Chapter 2:
Albedo suddenly craved a lot of things.
True to his words, Dainsleif brought him many, actually too many, desserts.
It started with the crème brûlée he asked for as compensation.
Divine is a word he associated with it. Thin, crunchy melted sugar on top with smooth creamy custard underneath. His mouth watered upon first contact and it was practically gone the moment his spoon touched it.
He melted in sweet, sweet sugary bliss.
Then came more delicious treats. Cakes, fruits, eclairs, tarts, meringues, and many more! Dainsleif seemingly never ran out of them.
When asked where he procures all the desserts, the trick he said was in their mutual love for each other.
"I'll believe you, only if you share the details of this trick of yours." Albedo had crumbs of the cream puff he was enjoying around his lips. Parts of the cream stuck to his finger tips and he licked it off.
"I know you, my little alchemist. You're trying to figure out the formula I've perfected in creating your desserts so you can learn it for yourself. No, no that won't do at all." Dainsleif took the last bite of the pastry in his hand and smiled in a way that always releases his so-called stomach butterflies.
"That was mine." Albedo blushed and looked away, brushing back a lock of his pale wheat hair. He hasn't quite acclimated to the new emotions inundating him. The status quo that has always consisted of calmness and collectedness is now tipping ever so slightly.
Klee had been the first one to notice. The sunlight child is surprisingly sensitive, especially when it came to her big brother. She told him how his smile has become really pretty as he watch her play with the new bomb toys he invented for her. After the young knight got her fill of the explosives, she insisted she play with his hair next and plaited four-leaf clovers in it just as she does with her dolls. Albedo has never been more glad to have such a fiery sweet sibling besides him.
"Albedo is now a beautiful prince!" Klee exclaimed, happy with how pretty he looked. "And a prince always falls in love with a princess and live happily ever after!"
Love was never something he'd ruminate about before, not even remotely in any sort of romantic capacity because it simply wasn't worth his time, but perhaps now...
"I can always make more. Just give me a kiss." Dainsleif closed much of their distance, as he is usually prone to do.
"I think... I think I've had my fill today..." His voice tapered off into a murmur.
"Is that so?" The man brushed off the flaky crumbs off his mouth with his thumbs. His warm hands on his skin felt soothing to touch.
Their eyes bore into one another, drawn like magnets, until Albedo slowly closed his. He filled the space between them with his lips, initiating a kiss for the first time ever.
His heart was beating faster than ever while his whole body was hot and fuzzy. He realizes the highly chemical nature of attraction, knows all the hormones that must be flooding him at this moment and what drives these survival instincts, and yet his focus wasn't in any of those.
Albedo focused on the feel, the warmth, and the taste of their kiss—the senses rather than the scientific.
It simply felt good, it always did with Dainsleif.
It's as close to romantic love as he's ever been, never had he spent any more energy than necessary to establishing working relationships with others. Yet, unexpectedly, a man came from his dreams to claim him and turn all of that around.
Sometimes he wonders if this is all still part of a dream somehow, but then just the mere proximity of Dainsleif dispels that fear.
I love you
The telepathic link is as intense as ever and their kiss deepened as a result.
Heat was something they both emanated and shared. Not until you have something you never had before do you realize how deprived you were of it.
Albedo embraced the man tighter, desperate for that body heat, desperate for touch, desperate for love...
I love you too
He confirmed it; four words bearing so much significance.
Parting tongue and lips had never been so sweet. At this point in time he was infinitely assured in their shared space.
"You didn't say that just so you can get more desserts did you?" Dainsleif grinned, all aglow.
Albedo's skin was flushed and he coughed slightly. "If that's the sort of response you say to someone that confesses their romantic attachment to you then I'm hopelessly unimpressed."
"Fine my sweet, I'm going to be honest with you then. I've loved you since the first time I saw you and yet I didn't want to accept it until much later. Now that you have reciprocated, I feel I am beyond words." At that, Dainsleif easily picked him up and carried him in his arms.
"Wah—!" Albedo clung to his neck as he was promptly whisked away to another dimension.
"There's pockets in the space-time continuum that I can go in and out of, away from all others except those that I allow."
The portal teleported them in an open meadow dotted with numerous wildflowers and daisies as far as the eye could see. Beyond in the horizons, sharp jagged peaks of the white-capped mountains arose and propped up the brilliant blue sky.
