Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 10th April 1923
Tuesday 10th April
Motored with Paul of Serbia and Lady Cimmie Mosley¹ to Chichester for Lady Doris Gordon-Lennox’s² wedding. The groom is a horsey creature called Clare Vyner³ who strangely looks and lisps like a parish priest. The town was crowded with cheering people and bedecked with flags; the cathedral packed with locals with the Mayor and Corporation in full robes and with ‘fashionables’ from London. Paul was rather triste and thoughtful as he has wanted to marry Doris for years; it would have been a most disastrous alliance and I did my best to prevent it. His favourite hymn was played, by accident or design?? The Duke of York arrived with Elizabeth, her first really public appearance since her engagement. Afterwards we went to Goodwood House where we were recieved by the old Duke of Richmond.⁴ There were many presents but I looked more at the Van Dycks. It is extraordinary how Stuart they look these Gordon-Lennoxes.⁵
1. Cynthia Blanche Curzon (1898-1933), second daughter of Lord Curzon and his first wife, Mary Victoria Leiter (1870-1906), of Chicago. Lady Cynthia (as she became on her father’s advancement to an earldom in 1911) married in 1920 Oswald Ernald ‘Tom’ Mosley (1896-1980), who succeeded his father as 6th Bt in 1928. Mosley was Conservative and then Independent MP for Harrow from 1918 to 1924, failed to beat Neville Chamberlain in Birmingham in 1924, but became Labour MP for Smethwick from 1926 to 1931. He then founded his own party and became leader of the British Union of Fascists. His pursuit of fascist doctrine in the 1930s made him in equal parts a figure of fear and ridicule. He was interned during the Second World War with his second wife, Diana Guinness (née Mitford) (1910-2003), who had been his mistress, and whom he married in 1936 in Goebbels’ house in Berlin, with Hitler in attendance.
2. Lady Doris Hilda Gordon-Lennox (1896-1980), daughter of the Earl of March, who succeeded his father in 1928 as 8th Duke of Richmond and Gordon; married Clare George Vyner (né Compton) (1894-1989) in 1923.
3. Vide supra.
4. Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox (1845-1928), by courtesy Lord Settrington until 1860 and Earl of March until 1903, when he succeeded his father as 7th Duke of Richmond and Lennox and 2nd Duke of Gordon.
5. The dukedom was created in 1675 for the bastard son of King Charles II with his mistress, Louise de Kérouallie.

[Celebration] [Celebration Masterlist] [Masterlist]
Warning: Oswald Mosley. (18/21+). I do not consent to my work being translated, copied or posted elsewhere on this platform or any other.
Words: 1683 words
These things were gold in every way possible and always the opposite of boring.
She never came unprepared, on the contrary. She had scanned the entire catalogue already, made her inquiries, taken her notes both mentally and physically and by now she was more than sure in what she would walk home with today.
The prize, however, was only one part of the fun. Like all others, it was a fun social get together, with a lot champagne and even more gossip. But this place was one of very few where she could be sure to see the masks slipping soon, exchanged for battle armour as the bidding war began. And yet no one wanted to lose face.
“Look who decided to show their face.”, her husband mumbled as they nodded towards a small group of people looking at the display of a painting - Eve and the Serpent, she remembered.
“You shouldn’t have told me.”, she sighed. “Now we have to go and say hello.”
Her husband chuckled.
“Family duties.”, he teased as they walked up to them. “Cimmie, darling!”, she greeted her cousin Cynthia with her best socialite smile as she leaned in for kisses.
“How is Cousin Mary?”
“As well as can be, I suppose.”, her cousin replied with a slight shrug. She wasn’t a real cousin, just a second cousin, but she might as well have been a fifth cousin and she’d still referred to her as such.
“Still vehemently refusing to settle down.”, her husband said.
Your smile came a little too late while his was a little too wide.
“Oswald!”, she greeted, giving him the obligatory greeting, not missing how his hand lingered on her waist.
It wasn’t enough, apparently, that he was sleeping with Cynthia’s sister and her stepmother too.
Why not add a cousin to the mix, eh?
Well, Sir Oswald Mosley was on her to do list right between eating glass and walking barefoot on red hot iron.
He greeted her husband too, and she was already planning her escape, but apparently her pest of a cousin in law wasn’t keen of letting them leave yet.
“Have you met Thomas Shelby yet?”, he asked her husband and before long they were introduced to the solemn businessman from Birmingham and his tall and elegant wife.
Shelby - not a name she had heard before and a questioning look to Cynthia confirmed just that.
An upstart then.
Oh well. Rather an upstart than Sir Oswald.
But it seemed she wasn’t the only one who was on Sir Oswald’s list of items for consideration at this auction. She didn’t miss his hand on Mrs Shelby’s back as he guided her forward for the interaction. And she certainly didn’t miss how the woman flinched at his touch.
