation already more apparent than it already is. He laughs aloud before grabbing the fountain and pointing it towards her, their laughs brighter than the sun, for the first time after a long time.

"No.”

“No what?”

“I already know what you’re going to ask. Everyone wonders whether Thelma and Louise fucked or not. We did not. We did not fuck.”

“Okay.”

“And also, just clearing it for the record, we weren’t in a relationship either. We didn’t talk about any shit except the heists, that’s it.”

“Okay, good to know.”

The fairy lights inside of the caravan are shining in the colors of the rainbow as the girl sways to the beat of the song playing in the background. The drink in her hand matches the color of her colored sunglasses, giving her a vintage vibe. Soonyoung lies on his back, watching the way her body moves. She notices how his expression seems so cloddish, approaches him so that their noses touch, “Is this your first time?”

“What?” He tries to brush her off, not breaking the eye contact.

“Yes it is,” she laughs breathily, “this is your first time doing ecstasy.”

Soonyoung pushes her away and stands up to sit comfortably, “This isn’t getting me high at all.”

His tone of voice makes the girl giggle, “Right, you’re not high at all.” Her voice carries no expression but lust and sarcasm at the same time.

“At all.” Soonyoung keeps arguing while giggling and shaking his head.

“You don’t feel… Euphoria, empathy? This- sort of- uh- love? For anyone? I thought those were your favorite emotions.” She smiles sheepishly.

“When does this shit end?” He asks, not betraying his uncaring aura even when high.

Her sarcasm slowly drops and she feels alone with nothing but lust in her heart. She looks at him with an innocent expression, reminding him of those kids who want to buy candy in a convenience store, “Do you know what I want to do right now?”

“What?”

She gets closer to his face again, looks directly at his eyes, looks directly at his soul, “I want to touch your face.”

“Jesus, fuck no.” He stands up to go to the table which is decorated with various of liquor and grabs the entire bottle of the alcohol, drinks an enormous amount of it until the girl makes her way towards him again.

She moves her hand towards his face; he flinches when her hand contacts his skin. Her fingertips travel on his nose bridge, his cheekbones, his lips, his jawline. She leaves her fingerprints all over his face gently. Soonyoung chuckles but doesn’t move away, he doesn’t look away either. He enjoys the feeling that comes up to his spine as he keeps touching his face.

The air inside the caravan is thick, but it feels lighted than air for Soonyoung as he feels the butterflies in his stomach gently waking as she travels her fingertips along his sharp features. He pants, he doesn’t know if it’s because of the drug, or her.

“We’re not going to fuck, that’s what we agreed for.” He whispers while looking at her with a blank expression.

“You think I want to fuck with you?” She smiles again, and he nods.

“That makes little sense, does it?” She argues again, still looking at him with the same smile on her face and the same tone of her voice, seductive, “Oh well, let’s go to bed then.” And the first thing Soonyoung does when she turns her back at him to walk towards the bed is to grab her by her hair and pull her back towards his body. She laughs in surprise, her heartbeat rises as he pushes her front towards the wall.

And the rest is just a blur.

The next morning, she wakes up to Soonyoung practicing gunshots. She makes him and herself a cup of tea before making her way towards him. “About last night, that was stupid.”

“Yeah. By the way, I made the plan for the next heist.” He grabs the handle of the cup and responds in a sassy way.

“Well, you can tell me later.”

Soonyoung chuckles.

“Do you have any regrets?”

“Only if I looked back before leaving.”

“No.”

Soonyoung stretches out the beautifully packed gift, catching the attention of the girl who was sitting outside despite the cold air. She looks at him in doubt, “Kwon Soonyoung gives presents? Is that a bomb? Or an internal organ of one of your relatives? Perhaps it’s a scorpion-”

“Fuck, just take it.”

She hesitantly takes the gift and opens it just to find a polaroid camera inside, laughs while opening the box, taking the camera out. “Do you want to take a picture?”

“Yes. So you can remember we were young, we were hot, and we were free, and we felt a little, just a little less lonely together.”

She looks at the camera, and back at him before standing up, “Cool, let’s do it.”

