Random prompt: Julian is sick of losing to Garak at kotra, so he proposes they play Mastermind instead.  He knows the algorithm that can solve the pattern in five moves or less, so there's no way he could possibly lose 😉
Garak turned the pegs over in his hand.
“Where’s the rest of it?”
Julian spread out the board and checked his code.
“It’s all there. You just need to guess the order of the pegs.”
“That’s all?” Garak asked, “it seems so simple. Is this a child’s game?”
Julian’s lips thinned. How like Garak to assume any game without complex rules would be easy.
I mean, true enough. Mastermind was a children’s game. He’d loved it as a kid, until his treatments took all the challenge out of it.
But all games were games of strategy and Julian’s memory and enhanced reasoning would make winning this one an easy bet.
Julian sighed and gestured for Garak to start.
“Go ahead. Best two out of three.”
A few minutes later, Garak cracked the first code. Sooner than Julian predicted, but it hardly mattered. He has an algorithm that can crack any code in less than five moves.
Julian placed his pegs carefully, and just as swiftly, Garak provided feedback to him about location and color. In 3 moves, he was certain he knew the pattern.
He placed the winning combination on the next row with a proud smile.
Garak put two white pegs and two colored pegs on the right-hand side.
Wait, what? That wasn’t right. He was sure he had the correct code. He tried again, puzzled, and Garak removed one of the colored pegs This guess was worse than the first.
Suspicious, Julian demanded to see the code Garak chose. Maybe he just didn’t know how to play correctly. Garak was reluctant to stop game play, muttering about cheating and proper gaming etiquette, but he eventually acquiesced.
Julian looked at his code in disbelief. It was indeed wrong. There was no way Garak provided him accurate feedback. Looking at the previous turns, he realized he’d misread the pegs on the second line.
How? He had a perfect memory. He knew that wasn’t what was there the first time.
Garak looked at him blandly, saying, “can we continue now?”
Julian thought about refusing, but he looked foolish enough already.
Embarrassed at his outburst, he motioned for Garak to compose a new pattern.
It took Julian 8 or 9 turns to find the correct pattern; far more than the 6 it had taken Garak at the start of the game. Again, it seemed like he’d incorrectly remembered the initial feedback.
How was that possible?
“Garak,” he asked suspiciously, “I feel like I’m losing my mind. It seems like the pegs are moving halfway through the game. They’re not actually moving, are they?”
Garak tried his hardest to look innocent, and then Julian remembered.
He’d loaned Garak his book of terran magic tricks the other week. Another treasured memory from his early childhood. He was pretty sure there was some sleight of hand that Garak would take to very easily.
He sighed and said sarcastically, “Well, now that we know you won’t let me win at any game, I don’t suppose you’d be willing to at least pull a rabbit out of my hat?“
Garak smiled winningly.
“That, my dear doctor, I can do.”
And he did.

Saw some really ornately carved pumpkins today, and was talking about how people go all out, and the pumpkin portrait carvings people will do with depth and shading and everything, and how there are always good fan-art pumpkin posts this time of year, and I realized--@cyrelia-j really needs to make a Jack-o-lantern.

Writing asks 5, 6, 11, and 13
5. What is an image/set of images that you’re particularly proud of?The bird nest in "Bed of Knives" and also p much everything in "Proverbs 6:16-19." As for not-Trek stuff I really loved the "Defenestration" for being a chance to make something symbolic and pretty.
6. Idea that you always wanted to write but could never make work?Ummmmm. So I have a folder that's titled "Pieces on Forever Hiatus" and I took a stroll through it. Hoooo boy. So, I had a vague idea for Brunt trying to seduce Quark for Spiteful Reasons and making our (least) fave bartender a piece of living art for parties. I also have so many self-inserts I've scrapped bc they're Embarrassing and Shameful power fantasies. Also I never got around to finishing some of the pieces under the name of "Kotan Zara." I think I lost my notebook for the autobiography. And that's p much the Boneyard of half-finished, half-baked plots.
11. If I’m showing off just one of your pieces to someone, which one should it be?Oof. Okay. By fandoms, then. For Hannibal, I'd recommend them "Defenestraton" because I had lots of fun writing that and people seem to really dig the surreal nature of the whole piece. For DS9, I'd recommend "The Caretaking of Ketracel White" because it's my quest to become The Keevan'Klan Person.
13. Are there any things that might have happened in any of your stories, but you changed them at the last minute? (So-and-so dies, they don’t actually kiss, main character has long extended ballet-based dream sequence, etc.)In "The Caretaking of Ketracel" I wanted to add more of my interpretation of Keevan's Jem'Hadar First but I never got around to it. I’m lazy.

