Outsmarted Again

Postcards from Snagglepuss

So what exactly could compare?

SOMEWHERE IN THE COLORADO ROCKIES: The scene ... early morning, utterly around sunrise. Beside a mountain lake affording something of a view towards the Rocky Mountains in the distance. The weather a tad on the chilly side; hence, some hot coffee beforehand for warmth.

Yours truly, as much as Huckleberry Hound, find themselves donning swim fins and wetsuits as well heading into said lake ... not for diving in this time, but just to drink in the view of the Rockies to be perceived in the shallows of same. A little mist and fog bound to give way quickly to bright, early morning sunshine as we make our way into the lake.

Once in its waters, slightly frigid-feeling (though not to the point of icy) ... the sun obviously having revealed itself, and the mountains themselves coming into view. What awe and inspiration was to be had sensing the view unfolding, though some 20 miles distant and the air rather clear besides?

"You have to wonder yourself, Snag," Huckleberry Hound remarked to me, "just how small we are in contrast to such majesty in the distance."

Ohhhh ... so fascinating a view there! was all I could be thinking, as if in a Zen-like state of meditative trance. Perhaps it was the rarified mountain air that explained such circumstances on this pussycat's end.

Which, back on shore, had Hokey Wolf and Ding-a-Ling somehow awe-struck as well as much over us and the view. "Ding, my boy," as Hokey remarked in his somewhat stentorian manner, "breathes there as interesting an experience as we've had, just sensing the wonder of the mountain panorama off yonder as we go on our merry sort of road trip ways?"

Which saw Ding-a-Ling, over coffee, remark, "I have to say, Hokey, that you couldn't have put things rather well like you did." Humble remarks, yes, but for such a lovable fan of Hokey as Ding, well put.

Which, at any rate, could be considered the highwater of our hammock-camping experience before moving onward, knowing where the Braham Pie Day and a certain date with Peter Potamus lay ahead on the road. And let's just hope our mobile bivouac has four-wheel drive, and I MEAN four-wheel drive!
