Note
Screaming bc I keep reading the tags on the polls and they're all like "well I like x ship more but Y ship had a higher impact on tumblr history"
BROTHERS, THATS NOT WHAT ITS ABOUT...ITS ABOUT VOTING WHICH SHIP YOU LIKE MORE. (OR WHICH ONE YOU HATE LESS. IN SOME CASES)
i mean we do say "this is a celebration of fandom history" on every single poll. like that is very much a thing that the polls say.
anyway you can vote according to whatever you feel like. you can vote for whichever ship you like more. you can vote for the ship you hate less. you can vote according to impact on fandom history. you can vote for the more annoying fanbase, or the less annoying fanbase, or for every single f/f ship regardless of any other facts about them, or the ship that has more instances of the letter E in their names. people can argue that we should all be voting according to whichever criterion they think is the right one, if they want. and you can find those arguments unconvincing, if you want. be free.

Propaganda
Martha Sleeper (Penthouse, Broken Dreams)— Her eyes are enough! She is one of the most beautiful women in old hollywood and should be more well known
Joan Blondell (Footlight Parade, The Public Enemy)—My Pre-code QUEEEEEN. Joan is a large part of why I love 30s movies. She's got such a flair and presence. She's not known for her voice, but her rendition of Remember My Forgotten Man will grab you by the heart. She played a variety of roles, and held her own with major stars like Bette Davis and Hot Vintage Poll icon James Cagney. She was a hardworker, even as Hollywood stopped giving her prime roles, and continued working in film and television up until her death. She's an absolute firecracker, even in her supporting roles I end up focused on her. Also, I just think it's cute that her name (real!) is Blondell.
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut]
Joan Blondell:

A pre-code sweetie. Hot, funny and practical.
Criterion retrospective:

Sharp-tongued, sharp-witted, and beautiful - what more could you ask for from a dame of the gangster film/screwball comedy era? (Also, James Cagney would want you to vote for her!)
with her sunny smile and characters tending to exhibit a blend of happy-go-lucky cheerfulness and scrappy toughness, joan blondell is one of the quintessential stars of the pre-code era. she and fellow fast-talking wisecracker james cagney were close friends, having met when they were in a broadway play together in 1929, and made seven movies together that ran the gamut from gangster pictures to comedies to musicals.
Tumblr media
She's absolutely hilarious and I love her
She's the wisecracking blonde who has been around the block and knows the score, but just look at those big blue eyes gazing at Jimmy Cagney as she burns the midnight oil to help him achieve his dreams and picks him up when he gets buffeted by life
Smart, snarky, and so sexy!
My Forgotten Man is one of the most haunting depictions of the consequences of WWI that I’ve ever seen, knocked out of the park by Joan Blondell’s performance. In one song number it traces sending the boys off to war, bringing them back to die in the streets maimed, drunk, and full of PTSD, then leaving them to starve in the Depression, framed by the suffering of the women who loved them. Holy shit? This is a musical number? They fucking produced this barnburner in a mainstream musical?

Round 1 Poll 75: Either one or the other
Durarara!! submission:
LITERALLY every single piece of information wrt """"""sociopaths"""""" as it relates to izaya. it's either ""izaya is a SOCIOPATH because he's doing this all for the lulz (he's not) and doesnt care about anyone (false)"" OR ""izaya's NOT a sociopath because he feels remorse a scant few times (that actually IS counted under the ""lack of remorse"" criterion, if you do feel the emotion but justify it it still counts) or he has emotions (you can have aspd and have emotions) or has character depth (""""sociopaths"""" arent 2d caricatures guys)"" no matter what its just a gross misinterpertation on what aspd ACTUALLY IS, complete with using outdated terminology. durarara fandom shut the fuck up about sociopaths EXCEPT FOR ME because i actually HAVE aspd. usually i'm a big champion of ""you CAN write abt the experiences of a demographic you are not a part of"" bc as long as you do research its chill. but none of these people did any research and i'm done being nice. shut the fuck up
Warrior Cats submission:
Mapleshade is either a cool serial killer who was perfect at her murder and was a girlboss through and through or she was a pathetic sopping wet innocent beast who deserved better with zero in between

Courtesy of @monstrousgourmandizingcats, scheduled for the next Basement screening is ハウス / Hausu (1977)! This because it's too short to have a poll set up, and it's been on my watchlist for a while now.
What?: Decked in bright visuals, Hausu (or House) effectively lures the viewer into a story that is much more terrifying.
Hoping to find a sense of connection to her late mother, Gorgeous takes a trip to the country to visit her aunt at their ancestral house. She invites her six friends, Prof, Melody, Mac, Fantasy, Kung Fu, and Sweet, to join her. The girls soon discover that there is more to the old house than meets the eye.
Why should you watch it?: Hausu by Nobuhiko Obuyashi is a spectacle of colors and sounds. Post-WWII, many places in the worlds experienced reinventions in the arts. In film, the French New Wave is frequently cited as an example. The Japanese New Wave (ヌーベルバーグ / Nūberu bāgu) that shared similar characteristics spanned from roughly the 1950s to mid-70s. Obuyashi got into the film industry while the New Wave was in full swing, though he would have a lengthy career in the making of television ads before having his directorial feature-film debut with Hausu.
It's the bright style of this marketing world, as well as the experimental culture at the time, that makes Hausu what it is. It's effects are practical, but this practicality comes through in the editing department rather than special effects. It's sets are small and reminiscent of theatre backdrops, it's soundtrack recognizable and bright in tones. All this makes for a candy-colored fever dream with the thesis question:
Can a house haunt itself?

(Description from Criterion)
Some warnings!: I haven't watched this film myself yet, but from what I could find, you should be fine if you're part of the Yellowjackets circle. Do check in case you want detailed warnings ahead of the watch. Given the time this was made in, the effects may not exactly be "scary" in the way we use that term today.
Based on some view of the characters, there are some stereotypes at play. Their names are indications of this, with "Prof" being a nerd and "Mac" being a character that is shown eating a lot. With this in mind, some jokes may not have aged well.
When?: Sunday September 4 at 10PM/22:00 CEST!
Link to the kosmi room will be shared ~20 minutes in advance

I have officially survived this semester. I'm gonna be prepping polls again now, but December be crazy, so it might be a while before they are posted.
However, I got a B in the class I thought I was going to fail so yay!
(I still can't figure out a computer program for my yearlong class but that's a whole other battle... just know that I hate the Brinkley Dynamic Response Criterion)
