Whumptober 2022 - No. 23 - At the end of their rope
DarkHawk, T
Firewatcher AU (Tumblr / Ao3)
--
Denver’s highways were packed with cars and trucks; people leaving the city to seek a bit adventure and those leaving in search of some time away from city life. The further he was from the city the fewer cars he saw. The roads narrowed.
Now there was no barrier.
Now just a single lane going each direction.
Now no shoulder.
Now no lines.
Now a single lane paved road.
Now a rutted dirt road with branches scraping the sides of his truck.
And then a 4x4 wooden post driven into the ground with a sign saying that no motorised vehicles were allowed beyond that point.
Ross turned off the engine and removed the keys from the ignition. His ears rang in the sudden silence after the hours of highway and road noise, and just the sound of his truck and its contents rattling around.
He opened the door. Pine needles rustled under his hiking boots. There was bird song, but not much else. He grabbed his pack from the bed of the truck, tightened the laces on his boots, and locked the truck—not that there was anybody around to break into it nor was there anything worth stealing except for a pack of gum and a phone charger—before he set out.
The trail was well marked. A brown dirt path only about 12 inches wide meandered through the tall lodgepole pines.
He never thought he would end up here.
Twelve months ago he was running a sort of successful mining company in Denver. He was living with his wife. Everything had been fine.
Until it wasn’t.
She had started forgetting her keys. And then she was missing lectures. The university had put its foot down when she yelled at a student during class. There had been a lot of doctor’s appointments, scans, tests, and questions.
And then the diagnosis came.
She was suffering from early on-set Alzheimers and it was progressing rapidly.
Ross took a leave of absence from work to take care of her.
After about a month of that he had started drinking more. A few beers after she went to bed became a glass of wine with dinner, mid-afternoon shots. And sometimes he would just go to the local bar, a ten minute drive away, and he would stay there until closing.
And then he hit a parked car when he was driving home.
Her family stepped in at that point. They insisted on taking care of her. That meant taking her home to Cornwall with them. And Ross did not put up a fight. Part of him was relieved that she would no longer be his responsibility; that he would be able to go back to living his life.
And then she was gone.
The house was empty.
He went back to work, but he could not focus. Having a drink or two at lunch, or an Irish coffee for breakfast certainly did not help matters. He had expected to stop drinking. It had started with her illness, had gotten worse as she deteriorated and his stress increased, and he had expected his urge to drink would disappear when that stress was removed. But it did not. And he was drinking more now that she was gone than he was before.
They caught wind of his DUI and then he had been more than a little intoxicated during several important company meetings.
The Board of Trustees wanted him gone. But his second in command had convinced them to let him take a leave of absence. After that he will be allowed to return to the company on a probationary basis.
So here he was. In the middle of the woods.
He had applied for this job one evening while he was sitting home alone. He needed something to do during this forced break. If he sat at home he would go crazy.
Dwight had been the one to suggest that he look at seasonal Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, etc. jobs. They had built in end dates, often involved outdoor manual labour, and minimal contact with the public, unless he took a front country job.
So he was going to spend the summer living in a 14x14 foot tower.
He was going to be a fire lookout.
Beyond the obvious job duties of watching for fires, tracking any that he saw, and noting fire conditions he would be responsible for trail maintenance in his zone, assisting search and rescue as needed, and enforcing the laws regarding recreation on Federal land. Granted, there were a lot less rules on Forest Service land than on National Park land, but there are still basic laws that apply pretty much wherever you are.
For the summer he had packed basic clothes, toiletries, his e-book reader loaded with books. Everything else would be provided in his tower or during resupply drops throughout the summer. If he found that he had forgotten anything he could request it in the next supply drop. He had considered packing a bottle of liquor, to wean himself off he said, but had ultimately decided against it. The summer was about fresh starts and looking forward instead of back. And that meant no drinking.
And the contract he had signed stipulated that no mind-altering substances were allowed due to the nature of the job. Not that Ross had ever been one to follow the rules.
But he did leave the bottle of vodka sitting on his counter at home. He had filled its spot in his back with a bottle of lemonade.
He had stayed in a motel room the night before so that he would not be making this hike in the dark. He had timed it so that he arrived shortly after sunrise when the air was still cool. He hoped to be at the tower before mid-day.
He was less than a mile in and he was already drenched in sweat and his heart and lungs felt shot.
He was bent over with his hands on his knees gasping for breath with noises that he was embarrassed of even with no one else around.
