It's time for the Monthly-ish Mail Call Hype Post!
Another set of awesome games I've gotten in the mail, and why I'm hype about them. Because people out there making rad stuff and I'm super into it!
It was a pretty big month. A lot of stuff arriving coincidentally at the same time, not all from crowdfunds, but still a really exciting collection. Let's dive in!
Beam Saber: I've played this one, and just started a campaign. Plus listening to Friends at the Table play it in Partizan (Which I legitimately cannot recommend highly enough). Mech Anime Forged in the Dark! It's genuinely a fantastic game.
Coriolis: A friend in a Discord server was clearing some room on their shelves before moving, and offered a few titles up. I wound up with three of them, this and the next two. Initially, they told me the box would only fit two, so I debated between Coriolis and DCC, and ultimately picked Coriolis because the sci-fi universe it takes place in seemed unique compared to what I've really experienced. An exploration-driven, Middle Eastern-inspired universe sounded really fascinating.
Dungeon Crawl Classics: I first became aware of DCC early in my TTRPG career, and was honestly mostly intrigued by DCC because of its use of Weird Dice; D3s and D5s and whatnot. I've heard mostly good things about it, and haven't done nearly enough Dungeon Crawling in my day, so I was quite pleased when it turned out this would also fit in the Discord Friend's "get it out of my house" box!
Last Fleet: This was the game I'd wanted from the pile. I'd recently backed Wreck this Deck, also by Black Armada, and have played Flotsam. I was intrigued by the pitch for this one, so it was the definite from the Discord friend.
Hull Breach: Mothership took the indie RPG scene by storm, and this book looked fantastic. I still haven't played Mothership, but honestly having this makes it feel like I could just about pick it up and throw anyone in. It's packed with scenarios and extra content, in a really great package.
Animon Story: I've been searching for the right Pokemon-themed RPG for a while. Too many of the ones I have seen spend a lot of time on the combat system, which I honestly find the least exciting part of the franchise. I want to explore and meet cool little guys. I confess I haven't read this one, but what I've heard of it sounds way more inspiring than most of the ones I've looked into.
The Hexcrawl Toolbox: I have The Bottled Sea and the Undying Sands from Games Omnivorous (Plus Vaults of Vaarn and Isle of Ixx). This box looks like an incredibly expansion of those ideas, and it's such a great package.
Enoch's Wake: Big fan of R. Rook games, ever since I had Richard on my (defunct) podcast to play a session of Moonlight over Roseville Beach. Enoch's Wake is a fresh take on a science-fantasy setting, and I really wanted to dig in and check it out more.
Sanctuary and Sentinel: I've followed Meghan Cross' work in the scene for a while, and it's all great. I love stories about lone sentinels guarding something long beyond the point of its relevance, and listening to how the two games intersect on Party of One really sold me that the Kickstarter had been a good investment.
The Book of Gaub: I will admit, I fall straight into peer pressure. I've heard about the Book of Gaub, heard all good things, and was really intrigued by the premise. It's honestly not even a game supplement per se, as much as it could function as an in-world text and concept, with annotations to make it usable in a game. The writing is fantastic, the art is great, and I really can't wait to find an excuse to bust it out. (I may or may not be trying to squeeze it into that Beam Saber campaign...)
Aberrant Reflections: Another that I'd heard really good things about, but also I had heard the words "puzzle dungeon" used pretty close to it, so I absolutely could not pass it up. It's been a great year for adventure content, so I am intrigued to get stuck into this one.
A Butterfly Dies and Cocoxoca: Primal Quest grabbed my attention because I don't feel like we see a ton of work in the stone age setting. A Butterfly Dies seemed like a really interesting premise, drawing on Mexican myths and murals to give a perspective on that world that I hadn't seen before. Cocoxoca was a pamphlet adventure that I thought would make a fantastic add-on.
