Some rather dated looking screenshots from the 1996/1997 Saturn port of the Flair Software title.
Whizz / アクピョン・ゲーム ウィ
The added CGI intros weren’t pretty and the PAL release date isn’t confirmed on Saturn, most sources reference the official UK Sega Saturn magazine. Whom were never sent a review copy by Konami and so didn’t review it to late 1997, when they purchased a copy. The game itself, has a 1996 copyright, it uses the early cardboard PAL box design, so it’s likely around late 1996 to early 1997. SNES version was reviewed in the October 1996 edition of the magazine CVG.

RIP Blockbuster Video
I thought I would use this opportunity to to say goodbye to a much loved franchise which as a child gave me hundreds if not thousands of hours worth of entertainment. The franchise is of course Blockbuster Video, which was a staple part of my childhood growing up.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned in an earlier blog my local Blockbuster was several miles away from my house and so either a lift in my parents car or an hours bus journey was needed in order to partake in its many delights. But before I begin to wax lyrical about the good old days let’s take it back a few years.
In the late 80’s my nearest video store was a small Jack Beanstalk Video which was located on Market Street in my home town. Being only a twenty minute walk from my house this was the perfect place on a weekend to rent cheap movies especially seeing as we didn't yet have Sky TV. I remember some of my favourite VHS titles of the time included the numerous Ernest movies (especially Ernest Saves Christmas which I would rent many times over), the Monster Squad and the Simpsons compilation videos. The shop might have been on the basic side and the number of films limited but my family and I would spend many happy weekends choosing films plus the mandatory sweets to accompany our Saturday nights entertainment from the small tuck shop area.
It was early 1991 when things took a dramatic change, our local Jack Beanstalk began renting video games. This was so amazing. Being a poor thirteen year old with only limited pocket money was no fun when it came to video games. Now for only a couple of pounds I could rent brand new Sega Mega Drive games, and rent I did. Me and my friend Rob must have gone through every title which that shop had to offer and throughout the next year we got to experience a wide range of fantastic games.
Things moved on and by the Summer of 1992 I was a proud owner of a Super Nintendo. It was whilst reading an issue of CVG magazine that I came across an article which stated Blockbuster Video had started to rent SNES games in the UK. Without repeating myself from a previous blog later that day I found myself stood in a recently opened Blockbuster Video. To say the store was impressive was an understatement. This was the Toys R Us of video stores. Compared to my local Jack Beanstalk this place was gigantic. There were shelves upon shelves packed with VHS tapes from floor to ceiling. Instead of three or four copies of each film which I was used to there were several rows of each title. The snack section resembled a cinema food court with fully working popcorn and Mr Slushy machines. The whole store had an energetic buzz about it, and each visit felt like an event which I would look forward to all week.
Tumblr media
Of course I wasn’t there to peruse the films or buy popcorn I was there to rent a Super Nintendo game. Finding the games wasn’t hard, turns out there was a whole section dedicated to video games, very exciting for a young teenager at the time. My final choice that afternoon was Zelda: A Link to the Past which would ignite my love for the series from that day forth.
Over the next few years I would often make the long pilgrimage to this Blockbuster store renting such titles as Dead Dance, the Lost Vikings, Rock n Roll racing and Pocky and Rocky 2. On more than one occasion I would go back the following weekend and re-rent the same game hoping my saved data hadn’t been deleted.
With each rental costing only a few quid this was the perfect excuse for me and my friends to try games which we wouldn’t normally play. As most SNES titles often came with a hefty price tag it was only through renting that I played the likes of Ranma 1/2 Part 2 and the Mystical Ninja. And let’s not forget about the wealth of arcade machines which always stood in the entrance waiting to tempt any kid on the way out.
If memory serves me correct it would have been around 1995 when I rented my final SNES game before moving onto the PlayStation. For some reason I don’t remember ever really renting anymore games after that point. Maybe it was due to the fact I was getting older and had less time to play as many games? I would of course continue to rent movies all the way up until it’s demise but for me Blockbusters glory days will always be back in the early to mid 90’s.
