I never post personal stuff, but I adopted a heeler mix puppy 5 weeks ago from my local humane society and need to get all the puppy stuff out of my head.
Tumblr media
Rocket is 16 weeks old! He is well and truly into a fear period, wherein things like gloves or a book on the ground are suddenly very scary. However, the bathroom (his one pervasive uncomfy spot) is now totally fine. He hasn't had an accident in 3 days, which is a relief. He walks beautifully on leash and no longer runs at people to force them to be his new best friend; he waits for an indication that they maybe perhaps see him and approve of him, THEN he rockets over to make a new BFF. He is fantastic in the car and a pain in the ass to the cats. He is very very mouthy (there's the heeler) and is finding new and different ways to put his mouth on us. Today he discovered the corncob nibble, which is delightful and a serious upgrade from the puppyshark bitingbitingbiting routine.
Crate training is going fairly well. In early days he would panic as soon as I closed the crate door, now he goes in happily (for his special crate chew) and can hang out quietly for a few minutes. Idk how to get him to build up crate stamina or settle to sleep, though. I'll be reaching out to a trainer for tips.
Rocket doesn't nap as much as he once did, which is a travesty. I know at least part of this change must be because he is maturing, but I suspect teething is also to blame. He has generally been restless for the past two days and I can't wait for this stage to be over, poor guy.
His socialization window is closed and all I can do at this point is cross my fingers and hope I did well by him! We checked off lots of things on the old checklist but missed plenty, too. Didn't find anyone with a walker, for example, and didn't make it out to any farms with animals, but he's met all different sorts of people, been to cities, playgrounds, stores, construction zones, experienced all the textures and handling and grooming, and we've listened to soundtracks of doorbells and fireworks and barking dogs... I mean, we didn't adopt him until he was 11 weeks old, and I suspect he wasn't well socialized before then (just because he had skin issues that usually come from neglect), but he's been confident and happy to try new things from the moment we saw him.... I guess I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping we built on his strengths in the 5 weeks he's been with us. He did come with separation anxiety around sleep, which we've worked on. In the beginning he needed to be touching us at all times to sleep. We worked on getting him to settle back to sleep without touching, then falling asleep without touching, and now we're working on sleeping on the floor. He can now settle and sleep in his dog bed, so that's a win. I mean, he's currently back to "hold me hold me I'm a baby" but I strongly suspect that's due to teething.
Things to work on: 1. building up crate endurance, 2. decreasing separation anxiety.

*after giving mondo a grilled corncob yesterday, kaito's been banned from entering the biker's room! and if he tries to get in, a ferocious chuck will intercept him and give him some squeaky barks and frantic, little heel nips until he leaves! and if he doesn't, then chuck will... take off with one of his slippers, which is what's happened as kaito's currently running through the house with just one on as he chases the tiny puppy!!*
Phanty was still laughing to him over what happened, yesterday. How he took a mouth full of cornburger with no regrets, and hearing that Kaito was apparently banned from entering the biker's room. From behind the corner of the wall, he watches in amusement as Kaito tries to enter the room, but fails when Chuck intervenes! "He even deployed Chuck as a guardian of the door....!"
Tumblr media
He comments to himself with a snicker, knowing exactly what he's going to try doing later, to see if he can break through!! Then when Chuck grabs one of his slippers and runs off-"Oh-!!" He wheezes, and quickly steps out the way if they began running in that direction!!!
"Woah hoooh!!! You should worry about the slipper later, the guard left the gate! Hehehe!!" And starts following right behind to enjoy the show some more!!!

Tips To Improve Your Landscaping
Landscaping is a wonderful way to add value and beauty to your home. It can also be a great way to spend time with family and friends, or just by yourself. With the right plants and hardscape features, you can create an outdoor space that's both functional and beautiful. Here are some simple tips for improving the look of your yard:
Tumblr media
Improve your soil.
Soil is a living thing. It's not just dirt, it's a complex ecosystem that can be improved by adding organic matter such as compost and mulch, or fertilizers like manure. The nutrients in these materials will help your plants thrive while also improving the soil's ability to retain water.
Soil health is important because it affects how well your landscaping performs over time. If you have good quality soil and maintain it regularly then you'll get better results than if you don't take care of your yard!
Plant a tree.
Planting a tree is an excellent way to improve your landscaping. Trees provide shade, cooling and oxygen. They can also help you save on energy costs by reducing the need for air conditioning in hot weather and heating in cold weather. Trees can also reduce pollution by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles and factories, thereby helping to clean the air we breathe. In addition to their environmental benefits, trees add value to your property because they increase its curb appeal while providing privacy from neighboring properties or street traffic.
Add a water feature.
There are many ways to add a water feature to your landscape. The simplest way is to install a fountain that can be placed in the center of your garden or on an outside wall.
A more complex option would be to create a water garden, which includes plants and other elements such as rocks, boulders and sandstone statues. It's important that these elements are chosen based on the theme of your garden so they look natural together. You could also consider installing an infinity pool if you have enough space for it!
Plant the right plants.
Planting the wrong plants is an expensive and time-consuming mistake. And not only that, it can be dangerous to your health, illegal, aesthetically unpleasing and just plain annoying to deal with later on down the road.
The most common way people mess this up is by planting annual flowers instead of perennials in their landscape beds. Annuals die off every year so you'll have to replace them every spring--and they cost more than perennials anyway! Perennials grow back year after year without any additional work on your part (except for pruning). They're also better looking because they don't need staking or deadheading like annuals do; they just keep looking good all season long until autumn rolls around again when they start getting ready for winter dormancy (which means no more blooms).
Use mulch.
Mulch is a layer of material that is placed on top of the soil. It helps to retain moisture in the soil, which reduces watering needs, and keeps weeds from growing. There are many types of mulches available: bark chips, shredded leaves, ground corncobs and grass clippings are just a few examples.
You can buy pre-made bags or containers at your local gardening store or make your own by shredding large pieces yourself with an electric leaf blower (or by hand if you're feeling ambitious).
Choose the right soil for your plants.
When you're choosing the right soil for your plants, it's important to consider the type of plant you have and its needs. For example, some plants prefer loamy soils that are well drained but not too sandy or clay-like. Others need more water than others and will thrive in sandy soil with good drainage.
