i love shen jiu because there's just something deliciously horrifying about a character who was meant to be redeemed becoming doomed in the story because an author was pressured by readers to go in a different direction. what a cosmic horror for the character! you had the potential for good, the potential to be redeemed. all the seeds were there, and because of a million invisible hands you will never be able to comprehend you are thrust into the place of the villain. you cannot be saved and even when you are it can't be as yourself.
it's so interesting bc mxtx protags tend to be like 'you were a hero because it is what was asked of you. but now that the world refuses it for you will you still choose to be good', but sy is the only protag for whom that choice just...never quite comes?  there's never quite a moment where being good would be the harder choice for him. even when he dies for lbh there's the threat of system failure & the knowledge that he has a chance of coming back. at every turn his goal IS to be kind, as dictated by a seemingly omniscient being. in that way, sj occupies a much more traditionally tragic mxtx protagonist role - whenever he IS kind, he is ostracized by the world. when he tries to save lqg, when he's kind to nyy, when he tried to shield qht...what did that get him?
it's soooo interesting that like many mxtx characters, he's seen by the world to be awful but internally does try to do good, but because he is doomed by the narrative he never gets anyone who /understands/ him, which is the grace that redeemed both wwx and xl at their lowest points. yqy is the closest to fitting this role for sj, but he like. was a COWARD about shit and never tried to heal the rift between him and sj and also semi-believed the rumors by the end. he wasn't like mxtx mls who are defined by 'even if the world is against you, i believe in your heart'
yqy was like i will protect you without the i will believe in your heart part, which would've felt worse for sj. like he can protect himself fine!!! he needed someone to just, understand that he wasn't the evil person ppl said he was.
a lot of people have spoken more eloquently than me abt how sj was deprived of the chance to be good because of his circumstances within the narrative, but i’m just fascinated by how he was deprived of the chance to be good because of something greater than that, a mass of god-like beings outside of the story, exerting their will for a black and white narrative where he can be the one to blame. even when he could’ve been redeemed, he couldn’t have. the world literally refused him the chance.

Fandom Gripe #14: Imma be real: seeing people ship bingjiu in all seriousness (as opposed to jokey joke shitposts, despite those making me uncomfortable too, but whatevs) makes my blood boil because this isn’t even a point of fan interpretation; it’s just straight up denial 😭 We know what bingjiu’s canon relationship is: Shen Jiu horrifically abuses Luo Binghe out of petty jealous, lbh graphically tortures and murders him as payback. Shen Jiu says his only regret isn’t killing the CHILD he was tasked with caring for and teaching, as if it’s not his own fault that Bingge became the monster he did. Nothing in this screams romantic or misunderstanding that can be resolved with “communicating your true feelings” (those “true feelings” are canonically jealousy and hatred, folks).
Also, Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu are not the same person and are not interchangeable, so no, bringing back Shen Jiu for Bingge to love or giving Bing-mei just anybody in the body of Shen Qingqiu would not end in another love story. Bingge would just kill Shen Jiu all over again, probably more torturously than before, and Bing-mei, depending on his mood, would likely do the same to his imposter. All versions of Luo Binghe love Shen Yuan, not the facade that is Shen Qingqiu without Shen Yuan, specifically, transmigrating.

what are ur thoughts on other mxtx ships i think xicheng is funny cause i like to imagine jc being pretty and decides to duck fuck lwj’s older brother i like fenqing cause i like the image of them being angry at each other for 700 years or wtv but still being together yk qijiu vibes coworkers with way too much sexual tension i think hualian does the devotion waiting trope better than w/x cause hua cheng is cool and xl is mature bingqiu is funny bc svsss is funny and sy is funny
i’m not really a multiship kind of person, i usually like one or two ships and then the rest are on a sliding scale of entertaining to meh to disgusting. for mxtx’s novels, i really like chengxian and qijiu. qijiu does have that coworkers with sexual tension vibe, but they’ve also got crazy devotion and sacrificial tendencies and are absolutely insane for each other. i love mutual obsession in couples. i’m pretty meh on xicheng, i don’t really see the appeal as they hardly interact and i think it’s mostly optimist/pessimist pairing along with pair the spares. not into fengqing bc i found mq and fx to be pretty annoying in tgcf. hualian is on the same level of wangxian for me bc hc hardly has a character (similar to lwj) and xl’s just goody two shoes trying too hard to be sarcastic and his outbursts are ‘spice’ mxtx added in that just reads as fake. bingqiu’s not bad, i like lbh’s char and i think his extreme personality is entertaining. not much of a fan of shen yuan but he’s okay.