Viva la Queer Bar: As someone starting to explore their queer identity, this was honestly a no-brainer. I'm honestly hoping this could be my first Descended from the Queen game played (I've got For the Queen, and have flipped through the cards, but still haven't brought it to the table). Again, heard incredible things about this game, so can't wait to check it out.
Guild: I did say earlier that I've not gotten enough dungeon crawlers in my background. I've been kicking around some Discords with Disaster Tourism in them, and have been watching this grow with interest. It came with so much stuff I really had to, packed a lot into two zines, a bookmark, and a tearaway pad.

My Data General Nova 1200 (right) meets its old coworker from Jackson Type (a typesetting operation in Michigan), a Digital Computer Controls D-116 that belongs to my friend Nevets. The DCC-116 is a direct clone of the Nova 1200, so the two are functionally identical and can use the same cards.
Tumblr media
The cool part is that both of our machines are now running modern power supplies that we worked together to design and implement. Mine was partially broken at the show, and we spent some time debugging, before I realized the parts I need weren't going to be available at the show. Meanwhile, my friend's DCC-116 ran great all weekend long, running BASIC from an ASR-33 teletype.
Tumblr media
I spent some time entering a fun demo program, which he punched to paper tape for me to take home after the show. That third front panel between our two machines belongs to Forgotten Machines, and was running a front panel tester board in a demo mode.

Have you thought anymore about building a function suite on your farm?
I'm no longer available to run it, but I'd be happy to help with the design and in setting it up.
It will not be happening. This was one of my silly ideas when I bought the neighbouring dairy farm in 2018.
The dairy farm had a lot of unused land. There is a secluded sunken area about half a mile from the old milking parlour which would be an ideal site for hosting parties without causing any noise nuisance to the local community. However, the road access to the site is limited, narrow and winding. There is only one road that the milk tanker can get along, but only with a short trailer.
For a change I heeded the advice of my Business Advisor, even though I was (surprisingly) granted planning permission. I might submit a revised planning application for a smaller building to accommodate visiting guests, but without a bar and restaurant area. As the original plans were approved, there is no reason for this planning to be refused... but, DCC seem to make rules up as they go along!

Let me introduce my current main WIP. It's not fandom related, it's for my model railroad, and it's not yet finished.
This is a rendering of a circuit board that I'm designing at the moment. It will be a DCC command station. My model railroad is run digitally, which means the tracks carry digital signals that tell each locomotive and switch individually how to run, which lights to turn and so on. The command station is the device that generates that. I have a number of different layouts, one of which has a good command station, one of which has a crappy old one, and the final one isn't even digital yet. So this will be the one that solves all issues for me, hopefully.
The design above isn't finished yet, and even the parts that are are not yet fully representative. The different capacitors are just there as options; some screen print overlaps; and some components (in particular all plugs and the relays that control the programming track) don't have 3D models so they don't show up.
Planned features:
Four layer board
10-25 V DC output, software controllable
Up to 5A output power, limited mainly by the main switching regulator.
Input 15-25V either AC or DC with polarity protection, selectable with some solder bridges (not yet in there). Optionally you can also bypass the main power regulator with another solder bridge (that I haven't added yet); useful in case you use e.g. a laptop power supply with a switchable voltage and don't need any regulation after that.
Railcom support
USB connection; not yet sure what for, but the main chip I'm using has USB support and I have some spare USB connectors here, so in it goes.
Speaking: The chip is an STM32L433RCT6P, chosen because I found it in stock at an electronics distributor. 64 kB RAM, 256 kB EEPROM, with support for an additional up to 256 MB externally (there's a spot for that on the board) and lots of fun extras that I don't technically need. It has an FPU! I don't need an FPU, but I will definitely do some floating point math computation on it just for fun.
Main external connection is WLAN using an ESP32 WROOM U module. I haven't decided on the housing, but I may go for extruded aluminum, so it's the U version that allows and requires an external antenna
It supports XBUS/XpressNet connections for old throttles from Lenz and Roco that I should probably throw away, but I paid good money for them, dang it.
