Mar 2023 Seitokai Bookclub | とつくにの少女
Hi friends! The Seitokai Bookclub is STILL ongoing--the only reason why you haven't seen a post about it lately is because we were still reading コンビニ人間. However, starting on Feb 26, we will be reading とつくにの少女 (Totsukuni no Shoujo), also known as The Girl from the Other Side. If you're interested in joining us or want more details on how our bookclub runs, come join us in the server or feel free to message me/drop an ask (or even @litheah and @tokidokitokyo).
What if I've never read a book in Japanese yet? I'm not confident in my skills. That's fine! Not only do we always have a group vocab sheet that we collectively add to (anonymously), but we have ongoing discussions about whatever book we're reading. That means you're free to ask questions, send screenshots, rant about a character or anything like that. You'll definitely find me asking about certain grammar points or if using a particular set of kanji for a word changes the nuance in a particular sentence.
What's the goal of your bookclub? Well, we're interested in fostering confidence in reading in your target language without feeling that you have no one to turn to. Our server has people of all levels of fluency, meaning that there's always someone who can answer your question. And if we can't, we have people we can reach out to ask. We won't leave you hanging!
You don't seem to choose books I'm interested in--how can I change that? Well, we take suggestions and vote as a bookclub for what we'll be reading next. If your book doesn't win the first time you submit it, try try again! とつくにの少女 was suggested and in voting 3-4 times before it finally won (same with a lot of our other books.) Don't be discouraged!
We hope to see you there! | Seitokai's Nihongo Discord Server

Japanese Book Clubs
I belong to a Discord server for those studying Japanese, called Seitokai. I have unofficially assumed the role of moderator for the two book clubs going there: one is a Japanese language book club and one is an English language book club but we usually read translations of Japanese books (although that's not a hard and fast rule).
Join us in the Seitokai Discord Server and grab the Japanese bookclub role to get started!
We are coming up towards the end of the month, and I wanted to put out an announcement so if you wanted to join for May you could.
青のフラッグ - April's Japanese book club book
Tumblr media
The book club accepts nominations for novels, light novels, and manga each month, and those who are planning to join vote on it. This month a manga won, but suggestions are still being accepted for May.
-
The Devil's Flute Murders - April's English book club book
Tumblr media
This month a murder mystery won, but there are usually a variety of books nominated. Suggestions for May are still being accepted!
So, if you'd like to join us, feel free! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Nov-Feb Bookclub: コンビニ人間 (Convenience Store Woman)
Hi friends! The Seitokai Bookclub has officially wrapped up reading Vol. 1 of おじさまと猫.
Starting from November 21, 2022 to (probably, possibly, who knows bc we might finish early) February 20, 2023 we will be reading コンビニ人間 (Convenience Store Woman) by Sayaka Murata. The book has already been translated into more than 30 languages! There are many theories (including that the main character might be autistic, might be asexual or aromantic--or all theories combined). Come read with us and let's discuss theories! I've read a small portion of the book in English and I also have theories :D. This is our bookclub's first time reading a book at this assumed difficulty level, but I'm looking forward to the challenge!
Come join us! You can see previous bookclub reads, access the group-made vocab lists, reopen the discussions, suggest and vote on new bookclub reads--anything you like! Even if you're not interested in reading, but you'd like study tips, study buddies, help with homework, study streams, chatting with other Japanese learners and people who have already lived in Japan, you should still come join us!

Beginner's Japanese Bookclub | Yotsuba&!
So, the Seitokai discord server hosts two (2) bookclubs now! One for intermediate and beyond, and one for beginners and those who would like to test the waters with reading native materials.
If you'd like to learn more about the beginners bookclub, click below.
Tumblr media
With that sentiment in mind, we have chosen the よつばと! (Yotsuba&!) series the beginner's bookclub. While we acknowledge that there may be some mild challenges while reading the book (such as colloquialisms, dialect, children's speech, etc), we have chosen this series because there are a plethora of resources dedicated to helping beginners learn through this series. Since the series follows a 5-year-old girl foreign girl who's been adopted by a Japanese father, the readers get to follow along as she's introduced to new words, concepts, and aspects of Japanese culture. Additionally, the series currently has 15 volumes and the author does include current events and pop culture pieces within the volumes (of course, based off of when those particular volumes were written).
The beginners' bookclub is loosely structured, where participants can choose their own dates for finishing chapters/sections of the books and are able to discuss it with anyone at any given point. This particular bookclub will be a revolving door: no set dates--just the freedom of reading and learning at your own pace.
Discussions are still available, as many of the advanced readers in the server have already read the series and would love to discuss it and answer any questions. In fact, our lovely @kallisto-no-planetarium
has already created and shared with us a powerpoint that gives a brief overview on the series and what to expect in terms of plot, grammar, colloquialisms, vocab, and characters.
There is a channel specifically dedicated to the series so that it won't get bogged down with messages from the other bookclub channel. Come and go as you please, ask questions about grammar, vocab, or anything that confuses you. The vocab lists for the first 2 volumes Yotsuba are already posted and pinned in the designated channel within the server (yes, this means that you don't have to worry about struggling through the first 2 volumes on your own). Starting from volume 3, we hope that members of that bookclub will be able to contribute to a server-created, series-specific vocabulary list.
Our lovely @litheah, @kallisto-no-planetarium, @tokidokitokyo
,and myself will all be in the server, too. We hope to see you there!