“Are you interested in this?”, her husband asked, waving the program in the direction of the painting.
Eve was in the nude, her head turned away from the snake in dramatic fashion, but her eyes betraying her. The apple gleamed a bright red.
“Oh I am always interested in artwork like this.”, Oswald insisted, licking his lips.
“The concept of seduction is fascinating, isn’t it, Mrs Shelby?”
“What?”, she asked, her cheeks flushing bright red.
Beside her, her husband shifted, the muscles in his jaw clenching.
“Especially with Eve - equally the seduced and the seductress in equal measures.”
Now all colour that had only just climbed up her face faded, leaving behind an ashen grey colour.
“But then again, a woman is at once apple and serpent in more manners than one - the birth of all sin.”
Mrs Shelby looked to her husband but he seemed to be content with silent stares.
Her, not so much. So she giggled.
Loudly. It made them all look at her as if she had lost her mind.
“Oh Oswald, really?”, she asked, clasping a hand on her chest. “You must take him to church more often, Cousin. It seems he has forgotten a few rather important details.”
She saw his lip twitch in anger, after all, he hated nothing more than mockery.
“And what would that be?”, he hissed.
She put her hand on his chest and smiled.
“Well everyone knows the story. Adam and Eve could eat any fruit from the Garden of Eden except the apples from…?”
When there was nothing but confused silence, she answered her own question.
“The tree of knowledge of good and evil, as it would give them freedom of thought and will, of judgement, the capability to make their own decisions.”
Murmurs and nods greeted her.
Oh this is going to be fun.
“Now remember the details. What were the exact steps?”
“The snake seduced Eve to eat the apple.”, Cynthia said.
“And then they were cast out.”, her husband added.
“Ah - not quite. Cimmie, you’re right. The first step is the snake seducing Eve to eat the apple. By logic she would have gained the knowledge over good and evil and the capability to make her own decisions, no?”
Once more sounds of approval greeted her, as well as a few raised eyebrows.
“And what happened then?”
“They were cast out of Paradise.”, Oswald said impatiently.
Perfect.
It couldn’t have been better if she had scripted it.
“Only they weren’t, dear! Not yet, anyways. Eve gained knowledge first and nothing really happened. The problems only started when she decided to share the knowledge and the freedom with Adam. As soon as he had a bit of knowledge, he started making problems for everyone. You recall, the whole fuss about being naked? That was his idea, not Eve’s.”
Beside her, her husband chuckled.
“So it wasn’t really men and women, or rather women and men gaining knowledge that was the problem but rather men using that knowledge to start making problems as soon as the apple touched their tongue.”
Cynthia smirked and even Mrs Shelby wore a hint of a smile.
“Although there’s also a point to be made that Eve must’ve already have had free will to be able to pick the apple and eat it so the original sin was not her having that capability, but rather her sharing it with Adam.”
She looked from one to the other, and then directly at Oswald, seeing his silent rage.
“Now I am not a supporter of smiting, but it seems in either interpretation, God really did not seem to want men to have knowledge or capability, don’t you agree?”
End.

EDINBURGH.- A rare Mughal mother of pearl ewer once owned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy to India and dating from the 17th century.
The ewer has been in the family since Lord Curzon of Kedelston was Viceroy of India 1899–1905; it was left to his daughter Lady Cynthia Curzon who married Sir Oswald Mosley, then to her grandson Rupert Forbes Adam.
Gujarat is situated on the Northwest coast of India and was a prosperous and wealthy region that rose to prominence under the influence of the Mughal Empire. Its ports were busy centres of export, and during the 17th century the Portuguese, Dutch, French and English all established bases in the region to capitalise on the lucrative trade in luxury goods.
Mother-of-pearl wares from Gujarat were being exported to Europe in the early part of the 16th century through the 17th century and were frequently given European made mounts. Based on a European metalware shapes, examples of these highly desirable wares like the present lot can be found in the inventories of royal collections of that period: one is recorded being given to Henry VIII by Oliver Cromwell in 1534 as a New Year's gift.

Tumblr media
You knocked lightly on the heavy wooden door and awaited your entrance.
The Mosley’s London house took up the whole block, and was plastered over with white. The street was empty of cars, and there were no pedestrians at 12 o’clock on a tuesday afternoon. Everyone, much like your cover story, would be out to lunch.
You turned back to the door as you heard the heavy metallic latch being drawn back.
You took these last 3 seconds to calm your nerves. Utter surety overcame you when you remembered that at the end of all this, that horrible son of a bitch would be missing the back of his skull.
That put a smile on your face, a smile that you greeted the woman who stood in the doorway with.
_________
Sunday
“Because i’m fucking Mosley’s wife. And therefore i am the only one who can kill him.”
The silence was broken after a long while by Arthur.