The bright flash of the camera makes Soonyoung’s eyes hurt a little. He turns to her as the film gets released from the machine. He bounces slowly, reminding the girl of a little kid while smiling softly, waiting for the polaroid to darken. She gives the polaroid film to him after looking at it.

“Merry Christmas, asshole.”

“You too, princess.”

“Do you think things have worked out differently?”

“Things should have gone differently. I must have been in Italy or France, not here talking to you.”

“What about him?”

“What about him? Death didn’t intimidate me, nor him. There will still be winters and summers. It’s not like people will stop celebrating Christmas, or a child won’t get a birthday present. The gone is gone, and the world goes on, it’s nothing I can ease. However, he’s not dead.”

“How come?”

“Only those who are forgotten die, I’d like to consider he’ll be living for a long time.”

Too much rambling about au ra characters I’ll probably never play for a possible warring kingdoms AU, put behind a cut because I love you.

I: The Age of Twilight

Approximately four hundred years ago a volcanic eruption in the south seas cast much of the continent of Othard beneath a diffuse cloud of dust and ash. Several years of cold winters and poor crop yields followed, heralding an age of strife and hardship. Previously-peaceful nations and outlying factions began to buckle with unrest, and brushfire conflicts erupted along the various borders of Othard’s polities, threatening to boil over into an open age of war.

In the center of Othard, the reigning king of Doma awoke to find enemies at his every flank. To the south the nations of Dalmasca and Nagxia eyed their fertile farmlands, whilst to the east the piratical Confederacy raided their coastal villages for supplies and foodstuffs, and finally to the north the warlike xaela tribes sought precious iron and animals to slaughter for their meat and bones.

The king was faced with an impossible situation - with men and women already lean and hungry due to the hardness of the earth, his nation lay ripe to be picked apart by the various predators circling in the waters. So he put the question to his loyal lords and retainers: defend Doma on all sides, with one arm behind their backs. In these years, a quartet of warlords would rise to the occasion, their names committed to history as the heroes that shepherded the nation through the years of darkness. For many years afterwards, they would each be celebrated - though in the lands beyond Doma, their names would be whispered as objects of terror.

II: The Warlords of Dusk

Toshitada Koma (top left) became known as the Warlord of Spring, though to his enemies he was known more widely as the Warlord of Cruelty, or more simply as the Ogre. His solution to the king’s proposal was simple - strike fear into the hearts of Doma’s enemies, and make them quake to even consider battle with her armies. He fought his skirmishes with a bloodthirstiness that shocked his foes and left few alive in their wake. He pursued battle aggressively, favoring savage preemptive strikes that forced his opponents onto the back foot, and it was not unknown for enemy soldiers to desert upon finding his banner lifted in opposition. Despite his unimpeachable record, later in life Toshitada was said to have come to regret his reign of cruelty, and abandoned his wealth and holdings to live as a monk, bringing peace and comfort to the victims of war. He is believed to have been slain by the family of a Nagxian village headman he had killed, though the circumstances of his death are murky.

Classes: warrior, dragoon, white mage Goro Kurodajiro (top right) became the Warlord of Summer, known also as the Phantom Lord. He was a less frenetic, more calculating sort of warrior. He had gone blind in one eye early in life under mysterious circumstances, and often wore a patch over the sightless orb. Despite this, he was often said to see things no one else could. A masterful magician, he cast veils of illusion over individuals and armies alike, leading his foes astray so that they would walk into prepared traps or even come to blows with one another. Whatever was left, he would finish off with more direct spells of fire, ice, and thunder, and was said to turn the very land and laws of nature against his enemies. Xaela in particular called him ‘Maker of Webs’ and considered his tactics dishonorable. This would one day prove to be his downfall - as he spun his spells to frustrate an alliance of xaela tribes, a sniper of the Mol loosed an arrow that put out his remaining eye. Blinded, Goro began to lash out in every direction, slaying friend and foe alike in a panicked rage. The xaela warriors weathered the storm, however, and he fell beneath their gathered blades.

