“[grissom and sara’s] attraction to each other was always based on the work. we were always in some kind of mind meld when we were working. there was nobody he would rather be in the lab with or on a crime scene with than sara. she got it. she got him, and he eventually got her.”—billy petersen, on gsr

⮡  in episode 02x18 “chasing the bus,” team graveyard arrives on the scene of a bus accident while the rescue operation is still in progress. as dead and injured victims are pulled from the wreckage, there is a brief instance when an elderly woman is taken into an ambulance on a stretcher, conscious and screaming out for her husband. grissom, sara, and warrick stand transfixed as she goes by them. as she disappears from their view, sara briefly turns toward grissom before he even starts speaking, looking haunted, seeming instinctively to think of him—the person she would call out for if it were her. the moment is brief and unmarked but telling as to how she regards him; how she feels.

Hey! Your recent gifset got me thinking about the ~iconic~ csi group shots. I noticed that in Chasing the Bus, Sara was on Grissom’s left side and Catherine on his right. Then in Bodies in Motion, Sara was at his right side while Catherine was on the left. Not sure if you discussed this before or if you have any thoughts on it - but do you think there’s a significance to it, like a shift in team dynamics? Or do you think it’s just purely for aesthetic purposes? Thank you!! :3
hey, @sabine--wrens!
personally, i think it’s 100% an aesthetic thing.
the directors wanted “hero shots” that showed the whole team in one frame, so they lined everyone up and arranged them in ways that they considered pleasing to the eye.
some of how the directors placed the actors probably had to do with distributing their various heights at least semi-evenly (so that the taller people wouldn’t be clustered together in the middle, drawing focus, for example); some of it the billings (or, in other words, having billy and marg “front and center” because they’re the show’s stars); some of it simple framing (for example, in the shot from episode 02x18 “chasing the bus,” making sure that the flashing lightbar on the emergency vehicle behind the team lined up “in the middle” of the group shot between nick and catherine’s heads); etc.
while thought obviously went into the decisions of who should stand where, i think that said thought mostly had to do with the production side of things, as opposed to the storytelling/characterization side.
the only real in-universe significance of the arrangement that i can think of is that grissom and sara do as a rule typically try to stand close to each other when they can and often mirror each other’s posture—but, then again, they tend to do so regardless of if anyone else is standing near to them or not, meaning that “the catherine of it all” is probably somewhat superfluous.
honestly, i don’t necessarily think there’s much to the fact that sara and catherine switch positions, as within the universe of the show there are plenty of times that they stand in completely different configurations (whether as a whole group or even just as a catherine-grissom-sara trio) that don’t place sara and catherine at grissom’s right and left hands, specifically, meaning that the ordering is not a consistent enough thing to imply anything about overall attitudes and/or behavior patterns on their parts.
to my mind, the characters simply stand where they stand, and aside from sara’s probably largely subconscious instinct to be as close as she can reasonably be to grissom at all times, not a lot of consideration goes into it.
they fall in where they fall in, you know?
completely outside of the issue of standing arrangements and these scenes in particular, i will say that i do think that during s5, the team dynamics shift, in that grissom does come to rely on sara a lot and view her as his “right hand” while catherine is supervising swing shift. she becomes his sounding board, partner, and #2, much in the same way that catherine had been in the past.
that’s not to say that i think that sara supplants or replaces catherine in the least, either for grissom individually or in the team hierarchy overall.
for one thing, it’s not as if grissom’s relationship with catherine goes away or deteriorates; they just don’t have as much opportunity to work together as they had in the past for as long as the team remains split. the second they’re reunited, they pick up at the same place they’d left off, with catherine being grissom’s trusted friend, partner, and lieutenant, same as she’s ever been.
for another thing, sara never officially takes over as assistant supervisor on the night shift (and particularly not as sofia still technically outranks her); catherine resumes that job immediately upon the reunification of the team in s6.
rather, that’s only to point out that during the time when he no longer has catherine at his side, grissom bestows more responsibility on sara (see episode 05x23 “iced”) and their dynamic on the job generally improves from what it’s been before, becoming more unencumbered and balanced in terms of power dynamics.
thankfully, even after team graveyard fully reunites, the change is one that sticks; grissom and sara work together incredibly well, with no traces of the old push-and-pull of earlier seasons still lingering between them.
it’s no coincidence that this shift coincides with them officially getting together as a couple.
anyway, that’s my take.
thanks for the question! please feel welcome to send another any time.

my favorite csi episodes (continued): 02x18 "chasing the bus" (14/25)
team graveyard investigates a bus crash in which nine people lost their lives. before his death, the driver claimed the bus began to vibrate, causing him to lose control. the team has to find out whether the accident truly was an accident---or the result of foul play.