It supports CAN for LCC / OpenLCB. I may not populate this part on all boards that I'm building, because I haven't actually decided whether I am interested. But the chip has CAN functionality built in, so why not.
There's an I2C connection to connect a cheap tiny OLED display for status messages.
Test points for all important signals (in particular the different internal voltage levels; yes, there is 3.3V, A3.3V and -3.3V and I need all of them).
Stuff still to add:
I will add pin headers (or space for pin headers anyway) for all the remaining pins on the STM32, and perhaps some on the ESP32, for future expansions.
Status LED and stop/go button on the front
Wire it all up, maybe move some stuff (mostly the STM32 around), which will cause all sorts of fun new routing issues.
Adjustments to make the jacks line up with the front panel once I've decided on a housing.
Features I'm not considering adding:
s88. I vaguely know what it is but I don't have any devices like that, and if that ever changed I could probably build (or perhaps buy) a converter that connects them via CAN.
Other buses like LocoNet.
Ethernet. I don't need it and it's actually more expensive than WLAN in this day and age.
In terms of software, I'm planning to use DCC-Ex on it. The whole project actually started out as a DCC-Ex shield, but once I realised that this wouldn't fit, I decided to make it standalone. Now, DCC-Ex is designed for Arduino, not STM32, and it doesn't support XpressNet, nor OpenLCB, nor Railcom, and their Wifi protocol is pretty weird and annoying which will be an issue (I'm planning to write my own control app for iPhone for it), so I'll probably change that or just replace it with the z21 one… so really, the software will not look a lot like DCC-Ex once I'm done with it.
Will this all work? I have honestly no idea. I mean, I'm fairly confident, I'd have given up on this long ago otherwise, but I have no guarantees either way until I've spent a lot of money on components and circuit boards and start soldering. Turns out doing it this way is not really cheaper than just buying a half-way decent one. That's what makes it exciting, though!
If it does work, obviously this will be released as open source. But it's still going to be a few days (more realistically weeks) before it's even ready to order the parts, and then a lot of soldering (current BOM stands at 194 actual components), and then a lot of software development before it's ready for that.

In June 2023 I went to the first edition of the summer variant of Dutch Comic Con. They moved it from May to June and it was terrible as it was WAY too hot to function, it was the first time I didn't even go in cosplay. Either way, I always post, so here goes.
I went for a whole weekend with my bestie Eneath, which was fantastic, because we could go by car instead of train. It was a delight. However, the weather was not great.
I do not have a lot to report though; I did not take any photos with other cosplay, also due to being insecure about not being IN cosplay myself. On day 1 I did visit with hobbit vibes in mind, and on day 2 I went more casual than I had ever been at a Comic Con I think? I don't actually remember how I went.
I did take some pics though!
Tumblr media
These are some dice I bought! Tiny dice because they are CUTE as hell, dark glittery dice because they are COOL as hell, and a box of d10s in ace colours (in my opinion) because I thought it was awesome except I did not realize they were just d10s, rofl! All good though, just a bummer as I thought it was a whole set.
Tumblr media
I went absolutely insane with finances this time around though. I bought a fan with my favourite Genshin Impact character on it, literally using the element anemo to cool myself down... a bunch of Digimon stuff that I can build and some TCG, and on my bag you can see a geo vision from Genshin Impact. The vision is actually why I made a new friend at my local grocery store, he recognized it from the game and now we chat on occasion LOL. Also a bottle of mead, sadly apple cinnamon, because they had no cherry cinnamon.
Tumblr media
A bunch of artist alley merch as well. As always, love me some Miraculous Ladybug. I also got two fake Pokémon cards, gorgeous Ninetales, my favourite Pokémon... a sticker of The Last of Us, my favouritest game ever, and some Genshin Impact stickers... now also including Kaveh, another character I really like.
Also... gosh I love this so much, look:
Tumblr media
Ellie and Joel figurines! Also a Kazuha waterprint art below it rofl. I ended up not liking the fanart as much so I kinda forgot I owned it.
