Thank you for defending the cheerleaders 😭it's insane to me how people can be all about women empowerment as long as we stay in our lanes, but once again cheerleaders get mocked and berated as untalented pure eye-candy, like they're somehow unfit for the modern age or 'degrading' themselves so deserve to be shamed.
Those women are insanely talented! Cheerleading IS a sport, a dangerous one too, and hyping up teams IS a real activity.
It feels terrible to have women in the peak of their sport be talked about like that, being told they shouldn't be allowed to show up to places and being described with sick-emojis when they get to be centre stage to show off their routines :(
I do think the criticism came from a place of trying to support women by not wanting grid girls, but I think it’s just a misunderstanding about what cheerleaders, and specifically the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, are about. There’s a show about how hard it is to become one for a reason. And part of their job IS to show up at events and be gorgeous (and they do it so well, let’s be real). And the girls who get to show up and do those appearances are the best of the best of the best.
I think people don’t realize that cheerleaders’ function IS to perform, but all of it is a performance. Not just the dance, but the “whole package”. The pom pom hallway/tunnel is a normal thing for cheerleaders to do— I did it for 6 years when I was a cheerleader and it was part of supporting the team! Wearing that iconic uniform and being at events is part of being part of the DCC and it’s not at all degrading for them to get to do what they do.
The DCC are a uniquely American and VERY Texas thing, so I understand fans not understanding the significance of them, but it makes me sad to see people saying they shouldn’t be there. They deserve to be there just like other celebrities and athletes.
