Every piece of this episode is magic but Fjord getting a fake contact high is just truly a masterpiece.

So, that moment when the transformation spell is completed and Nott the Brave has finally turned completely into Veth the Brave, and the character card/sheet changes oh so subtly from our favourite Goblin to our favourite halfling

you know, the only thing that could make this episode better is if they had spent the entire second half in formal wear-- oh wait. they did

hoooolyy shit Essek really truly feels like a Neutral Evil aligment.
like I don’t know that much about the intricacies of the alignment chart, but I really liked one interpretation I’ve seen somewhere which places Evil on the Selfish end of the Selfish-Selfless axis and boy does it show in this whole conversation. it truly feels like he’s never cared about anybody else except for himself and not out of some maliciousness but because perhaps nobody had taught him better, along with the fact his emotional growth was at some point overshadowed by his intellectual prowess.
that moment where Caleb talks about friends and how the people with whom Essek’s been scheming would without a moment’s thought cut his throat. to which Essek replies softly, “then perhaps it is best that I surround myself with friends. to protect me.” especially was what prompted this post into existence. it comes across so calculating despite him already being on the cusp of changing.
also this bit when Caleb asks about being able to count on him if things go sour and Essek replies that he has “far more allegiance to [The M9] than the Empire or Dynasty, for [he’s] not had any for either” is so deliciously Selfish/Evil.
EDIT: ooooh may I also add:
Jester: You're not going to betray us again are you Essek?
Essek: Well that depends... if you show me kindness...
Jester: We've... we've done nothing but show you kindness?
Essek, after a pause, breaking: ...you are not wrong.

I am so conflicted right now. Traitor but friend? What was the deal? Can Essik be redeemed? ... find out tomorrow on Critical Role (for me anyway as I must sleep)