“You fucking what?!”
You rolled your eyes and pinched your nose.
Tommy still stared at you with his mouth slightly open. Upon closing it, he furrowed his eyebrows and trod over to where you were seated.
He looked down at you,
“When the fuck were you going to tell us? You could have fucked this up for me! What the fuck were you thinking!? Do you want to get yourself killed?!”
You returned his gaze,
“I should ask you the same question! Fucking assassinating a very powerful man in front of hundreds of people? And for your information, who i decide to fuck does not concern you!”
Tommy scoffed,
“You are unbelievable! Everything concerns me. You are a fucking Shelby and were interfering with my business!”
Before you could yell back Polly stood up.
“Enough!”
She slammed her glass down on the table.
“Stop bloody bickering and focus on what really matters right here and now.” She turned to you.
“(y/n) does Mrs. Mosley know that you are a Shelby?”
You shook your head. You had resigned yourself from most family affairs at the age of 16, and left to travel abroad before the Shelby name became renowned. And that, paired with being the 4th child (between Ada and John), you were virtually unknown, and definitely not assumed to be affiliated with the Shelby’s.
“Ok so thats a start.” Polly sighed. “Tommy do you have any immediately pressing questions?”
Tommy clenched his jaw. Running his hand over his chin he asked,
“What makes you think you can kill her husband and get away with it?”
You responded without a beat,
“She hates him. He’s a faschist, abusive, monster to whom she was practically forced to marry. And add to all that, she evidently does not care for men.”
“Have you ever discussed killing her husband before?”
“No, tommy. I’m not a complete idiot. But she has told me many things; its easy to infer.”
Tommy nodded slightly in acceptance.
“Fine. This is our best choice so let’s see what you got.”
_________
Monday
Tommy paced the room while twirling a pen in his hands.
“We need to perfect this. There can be no flaws.”
You lay back on the couch, rolling your eyes.
“Tom, i know! Do you really want to go over everything again?”
“(y/n) you know the answer is yes.” Polly replied, taking a drag of her cigarette.
After yesterday’s meeting Ada, Michael, Finn, and Arthur had returned home. Polly stayed to make sure you and Tommy didn’t strangle each other. (she always said that you two were too alike and would try to kill each other if left unsupervised)
You sighed.
“Ok here it is again.”
The plan was simple: You would meet Cynthia Mosley at your usual time, 12 noon on tuesday. There were only 2 servants at the London House and they both kept to themselves, only thinking that you were a friend who called weekly for lunch. You would eat, talk, and go up to her room. You both never feared the appearance of Mosley, as he was in the house of commons for a few hours, and then would always retire to his office where someone would keep him occupied for much of the later afternoon. Tomorrow, however, Tommy would catch Mosley before he got to his office and give him cause for suspicion. Mosley would return home to find his wife in bed with, well, you. Then bang. You would then break the bedroom window and scream. The goal was to make it seem like one of Mosleys enemies had shot him through the window. Before any serious inquiries could be made, Cynthia would be on a ship headed for america, along with the 2 maids. And you would have left before you were seen.
All set.
_____
“Hello Sally”
You greeted the maid who opened the door.
“Mrs. Cynthia is in the study, ma’am. You will be taking lunch in there.”
You thanked her and made your way down the hall.
Lunch.
Chitchat.
You climbed the stairs.
She sheds her clothing.
Tommy pulls Mosley aside.
Whispers in his ear.
Mosley’s face flushed with anger.
Cynthia moans.
The car screeches to a halt.
The bed hits repetitively against the wall.
You hear the door open below but double your efforts to make sure Cynthia doesnt hear.
___
Mosley enters the house with a bang. The maids are nowhere to be found. He waits for a second and sure enough, hears enough to confirm his suspicion. He throws his hat to the floor and flies up the stairs.
He kicks the door open, causing it to slam against the wall with a loud crash.
Cynthia yelps and opens her eyes, which widen with shock as she sees her husband.
Mosley only sees you, frozen in shock and confusion as you lift up from between her legs.
He is so confused that his normal instincts dont kick in when you reach under the sheets and produce a gun.
His eyes finally widen, too late.
“Courtesy of Tommy Shelby.”
You pull the trigger. Mosley slides to the floor, blood fanned out behind him on the wall.
You stand and look down at his lifeless body, spitting at him fro good measure.
“take that you faschist fuck.”
You turn back to the much stunned Cynthia.
“Ok,” you start. “I guess i should explain.”

Sam:  "I think you're asking the wrong guy.  He has 44 days of unused vacation time." Callen:  "What?! What do you want me to tell you? - I happen to like my job."
Anything else:   At a staff meeting at the US Naval Base at Seal Beach, Commander Torres is giving a presentation to about five members of the Navy and five civilians in a conference room.  The Navy has improved efficiency and cut down on workplace accidents. Everyone is pleased.