Ross groaned and straightened himself. He checked his location on the map, and he had gone a little less than three-quarters of a mile. And it was only going to get steeper from here according to the topography lines.
“Fuck.”
He knew he had not really done anything active in a while, but he had way overestimated his physical fitness. He planted his hands on his hips and arched his back trying to relieve the nagging pain in his mid-back.
It was still fairly quiet. He watched a squirrel dig small holes and bury bits of food.
There was a woodpecker in the distance. A few sparrows flitted much closer. He could hear the creaking of unseen widowmakers. Ross’ breathing was the loudest sound.
He adjusted the straps of his pack and set off again.
There was no turning back at this point. There was just arriving and having a wash sooner or later.
He did not make it by mid-day, but he did arrive at the tower around dinner time. Those final flights of stairs were nearly the death of him. At the top there was a balcony that ran all the way around his station. The windows that covered every wall were covered up. Removing the boards and storing them in the storage shed was the first thing that he would do in the morning. For now he just unlocked the door and let himself in.
The tower did have electricity. The overhead light was just a bare bulb. Once the light was on he could see the 196 square feet that he will be living in for the next 4 months. There’s a small fridge tucked under a stretch of countertop that contains a half stove and a small sink. There’s a coffee maker tucked into the corner. There’s a desk by the door, a small bookcase, a dresser, the bed, and a table in the centre. Everything is covered with a layer of dust. There are cobwebs in the corners. And Ross is pretty sure he heard small claws on the floor when he turned the light on, mouse, chipmunk, squirrel, or rat will move out soon after he starts to settle in.
He flips the mattress down and makes it up with some of the stored bedding from a cupboard. Too tired to bath, eat, or do anything productive he falls asleep. It is the first time in a long time that he has not fallen asleep with the warm, calming thrum of alcohol running through his veins.
“Hey!”
Ross rolled over and pulled the pillow over his face.
“It’s 7:30, princess. Time to wake up and make coffee.”
Ross sat up frowning. There was no cell service out here, he had checked. So where was that voice coming from? There was no one else there. But the bright sun was already peeking through the gaps around the edges of the boards.
“Hello? Poldark?
Ross looked in the direction of the voice. It was the desk. He walked over to it without bothering to put on any clothes. Scowling, sleep still muddling his brain, he stared at the surface of the desk before spotting the two way radio that was sitting in its charger. He picked it up and depressed the button, “Hello. Who is this?”
“You’re up!”
Ross winced at the chipper voice. “Yeah. No thanks to you,” Ross grumbled.
“How’d you even know I was here? I didn’t have to be on site for another two days.”
“I saw your light last night.”
Ross looked at the still covered windows. He should probably wear pyjamas from now on. He had assumed that no one would see him out here. “That’s not creepy at all.”
“Watching things is literally in our job title.”
“Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.” Ross set the radio down so he could get the coffee maker going. If he was going to be up this early he was definitely going to need a few cups of coffee.
“So you seem to know who I am. Who are you?” Ross asked while the coffee percolated at the speed of molasses in January.
“I’m given a list of the other Lookouts each season. It helps get the ball rolling. I’m your point of contact if anything goes wrong or you need something.”
“Fair. You didn’t answer my question.”
“Oh! I’m Hawkins. I’m manning Lookout Charlie this year.”
“Well, Hawkins. If it’s alright with you I’m going to have my coffee and then get the tower cleaned out and prepped.”
“Have fun. And don’t forget to let me know if anything needs fixed or something. There should be a packet on your desk along with a book.”
“Will do,” Ross grumbled.
He dropped the radio back in its charging cradle. He dug a pair of underwear from his bag. Half of the bag’s contents ended up all over the floor, but he was not going to deal with that or anything else before his coffee.

Prompt? Yes? I always love some 00Q so. Long weekend after being too long at work. No angst if possible? Thank you <3
Thank you so much for sending in such a sweet and soft request, writing this was immensely cathartic <3
***
Q looked down at their bags, going over his mental checklist to make sure they had packed everything; they would be gone only for the weekend and even if they forgot something they could survive without it but still, Q would rather not realise in the middle of Scotland highlands that he had forgotten his laptop charger or his spare glasses.
“Cats are in the car”
Q leaned into the arms around his waist, tilting his head to the side so that he could smile up at James “Thank you. How did it go?” wrestling the cats in their carriers always tended to be a bloody business; he wouldn’t have put any of them through the ordeal for such short stays if the cats hadn’t loved Skyfall Lodge but they did - much to James’ chagrin who ended up taking upon himself the duty of getting the little beasts ready for travelling.