And uh, super random but I fucking loved that they introduced an onigiri stand and I am *starts foaming*
Tumblr media
The one on the far right was vegan, the two on the left are tuna. I had to try both, haha.
Last but definitely not least, they had a little Lord of the Rings thingamajig that we visited, where you walked a little bit through the journey. I remember being at the verge of tears somehow because I felt overwhelmed, but I'm a pro at holding in emotions sometimes. Here is the pics I took. Let me test this new feature, if it sucks I will edit the post.

They should all be clickable for bigger. We'll see.
That is all I have to report on this Comic Con. The next post will be absolutely epicly, because it was a huge staple in my life and it still brings me emotions. Thank you for reading!

Introducing The KTM 1390 Super Duke R – The Beast, Reborn
The 2024 KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R and KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO have erupted into the Naked segment without warning, sending a clear message to the competition: there is a new BEAST on the prowl. With 2024 marking 30 YEARS OF DUKE, the all-new KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R and its high-tech stablemate - the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO - have evolved into their most fearsome iterations yet. The numbers tell the story - 1,350 cc, 190 Hp at 10,000 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm, ripping into the tarmac with pure ferocity and a new, more aggressive look to match. Impressive figures aside however, it is its effectiveness at getting power to the ground that makes it even more potent. For 2024, THE BEAST has undergone a striking aposematic evolution, sending a clear warning message to anyone brave enough to take it on. An all-new LED headlight unit dominates, with new tank spoilers and added winglets making it known that it is not to be messed with. A further reduced subframe cover eliminates the brake light making for an even sharper look and riding experience. With a lower overall profile and more emphasis placed on the compact chassis, the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R looks more muscular and aggressive than ever before. In short, KTM upped the attitude by lowering the altitude. A redesigned air intake and airbox see a revised fuel tank with an overall tank capacity of 17.5 litres - an increase of 1.5 litres over its predecessor. This not only takes the riding range up to around 300 km / 185 miles but also performs an important ergonomic function. In the hunt for grams, every panel has been calculated for optimum thickness and minimised where possible, with new tank spoilers and added winglets increasing downforce. However, it is the lightweight and ‘smart’ headlight design that makes the biggest visual impact. Weighing in at nearly 700 g less than the previous unit and boasting an alien-like design, it adds an all-new aggressive glare to the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R. Position and daytime running lights are located on the profile of the headlight, which auto-adjusts in intensity according to ambient light conditions. Additionally, the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R and KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO are fitted with Coming Home light functionality as standard. Here, the headlight will remain on for a short period of time after the ignition has been switched off, allowing for greater ambient visibility. This not only illuminates the surroundings but provides a level of safety when parking in dark areas. Backing up its muscular stance, at the heart of this ferocious BEAST sits an enlarged powerplant - an updated version of the LC8 - further marking its territory as the alpha. The bore is increased to 110 mm to achieve an engine displacement of 1,350 cc, with an all-new cam shift integrated on the cylinder heads. This provides more power and torque throughout the rpm range and allows for a more differentiated fuel mapping to meet the latest EURO 5+ emission regulations.  Getting that power to the ground comes courtesy of new, lightweight MICHELIN Power GP tyres with dual-compound technology, as well as a new WP APEX shock absorber which is fully adjustable, allowing for separate high and low speed adjustments, rebound and toolless pre-load adjustment. Improved DCC settings provide better pressure balance resulting in less compromise between suspension comfort and performance, while new 48 mm WP APEX Open Cartridge forks with split function provide optimised settings. On the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO however, the suspension management is taken to an all-new level with the latest generation of WP Semi-Active Technology (SAT). As the most advanced suspension system on the market, it features electronically controlled magnetic valves for variable damping, providing a wide range of adjustability – from maximum comfort to track-ready stiffness. Here, the SCU (Suspension Control Unit) adapts the damping rates via the magnetic valves in real-time, reading the road surface and rider style to automatically adjust the suspension on the fly. The technology feast doesn't end there, with both the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R and KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO debuting updated PERFORMANCE and TRACK MODES, complete with lap timer and telemetry stats, as well as optional ENGINE BRAKE CONTROL and an updated SUSPENSION PRO module for the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO. The KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R and KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO are available in select 30 YEARS OF DUKE colourways, reminiscent of the orange scheme found on the 2005 KTM 990 SUPER DUKE. Both 2024 models will be available from January 2024 onwards, UK pricing below: - 2024 KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R - £17,999 OTR - 2024 KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO - £19,599 OTR A full range of specially developed KTM PowerParts and KTM PowerWear are available for riders to personalise their motorcycles and get themselves kitted up in READY TO RACE gear, both functional and casual. KTM will also be giving away a brand new KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R towards the end of the year. Entrants are encouraged to visit KTM.com to sign up for the KTM newsletter and be entered into the lucky draw. Thank you for defending the cheerleaders 😭it's insane to me how people can be all about women empowerment as long as we stay in our lanes, but once again cheerleaders get mocked and berated as untalented pure eye-candy, like they're somehow unfit for the modern age or 'degrading' themselves so deserve to be shamed.
