#JackedKirby - House Ads vs Finished Product 💥💥💥 I was doing some research on things to post and I came across this interesting house ad. Pic 1 is a House Ad that was placed in Sgt Fury and His Howling Commandos #Issue4 (published bi-monthly in November of 1963). It is promoting the appearance of golden age hero turned current hit villain Submariner in the next issue of the Avengers! Pic 2 is the opening splash page of the Avengers #Issue3 (published bi-monthly in January of 1964). 💥💥💥 At first glance the obvious thing they share in common is the central figure of Subby that was obviously used twice... once in the house ad and once in the actual issue. In the house ad we also see lots of signature “Kirby floating heads”... which we also see in the actual issue page. But there is a major difference between the heads in the Ad from 11/63 and the finished product from 1/64. 💥💥💥 Hulk’s head/hair has been redesigned, with Jack moving away from the flat top Frankenstein head to the messy mop top hair. Also Iron Man has gone from the golden “metal torpedo head” helmet to the more recognizable red/gold shell head helmet. Thor and Giant Man seem to be designed the same. Also we see the addition of Wasp to the group in the final page! 💥💥💥 Sgt Fury and Avengers were on the same publishing cycle every two months... with Fury getting a bit of a head start. So it would make sense to promote the upcoming Avengers issue in the Fury mag... but between the time of publishing numbers Fury Issue 4 and the actual publishing of Avengers 2 Iron Man’s armor was drastically changed. This actual happens because his armor is MELTED by a villain known as THE MELTER (lol) in Tales of Suspense #issue47 (also Nov of 1963). The new red/gold armor was designed by penciller Steve Ditko... which would then have to be continued from then on. But when Jack did the House Ad to appear in Fury this hasn’t happened yet... so we get old Gold Bucket Head in the Ad!!! Cool little publishing quirk... 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Avengers #NickFury #IronMan #Mark2Armor #Mark3Armor #SgtFury #SgtFuryAndHisHowlingCommandos #HouseAds #Submariner #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Z8xgahjrH/?igshid=ga60fehixcgz

#JackedKirby - The House Ad that Sold a Million Comics!!!! 💥💥💥 Here is a house ad that ran in #Issue1 of the Incredible Hulk (published in May of 1962). It is referencing Fantastic Four #Issue1 which had came out a few months earlier but was still being milked for al they could get out of it. 💥💥💥 The book was becoming a huge hit, and by #Issue3 of the FF it had been given the title “The Greatest Comic Book Magazine in the WORLD!” By Stan Lee. As they began to roll out new comics (like the solo Hulk book this ad was featured in!) they began cross promoting their big sellers to broaden their appeal. This helped establish the characters as living in a connected company structure... something Kirby & Lee has envisioned for the future of their creations. 💥💥💥 Notice the ad for Amazing Adult Fantasy, an anthology book at the time that was facing floundering sales and Lee hoped to invigorate with an association to the more popular FF and Hulk characters. The magazine would continue to founder, but it would eventually launch Spider-Man with #Issue15... another monumental moment in the Marvel Universe! 💥💥💥 I recently saw this ad in the @twomorrowspubs book Stuff Said and then also found it referenced by @rand.hoppe of the @kirbymuseum in an online article. It is supposedly some of the earliest known existing FF art still around.... 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #HouseAd #FantasticFour #FF #IncredibleHulk #AmazingFantasy #StanLee #LeeAndKirby #MarvelComics #Ads #ComicAds #Comic #Comics #ComicBooks #ComicBook #IGComics #IGcomicCommunity #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #TwoMorrows #StuffSaid https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs8ViQUh0c6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=iui2uda2koyh

#JackedKirby - Justice Inc (The Avenger) panel reused as a House ad! 💥💥💥 We are knee deep in our #jackedkirbybyrequest week and @paintmarvels (Whatup Adolfo!) asked us for some Justice Inc (aka The Avenger)... so here we go! 💥💥💥 The Avenger was a pulp novel and magazine character from the late 30s that DC decided to take a run at in the 70s. Issue 1 featured a story by the great Denny O’Neil, a cover by Joe Kubert and interiors by Al McWilliams... but by #Issue2 (published in Aug of 1975) Jack was brought in as a relief pitcher!!! 💥💥💥 This panel features an upper torso shot of the death white Avenger in all his Kirby glory... and was immediately turned into a house ad for the remainder of the series!!! (Pic 2). 💥💥💥 Kirby would pencil the remaining 3 issues, and do the covers for issues 2/3 as well... you know you are an amazing artist when you take over on a book and they immediately turn your pencils into the new house ad!!! 💥💥💥 This was one of Kirby’s last projects at DC before retiring to Marvel in 1975... a nice little goodbye with a golden age subject matter!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #JusticeInc #TheAvenger #DennyOneil #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #HouseAd #Ads #KirbyHouseAds #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #PulpComics #PulpNovels #30sPulp #comicsofig #instaart #comicsofinstagram #dccomics #igcomicfamily #igcomiccommunity #RequestFilled

Conan the Barbarian, Vol. 1 # 36 Pg, 17 & Savage Tales, Vol. 1 # 04 Pg. 66 by John Buscema, with Inks by Ernie Chua.
Collectors of Big John know that his best stuff was often drawn on the back of published pages. He was famous for his “warm up sketches” done on the reverse of published pages. This is a perfect example of why. The Conan page at the top had a sketch of a Barbarian on the reverse that was so good, Ernie inked it as well, AND Marvel used it for a HouseAd. Big John was awesome.

#JackedKirby - House Ad Crazy!!! Here are two 50’s era DC House Ads for Challengers of the Unknown, something that was a Kirby creation but a title he didn’t work on for too long before leaving DC. . The first ad was pulled from My Greatest Adventure #Issue30 which was published in April of 1959. It is an ad for Challengers if the Unknown #Issue7 which itself was published in May of 1959. . The second ad appeared in My Greatest Adventure #Issue33 which was published in July of 1959. The ad is for Challengers if the Unknown #Issue8 which itself was published in July of 1959! . It’s always nice to look at how they were marketing comic books to readers in different eras. Trying to get people to come read another title through the power of persuasive marketing... and showing off the upcoming cover art probably didn’t hurt either!!!! #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #HouseAds #MyGreatestAdventure #ChallengersOfTheUnknown #DCComics #50sComics #ComicsOfThe50s #Comic #ComicBook #Comics #ComicBooks #IGcomics #igcomiccommunity #comicbookads