“Let’s just say that I survived, hmm?” the agent hummed against Q’s forehead, kissing it tenderly.
He didn’t know when Skyfall had become their go-to relaxing retreat for when they couldn’t afford to fuck off and out of England for at least a week. They could have easily bought a chalet in the Cotswolds or Cornwall, somewhere they could make new and fresh memories without the ghosts of the past haunting them. For crying out loud, Skyfall hadn’t even been fully renovated yet: while the fire damage to the structure had been repaired, most of the rooms were still barren and inhospitable - if not downright inhabitable - despite the fact that almost two years had already passed from Silva’s attack upon his ancestral home. Q was partly to be blamed for it: the younger man had been strangely adamant about the fact that they should personally see to the refurbishing of the stately house - together. Clearly, it was rare enough that they managed to get day offs or holidays at the same time and that had meant that the renovations proceeded at a snail’s pace.
Sometimes James wondered about whether Q had intentionally slowed the process down to give him time to process the change - it didn’t sound so far-fetched, not when he knew the other man so well: seldomly Q left something to chance, he usually always had a reason for doing things in a certain way.
Sometimes James wondered about whether Q was right, if that had been his intention: watching his home burn up in the night had bothered him more than he had ever thought it would; realising that there were things that had been lost forever in the fire - family mementos, traces of what his parents had liked enough to purchase - had hurt even more and maybe, if Q hadn’t encouraged him to restore the house, he would have left it in ruins as a temple to his grief.
“Ready to go?”
“Yeah, go sit in the car”
Q had given up on pointing out that he could help carry the bags: if James wanted to do all the heavy lifting, he wasn’t going to complain one bit about it. He checked on the cats, cooing reassuringly at them (he knew better than putting his fingers through the carries grates, though: it wouldn’t be the first time they swept at him because they were irritated) and then he took his place on the passenger seat, his phone and a two well-loved furniture catalogues in his lap “Did you lock the door?”
James snorted at the question as he shut the door and put the car into gear “Who do you take me for?”
“A human being and not an infallible machine?”
Such a playful retort shouldn’t have made James feel as warm as it did: he rationally knew that Q didn’t see him as a monster, no matter the fact that he was frequently exposed to the very worst part of him whenever he was out in the field, but it just felt good to be reminded of it out aloud from time to time.
Christ, he really was getting soft.

Watch Want to drive your car all the way to the tip of the country on electricity alone? There's an app for that. Of course, what we didn't count on was a hay bale fire in the road, no charger at our destination and doing it all without a mirror. The electric adventure is very much here and now. The plan was to take the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE from London, over 300 miles, to Lands End in Cornwall. Can that be done quickly using fast chargers? Can you just hop in and go without a tap-to-pay electric charging station card? And can the car actually do all that while you stay comfortable? These were a few of the questions that pushed us to test this car to its long range limits. When we got in the car, we thought this electric Jag would banish fuel cars to the past, but we didn't expect to never look back literally. But as we adjusted the rear view mirror it dropped out of the car – no looking back at all then. It spent the rest of the journey in the glove box. While this was a.. video

New Post has been published on Lamarque Ford - Ronnie Logues
New Post has been published on http://ronnielogues.com/metairie-ford-dealer-talks-about-fords-in-the-movies/
Fords in The Movies
With the cold weather repeatedly sweeping through New Orleans, it’s the perfect time for Hot Chocolate, cuddling up in a blanket and watching movies. Many movies and TV programs have made a certain model of car famous. It’s difficult to think about The Dukes of Hazzard without thinking about the 1969 Dodge Charger. Ford cars have become quite popular movie stars over the years. Here are six famous Fords that you may recognize.
1962 Ford Anglia – Harry Potter
The iconic scene in Harry Potter where Ron and Harry are flying in the air is none other than a Ford. This iconic British Ford was produced from 1939-1967 and was introduced right around the time that England declared war on Germany. Despite the car having no engine, this car was stolen in 2006 from the film studio lot but was later found dumped at Carn Brae Castle in Cornwall.
1984 Ford Econoline – Dumb and Dumber
The legendary Mutt Cuts dog on wheels truck was a great disguise for a classic Ford: the 1984 Ford Econoline. This model of the van has been one of the most prolific fleet vehicles in North America and was produced from 1961 to 2012 in both the U.S and Canada. A variation of the Econoline van is the classic Canadian “short bus.”