I’ll never forget that excitement of walking into a store, being met by the smell of fresh popcorn and scanning the shelves for a new Super Nintendo game knowing I had 48 hours of pure uninterrupted fun ahead. The same can be said for physically renting a movie. In 2019 we are spoilt for choice with streaming services such as Netflix but that experience of spending a good half hour choosing a new movie before loading up with snacks then heading home to bunker down for the evening will never be matched in my opinion.
Unfortunately those days are long gone (unless your lucky enough to live in Oregon where the last functioning Blockbuster still operates). My last visit to a Blockbuster store was back in October 2013 when the company was in its final weeks of business. With only days to go before closing it’s doors forever the store was having a last minute sale, everything must go! Most of the shelves had been stripped bare, the DVD’s had all sold, the popcorn machine empty and the fridges turned off. I remember purchasing a couple of Skylander figures at £3 each and talking to the staff who were generally heartbroken at the closure of this once great organisation. It truly was a sad time and unfortunately a few years later this exact episode would repeat itself with my final Toys R Us visit, it truly felt like a piece of my childhood had died that day.
Blockbuster Video might no longer with us but I will always have those happy nostalgic memories of being a kid back the 90’s, using my pocket money to rent video games and spending my weekends having hours of fun with my friends. Thank you Blockbuster for helping this happen.

Far be it to not take advantage of Oona’s pre-wedding events to not make it about me. OK?
Remember.  It’s all about MOI!!!!
Anyway, last weekend I flew to Cincinnati for Oona’s Bridal Shower.  You saw a sneak peak at my last blog post but I’m gonna elaborate more on the weekend.
And boy was this a fantastic Bridal Brunch!!
As the Mother-of-the-Bride naturally.
Number 4 is the only one Oona has stressed.  I did that at her shower when we all introduced ourselves.  My sense of humor got the best of me as I introduced myself as “…..as Oona exited my Origin of the World…”  immediately, I was pulled aside and warned in a kind way to NOT say anything like that at the wedding.  (shhhh–don’t tell but I don’t follow rules!)
I took Friday off from work because I wanted a true three-day weekend.  That’s the thing about working in a low-level clerical position—you need permission to get a day off.  In my other places of employment, it was much easier to finagle time off as a freebie—trust me.   I also worked my schedule out to accommodate leaving early on Thursday afternoon so I could fly from Philly to Cincy and enjoy a few extra hours of fun time.
I also took Friday casual to Thursday!  I travel in comfort, but not like a slob! J. Crew and Gabor wigs assisted me!  Mother-of-the Bride travel attire!
It’s not how it started out though.
For some reason, either I hit horrific weather or I have a displeasure of a delayed flight whenever I travel.  I kid you not.  And about 45 minutes before we were to board the plane, an announcement was made that the flight to Cincinnati would be delayed.
Welcome to my jet-sit world.  I spend more time waiting than flying!  I have to say though, that Delta made every effort and boarded us very quickly when the plane arrived!
Besides having an inner hissy-fit, I dealt with this issue by stress eating not one pretzel, but an additional bucket of pretzel nuggets.  Fresh and hot off the press.  The carbs were murder on my gut but felt so good going down.  I also ate a giant bag of peanut M & M’s.  And read trashy magazines.
And an added surprise was that these nuggets of carbs were also drenched in greasy melted butter.  I wonder why the scale isn’t giving me nicer numbers!!
The plane finally arrived and this Mother-of-the-Bride landed after ten in the evening to rain!  I was two for two.  A delay and rain.  It was shocking that a snow storm hadn’t hit!
Cincinnati here I come…
To rain and a delayed flight….
Now…upon departing the flight, one would think I ran to the airport exit to see Oona and Sam.  No.  CVG is a GREAT airport.  It’s so clean and spacious so I couldn’t resist dawdling (now we know where my son, Roman, acquired the gift of dawdle…).  I came across a cosmetics vending machine!  But I didn’t buy anything!
