me: someday I'll get to go back out there and date again
sister-in-law: yeah, there will be lots of people!
me: maybe I could pick up a divorcee. all the good ones are taken, but not forever
sister-in-law: you could find a cougar. or a cougarette.
me: "cougar" is already a woman, right? we need to butch up that name to find a male version
my brother, running in from the other room: COURGARER

Charlie Bird was Cosmo the Cougar, the BYU mascot, from 2015 to 2018. You may have seen him dancing with the Cougarettes. After graduating, he wrote a personal op-ed in the Deseret News where he came out as both Cosmo and gay.
He has written a book that will he sold at Church-owned Deseret Book. I’m very happy such a book is available. Having a gay man’s story available will help with understanding among Church members and be a ray of hope for youth in the closet who will see someone like them at the bookstore.
When I was growing up, the only books from the Church about being gay were The Miracle of Forgiveness and To Young Men Only, both horrible and traumatizing.
So far Deseret Book has published the stories of a few cis gay men. I’m still waiting for when they’ll share stories of L,B,T,Q,I,A+ people.

I was supposed to go to a show in the city last night, but my friend from new york was visiting for Mother’s Day weekend, so I decided to go shopping and catch a movie with her instead. We bought an orchid as gift for her mom, and then Lily bulbs for my mom’s garden. The movie we saw was “Petite Maman”, a Celine Sciamma film. I cried halfway through and my friend let me hold her hand until the end. I remember I used to go to the movies by myself. Sometimes it was lonely. Sometimes it was nice to be alone. I don’t really remember that time too much anymore. It was almost two years ago.
We argued about time travel in the car afterwards. Somehow we started talking about stop motion film. We agreed claymation is slightly unnerving, but still really interesting to watch. I told her I wanted to start Rilakkuma and Kaoru, a stop motion slice of life series. She recommended Life of a Cougarette, also by Celine Sciamma. I’m sure it’ll make me sob.
I woke up early to make a cake for today. It’s also my brother’s 21st birthday, so it’s double the occasion. I chose an orange and olive oil tea cake for everyone. The olive oil makes it so dense and moist. My boyfriend can’t wait to try it. I’m saving him a slice to eat after our visit with my grandmother.
My mom is making us a breakfast she’s been wanting to try. It’s some kind of Italian sandwich. She bought fresh sourdough for it this morning. Between the cake, and her cooking, our kitchen smells amazing. The news is on idly in the background, her utensils are clinking, I am crocheting on the couch with headphones on. I’m thinking about picking some hydrangeas from the tree next door in a little bit.

This Week’s Expert Picks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second release of a Dresden File book this year, building off the first, the Titan has arrived to Chicago and Harry and friends must fend for their lives and the city. Friends and foes of old come together to battle against the Titan, forever changing the landscape of the magical world as well as the mortal.
I said this for the first book that was released this year, and after reading this book I still have come to the same conclusion. It should have been one book. The first book was slow and set up this one, with this it is nonstop action and intensity. It felt disjointed. I love battle scenes, and he is more than capable but it got tiring after 200 pages.
Butcher does continue raising the stakes even after this being the 17th of the series. New and old enemies, old friends coming to the aid of Chicago. Lots of changes in this book, necessary ones, and it definitely sets up for at least another book. How many more will Butcher writer? We can only wait and see. CJH

I have never read a romance novel. I get squeamish when there are sex scenes on TV. But in 2020 I set my first ever reading goals (unrelated to numbers): read genres I've never read, read local, read people in my circle. The Cougarette by Eliza David hit every one of those. Did I mention how nervous I was to read this book?
Here's the thing: I had forgotten that books can serve the magical purpose that got me into reading: escapism.
Holy cow, was this book ever the one I needed at the moment!
Ceecee is a fierce, fragile, and full woman with a complicated life who is a little out of touch with the times. Post-divorce our heroine is struggling with every part of her life and, trust, you will get sucked in. Because Ceecee has been living comfortably in routine for over 20 years, the complications in the plot sneak up on her more easily than they might a younger person (which I love, because this book is about a middle-aged divorcee trying to navigate a younger world both professionally and personally). At every step Ceecee tries to be strong, honest, straightforward and at every step there is one more complication she doesn't have the 21st Century know-how to deal with.
This powerful narrative has some sexy sex in it, yes, but it has a seriously complicated plot, characters to invest in, and is so easy to read.
Less guilty, more pleasure: I felt like I was reading a fashion magazine behind my textbook while reading this book and I couldn't put it down. While not the high-brow literary fic/nonfic I usually review, this book may have saved my sanity while I was struggling and I will be a Cougarette stan for life.
In *these challenging times* read The Cougarette ;) SE

Louise Glück's poetry resists collection, but on the announcement of her winning this year's Nobel Prize in Literature, I figured I would revisit and shed light on one of my favorite collections of poetry. Her poems from 1962 - 2012 are an exemplifying gaze into her drive to leave behind what came before. With the turning of each page, it becomes apparent that each poem is about what has yet to be imagined. That anticipatory feeling is what pulls me in as a reader and as a human trying to connect my spirit to others in order to feel less alone in the universe. However, Glück's work in this particular assemblage, and possibly all of her work, is about evolution, not settling, and being okay in that unsettling feeling of finding the future. From her ruthless verse to her visceral imagery, the work grows sharper and more fierce, and it is inspiring to wade in the words while an artist grows beyond boundaries of artistic edifice, turning into something transcendental. I really need to read more so I tackled a classic this week. Mind-blowing. This novel was written in 1996. Eight years before the Shrek 2 premier[1]. Eight years! How did David Foster Wallace have the foresight to anticipate a film so powerful that it could and would captivate and delight audiences to such an absurd and extreme extent[2]? It’s just, like, so crazy to me I guess. Super weird[3].

1. Shrek 2 premiered at Caanes, but was released in theaters worldwide two days early due to “fan demand”.
2. Although Shrek 2 lost to The Incredibles for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature the film single-handedly revived the Counting Crows randomly out of ninties alt-rock obscurity after a once unbelievably impressive career.
3. Although Infinate Jest was based in-part on Shakespeare’s Hamlet I felt I connected more so with its parallels to The Brothers Karamazov. I’m just kidding I haven’t read that either! LAW