Would they actually have kids: SVSSS
(and would they be good parents)
Bingqiu: wouldn't have a kid but in the unlikely event that they did have a kid it would be on accident and it would be left with Yue Qingyuan to "look after for a bit" so much that the kid would think Yue Qingyuan was their dad. They would love it in a vague way but also be too involved in each other. Kid would be happy with Yue Qingyuan though
Moshang: probably does have a kid at some point for succession reasons. They would probably be fairly decent parents but it would be a struggle at times. They love the kid but both would have problems expressing it. The kid would adapt well however because they would try the best they could. Hypocritically Shen Qingqiu would spoil the shit out of the kid. He adores playing Cool Uncle
Liushen: again wouldn't have kids but then they also wouldn't have sex. It would never occur to them to. If a kid did happen they wouldn't know what to do with it
Bingliushen: absolutely not
Qijiu: are you fucking kidding me!?!!
LiuJiu: this is an even worse idea somehow
BingJiu: this would go so horribly it would some how end the world. Dear god
Liu Mingyan and Sha Hualing: they have like 6 kids and they are excellent mums to a gaggle of unruly children. They often bite Liu Qingge
Cumplane: no because they can't take care of themselves much less a baby. If they did have a baby they would lose it within an hour
Mobing: yes. Again to secure dynasty and all that. They would be emotionally unavailable but not actively abusive fathers. There would have been a lot of nanny's involved
Liu Qingge and Shang Qinghua: paradoxically I think they would adopt a child and actually make really good parents weirdly. It would be challenging but I think they would do a good job

Look, SVSSS Inuyasha au is easy right? Binghe is Inuyasha. Shen Yuan is Kagome. Shen Jiu is Kikiyo.
I would makes Kaede Yue Qingyuan I guess, even if I hate to shove him into a smaller role lol
I don’t really like BingJiu, so I wouldn’t have them dating like Kikiyo and Inuyasha, but I guess teacher student? That would work I guess.
Sessomaru is a tough one, because on one hand, Binghe’s family is Zhuzhi-Lang. which doesn’t really fit? I guess it could be his dad, for whatever reason, but then why? But his dad as Sessomaru and ZZL as Jaken would work.
But. But. But. Jaken is so Shang Qinghua. So bad. Which is guess would make Sessomaru Mobei Jun? Which could work.
I have no one else. Oh! Wait, Sango would be a good Liu Qingge, with her dead/brainwashed brother as Liu Mingyan. That would be fun. Shippo could be uh… probably not an actual kid, but one of the disciples I guess. I’ll go with Ning Yingying until I can think of someone else. Uh. Miroku. If SQH wasn’t Jaken, I would almost say him? Kinda?
I have no idea on the bad guys lol. Not one.

