Pt 2 of gifs from the Here Come the Brides episode “Mr. and Mrs. J Bolt”. Prospective bride Peggy (Mary Jo Deschanel) has written her uncle saying she’s married to Joshua Bolt (David Soul). She did this because, although she wanted to go to Seattle, she didn’t have his consent to make the trip. As a minor, her uncle is still her legal guardian.
Now he's coming to visit and will surely find out she lied and take her home. Unless...
Joshua and Peggy pretend to be married while he’s in town.
A weaselly, schemer of a man who already squandered her inheritance, Uncle Jebediah is all too happy to hear Peggy married into a family with a flourishing business. He attempts to squeeze his way into the Bolts’ logging operation, threatening to sue them for taking Peggy to Seattle without his consent if they don’t agree to cut him in.
Things get infinitely worse when word of the fake marriage spreads first, to Captain Clancey and, via him, Aaron Stempel.
With the prospect of losing their business and Peggy being forced back into her abusive uncle’s custody looming, Josh and Peggy elope.
In the end, they’re able to send Jebediah away, save their business (and Peggy’s freedom) without she or Josh having to get married. Not realizing they only got a marriage license but didn’t actually go through with the wedding, he leaves.
Peggy keeps the license because it’s good for a year and she might need it.

Your Twin Peaks fun fact of the day
Day #12
Lots of actors in Twin Peaks have some sort of connection to each other, to others actors, or had worked with Lynch before Twin Peaks.
Here are some examples:

There's also Stephen Gyllenhaal who directed episode 27 who is Jake and Maggie's Gyllenhaal father.
There's also some Twin Peaks actors whose children are now famous. Such as Peggy Lipton, who played Norma Jennings, her daughter is actress Rashida Jones, her father is legendary music producer Quincy Jones. Mary Jo Deschanel, who played Eileen Hayward, is the wife of Caleb Deschanel, who directed three Twin Peaks episodes. Their daughters are Zooey and Emily Deschanel. There's also Russ Tamblyn, who played Dr. Jacoby, he' the father of Amber Tamblyn.
Eric Da Re, who played Leo Johnson, is the son of Twin Peaks casting director Johanna Ray.
Robyn Lively, who played Lana Budding Mildford, is the half-sister of Blake Lively.

I just remembered the one time I tried to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, it was because I’d seen it on Mary Jo Deschanel’s IMDb credit list but the first five minutes struck me as…. Just so weird.

Betty: Sal, I won’t ask again-- Open the pod bay doors, please.
Sal 9000: Terribly sorry, Betty, but I’m unable to do that.
An alternate universe interpretation of Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Schultz and Sal 9000. I might add more later; however, I wanted to share a little of what I’ve been working on for the last month.
Image description: a drawing done by mere_vanilla of Betty Schultz and Sal 9000, characters from the novel 2010: Odyssey Two, in what the artist imagines as a mirror to the self-same scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey wherein Dave implores Hal to open the pod bay doors, please. Betty has her black hair pulled back into a bun, and is wearing light blue eyeshadow and coral lipstick. She is in a blue space suit without a helmet, and is lightly modeled after her actor, Mary Jo Deschanel. Sal has a blue lens and a red nameplate. The color is sketched on in watercolor pencil, leaving room for highlights and negative space. End image description.

Oh yeah I realized yesterday so like there’s oddly a few Twin Peaks connections in The Right Stuff including work by Caleb Deschanel who directed a few Twin Peaks eps who did cinematography for The Right Stuff and like it really explains why some parts of The Right Stuff feel like experimental film and why shit starts to just get Weird at times. And then his wife Mary Jo Deschanel, who plays Eileen Hayward in TP, plays Annie Glenn in The Right Stuff.
One of the Twin Peaks connections is the actor Royal Dano who played the judge in Twin Peaks (who rolls up to town in a Winnebago and I really get a kick out of him lmao) who in The Right Stuff plays essentially the personification of death who sings a bunch of funeral dirges and when researching him I realized I had heard his name before. He was the actor who provided the voice for Lincoln in Great Moments with Mr Lincoln which was first at the 1964 New York world’s fair and later moved to Disneyland. Walt Disney personally requested him because he wanted a Lincoln who appeared (according to Defunctland) broken down by the war, sad, exhausted, and rather than ask for that performance Disney quote “decided to break him himself.”
Anyway I just thought all that was interesting. The Right Stuff was put out in 1983 so a lot of the experimental stuff was more subtle and yet some of the visual effects were kind of groundbreaking and you see them used decades later, and I think the fact that it did get experimental, heady, and borderline surreal at times was part of a baseline that allowed Twin Peaks to get as experimental and fucked up as it did.

Sam Shepard in The Right Stuff (Philip Kaufman, 1983)
Cast: Sam Shepard, Fred Ward, Dennis Quaid, Ed Harris, Scott Glenn, Lance Henriksen, Scott Paulin, Barbara Hershey, Veronica Cartwright, Jane Dornacker, Kim Stanley, Pamela Reed, Donald Moffat, Levon Helm, Mary Jo Deschanel, Jeff Goldblum, Harry Shearer, Scott Wilson, Kathy Baker. Screenplay: Philip Kaufman, based on a book by Tom Wolfe. Cinematography: Caleb Deschanel. Production design: Geoffrey Kirkland. Film editing: Glenn Farr, Lisa Fruchtman, Tom Rolf, Stephen A. Rotter, Douglas Stewart. Music: Bill Conti.
With its brightly irreverent attitude toward subject matter that typically brought out pious patriotism in Americans, d MoffaThe Right Stuff feels more like a film of the 1970s than of the Reagan '80s, which may be why it was a box-office disappointment. It remains true that some of the parts of the film -- the caricatures of the German scientists, the publicists, the press, and politicians like Lyndon Johnson (Donald Moffat) -- don't fit snugly with the genuine heroism shown by the astronauts and test pilot. But that's because writer-director Philip Kaufman dared to assume a point of view on the material that was fresh and unconventional -- a rarity in American film of the '80s. Some of the tone of the film can be found in its source, Tom Wolfe's book, which was designed as a corrective to the "official story" of the Mercury 7 that was provided by Life magazine. Instead of squeaky clean superbeings devoted to wife and family, the astronauts were just human beings, frequently raunchy, irreverent, and more than a little inclined to step out of marital bounds. The film's great glory is its all-star cast (though few of the actors in it were stars before it was made), with particularly good work coming from Sam Shepard, who received a supporting actor Oscar nomination as Chuck Yeager, the test pilot that the astronauts wanted to be, even as NASA and the scientists wanted them just to be glorified lab rats, plus Scott Glenn as Alan Shepard, Ed Harris as John Glenn, Dennis Quaid as Gordon Cooper, and Fred Ward as Gus Grissom. There is similar strength in the female cast, particularly Barbara Hershey as Glennis Yeager, Veronica Cartwright as Betty Grissom, Pamela Reed as Trudy Cooper, and Mary Jo Deschanel as the publicity-shy Annie Glenn, whose embarrassment at her stammer leads to a wonderfully satisfying standoff against an increasingly irate LBJ -- a man whose whims were seldom ignored. Deschanel's husband, Caleb, is the film's cinematographer. (Yes, they are the parents of Zooey Deschanel.) The movie was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four: for sound, film editing, sound effects editing, and Bill Conti's score.

Combien vaut Will Ferrell ? Imaginez « Elf » sans Will Ferrell ! Pourquoi Will Ferrell a-t-il refusé Elf 2 ?