Soil types include: Clay; Sand; Loam (a mix of sand and clay). Clay soils are heavy, compacted and often hard to work with because they don't drain well--they tend to be very fertile though! Sand soils drain quickly but lack nutrients needed by most plants so they aren't as good as loam (or similar mixes) for growing things like vegetables or flowers unless you add compost regularly.
Mulch protects the ground from erosion and weeds.
Mulch is a layer of organic or inorganic material that's applied to the ground around trees, shrubs and other plants. Mulch helps to protect the soil from erosion and weeds by retaining moisture in the soil, while also serving as a source of nutrients for plants. There are many different types of mulch available today: bark chips (natural), wood chips (uncomposted), stone pieces or plastic sheeting. The best results occur when you apply 2 inches or less of any type of mulch material evenly over your landscape beds each year--ideally in fall or spring when plants are dormant but before new growth begins to emerge from dormancy next summer!
Plant native plants and seasonal flowers.
Native plants are those that grow naturally in your area. They're adapted to the local climate, soil and other environmental conditions. Native plants are often more resistant to insects and diseases than exotic species, so they require less maintenance.
When you choose native plants, you'll also be attracting pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds while supporting wildlife like birds that feed on their nectar or eat insects attracted by the flowers' bright colors. These critters will help keep your garden healthy by pollinating other plants nearby--it's a win-win!

The Thing About Darktown
Just gonna post my Secret Santa fic for @jarinodragonage over here, too, now that she’s seen it. ;D
 ---
“Stop rubbing, you’ll make it worse!”
“It itches!”
“Better that than festering and falling off- Hawke!” Aveline growled in exasperation as the younger woman flinched away, half-done bandages fluttering. “You know, this wouldn’t even be an issue if you’d brought Anders.”
Leigh snorted wryly, rubbing the injury in question with a fervor that hastened the unraveling of the bandages. “There’s a sentence I never thought I’d hear you say.”
“Why not?” Aveline narrowed her eyes and moved after her, cornering Leigh against a boulder and getting a better grip on her arm to redo the patching up that was all but undone now. “Most people would consider it wise to bring a healer if you have one at your disposal. Especially given you usually include him on your... adventures.”
Leigh grinned, hearing the ‘mis’ Aveline clearly wanted to slap in front of the last word. “You’re not enjoying girls’ night out?” she said drolly, waving to where Isabela and Merrill were examining what remained of their foes. “I’m just happy the bad guys are dead and we aren’t.” She grimaced as Aveline pulled the bandages just a little tighter. “Aveline! Are you trying to fix my arm or amputate it?!”
“The former,” Aveline said sternly. “But if the bandages slide, you may wind up needing the latter. There.” She tied off the bandages, tucked the trailing ends under so it wouldn’t snag, and let go of Leigh’s arm. “That should hold you until you can get it seen to, at least.”
“My hero,” Leigh said with a cheeky wink and darted over to help Isabela rifle the corpses for anything good.
“Not leaking any more?” Isabela asked playfully, shifting so Leigh could crouch next to her.
Leigh snorted. “Not for now, at least.” She tested her range of motion and wiggled her fingers. “Kinda stiff, throbs a little, but I can make it back to Kirkwall without drawing down wolves on us in addition to... whatever these gentlemen were supposed to be.” She rolled the body at her feet on its stomach with her good hand and started checking the pouches around the back of the belt. Nothing more valuable than a small collection of pretty pebbles.
“Good to hear,” Isabela laughed. “I’d rather not have anything to do with wolves if we can help it.”
“Oh, but they’re so pretty t’ watch when they hunt,” Merrill piped up, then wrinkled her nose as she processed the context of the remark. “Though they’d be huntin’ us, I suppose, wouldn’t they? Best to avoid that.”
“My thoughts exactly, kitten,” Isabela said with a wink. It only took a few more minutes of searching for her and Leigh to be satisfied they’d found everything of any value. There wasn’t much; this lot were clearly poor and desperate. (Of course, they’d have to be, to attack such a clearly dangerous group as the four of them.) Pretty baubles, a few coppers, and some rusty weapons were the extent of “treasure” they carried. If the poor bastards hadn’t attacked them first, Leigh would have felt bad about killing them. Under the circumstances, however, sympathy was a little hard to come by. She rubbed at the bandages again and pretended she didn’t hear Aveline sigh.
---
To Leigh’s vast relief, they were not hassled by wolves or anything else on their way back to Kirkwall, despite the setting sun and lengthening shadows. Her arm was starting to really ache, and she wasn’t sure how much help she’d be in a fight. Still, she waved off the others’ concern when they reached the city, insisted they go their own ways. “I think I can make it to Anders’ clinic by myself,” she said glibly when Aveline offered to come with her. She turned a grin toward Isabela and Merrill. “Save me a seat when you get to the Hanged Man? I’ll be over when I’m done.”
“You got it, sweet thing,” Isabela laughed, then looped her arm through Merrill’s as they headed for the tavern.
Aveline hesitated a moment longer; until Leigh made a shooing motion toward the Viscount’s Keep. “Go on, Avs, I know walking Darktown is more exciting than all the paperwork sitting on your desk, but I’ll be okay. Promise.”
Aveline shook her head and huffed (yet) another sigh. “Just... be careful, Hawke.”
“The very model of,” Leigh promised with a glib wave. “See you around, guard captain.”
Sh waited until she was well out of sight from all of them before rubbing hard at the bandages again, directly over the stinging gash across her bicep. It itched, worse than well, pretty much anything she could remember.
“Good thing it’s not too far to the clinic,” she muttered, balling her hand into a fist as the wound started to throb more pointedly, keeping time with her heartbeat.  “Sooner I take care of this, the better.”
Leigh knew the safest route through Darktown to Anders’ clinic. She also knew the fastest route through Darktown to Anders’ clinic. This injury was enough of an annoyance that today she went for speed over safety. She could handle herself, after all, and was very clearly armed. She doubted anyone would fuck with her in the first place, and she’d deal with them if they did.
Still, she kept her eyes open and on her surroundings as she walked, tried not to let her thoughts wander.