Those women are insanely talented! Cheerleading IS a sport, a dangerous one too, and hyping up teams IS a real activity.
It feels terrible to have women in the peak of their sport be talked about like that, being told they shouldn't be allowed to show up to places and being described with sick-emojis when they get to be centre stage to show off their routines :(
I do think the criticism came from a place of trying to support women by not wanting grid girls, but I think it’s just a misunderstanding about what cheerleaders, and specifically the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, are about. There’s a show about how hard it is to become one for a reason. And part of their job IS to show up at events and be gorgeous (and they do it so well, let’s be real). And the girls who get to show up and do those appearances are the best of the best of the best.
I think people don’t realize that cheerleaders’ function IS to perform, but all of it is a performance. Not just the dance, but the “whole package”. The pom pom hallway/tunnel is a normal thing for cheerleaders to do— I did it for 6 years when I was a cheerleader and it was part of supporting the team! Wearing that iconic uniform and being at events is part of being part of the DCC and it’s not at all degrading for them to get to do what they do.
The DCC are a uniquely American and VERY Texas thing, so I understand fans not understanding the significance of them, but it makes me sad to see people saying they shouldn’t be there. They deserve to be there just like other celebrities and athletes.

best coffee maker
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, there are several coffee makers under $100 that have received positive reviews for their performance, features, and affordability. Keep in mind that newer models might have been released since then, so I recommend checking current reviews and prices before making a purchase. Here are a few options that were well-regarded:
Hamilton Beach FlexBrew: This coffee maker offers versatility by allowing you to brew a single cup using grounds or a K-Cup, as well as a full pot of coffee. It's a great option if you're looking for flexibility in brewing options.
Black+Decker 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker: This is a simple and straightforward coffee maker with programmable features, such as delayed brewing and a keep-warm function. It's known for being reliable and easy to use.
Cuisinart DCC-3200 Programmable Coffeemaker: This coffee maker offers a variety of features, including adjustable brew strength, a self-clean function, and a brew-pause feature that lets you pour a cup before the brewing cycle is complete.
Mr. Coffee Optimal Brew 10-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker: This model is praised for its ability to brew quickly and keep coffee hot in a thermal carafe. It's a good choice if you're looking for a machine that can make a decent-sized batch of coffee.
Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker: This coffee maker stands out for its ability to brew both regular coffee and specialty drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. It comes with a fold-away milk frother and various brew size options.
AeroPress Coffee Maker: While not a traditional drip coffee maker, the AeroPress is a popular option for those who prefer a strong, concentrated cup of coffee. It's compact, easy to use, and great for single servings.
Remember that personal preferences vary, so consider factors like the type of coffee you like, the number of cups you typically brew, and any specific features you're looking for. Reading recent reviews and checking online retailers for updated options will help you find the best coffee maker that fits your needs and budget.