Classes: red mage, astrologian

Naotoki Yamanouchi (bottom left) would be known as the Warlord of Autumn, as well as the more sinister title the Demon of Venom. Born with a strange tongue shaped by two points and elongated eyeteeth, it was whispered the man’s lineage was tainted by that of a snake demon. Unsurprisingly, Naotoki’s solution to the king’s question was to make use of all manner of gathered venoms and poisons to level the battlefield against Doma’s foes. His blades coated with toxins, he could blind or incapacitate foes even without touching them as the substances dripped onto exposed flesh. Even far from the battlefield his foes were not safe from his debilitating touch, their very food and drink turned against them. It was said that he possessed the power to cure those he inflicted with his venoms, but if so it was a power he used sparingly, if ever. These heinous tactics would one day backfire, as his cavalier use of such weapons crept into the jungles of southern Dalmasca and attracted the ire of the viera who made their home there. Ambushed and pierced by many arrows, Naotoki’s last act was to throw himself into the Zeirchele River, his tainted blood fouling its waters for years afterwards.

Kuniko Sasaki (bottom right) was the Warlord of Winter, and her defense of Doma was a two-pronged approach. Said to have perfect vision even in total pitch-black, she and her chosen cohort of samurai and shinobi would attack in the dead of night, when the moon lay shadowed, and sow panic and confusion amongst the enemy. For this, she became known to Doma as the Blade of Darkness. However, open battle was of limited effect against foes like the Confederacy, who rode their ships to and fro across the Ruby Sea. Against such foes, Kuniko brokered deals under the table, promising to look the other way while such enemies plundered Doman lands...only for such raids to inevitably run afoul of sudden attacks in the night. For this dishonorable behavior she became known as the Jackal, and even some Domans termed her the Warlord of Corruption. One night her reputation caught up with her, and rather than raid the vulnerable coastal village offered to them, the Confederacy shelled it with unending volleys of catapult and ballista fire. When dawn rose, Kuniko and her cohort had been wiped out.

III: The New Dawn

Doma survived the dark, savage years, and history rolled on for four hundred years. Until there came to Doma a new foe, one clad in steel and bearing weapons never before seen by the ancient nation. The Garlean Empire put the better part of Othard beneath its banner, bringing even Doma to heel. For twenty-five years the Empire’s VI Legion ruled Doma as a vassal state, exploiting its lands, its people, and even its legends.

Forever searching for ways to broaden their scientific understanding - no matter the cost - the scientific contingent that had accompanied the VI Legion carried out unspeakable experimentations on the people put under the rule of the Empire. When they learned of the ancient legends of the Warlords of Dusk, they sought out the ancient graves of the revered warriors and subjected them to the newly-termed process of ‘cloning.’ The intent was to parade Doma’s ancestral heroes before them as loyal servants of the Empire, and to this end they created living, breathing copies of the long-dead quartet.

Unfortunately, the Empire had overlooked a simple truth - great warlords are not wont to bend their knee to foreign rulers. And savage days in savage lands give rise to savage leaders. The quartet threw off the shackles of their captors and slaughtered many of their creators in one terrible blood-soaked night before retreating into the mountains of Othard. Before a response could be organized, the VI Legion was called away by the Emperor, and in the resulting confusion the newly-reborn warlords were overlooked. Soon enough, the Empire as a whole would be thrown out of Doma by the arrival of the Warrior of Light and the restoration of the Rijin line to the throne.

But there was yet unrest in the ancient kingdom. Not all were happy to return to life as it had been twenty-five years ago. Strong currents churned beneath the surface, and among the voices raised in anger echoed those of the distant past, the warlords returned to ancestral holdings and lands, sometimes at the point of a blade. The quartet seemed to have been reborn with much of their old personalities - and, more distressingly, their various abilities - intact. With Doman lands and Doman people depleted by the brutal Garlean rule, a set of warlords with experience from another time when the nation faced lean years would be fearsome foes indeed...

Illya Verses

I. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015) Movie Canon

II. Fifteen Years Later, based off of the 1983 movie stemming from the original TV show. Illya had been dishonorably discharged from service as an agent in the mid 60s, and has been working as a fashion designer since then. Fifteen years later, he is recruited back into service.

III. Post-Movie, Illya is loyal to his UNCLE team, and begins questioning his loyalty to the USSR as he sees their actions. He does not defect, but he begins to stray from his original extreme nationalism.

