Oh, what's this that you've found, Flat Freire? Why, if isn't the Disability Resources office here at CWRU! What an interesting find, and an important one, too. All around the world, students deal with all sorts of things, from something as simple as the struggle of focusing all the way to being entirely unable to move on their own. Though the last example may be extreme, I knew someone in a similar situation back at my high school, and he was one of the brightest kids in his class. Having an office dedicated to helping those who need it and accommodating their learning environment to best tailor it to their needs ensures that students of all walks of life can have access to the education they deserve.
And believe me, such measures help. As is stated within Public Law 105-17, Congress found that before the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, 1/2 of all children with disabilities were unable to receive services that would give them full equality and opportunity in school and many were enrolled in regular programmes that did not account for their disability because they were undiagnosed. With the passage of Public Laws 94-142, 105-75, and subsequent laws, education in the US has become more equal and accommodating to those who need the extra help, no matter the degree. On the US Department of Education website ( https://sites.ed.gov/idea/IDEA-History ), they mention that the country went from excluding 1.8 million from public school due to disabilities to providing assistance to more than 8 million, a major leap forward. Such numbers are important, because people with disabilities are no less intelligent than the average person, and everyone needs an environment that maximizes learning. When that environment is reached, there is no limit to what one can learn. -- SG

Consultant, Paediatric Neurology, Motherhood Chaitanya Hospital
“I introduce myself as Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Motherhood Chaitanya Hospital, Chandigarh. I have done my basic paediatric post graduate (DCH) training from MGM Medical College, Indore & GMSH (DNB). This was followed by senior residency at GMCH Sector 32, Chandigarh & ESIC Model Hospital & Research work at PGIMER. I developed a keen interest in paediatric neurology & was likely to complete paediatric neurology & epilepsy fellowship under Dr.Vrajesh Udani one of the doctors in this field at P.D National Hospital & MRC Mumbai. During my fellowship I got to manage wide spectrum of patients suffering from neurological disorders at Hinduja, Breach Candy &Saiffee Hospitals, Mumbai.I have also trained at university hospitals, CWRU Cleveland where I successfully completed epilepsy & Neurophysiology course under Dr. Hans luders, a world renowned Epileptologist.”

Fixing Rogue Brain Cells May Hold Key to Preventing Neurodegeneration - Technology Org
A team led by scientists at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has identified a new therapeutic approach for combating neurodegenerative diseases, offering hope of improved treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Vanishing White Matter disease and multiple sclerosis, among others.

Neurodegenerative diseases, which affect millions of people worldwide, occur when nerve cells in the brain or nervous system lose function over time and ultimately die, according to the National Institutes of Health. Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease are the most common.
The research team’s new study, published online in Nature Neuroscience, focused on astrocytes—the brain’s most abundant cells that normally support healthy brain function. Growing evidence indicates astrocytes can switch to a harmful state that increases nerve-cell loss in neurodegenerative diseases.
The researchers created a new cellular technique to test thousands of possible medications for their ability to prevent these rogue astrocytes from forming.
“By harnessing the power of high-throughput drug screening, we’ve identified a key protein regulator that, when inhibited, can prevent the formation of harmful astrocytes,” said Benjamin Clayton, lead author and National Multiple Sclerosis Society career transition fellow in the laboratory of Paul Tesar at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.
They found that blocking the activity of a particular protein, HDAC3, may prevent the development of dangerous astrocytes. The scientists discovered that by administering medications that specifically target HDAC3, they were able to prevent the development of dangerous astrocytes and significantly increase the survival of nerve cells in mouse models.
“This research establishes a platform for discovering therapies to control diseased astrocytes and highlights the therapeutic potential of regulating astrocyte states to treat neurodegenerative diseases,” said Tesar, the Dr. Donald and Ruth Weber Goodman Professor of Innovative Therapeutics and the study’s principal investigator.
Tesar, also director of the School of Medicine’s Institute for Glial Sciences, said more research needs to be done before patients might benefit from the promising approach. But, he said, their findings could lead to the creation of novel therapies that disarm harmful astrocytes and support neuroprotection—perhaps improving the lives of people with neurodegenerative illnesses in the future.
“Therapies for neurodegenerative disease typically target the nerve cells directly,” Tesar said, “but here we asked if fixing the damaging effects of astrocytes could provide therapeutic benefit. Our findings redefine the landscape of neurodegenerative disease treatment and open the door to a new era of astrocyte targeting medicines.”