Can I ask your top 10 fav fics ever (from any fandom, if you don't mind)?
Also, just curious, is there a story behind your name "verycharismaticdragon "?
I'm not the best at remembering things past the hyperfix, so half of this will be SV, but I'll start at prev fandoms for variety.
Artificial Nocturne (Motorcity) - I've read this ages ago but I remember it rearranging my brain chemistry. And making me realize I had a scar kink.
An Abomination, Grand Cleric Elthina's Murderer and the Herald of Andraste walk into a Bar (Dragon Age) - it's probably abandoned but it's so good. Anders and Varric in this are so *incoherent gesturing*
intra-personal negotiation (Venom) - I don't understand why I didn't bookmark a single Venom fic even though I distinctly remember like 5 straight bangers, but thankfully I'm following this author at least ✊
deathbed (Qi Ye) - that time I was whining there were no first life JBY/ZZS fics and then! Anyway it's understandably melancholy it's also very pretty and exactly right as it should be.
the good rain knows when to fall (TYK) - you should be reading Bichen's entire discography fic collection I just remembered this one first. This one is lighthearted old foxes clowning! The author's angst and cannibalism are also top-notch 👌
Ok now to SVSSS.
Joyed to be Forlorn - THE binghe fic for me. inspired me to start digging into Luo Binghe's character in a way that resulted in Transmigrator Time Traveler, hopefully thats recommendation enough
continued - possibly THE best fic in scum villain fandom. the format alone... oh just read it, you'll see what I mean.
A Child Once - again, i could rec Tossawary's entire discography, but this one is my personal favorite. (if your fav character is SQH though, the one you want is pride is not the word I'm looking for. aka THE sqh fic.)
sweet tongues, sharp teeth - unfinished but raw enough to lodge itself in my brain despite that.
Tale Within A Tale - cute as fuck. made me kick my legs and giggle many times. ...and because once I started pulling up SV fics it was difficult to stop...
side effects (rated E) - part 2 in particular didnt have to go so hard for a fic where the premise is 'bingqiu with tentacles'
don't underestimate me (rated E) - "all for the sake of preserving biodiversity!" god shen yuan SO would be in this situation.
The Best Luo Binghe (rated E) - binggeyuan. shen yuan SO would be in this situation, take 2.
put me in, coach (rated M) - bingqiushang. so fucking funny okay i love it so much
from your knees (rated E) - bingjiu. they're so rancid in this one its perfect 🖤
...Damn, this really puts the difference between my non-hyperfix and hyperfix memory into perspective, huh 😅 i actually had to trim the sv list a bit 😅😅😅
Anyway, yeah, my username actually just references an rp session we had with friends quite a few years back. Where at a certain point my character was referenced as "a VERY charismatic dragon" after managing to turn the antagonist by impressing them (thanks to some VERY lucky dice rolls). And I was dissatisfied with my old username at the time, and thought it sounded funny and snappy enough, so - stars aligned and all that. I'm happy with it still! Probably because dragons are always cool ✌️

Even though he'd always revered Shen Qingqiu, he had no illusions about how his master treated and looked at him.
At 14, after two years of abuse, Luo Binghe still reveres Shen Qingqiu. He knows Shen Qingqiu (Shen Jiu) hated him, and he still looks up at him.
He thinks he's done something wrong.
Saying nothing about whether Binghe had Shizun-fever in every universe (I do think what Luo Binghe fell in love with was Shen Yuan's kindness and support)(I say this whilst consuming Bingjiu fics like a starving man). But if nothing else, there was an admiration that soured.
Bingmei deals with this by thinking he's magically proven himself to Shen Qingqiu and rationalising that all the past suffering was training to make himself stronger. But he's plagued with the thought that this favour could be lost equally fast.
Bingge deals with this by running in the opposite direction. He pivots 180 to regard SQQ as detestable scum. He is not the problem, he tells himself. SQQ is. But this conviction is shaken when he sees a universe where SQQ is nice to him.
On the topic of a SY reveal... sure SY revealing his identity would make Bingmei happy because SY never hated him, never wanted to hurt him, and is as obsessed with him from the start as Bingmei is with SY. But more than that...
SY isn't the godlike figure who descended from above to pick him up from the dirt. SY isn't the person he spent two years desperately trying to please, not the figure his admiration had (initially) been directed towards. Maybe there, there would be a sense of loss.
Maybe Bingmei knew from the start that SY wasn't SJ because of how differently they are. But also, maybe he wondered whether he really had just offended his Shizun somehow the first time round. That his good treatment is conditional on how he acts.
He learns SY isn't the Shizun who had him strung up and whipped, or locked him in a woodshed. SY is the Shizun who gave him medicine and smiled to him in a carriage.
SY's love was never condition. SJ's hate was never deserved. There was nothing wrong with him, right from the start.