Japanese Bookclub: March Edition.
Hi, friends!
As previously mentioned, the Seitokai discord server hosts a Japanese bookclub to help encourage learners to overcome their fear of native materials by tackling it head on! @litheah, one of our admin, is the head of the bookclub and has already listed various locations and resources to obtain the book in physical and digital copies. As usual, a vocabulary list has been created and will be updated as we read along with the book. Come check out the server to get more information regarding this month's book and to find some other Japanese learners to hang out with.
This month's book is ヲタクに恋は難しい (Wotakoi) <1>.
Tumblr media
And, of course, I'll be back at the end of the month with another masterpost with the link for the vocab list, plot summary, and everything else just like i did for last month's book.

Among Us | Japanese Game Night
Hi, friends! Our lovely friends @nihongo-zoe and @saltail will be hosting a Japanese Game Night on Sunday, March 20, 2022 AT 7PM CST. If you're interested, come on over to the Seitokai server to chat with them and anyone else that's interested in playing the game.
Why are we hosting Japanese game nights? We believe that any opportunity to use the language is a learning opportunity. You can mix the things that you enjoy with the language that you're learning! There are no wrong answers, so don't be worried that you won't be able to understand what's going on. No one is only going to chat in Japanese and ignore you if you're struggling.
If you're thinking: how am I going to know what words to use, have no fear! @saltail was lovely enough to create a powerpoint of Among Us terms in Japanese. Click the "keep reading" to see the rest of the slides.

Japanese Book Club
Hi friends!
Over at my discord server, we believe that consuming media and reading books in your target language is a great way to begin to become more comfortable in the language and to actually think in the language. Not only is this building your reading comprehension skills and vocabulary repertoire, it's also helping you push past the hurdle of fear involving native materials. Oftentimes, we have a fear of reading certain materials because we think that it may be too difficult or "above our level." But there's no need to fear with this bookclub--we made a vocabulary list of everything from every chapter so that anybody can read the book comfortably. Weekly discussions/threads are opened up for us to come chat with each other about the plot, ask questions about grammar, and to see if we all understood something the same way.
We're inviting YOU to come participate with us! Come suggest a book; come vote for a book. If there is enough interest, we will have two (2) bookclubs: one for upper-beginner to lower-intermediate and one for upper-intermediate to advanced.
Come join us: https://discord.gg/vpuf7XHmyj
Click below to learn more about February's book and to see the vocab list for it.
From February 4, 2022 to February 28, 2022, the Seitokai's Nihongo discord server read volume 1 of それでも歩は寄せてくる (Sore de mo Ayumu wa Yosete Kuru), also known by the English title When Will Ayumu Make His Move? The vocab list is hyperlinked if you're interested. (Each page, kanji, kana, and definition for words added are listed on here).
Tumblr media
Plot: Ayumu Tanaka, a first-year high school student, and Urushi Yaotome, a second-year high school student, are the only two members of the Shogi club. Though he's in love with his senpai, he refuses to confess his feelings until he beats her at at least one game of shogi. The issue is that Urushi-senpai is an absolute beast at shogi. To make it more interesting, she's aware that he likes her and she tries her best to get him to confess. Much to her chagrin, he refuses to drop that poker face of his and confess yet. The story is fast-paced and follows along their antics of each other being on the offense and defense of both love and shogi.
If you're interested in helping pick or suggest the book for March or even just interested in participating, come join us at https://discord.gg/vpuf7XHmyj
Some of the people that you'll see participating in the discussion and bookclub are @tokidokitokyo, @sienne-k, and @litheah