IV. Young Man: Ranging from age 14 until the movie, this verse covers Illya’s time training in the KGB and various missions of his. (FC Austin Butler)

V. Grand Duchesses’ Right Hand: In a world where the Revolution of 1917 did not occur and Russia remained under the control of the Tsar. Illya’s father was a noble and a primary advisor to Tsar Nicholas. Illya grew up in the palace, born in 1896, grew up beside the royal children and was being groomed to be a bodyguard to the Grand Duchesses. He was the closest to the second Grand Duchess, as she was a year his junior. The young future tsar, Alexei, felt envious of Illya, and after trying to get Illya in trouble, realized it would be better to take note of Illya’s strengths and eventually viewed Illya as a sort of older brother figure despite a lasting feeling of resentment over Illya’s strength and lack of being confined due to illness. Illya was suspicious of Rasputin, but kept quiet about it as it wasn’t his place to vocalize his opinion. He did, however, listen to the complaints of any of the Tsar’s children. After Rasputin’s death, Illya’s father gained even more in station which resulted in Illya being put in line to be the advisor to Alexei, if the young Russian survived to become Tsar after his father. VI. Modern: UNCLE, formed in 1964, is now the international version of the FBI. Illya was trained by the Russian division, still the “best within three years”. Illya was born in 1988, during the end of the USSR. His father was killed during the fall of the USSR, as certain KGB agents were being silenced. As a single mother, Illya’s mother brought Illya to an old government contact of hers when he was eleven. His new guardian saw potential in Illya, resembling his father. After training in the Russian military from ages 18 to 21, Illya studied at Lomonosov Moscow State University. He majored in World Politics and minored in French. After graduating, he was recruited by UNCLE.

VII. The Curse of Immortality/Super Soviet/Marvel Friendly: With the USSR wanting their own version of Captain America - in both the propaganda and the access to a super soldier, Illya was chosen due to his exceptional performance during KGB training. He had been injected with chemicals that didn’t delay his aging but stopped it and accelerated the regeneration of his cells as to allow for rapid healing and increased strength. This was how he was able to do the “barely human” acts in the movie, such as ripping the trunk off of the back of a car. With his delayed aging, Illya had to leave UNCLE after a few decades, becoming a vigilante in Eastern Europe from the 1980s until today. Eventually, while an UNCLE agent, he tracked down the group who tortured him and - in his eyes - cursed him. They were a cult experimenting in black magic, and used Illya as their guinea pig when trying to cause immortality. Before killing the last one of them, Illya obtained the means to cause immortality - enough for two people, as he would offer them to Gaby and Solo if either was near death and the idea of either of them dying is one of Illya’s greatest fears. There is supposedly no way to reverse the immortality, which Illya seeks to remedy by modern times as seeing the world age around him causes a great deal of cognitive dissonance for him. He has a better grasp on his anger now, but certain things/topics still set him off - such as reminders of Solo and Gaby (if they are deceased).

VIII. Private verse with wehavefoundthestars, Second Chances: As a tie into Illya’s immortal verse, soon after the events of the 2015 movie (set in 1963), Illya fell into a coma as his body’s way of balancing out the trauma he sustained and his rapid healing and cell regeneration. It took about twenty years for him to come out of it, waking up with the same age maturity as he had when he fell into the coma. The new head of UNCLE set up a second chance for him, where he would be an American graduate student by the name of Oliver. An entire new identity was created for him, and it was insisted that he take advantage of this second chance. Regardless of this, Illya/Oliver feared forming attachments again due to the fact he’d outlive anyone he got close to.

IX. A Happy Ending: After about five years serving as an UNCLE agent, Illya has gradually worked on addressing his trauma with the assistance of Gaby and Solo. He has “gone soft”, as Solo once teased him about. Reflecting on what he missed growing up, and what his parents had fall apart, he realized he wanted to retire and settle down. Tying into the “fifteen years later” verse, Illya has become involved in fashion design - specifically for women in Berlin, both East and West. Eventually, he realizes he does want a family, that he craves the support and love that is supposed to come with one. While he remains wary of love and trusting someone so much, he accepts that deep down he wants that life. Returning to where he first felt love, Illya now lives in Rome. *Note: this verse can happen with a Gaby, even with her not retiring. I do ship them, and can see them eventually having a real relationship - not just a fake one. She is the first person he ever felt safe with, and also set the standard for anyone he envisions having a relationship with.