Why couldn’t I find this at Philly airport during the delay?
Then I came across my favorite part of the airport!  Them bones!
Some stop to smell the roses.  I stop to take photos at airports of skeletal treasure!
But it was great to be back at Oona and Sam’s and playing around with my grand puppy, Gracie.
My boo, Gracie.  OMG. She’s so well-behaved..
Oona and Sam are such great doggie parents…I KNOW they will be fantastic human parents!
Friday brought sun and clouds and brisk weather but it didn’t matter.  There’s something comforting in knowing that your daughter and her future husband can brew a great cuppa coffee.  They make it strong—just the way I love it.  And we sat around gabbing before getting ready and heading out to run errands.
The Mr. Coffee is far better than the grandpa Mr. Coffee we have at home.
Even little Gracie was beggin’ for some!
Ahhhhhhhhh…cawfee!!!
Oona had a nail appointment, and since my nails were looking fine, I passed but kept her company while we discussed family and the wedding preparations.
This freakin’ nail salon!  It went on for days!  I was jealous–but then Oona told me the price of a mani-pedi and I was glad to be living in the Northeast where nail salons are plentiful….and far less expensive!
Next stop was Marshalls –Oona picked some workout clothing (I didn’t –I’m lazy).  And I headed for the cosmetics.  Glory be to Gawd—I found two great eyeshadow palettes!
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
More on these palettes for my next blog post but boy….at $7.99 each, these palettes were a steal!
We did some food shopping—Sam’s birthday was Friday and his family was coming over for dinner.  Oona looked pensive as she realized time was of the essence—she had to head back to the airport to pick up her best friend and maid-of-honor, Lauren.
Did I say food shopping? I sent this pic to Bonaparte to validate that Pennsylvania is the worst state in the USA because of the State-run, Mob-type Liquor stores!  You can by this at Trader Joes in Cincy!
And that’s where mom comes in—I assured her I could take care of the cake and she could head to the airport for alone time with her bestie!
BTW, this cake is gluten-free, chemical and preservative-free, sugar free, and lower-fat!  Oona added Sam’s favorite candy–Reeses Pieces which are NOT lower fat nor sugar free!  But it was a tasty Birthday cake!
Friday evening, Sam’s family came over for a birthday celebration. Being with Sam’s family is like being with……………. family!!  We all had a great time and I was introduced to a spectacular aperitif/cocktail:  The Aperol Spritz!  This concoction of Aperol, Prosecco, and Seltzer with a slice of orange is the most refreshing drink I’ve ever downed!
You read it first.  Moving forward, the Aperol Spritz will now be called “Mother-of-the-Bride”.   There will be an open bar at the wedding but I may smuggle my private makings!  There’s only 148 calories in one of these!
I drank a lot of them during the weekend.  In fact, as I write this now, I informed the Frenchman that I’ll be stopping at the store for Aperol, Prosecco and seltzer!  He is a bit upset that I am forgoing the beloved Kir Royal but the Aperol Spritz has less calories and with the wedding countdown, every calorie counts!
Saturday was a full day!
Let me tell you something.  Oona and Lauren spent a long time getting their hair perfectly coifed.  Lauren is great with styling and she styled Oona’s hair in perfect beach waves.
I plopped my Jamison wig on—and had extra time to loll around in bed! Oh, the beauty of wigs!
Jamison and Lilly Pulitzer.  You can’t go wrong!
The shower/bruncheon was at LouVino, a Southern-inspired restaurant and wine bar downtown Cincinnati.  What a great place!  The celebration was downstairs in a private room and Oona’s friends, coworkers, future sisters-in-law, mother-in-law and relatives were in attendance.
The upstairs wine bar at LouVino’s. I’m recommending this place to out-of-town guests for Oona’s wedding!
The downstairs room where the brunch was held…
Thanks to Sam’s sisters, the table settings were beautiful..
Mimosas kept us refreshed and hydrated!