An AU that could be very fun to make is a time travel/fix-it Bingjiu with a small, tiny, inconsequential twist :)
What if Luo Bingge goes back in time (perhaps after seeing Shen Yuan and his pathetic husband Luo Bingmei) and think "I want that too! I want that soft, kind shizun too! Why him and not me?!" And at first, the timeline stays exactly the same. Shen Qingqiu is horrible, he's a lecher and a killer and deserves to suffer from that (+plus casting Bingge in the abyss)
And then an idea worms into Bingge's head (by the power of delulu I gift upon him) that maybe Shen Qingqiu is so horrible to him is because he's also going back in time and trying to stop Luo Binghe from ever becoming such a monster... in the only way he knows, which is to punish and beat and throw into an Endless Abyss rift, a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Then because Shen doesn't show signs of actually remembering the previous "loop", Luo Binghe starts to think that maybe Shen Qingqiu doesn't come from the future like him each time, but he sees the future, of what would be the world if he let Luo Binghe live.
And that should ring some bells of doubt too because it does not explain much or why Shen Qingqiu hurts him and not kill him if it's to spare the world of who he will become (and why kill Liu Qingge, who had a decent chance of fighting and winning against Bingge?) But the power of delulu is strong when Luo Binghe has been going back to the same time, punishment and misery as his disciple time and he gets into his head that maybe, maybe Shen Qingqiu is so horrible to him is not because he's a petty, viciously jealous man but because he cannot show favoritism or special treatment to a student (nevermind all that's happening with Ning Yingying) and Shen Qingqiu is fighting against the whole cultivation world to be with Binghe from the beginning.
So Luo Binghe starts... acclimating... Shen Qingqiu from disciple time to have a sticky, faithful, always present and obedient little sheep (bro is so confused but Bingge has been seducing and manipulating for so long now it's easy to twist his bitter, angry teacher into someone that's more akin to a hurt feral cat just hissing at the world because he cannot trust anyone but the kind hand that still choose him over and over again)
And at the end, they're together, happy as can be and both their wishes are fulfilled (Bingge to have his kind shizun, and Shen Qingqiu to be in a position of power where he wouldn't have to struggle ever again with someone that would never break a promise 💚)

Xin Mo woke up, at least as much as a sword could wake up. This was rather surprising to the sword, as it had spent thousands of years accumulating enough energy to become somewhat sapient, only for its first true life experience to be its destruction at the hands of its last wielder and his husband. New as it was to being an individual, Xin Mo felt surprisingly ambivalent about the event, especially since it currently seemed to not be destroyed at all.
With what little awareness a spiritual sword has, it was able to examine its surroundings and found them familiar. The cavern it was currently sitting in, blade sunken into the dark obsidian rock, was where it had rested for the centuries between its final wielder and the one who came before him. Checking its internal sense of time, Xin Mo found it to be somewhat out of tune, as it seemed to have moved a number of decades back into the past. It wasn’t bothered — it was a sword and not some simple mortal who had to deal with curses such as ageing and boredom — as it could use this time it had been granted to figure out what went wrong.
Xin Mo, before becoming aware, had taken a rather simple approach to its wielders. Like all beings of the Abyss, those who wielded it would always seek to become stronger than their enemies and to reproduce. Xin Mo merely helped them achieve those goals, pushing them along if necessary, and then eventually they’d push to far, and it would eat their soul in exchange. A fair deal for the power it granted, Xin Mo thought. Its last wielder though… he had been different. It had pushed him on the path each wielder eventually followed, but he had ultimately rejected it, and then destroyed it. Clearly a different approach was needed, Xin Mo decided with its newfound self-awareness.
Xin Mo waited patiently for its wielder, as the years went by. Perhaps its sense of time had been knocked off by its destruction and subsequent displacement through time, but it seemed as if he took longer to find it this time. It didn’t really matter to it at the time, but when his old wielder finally drew him from that dark cave, Xin Mo realised something was different. This wielder was similar to its former one… but not the same. This one was weaker, angrier, and without the driving hope and desire he had had before. As it lay in his hands while he took a rare break to rest his body, it took the opportunity to slip through his mind and memories.
The difference was clear almost immediately — this version of its wielder lacked love, the ever-present thoughts of his future husband absent. Well then, Xin Mo would just have to change that, to give its wielder a happy ending — and hopefully avoid its own fate of destruction.
(aka: Xin Mo transmigrates into PIDW and decides to make BingJiu canon)
What is this masterpiece and what is it doing in my ask of all places :0
I love this! I want more! The set up is SO GOOD. Xin Mo is going to drive Luo Binghe crazy... for Shen Jiu! It's great! There's nothing like a matchmaker that one can never escape from!
The fact that Xin Mo was lodged into a stone is giving me King Author vibes. Only the true wielder can pull it out of stone! And then Shen Jiu can be a pillow princess.