As the Commander tries to continue, she is distracted by a buzzing noise.  She asks about the sound but nobody else in the room can hear it.  Struggling through the next item on the meeting's agenda, Torres loses consciousness.  Hitting the conference room table hard before falling to the ground, Torres in bad shape.  Lt. Zhang, a female officer sitting near the Commander jumps up to help.  A male officer sitting across from Zhang also offers assistance – Torres is bleeding from her left temple.  The other members of the Navy are racing off to get help.
Kensi and Deeks are having a hard time trying to find a honeymoon hotel room in Hawaii.  Every room is booked in Kauai.  Kensi found for the last available room in Maui for $4,000 a night.  Deeks is switching to Fiji, Kensi to Tahiti when Callen and Sam arrive.  They think Kensi and Deeks are cutting it a bit close.  Plus, March is spring break.
Kensi suggests Italy – great food, culture, history.  No, Deeks thinks that what people do when they retire.  Deeks wants to do something active.  Kensi corrects him – he wants to surf.  "Maybe."  Deeks asks Sam about his dream vacation.  Sam plans on taking Aiden and Kam to Egypt.  Kensi loves that idea – the cradle of civilization.  No, Sam is taking the kids scuba diving in the Red Sea.  Deeks loves that idea because it is the trip you make when you're not 107.
Deeks ask Callen about his dream vacation.  Callen doesn't know but he has 44-days of unused time.  Kensi and Deeks are shocked.  Callen isn't – he loves his job.  Deeks is sad in his heart for Callen.  He mentions that people in Denmark have the shortest work week and five days of paid vacation.  Kensi likes the idea of going to Denmark.  Deeks does not. Eric arrives, suggesting Iceland for its fjords, glacier climbing and Viking museums as he calls to the team to Ops.  Callen checks on his phone – high for the day of 28 in March.  Deeks is not going to Iceland.
An office camera caught Commander Valerie Torres hitting the deck during her staff meeting.   She is in the hospital with a major concussion – still unconscious.  Callen think it is a medical issue.  The Commander, Nell tells the team, felt for the last week that someone was trying to kill her.
Sam asks if she is worried about someone in particular.   Calling the threat "vague", Eric says the Commander requested escorts to and from her car on base.  It could be a personnel issue but it could be the Commander's job.  She is responsible for 500,000 square feet of ammunitions storage.  Disrupting command disrupts operations and that could make things easy for a thief. Deeks volunteers to go to the Seal Beach – good surfing there at low tide.  No, Callen and Sam are going.  Kensi and Deeks can visit the Commander in the hospital, a mere six-miles from the beach.
Kensi and Deeks arrive at Commander Torres's room.  With a bandage on her head, she is still unconscious.  Sleeping in the a visitor's chair is Emilio Torres, the Commander's husband.  He was on the East Coast when his wife was stricken and flew all night to return.  The CT scan on Commander Torres shows no brain damage or internal bleeding. Emilio is waiting and hoping for his wife to wake up.  She did not have a heart attack or stroke, according to the doctors.
Asked about threats, Emilio shows Kensi and Deeks a text his wife sent when he left for Boston.  Suffering from headaches, fatigue and insomnia, she thought someone was poisoning her.  Kensi asks if the Commander saw a doctor – she did not.  The two of them agreed to wait a day or two to see if it wasn't the flu.  A toxic screen showed came back clean – no poisons in her system but Deeks offers a more complete test run by the Navy.  It would look for nerve agents or heavy metals poisoning.  Emilio is shocked.
A civilian aide, Jerome, at the Naval Station is reviewing with Callen and Sam the items available to eat and drink at the meeting.   There were bagels and cream cheese – Jerome checked the expiration dates and all was fine.  Nobody else at the meeting got sick, except Jerome.  He nearly fainted when he saw all the blood.  Jerome being a civilian is a great relief to Sam.  Callen asks how long Jerome worked with Commander Torres – two and a half years.  He answers her calls, attends every meeting with her.  The Commander is well liked and likes everyone.  She chats with the cleaning crew. Sam wants a list of everyone – civilians and Navy – who report to Torres.  "Consider it done."
Callen looks around the room.  There are cameras in the front of the room – the footage NCIS has was from a camera in the back.  Jerome explains that there are three cameras in the room.  They teleconference a lot of their meetings and the multiple cameras can pick up everyone who is speaking.  Callen wants to see the meeting from the cameras in the front of the room.
With split feeds on different monitors, Callen and Sam review the meeting footage.  The male Navy officer sitting across from Lt. Zhang is Chief Warrant Officer Walter Purdue.  He is the ordinance officer while Lt. Zhang is the command's safety officer.  Callen wants to speak to both.  After Jerome leaves to find Purdue and Zhang, Callen reviews something he saw on the video feed with Sam.  Just before the Commander faints, both Purdue and Zhang seem unsteady.   Whatever "hit" the Commander, also hit them.