It’s a good thing those were just common bandits, still wormed its way through her brain. Skilled as they all were, she was less accustomed to fighting alongside Aveline, Isabela, and Merrill. They’d lacked the synergy she had gotten used to. There were times it was as if she and Fenris read each others’ minds in a fight, they knew Varric’s rhythm and could avoid being skewered by the bolts meant for their enemies, and Aveline had been correct--it was very useful having a healer along.
She missed a step and almost tumbled. Right. No wandering thoughts, Leigh reprimanded herself as she caught her balance. She’d drawn some attention from a knot of hard-faced individuals with her near-fall, but fortunately her cloak hung over the evidence she was wounded. Still, no reason to linger.
Leigh curled her hand around the hilt of a dagger when one of the loungers kept staring her direction a little too long, but the sense of eyes on her faded when she rounded the next corner, so she relaxed her grip. She kept her pace brisk, and the wariness had faded somewhat by the time she passed the [waste] chute that marked halfway. While she didn’t rub the still-itching wound again, she did press her hand over it and bite her lip. The pressure felt good. She’d have to mention that to Anders, see if it meant anything bad he should know about before healing her up.
It was after the next corner everything went to shit. She rounded it too tightly, and her injured arm rammed against the edge precisely where the two walls met. Leigh let out an instinctual yelp at the burst of pain that flared through her arm and set stars dancing behind her eyes. She gritted her teeth to clamp down on it, but the damage was done.
“Need a hand, lovely?” The speaker, a rangy elf with a shaved head and facial tattoos, leaned against the wall and flashed an indolent grin.
“I’m fine, thanks,” Leigh shot back with a decent tinge of snark. “Just tad clumsy.”
“Sure? Darktown’s no place to be wanderin’ alone.” The contrast of the deep red tattoos curving up his cheekbones made the glint in his eyes seem all the more dangerous. And as he spoke, two other figures--another elven man and a human woman--sidled up with a faux-casual air that had goosebumps prickling Leigh’s arms.
“That’s why I’m trying to get it over with, Red-- Can I call you Red?” she said with a cheeriness she didn’t really feel, sizing them up as she spoke. Red had picked his spot well; even leaning against the wall he was close enough to grab her unless she was very fast. The other elf would be in the way if she went for her original path, and the woman now stood just enough to the side she could back up either of her friends handily.
“Oh, a funny one,” Red chuckled, not deigning to comment on her assigning him a nickname. “Y’know, it might go faster--definitely safer--if you hand Cob there” --a nod toward his fellow elf--”all your coin.”
“It might, huh?” Her arm twinged, and Leigh shifted the odds a few points in their favor. Good thing I tend to beat the odds... “If I had any on me, I’d be sure to share it with such a beleaguered innocent as... Cob.” She arched her brows toward the elf. His scraggly blond hair and jaundiced complexion actually did bear passing resemblance to a corncob. “Sadly, I think I left my coinpurse in my other cloak.”
“Bullshit,” the woman snarled, hand drifting to the short-bladed sword. “Who the fuck travels without any money?”
“Me, the fuck,” Leigh returned brightly, shifting just a little. If she got very lucky and timed it just right, she could probably slip away. “But if you don’t believe me, you can look for yourself.”
Her good hand yanked the clasp of her cloak and pulled it free to toss toward Red and the woman as Leigh lunged low and outside past Cob.
He snagged her elbow and tried to hold her back, but she tore free, stumbled a few steps before catching her balance.
Just in time to trip over the booted foot that appeared in front of her ankles. Leigh cursed under her breath and lurched semi-sideways as she was forced to balance again. Her instincts proved good; a pitted blade swung uncomfortably close to her shoulder. She freed one of her daggers with her good hand and spun to parry the next blow. She was just barely fast enough to redirect it into the moldering wall. Her other fist was already swinging after it, and she connected with the female thug’s cheekbone and sent her reeling into Cob. Pain flared in Leigh’s knuckles and up her arm, but at least she’d gained some breathing room--
The hairs at the nape of her neck prickled. She jerked sideways and there was a frustrated growl as Red’s swing went wide.
“Amber, Cob, get it together and help me gut this bitch!” he barked as he lunged forward in another swipe at Leigh’s midriff. Apparently he’d meant it literally.
The two of them grumbled as they recovered, glaring at her and circling to pen her in.
Leigh fought back a grimace and ran through her options. What few she had.
She feinted left, then went straight, ramming a shoulder into Cob’s chest and her dagger cutting a shallow scarlet line across Amber’s arm. They pivoted after her quickly, but at least she wasn’t pinned against a wall any more.
Red lunged forward, and even as she parried his dagger, he punched the bandaged portion of her arm. Hard.
Leigh spat a curse and slammed her elbow into his jaw. Her dagger slashed across his cheek as she followed through, and she kicked the inside of his knee for good measure.
Three on one meant no respite, however, and even as she spun away from Red, Amber closed in. Leigh ducked under the blow aimed at her head, but wasn’t quite fast enough to avoid the other woman’s buckler. The edge of the small shield caught her in the jaw with a crack.
Leigh ran her tongue over the new cut, tasted copper, and lunged. For Red, not Amber.
None of them were expecting that, and Red’s reflexes were just a little too slow as a result. He didn’t get his blades up in time to parry and Leigh’s dagger sank in the hollow of his collarbone.
He gave an airless gasp, then a wet cough, and dropped.
Crimson flew in an arc from Leigh’s dagger as it came free and she spun to face the other two. Amber and Cob charged her from opposite directions and she backpedaled, angling to the right and pivoting she she could gouge the back of Cob’s thigh as he passed her.
She didn’t cut deep enough to hit anything vital, but he still toppled with a curse. He lashed out and the pommel of his dagger slammed into the side of her knee.
Combined with Leigh’s momentum, it took her down and sent her rolling into the wall. She banged her head hard enough to see stars, and when they cleared, Amber was standing over her, grip tight on her sword and a sneer curling her lips
She raised the blade even as Leigh scrambled mentally for an out. “You could’ve avoided this if you’d just done as you were tol-”
The gloating words cut off, her shoulders jerking forward as the front six inches of a greatsword emerged from her chest.
“She’s never been good at that,” Fenris said dryly as he pulled his sword free, gaze shifting from the slain thug to Leigh, concern and amusement mingled in his eyes. “despite ample evidence it is not always a bad thing.”