DS9 Fanfic Rec: “Brain” and “Heathen” by Cyrelia_J
I normally don’t review fics that have been posted very recently, but why not? These two stories by @cyrelia-j constitute a two-parter, possibly leading to a third, concerning a unique take on Bashir’s genetic enhancements and how he might have dealt with them. I’m omitting spoilers, but I will say that the author was aiming to provide an explanation (besides the real one) for why Bashir’s enhancements didn’t show in Seasons 1-4, and damn if they didn’t come up with a good one. I was very impressed with the lead story “Brain,” and a comment I made on it led to the second one, “Heathen,” posted this morning, actually being “gifted” to me. That’s a first!
Excerpt (from “Heathen”)
Julian's hearing was too sensitive now. He could hear every breath, every whisper around him until he thought he would go mad. In desperation he asked Quark how he handled it. The Ferengi had told him with some dark envy that if he was Julian he'd be able to use his position, his gifts to net himself a fortune in secrets. Julian's vision was too sharp, so precise that it gave him headaches. Nurse Jabara had said it must be nice now during surgery to have eyes so good. Julian smiled as he tried to focus on her and every minuscule motion of her face almost gave him a migraine. Julian agreed affably. He didn't look at her when he said it. He stopped looking at people in the eyes if it could be helped. Their movements were too painful. He stopped looking at them at all, instead finding every fixed safe point of the station to keep himself sane. The whispers of his "changing" grew louder.
"It's okay Julian, you don't have to pretend. I appreciate your doing everything you can for Tekeny."
"I don't understand..."
"They told me your enhancements make it hard to feel things like... like other people. So it's okay if you can't."
Julian throws one of the dining room chairs in the holosuite into the wall breaking it.
Julian's strength returned and he almost couldn't control it. He was terrified to touch anyone. He jerked back almost violently when anyone tried. He had to relearn his grasp, relearn the tensile strength of everything he touched, reteach himself how to eat in the confines of his own quarters. He stopped taking lunches with Garak because his hands shook too much when they were all watching him. And then Garak met Ziyal and stopped asking him. Garak said that he understood... that it must be so difficult to be around them, that he was changed and perhaps might want a different beginning. They had toasted that final lunch to "new beginnings". Garak went to join Ziyal in the holosuite. Julian went back to his quarters and vomited up everything that he'd ate.