Oh yeah, and water (in the background) also kept us hydrated.  The food was so great that I never took a pic–I was too busy shoveling the Warm Brussels Salad into my mouth!
We played girlie games.  I won Scattergories.  But the best game was where Oona had to guess answers to questions that Sam answered in advance.  For ever wrong answer, a wad of bubble gum was placed in Oona’s mouth!  It was a riot!
It was only natural that I took myself out of the “Guess the Age” game.  I’m no cheater!
Miss Oona getting ready for more bubble gum!  She actually did a great job.  Out of 30 questions, she got 2/3’s correct!
The prize for the Scattergories win..a cute mug and a Starbucks card!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of the gifts.  Crate & Barrel is very popular–eh???
Happy little wine glasses…
Happy little Oona!
The baking girl was thrilled to receive mixing bowls.  Did I mention I gifted her with a Stainless Kitchen Aid Mixer…just like mine?  I swear the baking is genetic!
This.  This was on Oona’s wish list and she was so happy to receive this!  (Hmmmm maybe she’ll give me her Mr. Coffee machine…)
BFF’s.  They’ve been friends since middle-school.  Two beauties!
This photo of us was taken after I was crying…
..and this is why.  Lauren, Oona’s BFF and Maid of Honor, gifted Sam’s mom and me with embroidered hankies.  Both moms were crying because it was just a touching and generous gift!   I’m crying again!
I was very happy to be in attendance.  Oona didn’t want a shower in Philly simply because she felt that asking my side of the family and her Northeast friends, was asking them to spend too much money—what with the travel to Ohio and the hotel, she wanted to keep expenses down for everyone.  You know—I was very proud of her decision.  I think I raised a very conscientious young woman!
And the fact Sam’s family has welcomed Oona really made me feel warm and fuzzy inside!
May I present the future Mrs. Butts.  Coming from a very competitive family, it pleases me to have my daughter’s future last name be greatness such as this.  When/if they have children and their children are in competitive activities, they can hashtag:  #MyButtsgonnakickyours  or… #Buttsbekickin’
Some after-brunch fun.  Isn’t that dress adorable?  It’s a Lilly Pulitzer..and those shoes!  The daughter has great taste..and she’s gorgeous!
By the time we got back to the house, the rain came and it was time to head to Sam’s mom’s home for a casual, laid back and fun dinner!
And more Aperol Spritzes!
The recipe?  Three parts Prosecco, Two parts Aperol, One part (a splash) Seltzer and an orange slice to make it nice!
Sunday morning brought forth a bit of a hangover and the flight back to Philly.  Isn’t it funny how when you wish for a delay, the flight is on time?
Gracie was sad to see me go.  I was sad to see me go!
Minimal dawdling on the return.  There was no delay.  WAIT!  Does that say Air France?  Yeah…but it’s the plane back to Philly…
And despite the timeliness of the flight home, I did manage to get this sweatshirt as a reminder of a great weekend!
I arrived back home Sunday afternoon.  When Bonaparte picked me up, I’m not too sure he was happy to see me because he kept mentioning how tired I looked.  He was right. I had a bad hangover    FOODover, because of all the food I ate.
Yeah. I pretty-much crashed when I arrived home.  Funny how I still think I’m in my twenties sometimes!
Do you ever get sad when you leave someplace and someone?  I was incredibly sad to leave but after I arrived home and unpacked and got to telling the Frenchman about the weekend, the sadness lifted and I felt really happy.  Happy that I was able to enjoy the weekend with my daughter and her future family! And happy to be back sitting next to my husband on the sofa!
And she’s the reason the weekend was a stellar one!  My baby is getting married!
More Mother-of-the-Bride Fun! Far be it to not take advantage of Oona’s pre-wedding events to not make it about me.

The Dreamcast is 20 years old today.
I had never anticipated a console quite like I did the Dreamcast. I mean, Sega was coming back! Sonic was my long-established favourite game, so Sonic Adventure was super exciting. Virtua Fighter 3tb was the game I’d most often drop my coins in when I visited Sega Park, and the idea of a proper home version was beyond anything I could have hoped for. I’d read and re-read issues of CVG, committing every scrap of information to my memory.