“What can I say, I’m a rebel,” Leigh returned glibly, pushing herself up to a sitting position and leaning her head back against the wall. “Not that I’m unhappy to see you, Fenris, but where the fuck did you come from?”
He chuckled and let his sword hang loosely in one hand as he offered her the other. “The Hanged Man. I was meeting Donnic for drinks, but Isabela mentioned you’d been injured-”
“And you wanted to check on me?” Leigh teased, grinning playfully as she took his hand. “I’m touched.”
Fenris snorted and hauled her up, so fast it almost felt like flying. “I figured you would head for the clinic,” he corrected. He maintained a steadying grip on her forearm when she wobbled. “I wanted to ensure your safe arrival, knowing what Darktown is like.” He punctuated the words with a glare at Cob.
“My hero,” Leigh said, with a little more sincerity than when she’d tossed the same words at Aveline. “Normally I’d protest I’m a big girl and can handle myself, but today I think I’ll go with ‘thanks for the rescue’.”
Fenris nodded, then tipped his head toward Cob, who now sat glaring up at them with a hand pressed to the back of his thigh. “And what of him?”
Leigh shrugged, not liking the soreness already settling in her muscles. I really need to see Anders. “Eh, just leave him be.”
“What?!” Cob barked. “You kill my friends, cripple me, and you’re just going to leave?!”
“Hey, you lot attacked me, asshole,” Leigh fired back, grasping Fenris’ arm to hold him back when his markings flickered and he tensed. “After I tried to avoid a fight. You’re lucky I’m not askin’ him to finish you off. My cloak’s somewhere around here; you can have that to patch yourself up. But I need to be on my way. After all, it’s not safe to linger in Darktown.”
She went to make a dramatic exit, and her knee almost gave out. Fenris caught her, pulled her back upright, and only paused to sheath his sword before draping her arm around his shoulders for support.
“Thanks,” Leigh whispered, limping heavily as they walked away.
“You are most welcome,” Fenris replied, in that soft, low murmur that sent warmth curling all the way to her toes. “Let’s get you to Anders.”
---
The rest of the walk was uneventful, which Leigh credited to the protective air radiating from Fenris. Anders was, thankfully, not busy when they arrived and immediately turned his attention to fussing over her. He and Fenris exchanged the occasional sniping remark, as the latter insisted on ‘hovering’ nearby, no doubt concerned about the fresh blood seeping through Leigh’s bandages.
The battering from her alley scuffle was easily healed--and she did mention Cob to Anders, just in case he’d feel inclined to help the man. But Anders frowned when he unwrapped the bandages around her arm. “Hawke, this is from today?”
“Just a couple hours ago,” Leigh nodded. “We were already on our way back to the city, and I headed here soon as we made it. Why-” She turned to look and grimaced at the angry red edges to the wound. “Oh.”
“It’s good you came straight here,” Anders said, then glanced at Fenris. “Well, nearly. There must’ve been something on the blade, deliberately or not.” He murmured a quiet spell, fingers tracing through the air before he laid his hand over the wound.
The spell rolled through her with a cleansing prickle that gave her goosebumps for a minute before fading. But the near-insufferable itching was gone. Anders’ hand flexed again, and healing magic chased the cleansing spell to knit flesh back together.
Leigh’s slumped with relief. “Thanks, handsome,” she winked as she gave that shoulder an experimental roll. “Much better.” All better, there wasn’t even a scar.
“Always happy to help,” Anders said with a tired smile. “Your knee might still be sore,” he cautioned as she started to stand. “You might want to take it easy for a day or two.”
“I will accompany you,” Fenris offered, soon as she’d made it to her feet. “To be safe, of course.”
“Of course,” Leigh chuckled. Her knee seemed alright, but she’d never pass up his company. She thanked Anders again, then she and Fenris headed out.
“Hawke, it’s this way,” Fenris commented when she walked past the turn that would lead back to Hightown.
“I’m going to the Hanged Man, not home,” Leigh said with a smile and a shrug. “Promised I’d join ‘Bela and Merrill. And I can take it easy there just as well as at home.” Better; at the Hanged Man she’d be around people. Friends.
His shoulders tensed, and she could almost see his overprotective instincts winding up, before he relaxed and nodded. “I shall accompany you there, then, instead.”
Leigh snickered. “That worried about me tumbling in a ditch somewhere, are you?”
“There are plenty to choose from in this city,” Fenris deadpanned. “Or perhaps I wish to offer back up in case anyone is fool enough to attack you.”
“Oh, thank you. Whatever the reason, I’ll happily take your company.”
She hadn’t really meant to say it, no matter how glib her tone, and he clearly didn’t know how to reply, so they walked in almost-awkward silence for a minute.
“So, how many poor sods did you inadvertently terrorize on your way down through Darktown?” Leigh finally asked, playfully nudging his shoulder, before the silence became too much.
“I... do not know,” Fenris admitted. He glanced at her. “I was too preoccupied to notice.”
Oh. She bit her lip and cleared her throat. “Bet you get turned into a phantom in children’s stories now,” she teased, struggling to make the words light-hearted. “You know, the ghost who’ll snatch them away if they get out of bed in the middle of the night.”
“Just what I’ve always wanted,” he said dryly, and Leigh couldn’t help but snort a laugh.
“It would fit, though,” she said, flashing a mischievous grin. “You glow, you... pass through things--or people, at least.. Practically writes itself. I should tell Varric.”
Fenris groaned, but there was something half-hearted about it, and she caught the smile he tried to hide. “I’m certain he has better things to do.”
“Better, maybe. But not more fun.”
Their easy pace during the conversation had carried them to within a stone’s throw of the tavern, and Leigh paused, turning to rest a hand on Fenris’ arm. “All joking aside, I am truly grateful you came swooping to my rescue.”
Fenris caught her gaze and held it as he took a breath, then slowly exhaled.  “Anytime, Leigh.”
He leaned ever so slightly into her touch, then stepped away and headed inside the Hanged Man. Leigh’s hand curled into a loose fist, and she closed her eyes to take a deep breath before trailing after him.
Isabela and Merrill greeted her cheerfully, and Leigh was all too happy to let their company and the general tavern cacophony distract her from... anything else.
(She caught a glimpse of silver-white hair across the bustling space and hastily focused back on Isabela’s challenge to a hand of Wicked Grace.)