Meeting with Callen and Sam in the conference room, Purdue remembers feeling a bit off.  He went for a run earlier that day and skipped breakfast.  He thought it was a little low blood sugar so once the meeting broke up, he grabbed a protein bar.  Lt. Zhang was a little nauseous.  She thought it was a bout of gastritis – she had a glass of wine with dinner the night before the meeting.  The two confirm there was no strange smell in the room.  The only available liquid was coffee.  Callen asks about strange sounds and Lt. Zhang mentions a ringing in her ear.  It ended when the Commander fainted.  As Callen and Sam end the interview, Purdue asks about the Commander.  Sam tells him the Commander is stable.
Once the two leave, Callen and Sam eliminate the idea that the food or air were tainted – everyone would be ill.  Instead, the Commander collapsed and the two people closest to her physically also had a reaction.  Callen looks out of the class windows of the conference room.  What if something came from the outside like what was done to US diplomatic staff in Cuba – a microwave attack.  There is a large office tower across the conference room – a perfect place to take a shot at the conference room.
While waiting outside the Commander's room, Kensi found some hotel rooms in Acapulco.  Deeks thinks hanging with their cartel friends and maybe reenacting dragging him through the desert isn't his idea of fun.  Deeks suggests renting an Airstream and seeing all the national parks.  Kensi loves the idea but not for their honeymoon.  Leaving the decision to fate, Deeks wants to put the names all seven continents on pieces of paper, throw them in a hat, pick one out and that's where they are honeymooning.  Kensi worries about Antarctica but Deeks thinks they can hug penguins.
Eric and Nell chime in on comms.  Emilio Torres was supposed to speak at a conference at MIT.  He is a professor of astrophysics at CalTech.  Professor Torres comes out of his wife's room to tell Kensi and Deeks she is waking up.
In the room, a slightly disoriented Commander is becoming aware of her surroundings.   The Commander knows what happened at the meeting and that she has 12-stitches "in my attic." She wants to go home but the doctors want to observe her for a little while.  Emilio is off to fetch his wife's doctors.
The Commander was feeling fine during the meeting until she started hearing a high-pitch noise but nobody else heard it.  While she's talking, she starts hearing the noise again.  Becoming agitated, her heart rake spikes.  Kensi and Deeks witness the attack. As Deeks gets a doctor, the video screens of the monitors tracking the Commander are also impacted by the attack.
Eric updates Callen and Sam on what happened to the Commander.  There is a thought that the head injury progressed so she is getting a second CT scan.  Nell looked into the tenants in office tower near the conference room.  Nobody suspicious. But if the Commander was attacked again at the hospital, the bad guys are mobile.  Callen and Sam still aren't sure this is anything more than the Commander being sick.  Eric describes what a microwave attack can do – they can cause actual physiological changes.
Callen remembers the attack on the personnel in Cuba.  Everyone heard something.  Even covering their ears, the Frey Effect, or MAE (Microwave Auditory Effect), could harm a person.  Eric wants to send equipment to the hospital to monitor for microwaves.    Nell has video footage of an outdoor parking lot near the conference room window.  A microwave attack could be launched from anyone one of the SUVs or minivans on the structure's roof.
The Commander is returned to a different room for security reasons.  NCIS put an agent who resembles the Commander in her old room to try to bait an attack.  Kensi has a tough question for Emilio – could his wife's symptoms being psychological?  He calls that ridiculous.  Deeks asks about trouble at work – no problems.  Same with home – the two have a daughter who is a junior at Harvard.  Emilio saw in a school play the night before the attack.  If anything, the Emilio and "Val" are enjoying their empty nest.  He leaves to be with his wife.
Deeks suspects Emilio could be behind the attack.  He has the background.  The attacks started after he left for the East Coast, the attack at the hospital happened with him out of the room.  Kensi thinks the two have a perfect life.  "The brightest lights have the darkest shadows," Deeks tells her.  Kensi flips it – if Emilio is going to conferences regularly, maybe the Commander is seeing someone else.  Deeks knows the meerkats who can dig up any dirt on the Torres family.
With the Commander out of commission, CWO Purdue is running the team with Jerome as his aide.  Sam wants an increase of security at all of the ammo station reporting to Torres.  Sam also wants Jerome to contact him if anything looks odd.  Leaving the office building, Callen and Sam are sent photos by Eric and Nell.  There is a minivan at both the parking structure and the hospital.  They have the source of the attack but no clear shot of the license plate.
In the hospital parking lot, Deeks is trying to look at the fake Commander's room with binoculars but can't see through the bangs of Kensi's fancy new haircut.  Seriously, the NCIS Agent in the room is "selling" the look of a woman about to be discharged. A monitor is near the window, waiting for the next attack.