X. Hogwarts: In 1943, at age 12, Illya was transferred to Hogwarts from Koldovstoretz rather than any of the wizarding schools in the USSR. Despite both the UK and USSR being involved in WWII, they believed Illya would be safer at Hogwarts and have an advantage due to some of the professors at Hogwarts and the safety measures in place. When placed under the sorting hat, Illya was not given a decisive placement and it was based on his preference. (In a quiz, he got “So you’re 28% Gryffindor, 26% Ravenclaw, 25% Slytherin, and 21% Hufflepuff! You seem to be an almost perfect combination of all four houses, which is incredibly rare - you’re equal in your intelligence, bravery, loyalty and ambition. As we know, though, the Sorting Hat takes your preference into account…so it looks like you get to choose your own house). Based on his knowledge of the four houses, Illya chose Ravenclaw as he wished to focus on improving himself as a wizard rather than focus on social interactions. If he had been in a better mind set with less pressure on himself to become a contributing member to the USSR, he would likely have been sorted into Hufflepuff. He was particularly talented in Regarding his lineage, Illya is believed to be a Pureblood, but it is possibly untrue due to the bias in favor of Purebloods within the USSR and propaganda to only have pure blooded children as to lessen the risk of non-wizards being born. While having missed the Grindlewald disasters, he did encounter Tom Riddle (Riddle having gone to Hogwarts beginning in 1938, being in his fifth year when Illya was sent to Hogwarts). He was not certain what to think of the Slytherin, and simply avoided him - that was how he behaved toward most, so it didn’t seem out of the norm. Upon returning to the USSR, Illya got involved with UNCLE’s wizarding branch and acted as a spy amongst the growing number of wizards practicing illegal dark magic. He worked with drop out Slytherin, Napoleon Solo who had served in WWII’s later years and now for the CIA’s wizarding branch, along with an East Berliner named Gaby Teller who had attended Beauxbatons as an international student (please note that if you are a Solo or Gaby who has different headcanons about their wizarding schooling, I’d be happy to go with yours! I just went with what I thought might have been the situation). As of the war in 1998, Illya’s status is unknown except to Napoleon Solo and Gaby Teller. 1 ) What’s the meaning of your character’s designation? Ifthey named themselves, why did they select that name?

“I was constructed as part of a set that all had electromagnetic radiation-themed names--my siblings were Ultraviolet and Infrared. I was the shortest, so, Gamma Ray. We were originally meant to work on a radiation project, but the funding for it had been scrapped by the time we were taking on our own alt-modes, so we went our separate ways. I’ll admit it stands out in the construction field, but it’s my name, so I kept it.”

2 ) Explore a personal artifact, what does it look like? What’sits history and importance to your character. If they don’t have any personalpossessions, why is that?

“I don’t have many personal possessions. Impractical, really, what with moving around as much as I did during the war, and even before the war, my mate and I lived in a three-room in the lower levels of the Tagon Heights. Didn’t have a whole lot of room for stuff.

“This is an elbow brace my mate retrofitted for me, before the war. The arm that fits under my shovel tends to take a lot of strain, and this keeps it from hyperextending or wrenching. I’ve hung onto it all these years because--well, it’s got his initial and mine, so it’s a piece of him in a way. Even if he didn’t build the whole thing.”

14 ) Are they comfortable with significant alterations beingmade to their body?

“What does significant mean? I’ve had limbs replaced, changed alt-modes, all of that, but it’s always been along the same basic lines. I’d be fine with a repaint, or even a reclass into a different type of heavy equipment. Would I want to be a speedster or a flier? No, and I’d politely refuse offers to turn me into one.

“And of course, all of the above goes out the window if someone’s doing it to me. I’m not okay being altered without my explicit consent, even if it’s something I’d otherwise like.”

16 ) Do they look down on members of the disposable classand beastmodes? Would they admit to it?