do you have any obscure constructicon fics you'd like to share? it's so hard finding content...
Yes! I’m going to list some fics here. I’m going to keep the fics recs not overly dark, because I don’t want to dump dead dove do not eat on anyone without asking.
But feel free to ask for that if you do want :3
Anyway...
Better to Light a Candle by Rebecca HB. SFW. ‘Hook first met Scrapper on a salvage operation. He first got to know Scrapper after falling down a hole with him.’ This is a good backstory fic for these two. Mixmaster is also there and he’s hilarious.  https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3530698/1/Better-to-Light-a-Candle
Procedural Documentation by Koi Lungfish. NSFW ‘Scrapper knows what Hook likes. Asexual slash.’ The fic where I discovered the word asexual. Which is why I’m likely so attached to this ship. Also its a fun read.  https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3712706/1/Procedural-Documentation
Creativity in Restriction by Steelcircle. NSFW. ‘After Hook finishes a bunker on Cybertron, Scrapper takes Hook on what basically amounts to a date.’ Warning for mild dubcon and questionable but hot edge play at the end. Also I recommend Steelcircles other Constructicon fics. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6011013/1/Creativity-in-Restriction Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying by Cyrelia J. NSFW ‘An experiment in human sexuality yields some rather unexpected results. Skywarp/Hook’ An unusual ship but this fic handles it well. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5369944/1/Dr-Strangelove-or-How-I-Learned-to-Stop-Worrying Sheer Dumb Luck by Dreaming of Everything. ???  ‘The Constructicons found Ratchet and asked him to repair their sixth gestalt member. He couldn't say no, although he knew he needed to. Forced into an uneasy truce, he's almost starting to get attached...’ Technically BayVerse but ignores chunks of the cannon and uses g1 characterisations. Well written and good use of more alien movie verse like designs. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4327380/1/Sheer-Dumb-Luck
Devastated by Wayward. SFW ‘When one of the Constructicons is destroyed, the others must find a sixth or die trying...’ This is just one of many of Waywards Constructicon fics. And I can recommend their other works highly. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/623691/1/Devastated
And that’s what I’ve got so far, without trying to trawl Livejournal at least.

The sun shown down on the sidewalks in the north torr district in cardassia city.  It always did.  The heat was intense, and the humidity was worse.  Huge swaths of barren landscapes stretched for miles on either side of the small residence that housed the O’Brien family.
Miles O'Brien wiped the sweat off his forehead.  He was in a foul mood.   Had it only been 31 days?
He stood up, pacing the small bedroom, hands balled into fists, kicking the chair in frustraction.
Ouch.  Well, that was a mature reaction.  Sometimes he felt like he was losing his mind.
I love Keiko.  I love her.  It’s worth it.
Oh hell, saying it didn’t change anything.  It was the worst assignment he'd ever had.
"Yes, sir," he said, every day, "the boxes have been delivered.  Yes, all the leftovers were brought to the shelters in the capital.  No, no problems enroute."
God how he wished there would be a problem.  Just once. Something he could puzzle out. Use his starfleet diplomatic training for anything other than keeping his mouth firmly shut.  He'd have welcomed a breakdown of the Janad.  Those old ground vehicles had certainly been through enough.  Then at least he could put his engineering skills to work, shake the aching feeling of his brain rotting as the days went by.
"I'm sorry, chief, but we find that Cardassian men rarely have an aptitude for engineering work. Yes, admittedly you're human, but you're not familiar with Cardassian equipment.  Come now, you can surely see we have no use for a transporter operator."
When he'd protested, they'd told him in no uncertain terms that the last thing they needed was another unskilled set of hands to train.   He'd seethed with anger, but there was no recourse.
Keiko had appealed to Garak. They were old friends; he'd never asked why and truly didn't want to know.  The ambassador had at least been able to secure work for O'Brien.
Work.  He laughed.  I'm a glorified truck driver. Good thing I spent all those years at the academy.
The thought came unbidden, and he shook his head to clear it. His father had been adamant that there was meaning in working with one's hands.  And Miles certainly knew science officers with nothing but scorn for career engineers, especially noncoms, feeling that they were no more than mindless mechanics.
He just wanted to be useful.  The food needed to be delivered; it was a necessary job.  But he'd never felt more ineffectual.
And we've circled right back to bitter.

Anatomy Birb Art Tips
Sharing some Anatomy Tips that I've made for @cyrelia-j and @dayoldhakarl, hope you guys find it useful
Arm
Tumblr media
When building the forms, it helps to think of the arm as three chains, with two facing forward (deltoid & forearm) and the biceps/triceps as facing forward. The forearm has some leeway, since it's rather symmetrical and can twist.
Alternatively, for cartoony arms:

Not knowing what you look like, I assume you're like 6 foot tall with a bright red fauxhawk, walk around in a kilt, a band tshirt, and a pair of knee high boots with a million buckles, long painted nails, and a star tattoo on your cheek
All of this is very incorrect except the band t-shirts. Those I have a million of. I’m considering doing my hair red or some kind of ombre using red.
