Cyclonis and the Cyclonian Royal Family
Aka I gave this girl a family and then had to figure out why so many of them are absent from the show. This was the second most popular option in that poll I posted, so here we go.
I headcanon Cyclonia to be a matriarchy. Every ruler of the Empire since its founding has been a woman, with rare exceptions when the men take the position of regents for one reason or another. Even if the firstborn of a generation is a boy, they will never have a claim to the throne.
Queen Alyka Prosperis was the second ruler of Cyclonia after its founding as a kingdom. She was gifted the throne by First Queen Marinia, as they were close friends prior to Marinia's death. Since then Alyka's descendants have ruled Cyclonia and its expanding empire in one of the longest-running bloodlines in recorded history. No one is entirely sure who her partner was, who helped father the bloodline.
Master Polaris is a black mark on the royal family's history. Many say she cursed all the men in her family to take the form of monsters, in a fit of jealousy towards her brother Hemlock. Ever since then, the men of Cyclonia's royal family have been sickly and weak.
Cyclonis's great-grandmother is Master Roburis. Originally the youngest of four sisters, Roburis was not expected to rise to power. Then a plague hit Cyclonia, devastating the royal family and leaving her as the last survivor of her sisters. She wasn't a particularly attentive mother to her daughter, Morrigan, and some sources say she's the one to blame for instigating war with the Free Atmos, only to palm off the fallout onto the next generation.
Empress Morrigan Anarchis started her reign with the goal of doing better than her mother. Instead, she lead Cyclonia into a 50 year war that didn't end with her death, and repeated history by handing it off to Cyclonis. There are rumours that she orchestrated the assassination of her own husband and let the Sky Knights take blame for it in an incident that almost killed her only child, Cyclamen. She wasn't particularly popular as a ruler when she died, in fact it was no secret that the public greatly favoured Dark Ace over her.
Delphinium Cyclonis was seen as a symbol of hope for Cyclonia. A chance to finally end the war one way or another, but unfortunately she proved to be just as bullheaded as her grandmother. More concerned with learning new magical secrets and accessing the far side than actually ruling her Empire, it all ended in disaster after Cyclonia Rising. Now her brothers Larkspur and Cardin (Cardin largely belongs to @ashe-alter, thank you for helping me figure out these brothers :3) are struggling to pick up the pieces.

I finally finished my redesigns for the Storm Hawks Villains! Same sort of deal as my previous ones, giving them a bit more of a uniform with modified flight suits (except for Cyclonis, of course). Also aged everyone up here as well, I think at the very least the Dark Ace should be older, maybe early 40s? ANYWAY these designs are entirely self indulgent and give me something a bit more fun to do for fan art and redraws that lend my style better. I do still enjoy the originals, I promise <3 Maybe I'll do some screenshot redraws next? Who knows

Master Cyclonis
She doesn't believe it at first but is honestly caught off guard because of it. The fact that they said no though really offends her. She'll leave them be for a time, mostly to process it herself. Then she will be back with a vengeance.
Dark Ace
Hes angry but he hides it the best. Cause mostly hes just upset. He has trouble connecting with people. So them saying no hurts him a lot. He'd just fall even further into his work and probally ignore them if it's someone hes supposed to be working with.
Snipe
Oh you thought he was asking you? Of course not haha just a joke. At least that's what he said. But really hes embarrassed and he definetly doesn't want Ravess to find out about it. He'd never live it down.
Ravess
Shes going to take this out on the next mission that's for sure. For the next few weeks shes mostly going to avoid everyone while she plays and works out her emotions. She doesn't handle rejection well but at this point she is used to it. She'll give them the cold shoulder for awhile afterwards

So, I’ve given some thought to the cyclonian advisor OC, Ross Alba, and came up with some backstory. Ross grew up in a normal cyclonian household and grew up surrounded by pro-war propaganda, thus he enlisted and became a talon. A few years later after showing exemplary service, he managed to become the adjutant to the commander of a battalion of Talons. Unfortunately, the entire battalion except for Ross was wiped out by a storm hawk squadron while they were regrouping on a neutral terra. This caused Ross to have a crisis and spend the next ten years or so traveling and educating himself on politics, economic, crystal magic, technology, really anything and everything. Eventually, he came to the conclusion that Cyclonia must be demilitarized and stop expanding lest the empire meet a horrible end from war or from the empire spreading itself too thin. Thus, he began his career in politics, serving as an advisor for various governors of Cyclonian Terras, all while building up alliances and finding like minded individuals who want to end the war- not out of any love for the free Terras but out of a dedication to Cyclonia. Over his career, he help make critical reforms to various Terras all while ruthlessly eliminating his enemies through cutthroat political maneuvering and manipulation. Eventually it seemed like peace for Cyclonia was feasible, however this was when the storm hawks tried to fight against Cyclonia’s forces. Naturally, this lead to even more war much to Ross’s endless frustration. Thankfully, Master Anarchis died and Cyclonis took the throne.
That's quite the career he's had and lots of build up to the main story. Very cool.