“Mech, I was disposable class back in the day, before they reworked the caste signifiers because some noble had a frame that was a little too heavy to be strictly high-level. Disposable-class mecha and beastformers were ninety percent of my social circle. Can’t look down on them without looking down on myself.”

20 ) As an Autobot/Decepticon, did they ever believe theywould be in a war? Participating in battles, taking the lives of their fellowCybertronians- how did they deal with war or not deal with war? How shockingwas their first battle, their first kill?

“I knew what I was getting myself into. I signed on pretty late. I would’ve been happier staying neutral, and I sympathized more with the ‘Cons’ reasoning, I just...couldn’t get on board with their methods. People were already dying by the time I realized I had to pick a side.

“It wasn’t shocking the first time I fought and killed. I’d seen death before. It was just...sad.”

21 ) Have they ever deserted a battlefield for dishonorablereasons?

“Depends how you define dishonorable. I’ve recommended or ordered a retreat when it was tactically necessary, when we were hopelessly outnumbered, and when we technically could have pressed our advantage but it would have cost more lives than I thought we could spare, and I’ve followed those through. None of that is dishonorable, unless you define honor as “hurling yourself headlong into the foe until they’re dead or you are”--and I’ve met mechs who see it that way.”

31 ) Do they have friends who joined the opposing faction?

“Of course. About half of my old construction crew, plenty of friends in overlapping fields, and my sister Vi--Ultraviolet. I think my mate would have, too, if it hadn’t been for me.

“I’ve...thought about looking them up. Just to see how many of them made it out, find out if we’ve got anything in common still after so long. Haven’t done it yet.”

WHY I BELIEVE JON SNOW WILL FATHER A BASTARD.....

So, this is one of my theories that I will very happy if I am wrong, but that is starting to look more and more probable to happen for me. I have been using the Search of Ice and Fire in the past few days looking for foreshadow of Jon fathering a bastard and voila, its actually a quite theme to find on Jon’s story.

"You don't know what you're asking, Jon. The Night's Watch is a sworn brotherhood. We have no families. None of us will ever father sons. Our wife is duty. Our mistress is honor."

"A bastard can have honor too," Jon said. "I am ready to swear your oath."

"You are a boy of fourteen," Benjen said. "Not a man, not yet. Until you have known a woman, you cannot understand what you would be giving up."

Jon felt anger rise inside him. "I'm not your son!"

Benjen Stark stood up. "More's the pity." He put a hand on Jon's shoulder. "Come back to me after you've fathered a few bastards of your own, and we'll see how you feel."

Jon trembled. "I will never father a bastard," he said carefully. "Never!" He spat it out like venom.

There is a reason why George RRMartin made Jon repeat so many times that he will never father a bastard. This has to be one of the most foreshadowed events of ASOAIF. Jon Snow will father a bastard child with Daenerys Targaryen. But I believe that the decision of hiding this girl will also involve Sansa.

Sansa its only true born child from Ned and Catelyn that had to live as a bastard herself in order to survive her family tragedy. She even got the feel in her own skin how badly bastard children are seeing and treated on Westeros

To make this theory even more possible, we have this scene on season 3 Episode 2 that was written specifically for the show, this dialogue never happened in the books. In the scene, Catelyn tells Tallissa that at some point she thought of telling Ned to make Jon a Stark, “to give the boy our name and make him one of us”.

CATELYN - When my husband brought that baby home from the war, I couldn't bear to look at him. I didn't want to see those brown stranger's eyes staring up at me. So I prayed to the gods, take him away. Make him die. He got the pox. And I knew I was the worst woman who ever lived. A murderer. I'd condemned this poor, innocent child to a horrible death all because I was jealous of his mother. A woman he didn't even know. So I prayed to all seven gods, let the boy live. Let him live and I'll love him. I'll be a mother to him. I'll beg my husband to give him a true name, to call him Stark and be done with it, to make him one of us.

TALISSA - And he lived.

CATELYN - And he lived. And I couldn't keep my promise. And everything that's happened since then... all this horror that's come to my family... it's all because I couldn't love a motherless child.

Then in A Storm of Swords - Sansa II we have what I believe a very big clue from George RRMartin himself.