1973 Torino – The Big Lebowski
In The Big Lebowski, this car was not glamorous at all. In between getting stolen, damaged and finally destroyed: it might not have been the best representation of such a great vehicle. The Torino was manufactured from 1962 to 1970 and appeared on TV in the popular show Starsky and Hutch as well as the 2008 film Gran Torino. The Big Lebowski required two Torinos, and one was passed on to be used in an episode of The X-Files.
1982 LTD Country Squire- National Lampoon’s Vacation
It was the perfect vehicle for a family going through hilarious struggles and adventures, and that’s why it carried the Griswolds across the country on their road trip to Wally World. The Country Squire was manufactured from 1951 to 1991 with George Barris, creator of the original Batmobile, getting credit for its design.
1973 Ford Falcon XBGT Coupe – Mad Max
The Mad Max car, also known as The Interceptor, is famous for blazing through the post-apocalyptic wasteland in the 1979 film that introduced Mel Gibson to the world. This was only available in Australia and was given extensive modifications for the film. The original Falcon as sold off for scrap, but instead of making it to the scrapyard, it was bought by a fan and restored to movie condition.
Ford 1948 – Grease
This car is automatic, systematic, HYDROMATIC and of course, a Ford. Greased Lightning is an iconic car that was chopped up, painted and fully hot-rodded. The 1948 Ford was one of the very few cars being produced by Ford in the time after WWII. It retailed for about $800, and the original Ford was sold in 2011 to an automobile museum in Illinois after its owner passed away in the process of having it restored.
There’s a reason why Fords are so popular in the movies. In addition to being the safest on the road, strong, and dependable: Fords just looks dazzling. If you are looking for a Ford Dealer and live in the Kenner, Metairie, or Greater New Orleans area: Lamarque Ford wants to help you look like a movie star today!

Yes I am aware that Stonehenge is not in Cornwall. However firstly I had such a wonderful experience that I wanted to share it and secondly I could find out very little information about the proceedings before I went so I thought that anyone thinking of going another year might like to read my top tips!
So this is it – the season has rolled round again and we are now heading towards Autumn and ultimately Winter. Not the best thought when we are all just getting used to the sun on our shoulders and the sand between our Cornish toes.
This solstice the beautiful weather meant that the longer days leading up to the 21st seemed even longer than usual. On the spur of the moment we decided to go and watch the sunrise over the stones of England’s most iconic ancient site.
We drove up from Cornwall the day before and joined an estimated 13,000 people for this special event. English Heritage’s information about the arrangements had not been too clear but we knew we could park there over night. I had rung and spoken to one of their advisors who was very helpful but couldn’t really answer all my questions as he had never been to the event himself.
It was a really wonderful experience and I am so glad that I took the time and trouble to do it.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The real highlight for me and something that I will always hold dear was being able to walk amongst and touch the stones, it was magical, especially leaning against them in the first light of the longest day and feeling the warmth coming from them from yesterdays sun. But this post is about the practicalities, as I said I found it really hard to get information, so here it is:
This is a free event. From 7pm solstice eve to 8am Solstice day there is no entrance charge to Stonehenge but it you bring a car/van you pay £15 to park overnight. (£5 for a motorbike.)
There are strict rules on entrance to the stones. No tents, no sleeping bags, no campfires, no drugs, no alcohol, no large bags and they do search you on the way into to the site. You can take blankets/yoga mat to sit on.
If you have a camper bring it, if you are in a car be prepared you have 3 choices: a) you can stay up all night, b) you can sleep on a blanket near to the stones or c) you can sleep in your car, (there is no camping/sleeping on the ground in the carpark).
The car park is very large but once its full its full.
Do bring plenty of water, food and warm clothes (just in case). There is one drinking water stand pipe for everyone and it is a long way from the car park.
There are buses through the night Amesbury.
Don’t forget a torch, ear plugs (if you are planning on sleeping!), in car-chargers for phones etc or spare batteries and toilet paper, there are plenty of porta loos but with 13,000 people . . .
The stones are about 3/4 mile walk from the car park but there is disabled parking near the visitor centre and a small bus runs from there.
This was a really chilled event, everyone just happy to be there so alcohol wasn’t something I missed, however although there was a very strict policy for around the stones I did see people drinking in the car park so if you need a night cap have it there.
There is limited food and hot drinks (some vegan & veggie) available from a handful of vans that stay open all night.
This felt a very safe event, there were police doing spot checks on cars arriving, bag checks and metal detectors and also a lot of security looking out for everyone and protecting the stones from over enthusiastic revellers.