The first time I laid hands on a Dreamcast was at the local Toys R Us in the summer of 1999, about two or three months ahead of launch. The console was running the E3 demo of Sonic Adventure, and I don’t know how long I stood there playing everything I could, but I reckon it was somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour. Boy, those other kids must have been pissed off. But it was real, and it looked as good as it did in the magazines. It was fast and exciting and goddamn, did I want it. Weirdly, when demo pods became more widely available in other stores, they mostly played DreamOn Vol.1 - the bundled demo disc with Trickstyle, Ready 2 Rumble and none of the stuff you’d really buy a Dreamcast for.
When I finally got a Dreamcast, I played the heck out of it. Sonic Adventure was the main attraction, of course, but Chu Chu Rocket got a good amount of play too. It doesn’t get enough credit for being a bloody good puzzle game, even if Sega’s marketing of it was stupid (they spent £10 million advertising the fact that you could get it free, and shipped out 100,000 copies). It wasn’t long before I picked up Virtua Fighter 3tb too. Power Stone soon followed and it was one of those game-changing moments. Turns out I didn’t need a million unlockable cars or hours of lovingly rendered FMV, just a chaotic game where I could lob chairs at people.
The Dreamcast was the first internet-capable device in my house. I’d have to trail a wire from my bedroom down to the phone socket to connect up the modem, and call charges meant that I couldn’t stay online long. But at a time in my life when things were hard offline, it was a way to escape and find people I belonged with. I was able to find other Sonic fans online, and even wrote my own (very crappy) Geocities site using the Dreamcast pad and DreamKey’s on-screen keyboard. I resented Area51′s move away from IkonBoard back to ezBread (fucking hell, that’s old) because I couldn’t post to it on Dreamcast.
As I grew increasingly alienated from the people around me at school, the Dreamcast continued to offer an escape, even in its dying days. Metal Gear Solid 2? Don’t care, I’ve got Headhunter. Sonic Adventure 2 was everything a teenage outcast could have wanted, complete with edgelord new character. But it wasn’t all great. Rez’s disappearance from the shelves about 13 seconds after launch sucked and I’ll always remember being cut up when Dreamarena closed and I had to get DreamKey 3.0 to get online.
It was painful to watch the decline of what I felt was still a great machine, but fortunately Japan had me covered. I mean, did you see Ikaruga? That looked as good as anything else on any other platform. I jumped into the import scene hard, and I started up a website to review the new games coming out. I would engage in relentless self-promotion and actually got a bit of a following for a while. Getting stung for £12 of import charges on Border Down felt punitive back then, but look at the price of it now. I learned to love shoot-’em-ups in a way I never had, bought my first King Of Fighters game and discovered that Puyo Puyo was actually still a thing.
When I got to uni I couldn’t keep the site going, but I bought all those games right up until Karous came out in 2007. It’s hilarious in hindsight - I’d go to the post room to pick up something new and it’d be a Dreamcast game, when other students were blowing their loans on new PS3s and Xbox 360 games. But by that point, my Dreamcast-inspired move away from the gaming mainstream was well and truly complete - I got a Wii on launch during my first year, but the next console I got was a Turbografx. One night, a flatmate passed me her phone so a friend could ask to borrow FIFA. I didn’t have it. “Oh right, so Pro Evo then?” Nope. “What football game do you play then?” Erm, I’ve got a white label version of 90 Minutes for the Dreamcast… (She brought the dude up to check my room. Bit of a violation, really.)
Without the Dreamcast, my life would be very different. I wouldn’t have the friends I have. I might not have the job I have. I certainly wouldn’t have rediscovered my love for arcade games. Hell - it was a dark time in my life and there were times that I considered doing stupid things, and having the Dreamcast around made things suck a little less so I never did. So thanks, you crazy doomed console. You couldn’t save Sega but you might have saved me.