She pictured the two of them sitting together in a garden with puppies in their laps, or listening to a singer strum upon a lute while they floated down the Mander on a pleasure barge. If I give him sons, he may come to love me. She would name them Eddard and Brandon and Rickon, and raise them all to be as valiant as Ser Loras. And to hate Lannisters, too. In Sansa's dreams, her children looked just like the brothers she had lost. Sometimes there was even a girl who looked like Arya.

Here we have Sansa dreaming about her future children, yet she never calls the little girl her daughter, the text makes sure to describe the child as “a girl.”

This passage always reminded me of this one from A GAME OF THRONES.

Ned thought, If it came to that, the life of some child I did not know, against Robb and Sansa and Arya and Bran and Rickon, what would I do? Even more so, what would Catelyn do, if it were Jon's life, against the children of her body? He did not know. He prayed he never would.

A Game of Thrones - Eddard XII

Notice that Ned never thinks about Jon’s name while naming his children? This was one of our biggest clues who lead us all to R+L=J.

Since I believe that Jon and Sansa will marry on season 8 and rule Westeros together I now believe that both of them are gonna lie in order to protect this girl. If anyone finds out she is the Queen of Ashes daughter, her life would be in great danger. Jon and Sansa will do the opposite of Ned Stark.

Ned brought a true born prince home and raised as his bastard child in order to protect Jon; Jon will bring home his bastard daughter, and raise her as trueborn child in order to protect her. I believe Sansa will lie and tell people that the child its hers. They will give them their Stark name and raise the baby as one of them. Sansa will love the child and be a mother to them. The story of Game of Thrones started with Ned Stark starting a war to prevent a bastard son of Cersei Lannister to sit in the Throne and it will end with a bastard daughter of Jon Snow as the heir of the Throne.

History repeat itself and in the end, there wont be much difference between Starks and Lannister, they all lie to protect the ones they love.“The things we do for love” will still be the theme of the story in the end….

Remember when I wrote in another meta that now I believe Jon will pass HER name to all HIS children? Yep, I believe that they will make boatbaby a Stark to protect her. BTW, this would

A FATHER’S DAUGHTER....

A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE its many tales in one; this is a tale of a dragon prince madly in love with a Wolf girl; this is also a tale about home and families; about the things we do for love; its also a story about slow learners who make several mistakes but that eventually do learn in the end........but ALSO, A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE is a story about father’s daughters. And that’s exactly what Arya, Sansa, Cersei, Daenerys, Brienne all are. These women are their father’s daughters. That’s why the show gave so much importance on those character’s fathers and hardly touched the mothers relevance. (if we remove Catelyns, the mothers have almost been non existenting in the show)

No one thought Sansa and Daenerys had much of their fathers in themselves, those two characters were always associated with their mothers, yet they will prove to all of us that they carry much of their Eddar and Aerys inside of them in the last part of this story.

SPOILERS – We also have this casting call for season 8, that asked for a young girl with sad eyes and to me, this screams Jon Snow daughter, so, that’s another reason I am basing this theory.

Now, I totally agree with @theirwinterfell when she says that Sansa will have a son with Jon, but remember that George RRMartin told Alfie Allen that the story will be similar to Star Wars ending, and in that story, a queen gave birth to twins, a girl and a boy. So, I am starting to believe that Sansa will give birth to a son, but both Jon and Sansa will present their “twins” to the court, which is why they hinted that Sam may assist in a birth in the future. If they want this secret to be kept at all costs, the only person allowed in the birth room would be Sammuel Tarly, Jon Snow most trusted friend. Just like Ned trusted Howland Reed to keep Jon Snow birth in absolutely secret.

PS- Now, I want to make sure that I do not like this theory. I find quite offensive, no woman should in order to prove they are a good mother, love her husband bastard children or the children he may have with other women. Sansa does not need to be a loving mother to Jon Snow bastard child to prove she is a good mother, or she is not like her mother (something the fandom believes to be a negative point); she already proved she is different from Catelyn whe she embraced Jon as a real Stark on season 6. But this is George RRMartin, and when I was studying Jon’s story arc, the foreshadowing of him fathering a bastard is quite simple too big to ignore, sooooooo