Don’t be put of thinking you have to be a hippy or a druid. This event attracts a really diverse crowd, young and old, pagan and professional and I also saw lots of children. This is about celebrating life!
If you go with someone make a plan for when you loose each other – makes sure children have a mobile number written down or have an agreed meeting place.
Above all don’t forget to set your alarm: we left our car at 3.50am and with the big crowd all trying to get through the security if took around 45mins to get into the stones.
Enjoy it! It really is a blessing to experience these magnificent stones at such a wonderful moment!
Survival Guide to the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge Yes I am aware that Stonehenge is not in Cornwall. However firstly I had such a wonderful experience that I wanted to share it and secondly I could find out very little information about the proceedings before I went so I thought that anyone thinking of going another year might like to read my top tips!

Driving the Tesla Model S through the wide open—look out for autopilot 762hp + country streets = amazing. Be that as it may, on the off chance that you live in the farmland, is the Model S workable?
Reading about the Tesla Model S has turned out to be fairly monotonous. Yes, it's an electric auto. Yes, supercharging is free (well, for the individuals who purchased an auto before 2017). Yes, autopilot is truly cool (yet truly very alarming on nation streets). What's more, yes, the P90D (now the P100D) 0-60mph quickening is genuinely crazy.
However, when you get directly down to it, how vital are those things for regular utilize, and what number of them are simply technorgiastic ideas that drive loads of feature snaps?
I chose to acquire a Model S and discover.
Provincial range uneasiness
In the event that you frequently go by motorway in the modest bunch of nations that have a broad supercharger arrange, or your place of work has charging focuses, owning a Tesla is as of now significantly less difficult than you may might suspect. Go nervousness is positively a thing for the initial few days and weeks, yet it decreases with time.
Be that as it may, consider the possibility that you live in the wide open. Or, on the other hand, more probable, imagine a scenario in which you're a urban occupant and need to spend the end of the week driving your EV around Cornwall, East Anglia, Wales, Scotland, or whatever other locale that is more than 100 miles from the nearest supercharger?Well, as somebody who has been in the north-west corner of the Lake District and pondered, as an icy night fell, regardless of whether I had enough squeeze to return to a charger, oh my goodness: it's quite startling. I made it in one piece—I simply needed to dial back the quantity of 20-to-70mph impacts along those awesome Pennine passes.
Yet, I'm losing trace of what's most important. How about we begin toward the start.
To the Lake District and back once more
My undertaking was basic: drive from London to the Lake District, potter around for a couple days, perhaps do a touch of natural non-car ambulation (climbing), and come back to London. My steed was a fresh out of the box new Tesla Model S P90D (which has now been supplanted in the Tesla run by the P100D) with "over the top mode" and all the different driver-help mod cons.
The trip north, from my home in Brixton to the Wild Boar Inn in the Lake District, is around 280 miles—too yearn for a solitary charge (however the P100D may very well about oversee it). I ceased in Birmingham for lunch and to revive the auto, and afterward again at a supercharger in Warrington, close Liverpool. Looking back I didn't require the second top-up; it was simply go uneasiness from my first time driving a battery-just EV.Otherwise, the excursion go without episode. Autopilot functioned admirably on the motorways, giving me a chance to take in the dazzling scenes of the midlands and northern England. The auto's inherent satnav framework was alright, yet not incredible (more on that later). Before long, I in the long run sussed out the three (!) isolate extend estimators, and that decreased my range uneasiness—however regardless I can't work out why the "culminate" (i.e. impractical) max range is indicated conspicuously on the computerized dashboard.
When we achieved the lodging, there were two 7kW Tesla-marked "goal chargers" sitting tight for us. Goal charging is a genuinely new activity from Tesla that is intended to enlarge the system of superchargers, trying to decrease extend tension from straying from the beaten landing area way, and to open up new geographic ranges for drivers. Tesla gives the goals, which are for the most part lodgings or shopping ranges, with charging equipment, and after that the goal pays for power utilization. The quality of goal chargers shifts from 7kW up to 22kW, yet whichever way it ought to be sufficient to get a full battery charge overnight. At the season of composing, there are more than 100 goal charging areas in the UK, 1,000+ in the EU, and more than 3,000 around the world. This number is set to develop quickly, however: Elon Musk said in March 2016, at the Model 3 uncover, that there would be 15,000 charging units (i.e. most likely ~7,000 areas) before the finish of 2017.
It was really slick getting up every morning with full, free tank of "petrol."