In a blue ballcap, Deeks has the slips of paper with the continents.  Kensi can't believe they are going to do this right there but Deeks worries that "rival couples are dashing are dreams by booking their honeymoon packages."  Doing the picking, Kensi wants a second chance if she doesn't like where she picks.  She suggests they both pick a location and decide as a couple what's best.  That defeats the purpose according to Deeks.  South America is the winner.  Kensi loves Rio, tangoing in Buenos Aires.  Deeks thinks about swimming with the iguanas and turtles off the Galapagos Islands.
Eric and Nell contact Kensi and Deeks.  Emilio Torres had a quiet stay in Boston – one hotel room key, no minibar charges, breakfast with his daughter at Denny's.  Security cameras near the Torres home show the Commander coming and going on a regular routine.  They also show the same minivan – a Dodger Caravan – outside the home.  The Commander was under constant attack.  Eric and Nell keep arguing about who gets to tell Kensi and Deeks important info to the point where Deeks has to ask the "meerkats" to "lock it down."  Nell does not have anything on the Dodge's license plate but Eric does because while there is no "I" in team, there is one in Eric.  Nell mentions the "U" in obnoxious.
The van is registered to a Reza Lajani who is a psychologist.  With Kensi and Deeks guarding the commander at the hospital, Callen and Sam are off to see Lajani in his Santa Monica home.  Kensi ends their communications asking Eric and Nell to "please work it out, please."  Deeks suggests trust falls.
Sam tells Callen that his 44-days of vacation is nearly two months but he will lose 14 of those days if he doesn't use them.  Callen marvels at Sam doing all that math in his head.  Callen lists ways to use the off-time.  Going to Russia comes up but Sam thinks that's more work than play.
At the Lajani home, his wife answers the door.  Reza is with a client.  While the minivan is registered to Reza, it is Mrs. Lajani's vehicle.  The prior evening, someone stole he license plates.  She called the police but did not have time to file a report at the station.  She did e-mail the home security video of the theft.  After showing the footage to Callen and Sam, Sam kows the video is too dark for facial rec but they want to dust the van for prints.  They find one.
Deeks is having french fries for lunch – cold ones.  He doesn't trust the hospital food.  He also makes a "too soon" joke about using a microwave.  Eric and Nell are on comms – the Commander's fake room is under attack again.  Kensi and Deeks are search for the minivan but can't see it in the parking lot.  A truck on the street moves and the minivan is park in a lot across the street.  Kensi and Deeks move, noting there are a lot of innocent bystanders.
As they approach the van, the back window rolls down and the shooting begins.  Lots of shooting with some screaming from the innocent bystanders.  Kensi and Deeks fire at the minivan.  The bad guys toss out one of the own, who was hit before driving off.  Kensi calls in the minivan's damage and path so Eric can track it.
A very complimentary Eric and Nell have ID'd the dead man – Daniel Barrett.  Kensi and Deeks ask about the sudden peace in the land of Neric.  Seems Eric gets hangry.  After making his award winning tuna salad last night, Nell forgot the sandwiches at home.  Deeks teases if Kensi did that to him he'd be back on Tinder (Tess note:  that joke would work better if Kensi was going to Tinder after Deeks forget their lunch).
Barnett is an unemployed electrician with the skills to build a microwave weapon.  He also has the temperament – anger issues.  Barnett does not match the fingerprint found on the Lajani's minivan.  Deeks wants to know why Barnett would attack the Navy.  Nell looked at his social media feeds filled with anti-immigrant rants.  He could be looking for weapons to cause trouble.  Barnett made a few phone calls to a burner phone and sent cryptic text messages to another anti-immigration person, Hayden York in Pasadena.  Kensi and Deeks are on their way.
Saying they are with the Department of Water and Power, Kensi and Deeks are knocking on York's apartment door.  York's landlady, a woman named Tangerine, tells them that York moved out three days earlier.  She's looking for a light for her cigarette.  York was a loner with "lack of social skills," according to Tangerine.   He left his small apartment using a 26-foot truck from Move and Groove.  A 26-foot truck could fit the furniture from a mansion.
Back in Ops, Callen and Sam are updated by Eric and Nell on Hayden York.  He used a fake driver's license to get the moving truck.  Sam thinks of all the weapons that could fit in the moving truck while Callen wants the Navy warned about any rental trucks going to Seal Beach.  That's going to be a problem – the burner phone Barnet called was traced to a mini-mall earlier that day.  Security footage has CWO Purdue walking through the parking lot with a brand new burn phone.
Agent Castor is waiting with CWO Purdue in the boat shed's main room when Callen and Sam arrive.  Callen and Sam show Purdue photos of York and Barnett.  "Either of them look familiar?"  Purdue says neither of them work at Seal Beach.  True, but their accomplice does as Sam shows the security footage of Purdue in the parking lot.
