Croc vs Yoshi
this is a lot of rumor-milling, at least the backstory to this, so i probably don't have all the correct info but the story is that argonaut pitched a 3d platformer starring yoshi using the superfx chip they co-developed with nintendo. apparently nintendo shot it down but mysteriously miyamato came up with an idea that became mario 64 and argonaut was busy working on a reworked version of the yoshi pitch that became croc: legend of the gobbos
the timeline on this is a little fuzzy. but brrng hah.

Went down a brief Wikipedia rabbit-hole on Croc after the Wisconsin Computer Show post and uh. Learned some interesting info that has made a lot of things make sense.
Apparently the prototype was pitched to Nintendo as a Yoshi racing game, but Nintendo turned it down as they already had something similar in development.
This explains the protag's slightly off-brand-Yoshi look, which was entirely purposeful, and something I had personalty wondered about in the past.
I had no idea but it was developed for the Sega Saturn originally, then also ported to Windows and the PS1 (the version I played). There is also a side-scroller Game Boy Color game (which I had never heard of), along with a sequel (which I have partly played).
It received middling reviews; was criticized for being derivative (it has a lot of similar mechanics and visuals to Mario 64, Sonic, and Gex) and not terribly complex but was generally well-liked, especially for its music.
The music is excellent by the way, and apparently had to be quite compressed to fit it all on the disc.
Croc was voiced by Jonathan Aris who is a well-accomplished British Actor. All the vocal recording was done within an hour. (This is more funny than impressive, there was not a lot of voicework to be done and it's cute that it didn't take very long.)
The biggest complaint apart from it being derivative was the controls, both character and camera. Which I totally vouch for, especially late game.
So anyway yeah, this post was really only for me, I just wanted to go over some stuff I learned that delighted me. Croc is an old favourite (and an old foe) and it's neat to learn more about it.