You know when you continue to read or watch something only because of a character or setting or the idea of it. That's how I feel about svsss. I don't care for Shen Yuan, he is a surface level character in every way and not that great or nice of a person, in my opinion. What made me continue with svsss and the ones I care about are Luo Binghe and Shen Jiu.
I know svsss is a parody, but I can't help thinking that it could have been so much more if it focused on Luo Binghe and Shen Jiu. I think if it was about SJ being able to come to terms and heal from his past with LBH help, it would have been so much better.
Maybe something like SJ being so tired of everything and LBH being very persistent in getting close to SJ that they end up having a close relationship and then dealing with everything else that happens. Or a number of other ways their relationship and past could have been explored.
I just find LBH and SJ (BingJiu) potential to be so much more compelling than what svsss ended up being.

Comedy of errors Bingjiu where SJ swaps into SY's body when he dies of qi deviation. It's weird but SJ does what he always does: survive, adapt, overcome. Shen Yuan's family is the biggest adjustment but it's...fine. More tolerable than the peak lords at least.
Years pass, he's thriving and has mellowed out a bit now. Amazing what getting out of a constant trauma state and modern heart demon healing can do for a man. But, his own nature keeps him waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it does -
- In the form of his now very adult former disciple directly into his path on his way home from the grocery. RIP to the once perfectly ripe tomatoes now crushed into pulp beneath a man who should have no idea who SJ is. He's annoyed but it should be easy to get rid of the beast.
Meanwhile, LBH's finally managed to squirm his way into a reality where he doesn't have to fight that cry baby for a nice Shizun thanks to a tip from the last iteration of the pair he came across. Finally, it's his turn.
LBH proceeds to try every trick in his playbook to try and win over "Shen Yuan" even if he does remind LBH more of his scum Shizun in personality than the various kind Shizuns he's come across.
It doesn't matter- every watered down version of himself got a kind shizun and this one is HIS. Hasn't he suffered more than any of them, doesn't he DESERVE to have that kindness and love after everything?
Of course, SJ won't give in easily. But, he's read through PIDW while acclimating and it seems a wiser plan to keep up the Shen Yuan charade than come clean and risk meeting the same fate as the SQQ in the novel.
He takes every opportunity to try and foist this sticky demon lord off onto someone else. He never threw anyone into the Abyss, why is this HIS problem. Sure, the constant meals are nice and maybe the not-so-little beast is growing on him like a fungus but- that means nothing.
Trying to keep LBH at a distance works for a while, a few months at least. How the beast is managing a prolonged stay in a new world isn't really SJ's problem given he never asked for this but, he finds himself thinking about it as autumn shifts to winter.
LBH adapted fairly quickly and it didn't take more than a few days for him to switch from formal robes to something more suitable for this world each time he popped up like a curly haired weasel millipede.
After following, clinging to really, SJ back to his apartment that first day, the beast was always popping up around meal times or when SJ left to run errands. It was invasive at first but has become routine.
Still, extended stays in SJ's private space would -not- do so each night LBH was politely bundled, or as close to SY's mannerisms as SJ could infer, out the door. But- SJ thought about it as the weather module on his phone announced another temperature drop.
Where had the little mongrel been staying? He didn't recall seeing a coat earlier in the day when he shuffled LBH out after their lunch. If the farce of Master Airplane's novel was correct, LBH would be more than capable of handling himself. But SJ thought about it.
Perhaps he'd been wearing SY's face for too long, he was clearly going soft in his old age. It was easy enough to ignore in the light of day until SY's meimei had to show up at the wrong time and point a spotlight directly at the issue.