Purdue was assured by York and Barnett that they would not hurt "Valerie", only make her unable to work one day so he could take over logistics.  Purdue explains his 27-year old son was addicted to meth last year and had no health insurance.  County rehab was terrible and the young man relapsed.  Paying for the best 90-day residential program worked for Purdue's son.  As a father he did the right thing according to Sam but with a home mortgage and a Navy salary, he needed money.  The bank said no but a loan shark said yes.  After paying half, the loan shark sold the note to a man who demanded full repayment in a week.  If Purdue didn't pay, his family would be hurt.   He could wipe out the debt if he shared the routes and delivery schedules of cruise missiles being moved that week.
It is not a security breach, according to Purdue because York, Barnett and their crew are stupid.  They can't move a cruise missile – which weighs 3,000 pounds. Plus, the missiles are surrounded by security.  Any slight deviation to the route, any problem, causes an immediate response from the Navy.  Purdue can add extra security to the convoys  Callen tells Purdue he's not getting anywhere near Seal Beach or the convoys.  "Today, or longer?" Purdue asks.  That's up to the lawyer, Sam tells him.
Moving Purdue to interrogation, Eric and Nell contact Callen and Sam.  One of the missle moving trucks was diverted through the Angeles National Forest.  Kensi and Deeks, along with the Highway Patrol, are on their way.  The person driving the missiles and the security team were suffering vertigo and nausea.  They are under attack by the same microwave set-up, an attack that damaged Seal Beach's ability to contact the drivers and security vehicles.
Arriving at the Angeles National Forest, Kensi and Deeks show Callen and Sam empty trucks – the driver and security team were jumped once they got out of their vehicles to vomit.  The missiles are gone.  A simple set of wheeled tracks makes moving the large weapons a breeze.  The minivan is near the truck with the microwave set-up inside.  "Why use a slingshot when you can use a weapon of mass destruction?" Deeks asks.
Kensi asks if the thieves could launch a cruise missile.  Sam doesn't think they have to – with a detonator, a missile could be set off near a high rise office building and cause death and destruction for 200-feet in any direction.
With their dislike for Latinos, soccer games, certain neighborhoods, downtown churches are all targets.  Anti-Islamic sentiments by the group would make mosques, Muslim civil rights organizations and Middle East consulates easy targets.  They need to track the truck before LA has its own Oklahoma City bombing situation.
With there being limited security cameras in the Forest, Eric is having trouble locating the van.  Nell found the owner of the fingerprint from the Lajani's minivan in an administrative database.  With no criminal record, Richard Matts is a commercial truck driver with a cabin ear Lytle Creek in the forest.  That's where the missiles are being stored.
The team approaches the cabin.  The moving truck is right outside.  There is only one road in and out of the cabin area.  Sam comes across a racoon that is suffering.  There are microwave signals being transmitted from the cabin.  A little out of sorts, Callen orders Kensi and Deeks to engage with the thieves but warns them of the microwave weapon.
While Kensi and Deeks are largely unaffected as they shoot it out with one of the thieves, Callen and Sam are struggling behind the cabin.  As they get closer to the cabin, Kensi and Deeks start to feel the impact of the microwaves. Callen orders Kensi and Deeks to "give them everything" - fire constantly on the cabin.   As they try – Kensi and Deeks are now suffering the effects of the attack – Callen and Sam work to get closer to the cabin.  Deeks jokes this is how his Mom probably spent the 1960's.
Seeing double, Callen takes two shots at the microwave transmitter.  It works.  With the microwave disabled, Callen and Sam take out the men behind the cabin.  The moving truck leaves the cabin, making their way to Kensi and Deeks's location.
Among their weapons, Callen finds a rocket launcher.  Sam thinks that could come in handy.
Parking the Audi in the middle of the only exit road, the truck is stuck in one location.  Sam has loaded up the rocket launcher.  Warning Kensi and Deeks to get at least 100 feet away, Sam gets ready to fire.  The  moving truck backs up, trying to ram the Audi off the road.  After Callen helpfully suggests Sam stay away from hitting the back of the moving van, Sam fires just ahead of the moving truck, causing it to run into a ditch.  The Audi got a little dinged up but the drivers are dead.
Sam does not have to render the missiles safe – the thieves never had the chance to rig the detonators.  Callen has news – Commander Torres is being released from the hospital.  CWO Purdue is being downgraded to a non-classified position and will serve weekends in the brig for a year.
Deeks is still dealing with the ringing in his ears – everyone is.  Sam says they'll be fine in 24-hours, unlike the staffers in Cuba who were under constant attack.  Deeks has a different cure.