Harcourt House (Zerbe/Halle Mansion, now CWRU President's House)
2163 Harcourt Dr.
Cleveland Heights, OH 44106
Harcourt House at 2163 Harcourt Drive, previously known as the Zerbe/Halle Mansion, has been the official residence of presidents of Case Western Reserve University since 1988. The house, built in 1906, among the first dozen or so houses in the neighborhood, in Ambler Heights, in what is now Cleveland Heights, had a fascinating history prior to its current role.  It was first known as the Zerbe House, then as the Zerbe/Halle House, then Halle House, and now Harcourt House.  The house was designed by architect Abram Garfield (1872-1958). Garfield was a prominent Cleveland architect and the youngest son of President James Garfield, who was assassinated when Abram was eight-years old.
Harcourt House was built as the home of Ohio and Pennsylvania Coal Company president Jerome Zerbe Sr. and his young family.   In 1916, the Zerbe House was sold to the Samuel Halle Family. The Zerbes may have sold a part of the property before this time, as the lot of J.B. Zerbe appears much larger in a 1912 map than in a map from 1927–1937.  In 1916, the Halle family moved from Overlook Drive across Cedar to Ambler Heights. Many Cleveland mansions are called by the names of their original owners, but as the Zerbes lived at 2163 Harcourt Drive for 10 years, and the Halles lived in the home for almost four decades, the house was called the Zerbe/Halle house or, more often, the Halle house.
In late February of 1955, a three-day estate sale was held at the Harcourt House, and hundreds thronged through the old 20-room mansion. The sale was expected to net around $8,000,  according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Feb. 27, 1955.  Later that year, the house was purchased by Raymond F. Essick of Century Concessions for about $30,000. Raymond and Lois Essick and their children, Richard, age 15, and Shari, age 13, moved in.  Franklin and Rita Paskert Walter and their seven children followed the Essick family as residents at 2163 Harcourt Drive. The older two girls, Rita and Carol, were ages 24 and 22 when the family moved in, but the other five were ages 14 and younger.  Walter Wellington “Deke” Somers Jr. (1921–1987) was a widower with adult sons when he bought Harcourt House in 1978.  Then Case Western Reserve University bought Harcourt House in 1987.

AHHHHHH I have so much to do and so little time. My father will not do my CSS profile despite me freaking out and asking him to do it bc I want to get my result from CWRU on the day I’m supposed to even though I like 100% got rejected. Ugh but the fact that they’re asking for it made my mom say I prob got an interview even though I def didn’t and that’s like giving me false hope. I don’t want to deal w disappointment again so soon I alrdy cried over Rochester bc I was freaking out that I won’t get in anywhere 😭😭😭 and I have to do my court cases project and solo and ensemble is on Saturday and I have to practice singing for my class on Sunday and current events project due Monday and SSA due feb 1st and like every decision I care abt besides the Ivy ones are coming out next week/ in the coming weeks and I have to figure out wtf is going on with the uv might trying and do MATH bc we have to have all the info by Monday so we can get our video ready and we’re getting assigned seats in ipr which means I can’t sit next to my new #bestie who GHOSTED me for literally no reason omfg I can’t be making enemies this soon to the end of the school year not when I have sixty billion other things. I also have smth else on Sunday I forget what it is tho. It’s important I think. AND MY BAND DRESS DOESNT FIT ANYMORE SO IDK WHAT IM GOING TO WEAR ON SAT. Maybe if I like don’t eat breakfast it’ll fit?? Ugh why didn’t I get a size up why did I think I’d stay at that size for the rest of my life like my chest wasn’t done growing yet what was wrong with me. I’ll have to wear a ficking compression top underneath just to get it to fit probably god why did my **** get bigger without my consent and I’m turning 18 soon except my vote doesn’t matter at all bc I love in the reddest of red states and my relatively liberal city couldn’t even elect more than One democrat to our city council. I need to find black dress pants and think about a prom dress and figure out how to be a normal conversationalist soon bc at lunch today this girl was like trying to engage in conversation with me but I had no idea what to say to continue it!!! And it was fine but I sounded uninterested and she’s nice and she showed me prom dress pics on her phone ugh. This is turning into the type of rant I used to post on my spam cf so small that no one could read it with like a crazy girl song (but incredibly basic bc I have no music taste) in the background but tbh this is more cathartic. And all I did today was pick my brother up go to subway and sit at work for 20 mins bc my studnet didn’t even show up. Oh well easy $15 I guess. I def could’ve gotten things done but I just. Didn’t. There are other things due soon as well I believe oh I was forgetting abt the calc project. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahxhdijsiwndjclwnfodjdjdnfjffn