Anyone else.

From the Archives: Fevers
Tumblr media
Up until about fifty years ago, and much later in some remote places in the Ozark Mountains, a fever was a deadly foe for anybody that caught one. Folk doctors have developed a lot of successful ways of breaking fevers, some involving plant medicines other’s involving what might appear to be works of “hocus pocus,” but regardless, these cures have stuck around because of how effective they are. If they didn’t work no one would remember them. So I’d like to give some examples of these fever cures from a few different traditions.
Ozarks
Vance Randolph’s Ozark Magic and Folklore
“Dr. W. O. Cralle, of Springfield, Missouri, writes me that some backwoods friends of his have used a tea of onions and wild lobelia with great success, in cases of ‘pneumony fever.'” “Boneset tea is a favorite remedy for chills, fever, and ague. A tea made of elderberry roots is good, too. Some people have great confidence in blade-fodder tea, especially if the fodder has been kept in a dry place. Seneca-root or rattlesnake weed (Senega) is said to make a mighty fine chills-and-fever medicine. The unfermented juice of the little wild possum grapes is supposed to cure malaria. Uncle Jack Short of Galena, Missouri, says that he used to drink gallons of peach-bark tea every fall for his ‘ager’; also a tea made by boiling sheep manure, with a little spicewood added to kill the unpleasant taste. Fanny D. Bergen observes that ‘in central Missouri one is recommended to take for ague a whole pepper-corn every morning for seven consecutive mornings.’ The plant known as fever-root (Corallorhiza odontorhiza) is also used to reduce fevers and is a mild sedative as well. A gentleman in Cyclone, Missouri, tells me that his family made a ‘chill remedy’ that was in great demand; the exact formula was kept secret, he says, but the main ingredient was crushed burdock seeds.” “To cure malaria, chills, fever, and ague all you need is a hickory peg about a foot long. Drive it into the ground in some secluded place, where you can visit it unseen. Do not tell anyone about this business. Go there every day, pull up the peg, blow seven times into the hole, and replace the peg. After you have done this for twelve successive days, drive the peg deep into the earth so that it cannot be seen, and leave it there. You’ll have no more chills and fever that season. If the cure doesn’t work, it means that you have been seen blowing into the hole, or that you have inadvertently mentioned it to somebody.” “Some families are accustomed to treat chills-an’-fever by placing an ax under the patient’s bed. Since this procedure is also used in 'granny-cases' to relieve the pains of childbirth, there are many jokes and wisecracks about it. I once went to see a very fat man, who had malarial fever. He stayed in bed as the doctor ordered and took the doctor’s medicine, but his wife held to the old superstition and insisted on putting an ax under the bed. I noticed this when I came into the room, and asked: ‘What’s that ax doing there? You expecting burglars?’ He laughed and clasped both hands over his great paunch, twisting his face in a ghastly imitation of a woman in labor. ‘Naw,’ he answered, “just expectin’!'” “Many people think it is a good idea to burn feathers from a black hen under the bed of a fever patient. I have seen the feathers of black chickens dried and saved in little paper bags for this purpose. For night sweats some hillfolk put a pan of water under the bed; I have known the wife of an M.D. to do this in her own home, without the doctor’s knowledge. May Stafford Hilburn says that ‘if the case was persistent we sprinkled black pepper in the water. Usually in three nights an improvement could be noticed, but in some cases it might take a week. This remedy seldom failed. In fact, I do not know of a case where it did fail.'” Granny Gore
“‘Had lots of cures for colds and pneumonia. One of them was smokin’ ’em with the cobs. You took and surrounded them with a steamin’ hot blanket and put smoking corncobs around them to smoke out the fever. Once’t a lady tal’ a doctor that she had tried smolcin’ ’em with the cobs, he asked what color she used, and she replied white. He tol’ her next time to use the red cobs. Then skunk oil an’ mutton taler was a good cure, and possum grease. Take a fresh kilt animal and render the grease from him, and rub thoroughly on the patient. Slippery elm bark tea is good. Bile the leaves of a slippery elm or the bark and drink the juices. Coal oil and honey is still used fer cough and pneumonia.'”
Louisiana Creole/Cajun
“Make a tea with elderflowers and drink that.” “When someone has a fever give them tea made with marsh elder. Give them a cup three times a day.” “Boil wormwood flowers, then put the water in a tub.  Heat it up, then put the person over the vapor. Make sure they’re covered well.” “Pick elderflowers on Saint John’s Day and then dry them in the sun. When they’re really dry make a tea with them and drink three small cups a day.” “You boil wild wormwood and make a tea, then you drink that three or four times a day.” “Some of us give malomé rouge. We boil that and take it three times a day. At the end of three days it will cut the fever.” “You take some red willow bark from off the side facing the setting sun. You put the bark in whiskey. Then you in put nine nails that have never been used and put in nine green coffee beans. Then you add a little bit of wormwood tea. Then you add two doses of quinine in there. Drink a spoonful of that tea three times a day.”

Is Olive Wood Good For Pipes?
The Aldo Velani olive wood pipe offered here is no exception, a smoked pipe with exceptional performance and unrivaled elegance. Mediterranean olive wood with exceptional unique veining for each pipe. Each pipe is naturally finished using carnauba wax - no artificial elements. Pipe bowls are usually made from rosehip, sea foam, cob, pear, rosewood, or clay.
Although briar pipes are by far the most common wood pipes, a wide range of other woods have been used. Pipes can be made from corn cob, sea foam, olive wood, cherry wood, arbutus wood, ancient mortar, clay, and possibly other materials, but briar is considered the ideal pipe material. Rosehip is the most commonly used wood material for a variety of reasons. Brog, most of our pipes are made from pear and briar wood, as we believe these are the best woods for pipes.
Pear wood is very dense and is a hard wood that is great for making a pipe that you will be able to wear for years to come. When your pipe is smoked, briar wood absorbs the moisture from the tobacco and the flavors of the pipe are slightly better than cherry wood. As others before me have said, olive wood pipes initially give a cup of tobacco a very nutty flavor.