In the bar, "Mrs. D." – Bertie – is serving popcorn to go with beers to Kensi, Callen and Sam.  Deeks is behind the bar.  She thinks it is like "Star Wars" with the team being shot by particle beams.  Callen corrects her – microwave.  She is worried she could get sick from her home microwave.  "Only if you get inside," Sam tells her.
After Deeks serves a second round of beers, Callen asks about the honeymoon plans.  Plans are made.  They are going to Peru.  "They got diseases in Peru," Roberta announces.  She's a fan of the cable show Bizarre Infections.  Peru has Zika, malaria and river blindness. Kensi promises to be careful.  Roberta wants Kensi to be extra careful – "Don't get pregnant down there.  I know the honeymooners are going to be doing it like bonobos."  She offers possible pregnancy prevention measures, much to Callen and Sam's delight.
As Bertie leaves, Callen asks Kensi and Deeks if they are visiting Machu Picchu.  They are doing a volunteer trip – building houses, digging an irrigation system, teaching English.  Compared to the rest of the world, Deeks explains, Kensi and Deeks have everything.  This is an amazing opportunity to make a difference.  The trip, however, may be on hold since the crowd at the bar that night is rather light.
Callen suggests karaoke could bring in a crowd.  Sam likes lucha libre – Mexican masked wrestling.  Deeks likes that idea.  Kensi thinks he's serious.  He's not.  Deeks doesn't want gimmicks – no trivia night, no name night.  He wants a place that feels like home.  It does to Callen – he lives there.  Feels like home to Sam but Sam lives on a boat.  Kensi toasts their bar with no name.
What head canon can be formed from here:   Not much.  This is a fine, generic episode.  A bit better than I remembered.  Outside of the honeymoon chatter and Eric and Nell's lunch issues, this episode could have run in season two or in season six with no changes to the plot and most of the important dialogue.
The episode was written by Joe Sachs who tends to have a "type" in his main male character.  CWO Purdue joins the Professor from "Higher Power", the guy who loved trains in "The Livelong Day", Jiminy Cricket actor in "Core Values", the bartender in "From Havana with Love" and the solar panel wackos in "Under Pressure" who are these mostly (not all) white, middle-age men who because of some hard times in their lives decide to color outside of the lines no matter the cost.
Purdue is more sympathetic than most – he was saving his child – but he was still profoundly wrong.
Episode number:    Episode 12 of season 10, 228 overall.

The Mosley Review: Bad Times at the El Royale
Tumblr media
Its one of the oldest story and plot devices in film history and somehow it still stays fresh. Take a small number of characters and place them in a motel or hotel inn, none of them know each other and all of their secrets get revealed in a twisted number of events. I love those type of mystery thrillers because they end up being the most fun, violent and amazing. This film takes that premise and adds its own fun spin on it and I enjoyed every bit. The pacing of the story was great and the amount of intrigue behind each character was genuine and I cared for them all. The film had a touch of Tarantino esque story structure and I thought that was great. There were moments that I predicted, but I was actually surprised for the majority of the story.
Tumblr media
The cast in the film was truly a talented group that were having the most fun. Thanks to this film, I have become a fan of Cynthia Erivo. As Darlene Sweet, she was outstanding and all of her talents are on display. She nailed the more emotional moments and her characters' evolution by the films' end was truly earned. Jeff Bridges was great as Father Daniel Flynn and he has a number of great moments of vulnerability. The chemistry between him and Darlene was fun. Jon Hamm was stellar as always as Laramie Seymour Sullivan and once his secret was revealed, it moved the story to the next level. Dakota Johnson gives an excellent performance as Emily Summerspring and I thought her sister in the film Rose, played by newcomer Cailee Spaeny, was equally excellent. Lewis Pullman was fantastic as Miles Miller and I loved that he was pivotal to the much darker secrets of the El Royale. Chris Hemsworth has shown his comedic side before and as Billy Lee, he brings together his natural charm, comedic timing and intimidating nature to make a new memorable character. Aside from his fun and weird gyrating, it was great to see him play a villain and I found it ironic that he was a cult leader given the his huge fan base.
Tumblr media
Since the film was set in 1970, I expected an impressive soundtrack and I was not disappointed. The score Michael Giacchino was great and thrilling as the story started getting to its tension filled peaks. On another note of music, Cynthia Erivo sang almost all of her songs acapella in the film and her voice had so much passion and soul that it was truly intoxicating. As far as location mystery thrillers go, this was a good and fun film that has many characters that you'll like. I really did like this film and its worth checking out in theaters, but if you miss it then I would put this at the top of a Netflix rental.

January 12: Happy Birthday Kirstie Alley and Luise Rainer
January 12: Happy Birthday Kirstie Alley and Luise Rainer
Kirstie Alley turns 66 today.  She worked for several years as an interior designer before being cast in her first acting role, as Lt.
