thoughts on daniel isnt real: (spoilers ahead so-)
- the plot was actually pretty interesting tho i think the pacing was a bit off tho i cant quite put my finger on it
- i think miles robbins played luke very well (and no im not biased shut up)
- theres that scene where daniel takes over and he actually plays his character as daniel and the fact that he could still give off that eerie and uncomfortable vibe that daniel gives off while also playing luke as an insecure college kid with mental issues amazingly really shows thats hes a good actor
- again with him being a good actor, being able to play those 2 in daniel isnt real while also playing blase dylan (and dylan dylan) in the quarry is very impressive
- i didnt like the ending but i also liked it at the same time
- i feel like since they killed off luke, the cycles just going to continue with another person
- i just wish there was a more permanent solution
- overall a pretty good film

Daniel isn’t Real spoilers under the cut
I don’t really know what to think about the twist near the end of the movie. Like on one hand, I was really enjoying the psychological thriller part of it. But at the same time, I love that what was haunting Luke was in fact a demon, and not at all mental illness.
When I first started watching the movie and saw that his mom had schizophrenia, I was a bit worried about where this movie was going to go. Was this going to be another ‘my mental illness causes me to be violent’ trope? Was it going to demonize mental illness like all the rest of horror movies?
I’m so glad that it didn’t. It was pretty clear from the time Luke fell asleep at the party that what he was dealing with wasn’t schizophrenia. When he talks to his mom, it’s obvious that her mental illness is different.
But god, what a sad ending. I can’t imagine the guilt his mom must feel for not being able to help her son. As far as she knows, he was starting the same way she did, and he committed suicide. Cassie might feel guilt that she didn’t help Luke the day before when he showed up trying to explain what was going on. And Luke. who died to get rid of the demon. It was haunting to see that the Abyss was well and going to find another host.
Could this still be a metaphor for mental illness? Probably. But the movie does take care to 1. Emphasize that what Daniel is isn’t an effect of schizophrenia and 2. Show how the mom’s schizophrenia affected her (and how it was so different from Luke) and she wasn’t demonized for it. Whether she was a bad parent or not is up to opinion but the movie never shows her wanting to hurt Daniel or any one except herself. She was just trying to do her best while dealing with an untreated illness.
I think to conclude that this movie is saying ‘the only way to escape mental illness is by suicide’ means that someone wasn’t paying attention. I mean hell, they show Luke’s mom not trusting doctors or medicine and she hurts herself. Then they show her getting help, and she’s doing better. They give a great example that getting real treatment helped her.
I think I liked the twist of it. The movie really went ‘uhh actually mental illness doesn’t mean people will become murderers. That’s just due to the demon’

If you're a fan of Daniel isn't real and haven't watched the alternative ending, do it because wow it's a doozy.

[SPOILERS]
I have a couple of thoughts on the alternate ending; starting with Miles and Sasha's performance, their acting is great in this scene, absolutely filled me with dread. If it had been kept in the movie it would've definitely been one of the best scenes.
Now for theories; I think there's a few ways this scene could be taken due to it's so open endedness, but my personal interpretation is that this is really Luke, not Daniel using Luke's body.
I have a few reasons for this, the key factor for me being Luke's outfit. He's styled exactly as he is the rest of the movie, whereas when we see Daniel using Luke's body he quickly switches up Luke's appearance to match his own, including his signature greased back hair and suits, a far cry from Luke's plain shirts and jackets.
Beyond that, the way Luke speaks stands out to me. He's not malicious or coy as Daniel often is, even at his nicest Daniel still holds a playful almost condescending tone. In this scene Luke's voice is full of clear relief if not an ounce of desperation. Simply repeating "I'm here" as if to soothe himself.
I doubt Luke is a "ghost" but seemingly some element of him remains, and not only that but he's free from Daniel. Watching Luke we see a storm of emotions pass across his face. He's mourning his own death, he feels guilt and shame for the things Daniel did whilst puppeteering his body, but at the centre of it all he's free. It's all over which was his only real goal in the end, to stop Daniel. Now, as Luke says, he's here, because he is. Just him alone, and the all encompassing joy rolling off of him is devastating.