While many other types of materials change the flavor, aroma, and overall appeal of pipe tobacco (not in a positive way), clay retains the rich, full-bodied taste of tobacco in its natural state. Morta, or partially petrified wood, was used in limited quantities in the manufacture of smoking pipes. The result is a very strong and hard wood, making it an ideal choice for pipe production. The result is a very strong and hard wood, making it an ideal choice for pipe production.
Black walnut creates a very strong woody smoke and provides intense flavor on the short side of bitterness. Wood is widely considered to be the best material both in terms of pipe life and the smoking it offers. Cherry wood is probably best known for its qualities in providing excellent smoke for smoking meat and was originally considered the material of choice for smoking pipes. Maple bark and shaving mulch is a natural and effective way to enrich your garden soil and also help retain moisture for your plants.
There are fewer major manufacturers of cherrywood pipes, but these include Ropp, which has an extensive line of natural cherrywood products carved into the wood and showing real bark, and Missouri Meerschaum Co., which is best known for its corncob pipes. Olive wood pipes are known for their amazing texture, and the inexpensive olive wood pipes from the Fe.Ros collection are no different.
Pre-staining is optional, but will result in a finished tube with higher grain contrast. Using a pipe cleaner, paint the entire pipe the color you want, working quickly so you don't end up with a painted surface. Make sure you have a firm grip on the tube and don't force it into the wheel too aggressively or it will break out of your hands and bounce all over the store (as Phil can attest MANY times).
One of the easiest ways to know if brass pipe is safe to use is to check its patina. This is why you should always make sure to only buy pure brass tubing.
I have made pipes that are different from traditional pipes and I rarely use them, even as shop pipes. If I get the chance, I will probably end up making a pipe out of Olive, Mort, etc. For those who have never owned or smoked a Wild Olive pipe, try to find one you like and buy it, you won't regret it. If you manage to buy a Jaubert pipe, regardless of the type of wood, it will not disappoint you.
I've smoked a lot since I got this pipe and decided to keep it as an English or Balkan pipe. Latakia smokes especially well, offering a more rounded flavor than some of my heather pipes. While not a work of art in itself, it is highly functional and produces a fragrant, refreshing smoke.
Comes with a classic straight pool table with black acrylic legs and matching wooden pipe stand. The look, natural wood and feel of the pipe brought me back to this pipe. Made in Italy, this is a great pipe even without the filter.
Olive trees are usually harvested only when they are too old to produce olives. These maples are great for smoking and wood burning, providing a nice uniform color and moderate levels of flavor.
In this case, I can almost smell my favorite green olives in the aroma of the new pipe. I am intrigued by the various African woods he uses to make his pipes. Good friend John Overdahl ordered some pipes from John and I love the look.
I recently took out my pipe and smoked it and wondered what happened to Johan. Tim told me he hadn't smoked a pipe since he was a teenager when he became interested again in the fall of 2002. forest construction. Tim lists some of his pipes on eBay, where his nickname is tcfullerpipes.
If, Johan, you are reading this review of your pipe, I hope you are well. I think I've perfected my technique this time, so I hope I can get some good shots without embarrassing her and kicking her out of the house. Photos were banned, so I figured I'd be smarter and hide some photos and videos using this method.
Rose hips from central Italy are used exclusively in the production of Figli di Federico Roveras pipes, with the obvious exception of the company's olive wood pipes. Only our most popular brands are listed here, such as the Fe.Ro Olive Wood tobacco pipes below. We use the very best materials available, make every traditional wood pipe fit for the task, and spice it up with only food-grade finishes that are non-toxic and withstand little heat.
Actual product packaging and materials may contain more and/or different information than displayed on our website. You should not use this information to self-diagnose or treat any health problem or disease.
Aldo Velani offers an elegant solution to this problem, yet an economical pipe that smokes well. Job's Bud of Steel pipes reinvent the reverse gourd and maybe even pipes as we know them.

SO, I was inspired by posts from @ankkalinna and @land-of-birds-and-comics to spend some of my extra money on a month’s digital subscription to DUCK COMICS~!
(Well, actually, it’s a sub to about 40 Danish magazines including 3 duck ones but it cost about the same as physical US comics, i’m not interested in collecting, and I’m learning Danish, so... )
I’ve only just begun reading (it’s slow-going bc I’m only to A2 in Danish if that)  but I’ve flipped through the pages and here are some Things I’ve Learned So Far:
There is a Beagle Boy with a beard called Dirk. He smokes a corncob pipe.
Gyro has a sweetheart :)
They actually put a full coat of feathers on their cartoon t-rex god bless
They still print Song of the South comics in Europe???
With few exceptions, every character besides the mains are dog-people. why. why are there only dog people in Duckburg?
I need to double down on my Danish bc apparently the sub gives me huge backlogs for all three magazines and there is so much to read aaaaaah
In short, if you like Ducktales, try the comics. You won’t regret.
(ive also been reading barks in english from readcomicsonline, and recommend that too. ^^  )

Herbs for Dream Pillows
Herbs to Avoid for Dream Pillows Artemisia (except for mugwort) should be avoided, as many kinds of artemisia can cause frightening dreams and, after waking, headaches. Bay, which sometimes causes headaches upon waking, can also add a grey-brown colour and violent quality to dreams. Fixatives are not recommended for use in dream blends. These include cellulose (processed corncobs) and orrisroot. Since they contain some fragrance they may change the texture of the dream blend, making the results unpredictable. Orrisroot can also cause headaches upon waking. Oils of any kind are not recommended. Oils are highly concentrated and can overpower other herbs. Russian tarragon can cause frightening nightmares. Sage can create a haunting feeling in dreams. However, garden sage and clary sage blossoms can be used in small amounts in dream blends. Tansy, which can cause violent and terrifying nightmares, can also produce headaches upon waking.