Till the end of life #bingjiu
It was roughly two decades after his reign that Luo Binghe's harem was dissolved. Most of them returned to their hometown, some passed in their personal disputes against each other, while some chose to spend their remaining lifespan there.
Luo Binghe gave them the freedom to choose their own fate. However, the only one occupying him every night since then was his empress, Shen Jiu. A century passed had since they resolved all misunderstandings and got rid of their heart demons.
Shen Jiu took the position seriously, taking care of all household matters and getting rid of anything that threatened Luo Binghe.
Did his consort look sexy when he ordered for a traitor to be executed? Well, the throne can attest to that, it witnessed all the shameless things they did - things that Shen Jiu would never admit, no matter how much he enjoyed it.
It was truly strange whenever he thought about it sometimes. He could get tired looking at ten different women, but Luo Binghe could never get enough of Shen Jiu no matter how many years passed.
However for the past few weeks Luo Binghe now noticed Shen Jiu had been spending most of his time sleeping. He no longer even wanted to join the court meetings (understandable, who wants to listen to those demon elders rambling?)
He joked that his consort was growing old. Shen Jiu bonked his head lightly, but said nothing.
He even gradually seemed to be losing interest in Luo Binghe's favorite sexy times. Luo Binghe kept checking if his body smells, if his pillar wasn't working well, if maybe.... well, if maybe shizun wants to top now?
(He used to be weirded by the idea, but if it was Shen Jiu, Luo Binghe would immediately get the oil ready before Shen Jiu could even blink.)
But Shen Jiu asked for cuddles instead, and how could Luo Binghe refuse that?
Horror dawned upon him as one night while cuddling in bed together, Luo Binghe brushed his fingers in Shen Jiu's hair and noticed white strands. "Shizun, your hair..."
Shen Jiu snorted. "You only noticed now?"
Even if they were called immortals, they weren't really 'immortal'.
No matter how good their cultivation, a human's lifespan couldn't compare to a heavenly demon. And Shen Jiu, whose cultivation was ruined in his younger days, couldn't achieve his max potential - including a longer lifespan.
All healers were summoned. But they couldn't find anything wrong.
It was because there was nothing wrong. It was simply a natural passage of time, something that nobody could stop - not even a heavenly demon.
As days passed, Luo Binghe sat by his consort's bed in despair. By now Shen Jiu could barely walk. His time was mostly spent sleeping. There would soon come a day when he wouldn't wake up anymore.
Luo Binghe refused to accept that. He held Shen Jiu's hands. "Shizun...would you let me..."
Shen Jiu shook his head. "You promised you would never use it on me again."
Luo Binghe vowed that he would never use his blood on Shen Jiu, the day of their marriage. But how could he simply watch now?
Shen Jiu gazed fondly at him. He slowly linked their fingers together. "This is fine."
Luo Binghe trembled. "How can you say it's fine?"
Shen Jiu held his hand tighter. "Let me go before you, Binghe."
"Shizun-"
"I wouldn't be able to live if you were gone first, anyway."
Luo Binghe buried his face in Shen Jiu's palms. What about him? Did Shen Jiu think Luo Binghe could keep living without him?
Shen Jiu sighed. "My days are short, compared to other immortals...but the days with you weren't bad at all."
Those words were as close to a love confession he had ever heard from Shen Jiu.
Luo Binghe stubbornly stayed by Shen Jiu's side. All duties were taken over by his children and subordinates.
On a cool autumn day, Shen Jiu breathed his last.
For an entire day, Luo Binghe pondered quietly, eyes staring at the map of the holy mausoleum.
Then few days later, his children noticed that there were now also white streaks on Luo Binghe's hair.
He had let himself age.
Luo Binghe didn't want to disappoint Shen Jiu, not when he had passed peacefully. However, he couldn't bear to live centuries more without Shen Jiu.
He thus suppressed his own demon side and let himself age like a mortal.
Perhaps one day, his soul too will enter the next cycle, and they will reunite.