Backstory: Born to a lower-class family that lived in the countryside of Rex, Alex always helped her family with what she could, even though she didn't agree with them about the fact that the Rex Guardians were so reliable and protective, as she knew that at some point something was going to happen. Even going through financial difficulties, she always helped
Unfortunately, with a flu outbreak. Many middle and lower class citizens were infected and had no access to healing, causing high unemployment and mortality rates on Earth. This also affected Alex's family, who unfortunately died because they didn't get the cure in time (since the cure was expensive and it went to the upper class more easily since they had enough money to buy it for them).
Alex was desperate, her family was gone and she couldn't pay all the bills and debts she had, she even asked for help with a member of the Rex Guardians (Not Harrier) but he was super rude with her and refused to help. She fled Terra Rex and went through several until finally settling in Cyclonia where she ended up becoming a talon until she got the position of first lieutenant, having more contact with the commanders and Master Cyclonis.

- She has 12 piercings on his face + 11 on his right ear + 4 on his left ear

Theory time again!
Okay more like AU thoughts that if you did it right could still follow canon and make for a huge twist.
Lightning Strike and The Dark Ace are actually the same person.
Now before you say "no that's not possible they look nothing alike in the flash back." Or "that's not right, he was like 16 and tiny" or "Aerrow is Lightning's son this isn't possible." Bare with me. I have explanations.
First and foremost being this scene right here. It never happened. This is Aerrow's narration of what happened to Lightning Strike and the original storm hawks. He is 14 and was not there, he is an unreliable narrator. He is repeating what he's been told happened that day.
Aerrow would have been 4 and he had no idea he was related to Lightning. And they never said Aerrow was Lightning's son. The show says Last "Descendant" of the original storm hawks. Later changed to specifically Lightning Strike. Descendants aren't always directly related.
So Aerrow takes this knowledge and weaves together the scene in his head. Lightning has the generic idealized skyknight build. The dorito body. Actually very similar to Carver, the skyknight that the team idolized before meeting him. Aerrow's been told hes a descendant so Lightning gets red spikey hair like him.
He's been told that Lightning was betrayed by his co-pilot. The assumption being a co-pilot is younger, smaller and inexperienced. Also, he's been told that Dark Ace killed the old team so logically we get a much smaller and younger Dark Ace.
Now what if all of that was made up by the council to hide the truth. That golden boy Lightning Strike, the greatest skyknight to have ever lived, betrayed all of Atmos. They tell the public that his nobody co-pilot betrayed him, struck him from behind and then used a powerful crystal to wipe out the rest of the team and cripple the other squadrons. He later became the Dark Ace.
At least that's the story
He didn't kill Lightning with his own sword. He is Lightning, that's his sword to begin with.
And if you want to follow the idea that the daggers were his then how did they end up on the condor?
Also here are Aerrow's daggers. They weren't a matched set like how he wields them but two separate weapons for two separate members of the team.
I don't have any motivations at the moment but we were never given any motivations for a betrayal to begin with. And Carver's reasoning was "...see which way the wind is blowing. The future is master Cyclonis." That's all we're given.
What do you Y'all think. Is Dark Ace actually Lightning Strike and the betrayal story a cover up?

This is Maveth, one of many kids of one of my Cyclonian families. Her Catalyst core is located in her chest, back and as shown in the reference, along her wrist.
I've been working on her for awhile and I am pleased with how it worked out. She was the last one I needed to do and this challenge just gave me an excuse.

🌋: How bad is their temper? Is it a slow boil, or an instant explosion?
Surprisingly it's a slow boil. He's more likely to get annoyed at something or someone before he's out right angry.
There is a flash point though. And once that point has been hit I would suggest running away. Quickly.
💗: If they have a crush is it noticable? What changes when they're in love?
No, it's not noticeable.
👁: what color are there eyes? Do people notice their eyes? Is there anything special about them? (Shows emotion easily, literally magical)
His eyes are red, obviously, and yes people tend to notice as its unusual but also because he tends to have a pretty intense look on his face.
But don't worry, he's not planning murder. He just can't fucking see. Mans very farsighted, which is great for skybattle. Not so much for paperwork.
His eyes also will glow slightly after battle from using crystals. Itll fade in a few hours.
🌏: Will they give up the world for someone they love? Is this decision easy for them?
Wow, hitting me with a tough one.
I don't think he would. I think while he would never abandon someone he loved. If it was them or watch the world burn he'd pick the world. It's a difficult decision though. And not one he makes lightly.

He's surprisingly good with kids. Especially little ones.