"Wow, the scenery is breathtaking. Did you create this?" Albedo got back on his feet and touched the earth. All the chemical properties were intact and yet he detects an alchemical manipulation in it as well.
He took a deep breath of the crisp and clean air—everything is in its peak natural perfection.
"No, I don't possess such an ability. I only find things and observe them."
Albedo already had his trusted drawing pad and pen in his hands and got lost within the pristine environment. A butterfly fluttered atop a daisy and perched on it, perfect for a quick sketch.
"Fleeting aren't they? And yet I can capture them at a specific moment in time and preserve it with just a few strokes of a pen."
"That's part of human nature, no? To preserve what they cherish and hold dear in their hearts. What is it that you truly cherish?"
"What I cherish? I cherish life and its creation, I cherish unraveling its mysteries, and I also cherish being in the company of others..."
Dainsleif walked up from behind and wrapped his arms around him.
"And how do you feel about creating life?"
"Creating life, do you mean...?" Albedo's thoughts rapidly flashed in his mind, connecting pieces of a puzzle that seemingly won't fit.
"I mean a child—a child was conceived that night." Dainsleif's voice was low and calm which only blew past his razor-edge nerves like a leaf.
"What? But—but how? I—I can't I'm a homunculus... The baby, will the baby be—"
"The baby will be fine, Albedo. You're both a miracle." The larger hand clutched his hand, and together, gently pressed down on his belly.
He knew it was impossible to feel anything as of yet, but a part of him wanted to feel something deep within.
It was at that second the butterfly took off from the daisy and landed right at the center of their intertwined hands.
"Am I ready for a child?" He talked mostly to himself. Then he thought of his closest point of reference which is none other than Klee and how he manages their time together. He enjoys being with her, loves how their personalities seemingly clashed and yet a mutual familial bond has formed nonetheless.
He's seen mothers and their children strolling in the streets of Mondstadt—talking, eating, laughing, hugging, kissing, yelling, playing—in all sorts of day-to-day scenes. He's never known of that sort of dynamic before and hadn't recognized that he wanted to be a part of it until now.
Will their child be as cute and energetic as his beloved sister? Will they be interested in the arts and in alchemy? Or will they take after Dainsleif and possess powers tied to the Abyss?
Most importantly, will their child be okay and have a normal life?
These questions, the possibilities both excited and scared him...
Dainsleif lovingly kissed his hair. "Take all the time you need to decide for there is no need to rush."

Albedo sketched chicken pot pie for lunch and conjured it, and it tasted like the paper it came out from. Thankfully, Dainsleif and his "tricks" already prepared a picnic basket beforehand that supplied sandwiches and salads that were much more palatable. There were more desserts as well, he didn't forget.
The picnic in the meadow with the fresh, cool breeze was truly relaxing. For the most part, they were suspended in a comfortable, contemplative silence with only the wind and the migratory birds providing natural ambient sounds.
Growing sleepy, he lied down and covered his eyes with the back of his hand. A second later, he felt Dainsleif's weight shift closer and he immediately turned over to face him.
Atop soft grass, Albedo snuggled on Dainsleif's chest, sapphire-veined arms draping protectively over his smaller figure. Better.
Locked in each other's embrace, they fell asleep in peace.
The truth and the meaning of this world—his final assignment.
For all of his life he absorbed everything his master taught him in alchemy like a sponge.
/
The four stages of alchemy are as follows: Nigredo, Albedo, Rubedo, and Citrinitas.
Nigredo was the time spent preparing and traveling with his master.
Albedo is the change needed for growth which was his master's parting and his own subsequent actions.
Rubedo is the refinement of his feelings, the friends he's made and the lover he's gained.
And finally Citrinitas, the transmutation stage in which meaning is born and revealed.
He wonders, surely his master had wanted him to live a life of happiness and fulfillment, that the truth and meaning he was tasked to find aligned with that sentiment.
By creating him, did his master achieve a part of their Magnum Opus, the Great Work in alchemy? It was very likely, for he knew that his master never did anything without a purpose.
This child he's carrying is the new birth of his whole existence, a creation of his own, and he will make sure this child would know how much of a miracle it truly is.
It will never know what it feels to be abandoned.