Plants in the Herbal Dream Garden
Many types of plants can be used in herbal dream pillows, but here are some of the most common and versatile. Click here to learn about plants in a Faery Garden and here for other uses for herbs. Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) -- Curtin's Healing Herbs of the Rio Grande suggest that in folklore the fragrance of aniseed keeps men from dreaming, but not women. It's useful in relaxing blends. Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) -- Fir needles are a pleasant addition to relaxing blends, good in combination with lavender, hops, and roses. They impart an outdoors feeling to dreams. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) -- In folklore it is said that combining sage and calendula blossoms will make dreams come true. Calendula, in small amounts, can add restfulness to a blend, and moderate more spicy ingredients. Catnip (Nepeta cataria) -- This herb has been used for centuries to ease babies' troubled sleep. Today, we use it in adult blends to induce relaxation and sleep. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) -- Chamomile is used for relaxation and pleasant dreams. People who are allergic to ragweed should probably avoid using this herb in their blends, as it sometimes causes similar reactions. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) -- Cinnamon has recently been proved by fragrance researchers to be one of the most erotic aromas for men. Cinnamon comes from the bark of a tropical evergreen tree. Use it sparingly in dream blends for an exotic, romantic texture. Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) -- Cloves add a hint of spiciness, especially when used with roses in romantic mixtures, but use them sparingly. Just 3 or 4 cloves in a blend is plentiful. Hops (Humulus lupulus) -- This herb is actually the flower from a perennial vine and there are several varieties, including some considered "bitter" and others "sweet". Sweet hop flowers are the ones for dreaming; they induce relaxation and peacefulness. Jasmine (Jasmine officinale or J. odoratissimum) -- The delicious fragrance of jasmine will almost encourage dreaming when you're awake! The dried flowers lend an exotic and romantic feeling to dreams, especially for women. Lavender (Lavandula spp.) -- Lavender aids in easing headaches when you are awake, and is useful in relaxing blends alone or in combination with roses and mugwort. Combined with jasmine and roses, lavender adds warmth and familiarity to romantic mixes. Leather -- While it seems an unlikely ingredient, leather is tanned with a product that comes from oak bark. The scent of fresh leather trimming adds excitement and energy to dream blends. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) -- In aromatherapy, lemon balm is used to relieve depression, anxiety, insomnia, and nervous tension. This herb combines well with roses, lavender, thyme, hops and mint. A mix of lemon balm and lavender, in equal parts, is useful in relieving headache and stress. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) -- A native herb of tropical regions, lemongrass adds a bit of color and a soothingly safe, mildly exotic feeling to blends. Lemon Verbena (Aloysia triphylla) -- Native to Chile and Argentina, this shrub produces delightfully aromatic leaves that can add a bit of lightness, even feelings of flying, to the dream blend when used in small amounts. Lilac (Syringa Chinensis) -- Use lilac for sweet, safe, and peaceful dream mixes, in small amounts. It's also good in mixes for the sickroom, and for travelers' blends. In larger amounts, lilac adds sensuality. Marjoram, Sweet (Origanum majorana) -- Sweet marjoram is often used in blends to ease nervousness and restlessness during sleep. I find that this herb adds a dimension of warmth, safety and comfort to dreams. Mimosa Flowers (Acacia dealbata) -- Somewhat like jasmine, only milder, mimosa can add an exotic, more complex feeling to dreams. Mimosa and lemon balm are a good combination for peaceful but slightly colourful dreams. Mint (Mentha spp). -- Just a small amount of mint works like a tuning knob on a television. It adds clarity, vividness, and colour to dreams. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) -- In folklore it is said that this herb causes the dreamer to remember his or her dreams. It does seem to increase clarity, while also encouraging relaxation. Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) -- Used as a mild sedative in herbal medicines, passionflower adds a quieting effect to the dream pillow. Flowers and leaves are both used, but flowers are preferred. Rose (Rosa spp) -- Rose petals create a feeling of loving thoughts and warmth. Used with more exotic herbs in romantic or adventurous mixes, roses keep the feeling of the dream grounded in safety and peacefulness. Rosemary (Rosmarinum officialis) -- In folklore, rosemary was used to ensure sleep and keep away bad dreams. Rosemary works well with a bit of lavender, roses, mugwort, and hops for a relaxing night's sleep without notable dreaming. Thyme (Thymus spp.) -- Herb lore of old claims that sleeping on a pillow of thyme allows the dreamer to see faeries. I generally combine thyme with roses, hops, lavender, and rosemary for a peaceful, quiet dream.

15/20 Soda Can appears before the Royal Magpie Society
The Grand Vizier leaned back on the Yakking Branch and nodded slowly to the circle of nearly-peers. Cut out of woodblock. Ink feathers, ink beaks. A stenographer with a felt cap and corncob pipe scribbled out the conversation onto a scroll so long that it dangled beneath the branch and snapped in the wind.
"How could you be so criminally negligent?"
Soda Can scrunched up her face and tried to force tears. She acted out a swoon. The member of the Society chosen to defend her did so with relish. "Criminally lonesome, maybe!"
The nearly-peers fluffed and squawked.
The Grand Vizier swelled. "You'll hold your tongue until it's your turn up here!" He turned towards the nearly-peers. "Or it will be held for you."
"Threats!"
"Yes!"
The nearly-peers erupted once more. Soda Can swooned once more.
And she would turn the page and the smell of old paper would hit her face. A coffee stain color was creeping through the margins. Her fingers would smell like the book the next day.
Round lines. The Yakking Branch started to wobble. From behind the vizier shuffled an old, fat magpie in a mildewy overcoat pinned with medals. The vizier spun around.
"Commodore! You know the rules!"
The Commodore took the pipe from his mouth and stabbed the end at the vizier and the rest of the Society Branch. "I told you, and you, and all of you." The medals were distracting most of the audience. "But no one ever listens."
"Great point, Commodore. Now return to-."
The Commodore got closer. He leaned around the vizier and shot one final lightning bolt of a stab towards Soda Can. "This- is what you get!"
"Commodore, please!"
The defending Society member leapt off of Soda Can's branch and landed on the Yakking Branch, outward of the Grand Vizier. "Nobody asked the Commodore to speak!"
"Nobody asked you to either!" The vizier was being smothered. The Yakking Branch was so overloaded that the Society could only follow the argument by nodding their heads.
She would recognize the familiar beats and slip into the person she was a month ago, two months ago, reading the same pages. She would twirl her hair and bite her nails. Time compacted. She was sitting beneath the window in the attic and underneath the yellow lampshade in the parlor all at the same time.
The Commodore had ejected the other two from the Yakking Branch with his bulk. Everyone, defendants included, leaned in as the crimes were described.
Jane was born in the fall and came down sick in the winter. The nearest hospital was a three-hour drive along country roads with ditches on either side that could swallow up the truck whole. If Bob didn't work the pedal like he did and he didn't keep the speed low, the bed would fishtail and she would go from jogging the bundle in her lap to pulling it in towards her throat until the truck was straight again. The vents above the dashboard struggled to keep the windshield clear and the headlights of air sucking, bovine tractor-trailers would blind them in the moment right before they passed each other, inches from the edge of the ditch. Jane screamed the whole time.
Bob dropped them off underneath the ER overhang. The sky was brightening, but the clouds trapped them in a cold, purple hole. The receptionist had a cigarette in two fingers. No insurance. Bob came in knocking the snow off of his boots and sat down next to her. The blanket was peeled back and they watched her swollen face for the better part of an hour. The receptionist called them over, and only Bob went. Yes, no insurance. Bob sat down next to her with the clipboard and tried to fill out as much as he could on his own.
Once they were called up, the doctor was in and out insultingly fast. The diagnosis was a run-of-the-mill fever that could be cured with a prescription formula, only the cost was a life or death situation in itself. A day of making bank calls and living out of gas station restrooms. When they drove back it was nearly as dark and cold as it had been on the way there.
The Society Branch went wild. Soda Can's defense was hopping with irritation. He made a move to occupy the Yakking Branch but the Commodore blocked him off.
She thought the book belonged to her father because nobody else had ever been a kid. There was an inscription just behind the cover in beautiful cursive. "For Teddy Jr" She worried most about passing things to her kids when she was a kid herself. There was this book and one about a spider attending a tea party, a rocking horse her father had made for her that was black and white and the mane was attached with steel tacks, a silver pocket watch.
She had heard the news and ran out into the woods in her only school uniform. Her father always reminded her how paying for it had shortened his life by at least three months. "It's so you won't have to do the same thing, can you appreciate that?" In the process of trying to get angry and upset enough to make time give him back up again, she tore her stockings, scored her shoes, left stains on the whitest parts of her uniform that were sure to never come out. She hid in a tree and dug her nails into her legs so hard that it looked like two dogs had bitten her.
"Why again? You had your chance." The Commodore snapped his beak. "And in what an unnatural way."
The formula was bought with money they borrowed so many times over that it wasn't clear who they owed what anymore. The swelling in Jane's eyes and nose went away and a healthy pink returned to her skin. She slept, but Bob couldn't. He would get up at four, shower and shave, drink a little coffee, drive two counties over to unload trucks at a supply yard for farmers. He would come home after lunch smelling like every kind of fertilizer; earthy cow, sharp chicken, a nostril-burning pure nitrogen. He would finally eat for the day, shower again, have another cup of coffee, then drive the opposite way to a seasonal job putting up telephone poles. He would get back after dark, shower again, eat again, and then try to sleep. But he would just roll around, and right after midnight, every night, he would leap out of bed and run to the bathroom and throw up. And he would be up by four.
Jane's fever returned a year later, and the year after that. It was never any better or any worse. They would just be breaking even again when she would come down with it and suddenly there was the medication to pay for, gas to drive into town every week, new alternators. Sleep that Bob was now just starting to get again would be gone for two and a half months.
Nobody came into the woods looking for her. She climbed down in the late evening, and there was a snake below her.
A stubby cabinet in the parlor corner had all the books in it that her father used to read. She would pull on the brass handle in the door would swing open longways like a stable gate. There was a musty smell trapped in it, and the books were piled in it with their bottoms facing out, all of them at an angle because nobody ever bothered to stack them properly. If she opened most of them their spines would still crack.
"That's enough, Commodore." The Grand Vizier landed behind him.
"You haven't let me get to the point yet."
The defense landed opposite, shouting "Off!" The branch was bouncing again.
"Off! Off!" The Society Branch cheered, raining feathers.
The Commodore sucked his head back and motioned to the Grand Vizier that he wished to get by. The Society twirled their necks and heckled him back down the branch until he rejoined them.
The defense tried to reach the Grand Vizier's height. "How about you let us have a say now?"
The vizier turned away from him and addressed the Society Branch, giving Soda Can a downwards, scornful look. "The distortion of natural laws. That's what it is. Not once, but twice."
"I say! Let us speak! "
"No doubt the Society has seen the evidence? We're not disagreeing about what was or wasn't done, are we?"
The Society's eyes popped when they yelled it. "No!"
"What are we disagreeing about then?"
The defense tried to face the vizier. "Your big mouth!"
"Guaranteed to haunt."
While the Society was busy cheering and crawling over one another, the Grand Vizier de-branched the defense, who fell some distance, before recovering and landing next to Soda Can.
The fever didn't return when Jane was four, or when she was five. When Jane was six, Bob started throwing up around the clock. Within a week his knees were unreliable and he had to lay down for most of the day. She had to see Jane off for school, work part time, come home and take care of Bob, then take care of Jane when school let out. They had no money, and the weather got worse.
"One-for-one."
The defense was horrified. A cool, predatory silence washed over the nearly-peers. They leaned forward, talons digging into the bark of the Society Branch. Soda Can could see herself reflected in their eyes.
"I propose to the Fine Society that we remove the defense from his branch. All in favor?"
"Here here!"
"Then removed he be."
And they launched themselves in squadrons of four until the entire branch was clear. Soda Can leapt back. The lead group hit the defense in the chest and tossed him off the branch, and he would've fallen, but they caught him by the shoulders and held him up for the others. They aimed for his face. Tearing fabric. Someone caught the end of a thread in their beak and yanked back on it, and his glass eyes fell out of his head and he unraveled in a cloud of sawdust.
The nearly-peers circled overhead. Only the Grand Vizier wasn't airborne. "And you." Soda Can felt the branch shake. "You have nothing to stand on anymore."
The branch and the tree moldered underneath her. Worms jumped out of the wood and submerged again. Moss appeared in the shadows. The tree collapsed and she fell with it.
The snake looked like yellow wax. It lay in the one spot in the path where the orange evening sun could still reach the ground. It wasn't coiled up or spread out but shaped like a sloppy question mark, watching her. On any other day she would have climbed back up the tree and yelled for help or even fought her way through the thorns on either side rather than get its attention. Now it was just all the torment of the day, continued, only in a solid form. She took a step forward and it recoiled along its length into a tighter S-shape. She continued to step forward. When it was in range, she brought her heel down on its neck.
